Have to say thanks. Most troubleshooting said the dash indicator would be blank. You said "or a dash." That's what I had. Just installed the new switch and my 01 S60 is running as well as she can. Quarter of a million miles and going strong. Thanks for the info!
Very informative video. Just a special note: before undoing a bunch of things inspect your cable harness for connectors not completely seated. This causes various codes depending on which sensors are affected.
A couple of tips. Remove the MAF. Use a hair dryer or heat gun to slightly soften the plastic tight fitting hose. Then remove the air box top with the Maf still attached to it. Route the new cable before putting the sensor back on. Take notice that the new sensor bolt holes are not round. They are elongated bolt holes that will allow adjustment of the sensor if the car won't start and or the indicator lights don't come on.Make sure to disconnect the battery.
Did your transmission act up a little bit like it didn't want to pull cuz mine's doing the same thing in the video but it acts like it don't want to pull

good video the 4 - 5 comments under top selection says it all .. plus 1. Clean underneath the sensor, careful around the shaft of the selector axle before mounting the new. 2. Get some silicone grease for the rubber seal in the el. connector, best is food grade silicone grease as it is acid free (Bardahl makes some god stuff, also anti-seize grease) 3. Loosen all other things first before removing the bolts holding the sensor .. check those two bolts first of all, if you can't loosen them, no need to go on before they are loose This goes 'specially for filler plugs too in all them "oil containing reservoirs" like gearbox, bevel gear, Haldex, Differentials, etc. And don't yank that gear stick like a "nun holding a d**ck" .. nice and easy, calm and smooth. A good, practical no nonsense video, Adam. Thanks. I did this job on my old 850 and found that the positioning of the switch was critical to within a couple of millimetres, otherwise it wouldn't work. I made an alignment tool to get it just right. You seem to fit the switch without any adjustment, and it worked. Presumably things have moved on since 1994! I have just acquired a 2004 V70 so would be interested in your thoughts on this issue. Best wishes from the UK.
The switch definitely does look to have adjustability built in, when originally filming the video there was an extra step to not tighten the bolts until calibrated but in this case it just worked. Luck? Hard to say. Anything with ovoid mounting points should always be assumed to allow adjustability and calibration.
Thanks for the reply. I wish I had your luck!! I found this to be a pig of a job to get the positioning just right. I made an alignment tool from a pair of tweezers and a bit of wire. The tweezers were fitted over the central spigot secured by the wire wrapped around the prongs of the tweezers. The top of the tweezers can then be aligned with a mark on the switch like the hand of a clock. It worked well. The other way is to put the shift in reverse and move the switch until the reversing light comes on. Keep moving it until the light goes off. Half way between the two points should be the correct alignment. I hope this is of use to someone.
Any info on why one would drive for like 20 minutes and then just stops shifting and moving all of the sudden . Let it sit for few drive again and then another 14 minutes or so it won't pull again

I have a 2003 Volvo xc90. Drove to store came out and the car would no longer move in Drive. I can slam it down into manual and shift to 3rd gear and it drives. But I have to slam it back into manual for it to go into manual. If I just move it back and over to the manual position it stays in Drive. But when I slam it back it goes into manual but only will move in 3rd gear. Never had a problem before. Never slipped or shifted hard. Sometimes when I put it in drive I would have to wiggle the gear shifter around to get drive to engage. Since it never had any issues before as far as slipping or shifting hard, I am lost. No, the transmission will not know what gear it's in and will most likely go into limp mode. In some cases the engine may not start if it can't tell if it's in gear or not.

Hey thanks for the video. I know it's 6 years after the fact I've got a Volvo V70 2004 that is doing the exact same thing. But I'm getting a trouble code that says my shift solenoid S1 signal is missing. Could just be caused by the pnp?

Hello dear sir, I have problem with reverse in volvo s 80 so the gear is working propebly in D position but when i but in reverse the car cant go back. So please feed me back with the solution , my secerly,,,
I have a starting problem with my 2003 Volvo S60 every once in a while. I suspect(ed) the PNP switch, but you say then the display would not show in what position the gear selector is, but that works fine on my Volvo. I suspect it because when I have that problem and move the gear selector all the way (with serious speed) up and down it will crank eventueally. But now I start wondering if it will be the PNP switch. I do not have any transmission fault codes. Not on the info display and not on the OBD scanner.

Good Morning, I know own my sisters 2002 S60 and when i drive it does slip when I step on the gas hard. or make a left it slips. So I am now researching what the issue is. I till make a note of this also I do have a card reader, so I will do this today sometime. Thanks for the videos. I hope this is the issue. I don't want to worry it might be something bigger in the transmission. Well that is what we do. Trial and error. Hope this is the fix. but I have much to check before saying this might be it. Once again thanks for the videos.
Hey David did you find the solution?? My 2001 S80 T6 does the same thing, slipping if I accelerate hard or instantly slips if turn left, turning right does hold quite more "abuse" on the gas until it finally slips.
hello adam, this pnp sensor that serves, you did not in the end tighten the two screws of the sensor, I would like to know if they should still be with a slight tightening, thanks for your video.
I put my car in drive, release brake to mive car ahead and in seconds the transmission goes from. normal to glitch mode with little forward traction and when it does that it either disengages the RPM gauge and the gear Shift indicator, you dont know what gear you're in. Also, the D or R light n the gear shift panel can get stuck in D even if you move the shifter to another position. Transmission Requires appears, some times the engine service appear and the battery disconnected seems to be the only way to get rid of the service notifications. In Glitch mode I get cluncking. In Manual Mode with lever pulled all the way back. the whizzing sound heard in D and Reverse disappears - also heate in manual mode when lever is not pulled back and yes, slipping there. When engaging in the manual mode lever pulled all the way back there is a big clunk The transmission shop pinter to fommunication problems as well as a Higher Than Permitted 'something' in the ABS system, he didnt know how to explain the high reading and said it could be too high a voltage with a cause, could be open circuit. The car drove well when I bought it 3 weeks ago for two days and thw it started to slip. I started shutting itniff in Drive mode making it possible to maintain normal transmission pull IF it had been workng Normal on the trip but at one point that didnt work anymore. Previously I had to wait for the engine, transmission temperature to go down big time. Yransmission shop said the gears dont slip and the thing must be entering Limp mode. SOS, is it the PNP Switch?

Victor Titus you may want to take a look at the cem, mine was overheating causing it to die randomly and refused to restart. Open the cem up, and there will be a metal plate/ shield, remove it and place a small heat sink on the chip. (25mm X 25mm is the right size I think)

My transmission will not shift (ie) Tip-tonic gear selections -MAN+ is this sensor the culprit ? (By replacing this sensor my transmission -MAN+ may work ? Thanks
When the dash shows 'R', is it actually in reverse or is it in Neutral? If you are getting inconsistent sensor readings, check to see if you can loosen the nuts and move the switch over slightly. If you are still getting the issue, changing the sensor may be a good next option.

There are a number of solenoids and valves internally that often get gummed up with lack of oil changes. If one become sticky they have to be cleaned taken apart and inspected. If not ok , replaced.! There’s plenty of video blog on these transmissions, with luck in English or Eastern European Language. Just tap the gearbox model number in (usually a plate in on top or around the transmission) Utube it. Best way to get a decent glimpse of the Model , take a photo by phone. Zoom in and read the Model number of the gearbox. One number this way or that shouldn’t be a great difference. These solenoids sit on the VaLve body, that can be strip clean out off the gearbox…usually.
Could this also cause issues with the geartronic not wanting to function. Shifts in auto normal but wont go in manual mode. Also the selector lights are dead
I think I am having the same transmission problems you have. Were you able to find the problem? I have a P0740 code. I replaced the PNP sensor and it worked fine for a few minutes. Now it won't shift.
I noticed that you didn't reload the transmission programme. The Volvo dealership stated that you can install the module but, needs to be reprogrammed and car driven to relearn the new module shift sequence...or is this a repair ploy to charge $300 for nstallation and $80 dollars to say that is what it needs?????
Volvo likes to reprogram the transmission after any kind of service to allow it to calibrate perfectly. However, Adam did not reprogram this and the car drove fine without fault.
Iseekoutthetruth. Free to work on but you'll need your tools lol. Parts are a bit more expensive than average especially sensors. Qualified competent labor is somewhat expensive.

my engine light is reading replace speed sensor but my car is also , is not telling me what gear I'm in so do I need to replace both speed sensor in position sensor 2002volvo s60
Filter is clogged.
I know I’m super late but mine recently has been acting up and I’m replacing it, will it cause your car to shift rough? Mine has been lately but I’m not sure if I should just change my transmission fluid
Did u figure out what was wrong with it ?and did u fix it?
Hey thanks for the video. I know it's 6 years after the fact I've got a Volvo V70 2004 that is doing the exact same thing. But I'm getting a trouble code that says my shift solenoid S1 signal is missing. Could just be caused by the pnp?
Hello, the arrow sign is on and it only goes in 1st gear, it does not shift to 2nd gear. Was this your problem? I would be happy if you let me know how it was solved.
My car Volvo 850 1997
Hello dear sir,
I have problem with reverse in volvo s 80 so the gear is working propebly in D position but when i but in reverse the car cant go back.
And VIDA or D5T5 is saying?
I'm glad you know what to do!
I wish he show the icon that displayed
" - " I have been searching for a while and looking at xc V70 for years know and have never seen the information I also maybe you know I have a solenoid fault
"E" but electrical p0773
Good Morning, I know own my sisters 2002 S60 and when i drive it does slip when I step on the gas hard. or make a left it slips. So I am now researching what the issue is. I till make a note of this also I do have a card reader, so I will do this today sometime. Thanks for the videos. I hope this is the issue. I don't want to worry it might be something bigger in the transmission. Well that is what we do. Trial and error. Hope this is the fix. but I have much to check before saying this might be it. Once again thanks for the videos.
Was the position sensor the problem. I have the same problem on my volvo c70
Hey David did you find the solution?? My 2001 S80 T6 does the same thing, slipping if I accelerate hard or instantly slips if turn left, turning right does hold quite more "abuse" on the gas until it finally slips.
Clogged filter.
hello adam, this pnp sensor that serves, you did not in the end tighten the two screws of the sensor, I would like to know if they should still be with a slight tightening, thanks for your video.
Yes, everything should be tightened snug, not too tight because the aluminum is soft.
Did the transmission act up like it didn't know what gear it was in
How do you replace Output speed sensor kn 1999 volvo s70?
Please I have Volvo S80 D2 automatic gearbox the gear shifts but car doesn't move or drive
what did you do to fix it because I have the same problem
I'm having the same problem with my 2006 Volvo XC90, would the process be the same? Help please
are there any videos or any info on replacing rpm sensor on a 2001 Volvo s60 with 2.4 t engine
The operation should be similar
I LOVE YOU MAN!!!

Yo tengo un volvo automatico la unica marcha que tiene poca fuersa es la reversa,, ojala me pudieras dar algun consejo atentamente Carlos.
What is the original number for this part?
I have tcm 002f and in place in screen in place of D R N i have this - ? Can it be from the sensor or change or transmission ? I have xc70 2,5 t 2006
Lock-up solenoid does not work.
Poor quality transmission fluid.
Mechanical fault in the transmission
Also the filter is clogged. Need to drill the case and poke the filter. Tap and insert bolt.
The best video thanks for uploading💞
Is the harness necessary to replace?
When engaging in the manual mode lever pulled all the way back there is a big clunk
The transmission shop pinter to fommunication problems as well as a Higher Than Permitted 'something' in the ABS system, he didnt know how to explain the high reading and said it could be too high a voltage with a cause, could be open circuit.
Hello, i have a same problem with “transmission service requried, in xc90, some times when i driving with 60 miles per hour, this message lighting on. After 60 miles the computer finding the some thing wrong with automatic, please can you tell me, what s wrong with my car?
It's impossible to say what's wrong with your car with this information. The first course of action would be to have the car scanned for fault codes. If there are codes, you can go from there.
thank you for the video, its great! my volvo 2000 V70 does not go into either of the gears, could it be the same issue please?
Got 2005 xc90 Will It work if i get It from a volvo car .
my volvo xc 90 2.4l diesel 2003 has a problem of auto box. In fact when you start, it moves forward or backward,
then after 2 minutes more nothing, normal as nothing
you can imagine in city area parking place are to congested...
now what could be possible???
Filter is clogged.
Great video!Do you need to disconnect the battery for this job?? Thanks!
Did your transmission act up a little bit like I didn't want to pull when that sensor went out
Would it fix p0810 error?
In order to reinstall the cable to the PNP switch, I had to place the shifter in drive 3. It would not line up in P.
Thanks for the input.
Hello everyone I have an volvo s80 2005 and the transmition doesnt work the engine start properly but when I put D the car doesnt move. Can anybody help me please?
what did you do to fix it? I have the same problem.
my volvo xc70 2004 automatic is taking a few strides/leaps when changing gears. Can this sensor in the video be the cause of the problem?

hi im euwing i have a volvo s80 t6 2002.Every time i drive i loose power .can someone help please
Can it be the gearbox or sensor
lalla mariscka take your car to an authorized mechanic immediately for diagnosis, this is a dangerous situation. We can't make guesses over the internet.
my car is not functioning very well, it keep on showing me transmission services required and most time it will stop on the road until it get cool before it will move again, what can be the problem please ?
Victor Titus you may want to take a look at the cem, mine was overheating causing it to die randomly and refused to restart. Open the cem up, and there will be a metal plate/ shield, remove it and place a small heat sink on the chip. (25mm X 25mm is the right size I think)
mike judge what is "cem"? i have the same problem tha was comented.
@@tiagobosze9604 central electronic module. It is near the brake pedal under a plastic panel. Kinda a pain to get out. There are a few videos on youtube on where it is and how to remove it
mike judge Ok, thank you so much. This heat sink is easy to put?
@@tiagobosze9604 its easy to put the heat sink in, just a pain getting the cem in and out
Can't find why changing my Volvo's transmission with a PNP Switch wouldn't help me here? It may be as simple as changing this PNP sensor cable. My transmission will not shift (ie) Tip-tonic gear selections -MAN+ is this sensor the culprit ? (By replacing this sensor my transmission -MAN+ may work ? Thanks
You should have a VIDA enabled diagnostic system plugged into your Volvo to diagnose this.
my problem is when switching from D to N, then the dash shows R. If i want to really switch to N, then i have to move to R and then backwards to N.
When the dash shows 'R', is it actually in reverse or is it in Neutral? If you are getting inconsistent sensor readings, check to see if you can loosen the nuts and move the switch over slightly. If you are still getting the issue, changing the sensor may be a good next option.
eEuroparts.com in Neutral. Thanks for the suggestion
Mr How are l’m from libya my name is Gamal I want this parts for my car Volvo model 99 S80 how to get it and Iwant ask about it’s price if you able to help l will be pleaser to you
Volvo s80 2001 6 plugs non tubor. Fault code: TCM 000B (Shift selonoid valve S1). Please help.
Does it need to be align? Or adjusted? Or it's kinda like plug and play?
no start on 06 xc90
It can be finely adjusted, but we found it to be plug and play.
I switched mine out but now it won't shift, do you have any suggestions? Please help.
Could this also cause issues with the geartronic not wanting to function. Shifts in auto normal but wont go in manual mode. Also the selector lights are dead
@Gayle Davis my issue ended up being corrosion on the tcm pins, cleaned them up and used contact enhancer and presto, shifter works flawless
Mine got the same problem to got transition service required
My car is having these symptoms but doesn't have the error message. It's goes limp after trying to find the proper gear
Clogged filter, poor fluid.
Would you happen to know if this switch is in roughly the same area for an S40 2005?
Yes, they have the same transmission, but ancillaries may be different
bad PNP sensor causes TCM comunmication error ??
I think I am having the same transmission problems you have. Were you able to find the problem?
I have a P0740 code. I replaced the PNP sensor and it worked fine for a few minutes. Now it won't shift.
@@chcros i had a bad relay in cem
@@chcros i had bad relay in cem .
Volvo dealers always claim that parts need to be reprogrammed.
I switched out mine but now the car won't shift out of park. Please help.
Did you buy the correct part number for your car? Is the linkage correctly engaged?
What to do with tcm 0100?
Is there a separate reverse switch on this gearbox?
Only for the reverse lights.
Is it the same steps for a xc90 t6 with a 4t65e?
It seems pretty similar if not the same.
are these cars a good car to buy? are they expensive to work on?
Iseekoutthetruth. Free to work on but you'll need your tools lol. Parts are a bit more expensive than average especially sensors. Qualified competent labor is somewhat expensive.
Hell NO!!!!!!!..... Everything is falling apart..... Chinese junk.... badly deigned badly engineered. Good luck to replace PCV valve as an example.... and if you don't.... kiss your engine goodbye.... one word JUNK.... good looking though..... get something reliable....

Is this a 2004 S60?

This is a 2002
Thx!
good tip ok guy thanks
Great vid. Thx!
Bro if you put the vehicle shifter into a low gear you would have had an easier time with the 17 mm bolt (Under the shifter lever)
Just remove the central selector nut first, 13mm, and then the 17mm is out in the open.
wow, a 10-minute job. they want to charge me $1500 for this
You pay for the time it took to build the skills, not the time it takes to do the job.
Thanks for the video can just clean it without taking out or replacing
We have heard of people cleaning the contacts, but the switch is held together with rivets rather than screws that must be drilled out in order to open. Most would opt to just replace the switch.
