Robert, for real for the last year now (since I got the 97 850 T-5) you have been an indispensable source of knowledge, this video helped me fully service my PNP switch and my car is starting and shifting like a champ, thanks you!
Robert your videos are my go to. We have been repairing our 96 Volvo for a few years watching your clear videos. 250000.and still running .We have a place called Harbor freight that we can purchase tools real cheap. They are not necessarily for the professional but for the shade tree mechanic they work quite well
My reverse lights had stopped working and bulbs were OK so next stop was here at the PNP switch. I was able to service the PNP whilst it was still connected... i.e. I didn't take the gearbox socket apart ( I tried and failed!) I had already obtained 3 C shaped pieces of copper as a kit (from ebay) which slide around to make contact at various positions. It was just a matter of taking the screws out, and pulling the switch apart and carefully replacing the copper parts. Clean and grease and reassemble. Lights now working woohoo! Thanks again Robert for a really useful video!
I live in Thailand . Today I'm complete replace PNP switch on Volvo 850 T5R. With guide line form your video. Thank you very much Robert. My next job is replace PCV. I'm learning from your video too. I think next week, I do it.
Did this today mine was riveted so I ground off the rivets knocked them out cleaned all contacts and replaced Di-electric grease replaced rivets with bolts and so far so good! Your videos have helped me immensely over the years!
Hi Robert, This is the best video about changing and repairing the PNP switch on a V850 automatic I've seen to date. Regards from two Danish electronic engineers (me and my wife) with at couple of old Volvo's in the driveway. oakey
Thanks for making this video, when I first watched it I was a little lost, but when I received my new switch and actually started working on it it was a piece of cake. It look me right around 60 minutes to complete, with very little trouble.
Thanks for this video Robert!! I have used a ton of your videos! Just a quick side note: for pulling out the wiring harness you don’t actually have to pull on the pin, you can pull on the tab on the pnp switch while prying the blue tab. This keeps the pins pretty clean.
Boom Fixed! Pulled the PNP out, cleaned i and now no more arrow. Thanks for the video man. Knocking out all the issues with my free C70 with 222k miles thanks to you. Still a few things left.
you just save me $500 just by making this video..... On 1999 Volvo S70 GLT Engine and arrow light was on After i scanned it,,,,,,the code was for PNP switch i watched this video it a couple of times in full before i try changing my PNP switch And low and behold i did it today......after i change it my engine and arrow light was still on So i hooked up my scanner and clear code and life is beautiful again and lets hope that it...happy new year cheers:=))))))
After watching your new video on the silver bullet today I had to find out what the hell is a pnp switch is. What a great tutorial video on what it is and how to replace it. Thanks for making me smarter.
Sebastian Schwarz Man, there are 100 things that can be wrong with these cars. That is why people ask me to keep the overviews coming. I meant to link the other videos in the comments. So, I'll do that now.
Hi Robert. I'm from the UK and have been researching a no crank no start issue on my 1995 850 GLE T-5 Estate (or station wagon, if you prefer), the Volvo designation being 855 Turbo. Battery is good, fuel pump is good, fuel in the tank, but no crank. I suffered the flashing gearbox/transmission warning light a couple of days ago, and did a little research and did the quick fix of running the gear selector through all positions several times, and this cured the problem, only no I have a no crank no start issue, and no click from the starter solenoid, making me think there's a problem with the gearbox, which is what led me to you and your videos. I haven't tried tapping the starter solenoid to see if it simply that which has jammed, but that will be my first port of call. My partner tried to start the car with the auto 'box in D a couple of days ago, and the symptoms were similar, but she changed to P and it fired right up with no apparent issues. While I have been researching this problem, I have seen on a couple of forums that it could also be the ignition switch, which I really don't want to tackle, I'm more mechanical than electrical. I can say though that I will be trying to either replace or refurbish my PNP switch having just watched this video, I've watched a couple and they're really informative! If you have any further advice, please reply to this, I'd be grateful to hear it. Thanks! Chris
my 1999 volvo s70 when put in reverse will do nothing but the reverslights will be on and when you press the gas it just revs the engine it is showing the arrow and will sometimes down shift to a low gear could this be the PNP switch
Hello Robert, thanks a lot for this movie. It really helped us fixing the car.. we never would have found out how to open the connector without your help!! Best regards from Germany!!
Robert DIY Well, more or less, the Volvo goes maximum 200 km/h ;-) We have one more question: it seems, that the Volvo did not notice completely, that he got the new switch. We have reversing light, the arrow is off, but sometimes it feels, as if he is not in a gear at all. Do you know, if we should do a reset of the TCM? We were thinking about disconnecting the battery overnight? Best regards, Sabine and Daniel
Robert DIY Yes, this was the first thing we did. We changed the fluid twice. Then we changed the pnp switch. Then it was better, but not really good (as described above). Now we had the battery disconnected overnight. And now we will make a longer test drive. See you later.
Thanks for your articulate explanation and step by step process. I hope my 96 Volvo 850 will get fixed am sick and tired of having the light pop up yet mechanic seems not to get a solution over that arrow. God bless you
Robert on Feb 23 (yr)? you commented about radiator fluid leaking into transmission. 98 v70 152k mi. had my radiator replaced. 1,000 k mi later my engine light and arrow lit up. after start in reverse. mechanic replaced gear switch. picked car up yesterday. arrow & engine light on? arrow is off now but engine light on. mechanic said need's a neutral safety switch. the car drives great. no issues. I don't know code. I need to pass emissions for tags. engine light is auto fail. driving on day permits.
Robert, you are awesome! Very kind of you to post this kind of information. By the way, for the first time, my 1992 Volvo 960 is starting to flash the orange up arrow on my instrument cluster. Any idea where the PNP switch is located on the 1992 volvo 960? I'm guessing somewhere on the transmission. On this car things are arranged differently than front wheel drive volvos being a rear-wheel drive car. I did try turning the key to position 2 and moved the shifter from park all the way to low for 20 times. That worked for about a day but now problem came back. Also, the reverse lights do come on when the shifter goes to the reverse position.
Robert, video instructions for pep removal spot on. I am having trouble removing switch after removing bolts. The switch moves freely around the stud that remains with transmission. I just can't remove it. Additionally, I tried the tweezers, but not having any luck disassembling plug assembling. Do you have any other tips?
Bob Kunz The best way to get the plug loose is with a pin knife. They are very stiff. Worse part about the entire job. Not sure what other issue you are having the the assembly???
Robert DIY Got with the pen knife. Robert the post protruding from transmission moved during switch. I marked the nuts retaining the gear shift cable like you suggested. can i move the post so that it aligns with gear cable | pnp switch connecting plate?
Robert,1999 S70 GLT I got an 530D code (vehicle speed sensor). I did replace the one in the rear part of the transmission with 2 different ones and no change to the flashing arrow in the dash and car starting in 3rd gear. I am wondering if the PNP switch is the culprit of the VSS that is connected to that big connector........
Hey Robert thanx for videos they are very useful for keeping my 96 850 glt automatic runing. reverse light not workinhg always when I put it in reverse. When it does not work I just put some preasure on stick and light goes on. No other problems than that it start in parking or neutral no hard shift or yelow arow on dashboard blinking. Is there anything else to consider before I go in and change pnp swich?
Did try it today now I got my reverse light working but car starts only in parking position and nothing when in neutral. I make couple rounds around city everything sems to work properly only dont start when in neutral. All i did was lose those two bolts on pnp swich and move it a bit until I got reverse light working. What could be problem with no starting in neutral now bad aligment or is it swich?
Hi Robert I appreciate all your post here. I have a 97 850R and it has a problem I can’t figure out the cause. I hope maybe you might have some idea how to fix it. When I put it in reverse it just barely moves. I checked the fluid and it was fine level. There are no codes for the transmission. It drives fine and all forward gears. I’m wondering if it could be a solenoid? I’ve also had the same issue on my 89, 740 turbo. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you.
I am sorry I don’t understand. Can you explain? The parking brake is completely disengaged. The car rolls freely forward and backwards. The issue is when put in reverse. It doesn’t engage solid. It’s like it’s slightly connected and on completely level ground. It will move a little bit. I was hoping that this might be a solenoid or something simple I can replace, someone told me that when reverse goes out, it means your pump in the transmission is beginning to fail. What I don’t understand is the car drives perfect and I’ll forward gears. Have you ever encountered this issue with the 850 Volvo before on the transmission?
Hi Robert-have you ever overhauled a PNP switch with 3 new copper contacts (you call them "pins" in your video)? Theres a kit available for like $20. The advantage I can see is that it can be done while still in the car - so no need to take apart and put together the electrical switchblock. the disadvantage is that you are working on the little pieces inside your engine. What do you think of this way? Also, a lot of the write-ups on how to do this talk about an alignment tool and how aligning it properly is critical. DId I miss that step in the video or did you just eyeball it? Thanks!
+Robert DIY - Yeah, and my back doesn't like leaning in like that for long...but I think I'm going to give the kit a try. That way I get the "worn" part replaced but I still have the genuine VOLVO PNP without paying $189. I'll let you know. Part is from SwedishCarParts dot com
Hi Robert I have followed this video, but I have hit a problem with removing the 3-part electrical connection. I have tried various thin blades to depress the clip at the en, but the connections wont shift. I think I have damaged the clip. Is it possible to disconnect the other sets of wires from the top of the gbax & remove the whole lot? Great videos by the way.
Hey Robert, how goes it? I was having a no start no crank condition. New battery and new starter. Had no flashing arrow and no check engine light. Replaced the the pnp switch and car won’t go passed 3rd gear and now I have flashing arrow and check engine light. Please shed some light. Thanks P.s. I completely forgot to put parking brakes and when taking old pnp switch out car rolled a little bit.
Robert DIY got it from Amazon. I ordered another one, brand is URO. As soon as the rain stops I’ll change it out. By the car rolling will it cause problems? Hopefully when I change it again it will work. If not I’m screwed.
Hey Robert, big fan of your channel. I've heard that a bad solenoid can cause the arrow light to flash as well. Sporadically my '99 v70 will fall into limp home mode. Other times the transmission shifts fine. Do you think it could be the solenoid?
I'm having Winter Mode indication on the dashboard when I start to drive in D. The car remains in Winter Mode throughout my drive all day. I have 1997 Volvo 850, 2.4. sedan, non-turbo. Robert --do you think I need to replace the PNP switch to fix my problem? I bought the car off the showroom 23 years ago in 1996 with 8 miles on it. Thanks in advance. Your videos are awesome.
I just (about) have my t5 back together after doing this, but when I go to put it in neutral, the gear shift won't move, even when I push the little release to the right of the gear selector. I'm at a loss
this video is great, I have a 96 960 wagon. The "W"winter drive and E switch on the gears, along with the arrow light on the dashboard began flashing today when i started it up, then the check engine light came on while driving. Later on in the day the flashing lights stopped but check engine light remained. Had it read, was told I needed pnp safety switch replaced. Part is $270.00 and it takes about 1/2 hour to do. Is that really that expensive? How long should it take? Oh last year the car would not start and a friend told me to put it in neutral first, it started fine and after a while it would start in park again. I guess it may be time to have it replaced.
Honymolasiz Sounds like you have your issue narrowed down. You can likely find a cheaper switch but it won't last as long as a OEM PNP switch. I have never replaced one on a 960 so I am not sure how long it will take.
No damage is being done to my knowledge. It just may fail to start for you. If it does, roll the shifter through the range about 20 times and try it again. If you have access to a salvage yard, you may want to try a used one. It may cost you $20 and have a 30 day warranty.
Hello Robert thank you so much for the information it is truly an excellent video I just have one question and that is what is the normal cost for the PNP switch? And thank you again
Hi Robert, when the weather gets colder, the auto trans on my 96 850 T5 doesn't want to upshift to second gear. The fluid was flushed with the IPD kit 2 years ago, so the fluid in not the issue. Can a bad PNP switch cause upshift issues. After it warms up it shifts great. Also in warmer temps it shifts perfect. Any thoughts would be appreciated. No flashing arrow or CEL.
@@RobertDIY Finally got a CEL and flashing arrow code P0705. Symptoms seem a little different than yours. After warm up and clearing code it shifted fine. This is the second winter season that I didn't get any upshifts during cold starts. So, looks like I need a PNP switch. Can't complain after 24 years!!!! Merry Christmas and Bless your whole family.
Robert, these videos have been my starting point for any problem with my '97 850. You are the man, thank you so much. With that said, I was hoping you might offer your opinion as to where you would start to resolve a new problem I have. I know my way around most cars but given that problems, especially electrical, can manifest themselves in a variety of ways l thought I might try you first before I start replacing parts. Problem: cursing at 40-50 mph it slips out of gear and into neutral (I assume) when you stop the car (running fine) shift to park and back to drive, nothing. Turn the key off, in park, restart the car and it shifts normally. Thoughts on where I might start looking. Thanks
I have a 94 850 Turbo sedan that does not shift passed 2nd in the morning. Once it is parked, it will not start for 20-30 minutes but when it does there are no problems. It runs well and shifts perfectly for the rest of the day. It can sit for 8-10 hours on the same day and still start just fine. But, every morning it will do the same thing again. I'm wondering if the PNP could be going out and that is the problem?
Hey Robert, around 7:20 you mention that there can be issues if the cable alignment doesn't go back to how it was with the two screws. What issues can arise from screwing up this step?
Ok. I replaced my pnp switch a few months ago because the car was continuously falling into limp mode. Since replacing it, it doesn't do it anymore, but every so often when the car is either hard braking, braked at a stop light for a long time, or left parked and on for an extended time (I was trying to unlock my radio), the engine just dies. I turn it off and back on again and it works, but it's an odd intermittent problem. Any ideas as to what it could be? We think it might be trying to jump gear and slipping, but any thoughts are welcome.
i asked a week or so ago about a 94 850 non turbo i completed the valve replacement and the car runs great when i put it in reverse she will fly no hesitation or anything but when i put it in drive i hear the motor revving but the car just acts like it is trying to take off in 3rd what would you recommend for this? Also great job on the detailed videos i would not have been able to do it with out your them
Thanks for you I changed it today two things I forget make sure apply emergency brake or use blocks for tires to block my car moved because I was opening switch and my car moved from park to neutral and it moved I installed switch from eBay cost me 62 dollars it's working fine now let's see how long it will work thanks for your help
Will a issue with the PNP switch or input shaft speed sensor cause a code for incorrect gear ratio (p0730). Car does start and run, drove it home yesterday from work, went to leave this morning and had no reverse, would go into drive and move under its own power.
Hi Robert! I replaced PNP switch and now I still get error 313, if I switch to P(park) or L(low). I can start car, park and neutral position and reverse light is on if I switch R position. TCU is also replaced. The problem occurred when I flush my transmission oil. Oil level is also checked. Transmission works if I don't use P or L. Any ideas what is wrong?
Would this cause a crank but no spark/start issue? Getting fuel, have the flashing arrow when it ran breifly and after changing the cam and crank sensor , just flashing arrow and crank but not even a hint of start, no spark, even after new coul and coil to distributor lead, have new distributor cap and rotor arm to fit, car initially was stalling when going from drive to reverse or park to drive, then would only stay running when throtle is open, would stall at idle.
Hi Robert! My arrow just started flashing yesterday. It seems to shift ok but sometimes it seems to drag in 1st gear. I also checked the transmission fluid when it was cold, I pulled the dipstick out, wiped it off and put it back in then removed it but the transmission dipstick seems to have transmission fluid above the cold line, the same thing after I checked it when the transmission was properly warmed up. My car will start and drive in first gear not 3rd. If that helps. I also have noticed that the W button will not press down like the S and E button for the transmission. Do you have any insights to what is going on with my issue? Thank you for your time.,
First off, pulling that dip stick out in any other situation other than what the manual recommends is a waste of time and will give you bad info. Other than that, you need to get the codes read. What condition is the fluid in? The W can only be engaged when you are at a full stop.
Hi Robert! I got 3 codes: P0123, P0120 & P0108. The W button will not engage in the on position when the car is fully stopped. I ordered my PNP switch today.
Dear Robert, I just finished installing a new PNP Switch -- merci beaucoup to you!! -- shifting properly but the orange arrow is still flashing. What gives? Thank you kindly, Sylvie
Robert, I have a 96 volvo wagon 850t. with trac. Recently replaced the alternator and all accessories and belts. When i got it put back together all of the sudden I have the dreaded flashing arrow with a cel. Scan codes were 230 and 231 throttle position. car was in limp mode, I replaced the pnp and now the car shifts just fine and rev lights work . But...... light is still flasing. Any suggestions? Tx Peter
Hey Robert, my 1999 V70 XC won’t move or rollback in reverse and neutral. The car does however roll forward in neutral and drives forward in drive. Could the PNP switch be causing this? The reverse lights do turn on when reverse is selected in the gear shifter
Thank you so much for this video! My 94 850 nonturbo sedan has been running wonderfully since I replaced it. Shifts beautifully. I replaced it a month ago and my car did the arrow thing again but this time it started up with the arrow flashing and shifts gears just fine. I read on a forum that when you replace the part the car needs to be in neutral. Any ideas? Thanks again!
I have a arrow light that comes on right after I turn the key over then it stay on for like one second then cuts off but my car switches gears smooth and some people say that it's a transmission issue if it starts flashing but could it be the pnp switch? There's no check engine light either and the dealership said that the 850s show that light often what do you think I should do should I replace the switch ?
Yeah it wasn't the transmission or pnp I guess it had something to do with the something in the timing kit because I had that replaced last week just because it had t been changed yet and it hasn't came back on since thanks @Robert DIY
Would the PNP switch cause an 850 to not go into gear? Just bought my first Volvo today and lost all gears while driving, with flashing arrow indicator on the dash. No reverse or forward gears.
I have a 96 Glt and the arrow comes on when I first start the car and shifts a little rough when going to 2nd gear and also the engine revs itself a little when u start the car. Also have smoke coming from the vents inside and the Windows fogged on the morning in the inside I think my heater core needs to be replaced I'm not sure. Also it won't keep pressure inside of the engine where the oil is. Please help and thanks
also on this same car the guy put a 97 motor in his 94 and there is an air hose just to the right of the intake manifold where it bolts up to the head where does this hose go to or is it not used since the car is a 94 and the motor is a 97
Hi Robert, could you do a Video on the 960 / S90 PNP switch? Seems to be a common problem on these cars but the switch harder is locate and access on the 960, is it a much bigger job? Thanks
robert i have a 1995 volvo that shifts until the trans starts to warm up, and the arrow starts flashing. then the car shifts into what seems to be a higher gear. stop the car and shut it off and it will start shifting again do you have any idea what this might be ?
fenderjagmeister I have read about that problem but not any real solutions. Have you had the fluid changed? It may be the PNP switch, that is where I would start.
It is a 95 volvo 850 turbo. I replaced the Pnp with a Chinese version and I guess it broke, put in a used oem one. Now I have a different problem. The car won't move at all on drive gear,3,L or reverse. There is a noise coming from the transmission. transmission fruil is good. The oem P np switch came out of a newer volvo. I think a 2004. can that be the problem? how can I know if my transmission is not broken?
+Andres Cardenas Those parts are very different. Get the proper part. Check the part on a parts website and see which ones will work. Likely from '94 - '99.
Hi , I have a 2000 v70 volvo wagon. First the ABS light and the ESP light, then the upshift arrow came on, speedo quits, and trouble shifting into first after a stop, only a code reading my local parts store found is “output shaft speed sensor” “no signal”. Not sure if all related or not. Replaced the PNP, still have same problems. Looking for the nearest lake to shove this thing into, should be hard here in Minnesota... Any ideas, guys? Thanks!
First. Thanks for your videos. I followed your video step by step, and replaced it for a new one. Now my stays on first gear and would not change. what can I do or what do I need to reset. thank you
I was told that it happened suddenly and I pulled a gear position sensor code otherwise known as neutral safety switch and PNP and yes the fluid is very dirty and excessive overfilled. I had it emptied and will fill it with new fluid. Would pour in leaking seal fluid be safe for the tranny be safe? Thanks for the response! Robert DIY
Oh! While I'm at it, the economy and sports selection next to shifter, what does the green and red light mean? I dont see any ,ention of it in manual, owner manual. Thanks again. Robert DIY
Robert, PLEASE REMEMBER to mention that you need to remove the damned TIE WRAPS before pulling on the pins and that the easier way is to push the tab and grab the harness and pull and it should come out.
Sandy Crowley I doubt it. When I got my car it would go into reverse and first at the same time. Reverse for about a second, then first would kick in and they would fight each other and first would win.
A guy at work is selling his Volvo 850 (1997) for $500 here is what he says is wrong with it. Biggest issue is that it doesn't go in reverse. In Reverse, it goes forward. In Neutral, it goes forward. If you leave it in gear and turn the car off, it can roll backwards, so it's pretty inconvenient. However, it runs good and drives forward perfectly well. I've researched it and it looks like the PMP switch is bad, which from what I can tell can be fixed without taking it to a body shop. BTW, I really enjoy your videos, very instructive. I'm not afraid to tackle any mechanical tasks with clear instructions :-)
HI Robert, right nowI have p0730 code and on the obd I A1:3-2-2 incorrect gear ratio. I have had the flashing up arrow like twice in the last two years and stall out. I dont have the pnp switch code(i think 3-1-3) Should I replace the PNP anyways? thanks in advance for any tips.
Rarely, I recall about once last year. It happen about 1 month ago when flashing up arrow came on and it will not get into gear. I let the car sit and shifted the rower back and forth dozen times. Right it drives fine. my car loves the drain and fill. I will do like 2 more in the near future but this issue and the error code has me worried.
Hey Robert would a bad pnp switch cause a crank no start on these volvos ive been having a intermintant crank no start issue that always shows up with a flashing transmission arrrow im wondering if i replace or clean my pnp switch if my car will stop having intermintant crank no start problems or if i should be looking at other components ive watched alot of your videos i have good crank and cam sensors have fuel at my rails and spark at my plugs what else cause these cars to cranks and no start im really stuck here any help would be appreciated
Ok thanks n 1 more question my 93 850 have 108 on the dash i changed the pnp switch but everytime i put it in. reverse or neutral the car still drives forward like its in drive help me please????
if it has over 175k then id look into a fuel pump...if your siting at a light and it stalls out.. driving at speed as well when its really bad... I drove months like that it would stall out and id start it back up in say 10-15 seconds until one day I had to flat bed it home the pump was burn out... $400 bucks later as all I could get in 2 days or less was a real BOSH pump aftermarket was 1.5 weeks out so I learned my lesson.
Does Robert or anyone know where the gear position sensor is at on a 98 v90? Please tell me it's not where I think it is, between the top of the transmission and the body... which requires removal of the trans?
@@RobertDIY Thanks, I thought I had looked for that schematic but your comment made me look deeper and yes it's on top of the bell housing which is under the firewall. All I can get to is the connector on the side. Hadn't driven it for a while and after driving, the switch may have 'cleaned' itself. Hoping the code stays gone bc this job is NOT simple on a 98 v90 😂
Hello Robert! I was driving home from a long trip when I suddenly got a flashing arrow and a check engine light. When I got home and read the codes and I had a p1618 and a p0740. Could this be my pnp or my solenoids? Thanks
Robert DIY I have a 99 v70 glt I found out my trans was low and leaking out and I couldn't engage gears. My axle seal blew out after I put in new axles so I'm hoping my trans isn't fried
Hi Robert. My car have flashing arrow light. When i start the car in P position it will start in 3rd gear. But when i start in N in will start in 1st gear like normal. What would be the issue here ?
if the car is in limp mode it will start out in 3rd gear, that will make it feel sluggish. If that is the only code you can replace it. However the video explains the symptoms.
Hey Robert.... Im have a very hard time split the plug into 3. I put WD40 all over the switch. I pull with all my might and the plug will not move. Help any tricks you can share with me.
Robert, for real for the last year now (since I got the 97 850 T-5) you have been an indispensable source of knowledge, this video helped me fully service my PNP switch and my car is starting and shifting like a champ, thanks you!
You are welcome
All your Volvo videos are so good! No useless dialogue just simple clear instructions
Thanks for watching.
Robert your videos are my go to. We have been repairing our 96 Volvo for a few years watching your clear videos. 250000.and still running .We have a place called Harbor freight that we can purchase tools real cheap. They are not necessarily for the professional but for the shade tree mechanic they work quite well
Thanks for watching. We also have Harbor Freight.
My reverse lights had stopped working and bulbs were OK so next stop was here at the PNP switch.
I was able to service the PNP whilst it was still connected... i.e. I didn't take the gearbox socket apart ( I tried and failed!)
I had already obtained 3 C shaped pieces of copper as a kit (from ebay) which slide around to make contact at various positions. It was just a matter of taking the screws out, and pulling the switch apart and carefully replacing the copper parts. Clean and grease and reassemble. Lights now working woohoo!
Thanks again Robert for a really useful video!
Awesome
I live in Thailand . Today I'm complete replace PNP switch on Volvo 850 T5R. With guide line form your video. Thank you very much Robert. My next job is replace PCV. I'm learning from your video too. I think next week, I do it.
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Did this today mine was riveted so I ground off the rivets knocked them out cleaned all contacts and replaced Di-electric grease replaced rivets with bolts and so far so good! Your videos have helped me immensely over the years!
Thanks for watching.
Hi Robert,
This is the best video about changing and repairing the PNP switch on a V850 automatic I've seen to date.
Regards from two Danish electronic engineers (me and my wife) with at couple of old Volvo's in the driveway.
oakey
Thanks for watching.
We're going to have to start calling you Dr. Robert for you truly have a PhD in Volvo knowledge.
LOL Thanks
Another time you saved me!
I couldn’t figure out how to dismantle the connector.
Your videos are such a big big help!
All blessings to you Robert! ❤️
thanks for watching.
Thanks for making this video, when I first watched it I was a little lost, but when I received my new switch and actually started working on it it was a piece of cake. It look me right around 60 minutes to complete, with very little trouble.
Caboose Nice to hear. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video Robert!! I have used a ton of your videos!
Just a quick side note: for pulling out the wiring harness you don’t actually have to pull on the pin, you can pull on the tab on the pnp switch while prying the blue tab. This keeps the pins pretty clean.
What tab?
Beter than a Haynes manual any day. Thanks for the vlogs Robert.
Glad you like them!
Boom Fixed! Pulled the PNP out, cleaned i and now no more arrow. Thanks for the video man. Knocking out all the issues with my free C70 with 222k miles thanks to you. Still a few things left.
+OneHundredYen very nice.
you just save me $500 just by making this video.....
On 1999 Volvo S70 GLT Engine and arrow light was on
After i scanned it,,,,,,the code was for PNP switch
i watched this video it a couple of times in full before i try changing my PNP switch
And low and behold i did it today......after i change it my engine and arrow light was still on
So i hooked up my scanner and clear code and life is beautiful again and lets hope that it...happy new year cheers:=))))))
+wayne watson Cool, thanks for watching.
So, I'll do that now.
your videos are the best. Thank you so much for making these, man. You've saved me a lot of trouble and made my life a lot easier by doing these.
Good deal, thanks for watching.
Thanks!
Chris
Chris Long PNP switch or starter. I'd roll the shifter a few times and if that doesn't work, remove the starter for testing.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Volvo s70 love you
my 1999 volvo s70 when put in reverse will do nothing but the reverslights will be on and when you press the gas it just revs the engine it is showing the arrow and will sometimes down shift to a low gear could this be the PNP switch
Is the fluid level good?
Ya the transmission fluid is at the right level and still has the red color
Leave it to the professionals Job well done with precision
Hello Robert, thanks a lot for this movie. It really helped us fixing the car.. we never would have found out how to open the connector without your help!!
Best regards from Germany!!
***** Woohoo! Any high speed runs down the Autobahn?
Robert DIY
Well, more or less, the Volvo goes maximum 200 km/h ;-)
We have one more question: it seems, that the Volvo did not notice completely, that he got the new switch. We have reversing light, the arrow is off, but sometimes it feels, as if he is not in a gear at all. Do you know, if we should do a reset of the TCM? We were thinking about disconnecting the battery overnight?
Best regards,
Sabine and Daniel
Transmission may be going out. Have you changed the fluid? - ua-cam.com/video/kyM3Z-RWvcw/v-deo.html
Robert DIY Yes, this was the first thing we did. We changed the fluid twice.
Then we changed the pnp switch. Then it was better, but not really good (as described above). Now we had the battery disconnected overnight. And now we will make a longer test drive. See you later.
OK, hope it works out for you. When I purchased my car the trans was already bad.
Thank you so much for the video! Actually all of your video's have been lifesavers for my budget!
Good deal, that's the plan.
Good video robert! I have been watching you for a few years now. I appreciate you brother!
Thanks for watching
Thanks for your articulate explanation and step by step process. I hope my 96 Volvo 850 will get fixed am sick and tired of having the light pop up yet mechanic seems not to get a solution over that arrow. God bless you
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Terrific videos on the volvo V-70 . Much mahalo nui loa. aloha, fred
Thanks for watching
Good wrenching as always. Great Volvo!
thanks.
You the man, Robert. Thank you so much.
You are welcome
Thank you sir. After inventing some new cuss words we are back on the road!!!!
Excellent!
+janine chambers magee Ouch!
Oh boy, you're a savior Robert....... Thank you.
You are welcome.
thanks for the video. rowing it back and fourth fixed my problem- for now. i bookmarked this for the inevitable time i have to wrestle with this tiger
+robert coyle Good.
Thank you. This will make the job so much easier for me. Thanks for all your videos.
Cool, thanks for watching.
It does sound like a PNP switch problem. Sadly I am not 💯 percent sure where it is on the transmission.
@@RobertDIY Thanks for your reply - I really appreciate it.
Bob Kunz Robert all set. I found a white paper with great illustrations of transmission. Reverse lights are on.
Bob Kunz where did you find the white paper. The obvious answer is to google it I guess.
+D GOldman I don't know. How many miles? How often was the transmission serviced?
Hey Robert thanx for videos they are very useful for keeping my 96 850 glt automatic runing. reverse light not workinhg always when I put it in reverse. When it does not work I just put some preasure on stick and light goes on. No other problems than that it start in parking or neutral no hard shift or yelow arow on dashboard blinking. Is there anything else to consider before I go in and change pnp swich?
Man, don't change the PNP switch for that, just adjust it a little.
Thanks again! My mechanic is going to view this as soon as I send it. (Your the Volvo Man!")Update coming after results. Keep up the great work...
Thanks for watching.
Thank you.
I would check the parking break
Thanks!
+steverahe Alignment issues are exaggerated. I did eyeball it. Working on it in the car would be great as long as you don't drop anything.
Is that the same company that sells the heater core?
Doing this today! Thanks Robert, you’re the man
You are welcome
Hi Robert I have followed this video, but I have hit a problem with removing the 3-part electrical connection. I have tried various thin blades to depress the clip at the en, but the connections wont shift. I think I have damaged the clip. Is it possible to disconnect the other sets of wires from the top of the gbax & remove the whole lot? Great videos by the way.
No sir, you need to get that to separate.
@@RobertDIY Thanks Robert. I will have to do it in the engine bay & be very careful!!
Yikes! People like to ignore that warning. Where did you get the PNP switch?
Robert DIY got it from Amazon. I ordered another one, brand is URO. As soon as the rain stops I’ll change it out. By the car rolling will it cause problems? Hopefully when I change it again it will work. If not I’m screwed.
Hey Robert, big fan of your channel. I've heard that a bad solenoid can cause the arrow light to flash as well. Sporadically my '99 v70 will fall into limp home mode. Other times the transmission shifts fine. Do you think it could be the solenoid?
Carter Allen That is correct and possible. You'll have to take the car to a shop to be scanned.
soooooo helpful thank you...you are very clear in explanation and patient...thanks again
Thanks for watching.
What error codes do you have? Have you tried rolling the shifter?
I just (about) have my t5 back together after doing this, but when I go to put it in neutral, the gear shift won't move, even when I push the little release to the right of the gear selector. I'm at a loss
It's stuck in park?
this video is great, I have a 96 960 wagon.
Thank you. can i still drive this car and am i causing any damage? it will be two weeks before i can aford this job.
No damage is being done to my knowledge. It just may fail to start for you. If it does, roll the shifter through the range about 20 times and try it again. If you have access to a salvage yard, you may want to try a used one. It may cost you $20 and have a 30 day warranty.
Thank you so much.
Yes sir you said it’s 3 pieces what are the other pieces to the pnp sensor mine are broken.
One piece comes out with the switch, the other 2 pieces are wired into the transmission.
Thank you Robert for your help. one more question that I have. How can I know if my transmission is broken?
+Andres Cardenas Get it running and read codes.
Hello Robert thank you so much for the information it is truly an excellent video I just have one question and that is what is the normal cost for the PNP switch? And thank you again
You need to check a parts website.
I doubt it. Have you scanned it for codes?
@@RobertDIY Finally got a CEL and flashing arrow code P0705. Symptoms seem a little different than yours. After warm up and clearing code it shifted fine. This is the second winter season that I didn't get any upshifts during cold starts. So, looks like I need a PNP switch. Can't complain after 24 years!!!! Merry Christmas and Bless your whole family.
Replaced PNP switch and now shifts perfectly regardless of temperature.
Thanks
+Angie Hurtado what codes are in the system?
+Robert DIY have you checked the fluid level?
I have a 94 850 Turbo sedan that does not shift passed 2nd in the morning. Once it is parked, it will not start for 20-30 minutes but when it does there are no problems. It runs well and shifts perfectly for the rest of the day. It can sit for 8-10 hours on the same day and still start just fine. But, every morning it will do the same thing again. I'm wondering if the PNP could be going out and that is the problem?
I doubt it.
ua-cam.com/video/bfeiZxhJgxY/v-deo.html
It doesn't throw any codes on it.
Still need to check.
Hey Robert, around 7:20 you mention that there can be issues if the cable alignment doesn't go back to how it was with the two screws. What issues can arise from screwing up this step?
No crank.
I don't even know what kind of car you have...
ua-cam.com/video/NhtUXZTurzo/v-deo.html
Sorry, it's the S70 GLT
i asked a week or so ago about a 94 850 non turbo i completed the valve replacement and the car runs great when i put it in reverse she will fly no hesitation or anything but when i put it in drive i hear the motor revving but the car just acts like it is trying to take off in 3rd what would you recommend for this? Also great job on the detailed videos i would not have been able to do it with out your them
+Justin Funderburk Have you scanned the system for codes? Is the Check Engine light on? Is the transmission bad?
what is the big deal with adjustment? I am guessing the slotted holes in the switch housing is where the adjustment would be?
+j83460 what I show is what I do.
I guess some people make more of it than is needed, thanks Robert for your help
They really do. Do know that the car will pop out of park when the connection is unplugged. If not on a level ground, IT WILL ROLL AWAY.
Thanks for you I changed it today two things I forget make sure apply emergency brake or use blocks for tires to block my car moved because I was opening switch and my car moved from park to neutral and it moved I installed switch from eBay cost me 62 dollars it's working fine now let's see how long it will work thanks for your help
be safe.
Will a issue with the PNP switch or input shaft speed sensor cause a code for incorrect gear ratio (p0730). Car does start and run, drove it home yesterday from work, went to leave this morning and had no reverse, would go into drive and move under its own power.
Yes
Would this switch being bad cause the trans to not engage in reverse occasionally?
I don't think so.
Sounds like something is wrong/bad in the transmission.
@@RobertDIY New PNP sensor was faulty..
Next time I buy original Volvo parts only!!
Would this cause a crank but no spark/start issue? Getting fuel, have the flashing arrow when it ran breifly and after changing the cam and crank sensor , just flashing arrow and crank but not even a hint of start, no spark, even after new coul and coil to distributor lead, have new distributor cap and rotor arm to fit, car initially was stalling when going from drive to reverse or park to drive, then would only stay running when throtle is open, would stall at idle.
ua-cam.com/video/NhtUXZTurzo/v-deo.html
what kind of car do you have?
Hi robert. My dashboard lights suddenly wont turn on but warning lights working. Got a video for this? Love your videos

Me thinks I need to reset my codes...
Tx Peter
+Peter Davidovitch have you checked the wires at the TPS?
Hey Robert, my 1999 V70 XC won’t move or rollback in reverse and neutral. The car does however roll forward in neutral and drives forward in drive. Could the PNP switch be causing this? The reverse lights do turn on when reverse is selected in the gear shifter
probably bad parking brakes.
Thanks Robert, I’ll start there and see what I find
Jamea Moss If it goes off within a few seconds, why worry about it?
Yeah it wasn't the transmission or pnp I guess it had something to do with the something in the timing kit because I had that replaced last week just because it had t been changed yet and it hasn't came back on since thanks @Robert DIY
unsure if the pnp switch is related to the error code p1618? really stumped on this one
+Caitlin Marshall Have you tried to Google it? What kind of car do you have?
Would the PNP switch cause an 850 to not go into gear? Just bought my first Volvo today and lost all gears while driving, with flashing arrow indicator on the dash. No reverse or forward gears.
A axle probably come out. If they are all the way in, my guess would be a bad torque converter or low fluid level.
Please help and thanks

also on this same car the guy put a 97 motor in his 94 and there is an air hose just to the right of the intake manifold where it bolts up to the head where does this hose go to or is it not used since the car is a 94 and the motor is a 97

got the same car but the car has never had reverse lights. some times they flicker off and on....how would I adjust it?
Thanks Robert!

robert i have a 1995 volvo that shifts until the trans starts to warm up, and the arrow starts flashing. then the car shifts into what seems to be a higher gear. stop the car and shut it off and it will start shifting again do you have any idea what this might be ?
fenderjagmeister I have read about that problem but not any real solutions. Have you had the fluid changed? It may be the PNP switch, that is where I would start.
iam getting a 322 code that says it's a hot wire on the mass air flow
Thanks!
+Kathy Raine Not really. If the problem was sudden? You should have it scanned by a Volvo tech.
you're right, I was trying to save money, but ended up wasting it. Thanks for your time, and I love your videos, thanks!
First. Thanks for your videos. I followed your video step by step, and replaced it for a new one. Now my stays on first gear and would not change. what can I do or what do I need to reset. thank you
+Andres Cardenas What kind of car do you have?
I would like the location of the pnp switch on a 1996 960 Volvo
should be on top of the transmission. Follow the shift cable.
Would a bad pnp cause reverse not to work? Thanks!
Jesse Lambert If it happened suddenly, probably. If gradually, probably a tranny issue. Any codes? How old is the fluid?
I was told that it happened suddenly and I pulled a gear position sensor code otherwise known as neutral safety switch and PNP and yes the fluid is very dirty and excessive overfilled. I had it emptied and will fill it with new fluid. Would pour in leaking seal fluid be safe for the tranny be safe? Thanks for the response! Robert DIY
Oh! While I'm at it, the economy and sports selection next to shifter, what does the green and red light mean? I dont see any ,ention of it in manual, owner manual. Thanks again. Robert DIY

Will this switch cause the vehicles reverse not to work at all. Someone is selling a S70 that believe the sensor for it went bad.
+Roger Oliver I doubt it. Sounds like a bad transmission.
Robert, PLEASE REMEMBER to mention that you need to remove the damned TIE WRAPS before pulling on the pins and that the easier way is to push the tab and grab the harness and pull and it should come out.
+D GOldman Thanks for watching and sharing.
1997 850 Volvo Sedan won't go in reverse, only forward. Will the pnp switch effect the reverse not engaging?
Ok, have you watched the Pre-Purchase video?
One of my friends drove his 850 125,000 miles with no reverse.
Wow, yes, I found your video very informative. Thanks so much
HI Robert, right nowI have p0730 code and on the obd I A1:3-2-2 incorrect gear ratio. I have had the flashing up arrow like twice in the last two years and stall out. I dont have the pnp switch code(i think 3-1-3) Should I replace the PNP anyways? thanks in advance for any tips.
+Sonny luong transmission probably going bad, when was the last time you replaced the fluid?
+Robert DIY
I did 3 drain and fill in the last 1 and half month(the most recent is 2 weeks ago).
+Sonny luong were you having issues before then?
Rarely, I recall about once last year. It happen about 1 month ago when flashing up arrow came on and it will not get into gear. I let the car sit and shifted the rower back and forth dozen times. Right it drives fine. my car loves the drain and fill. I will do like 2 more in the near future but this issue and the error code has me worried.
+Sonny luong What car do you have?
How do I ask Robert a question?
That's twice, for the same question. 🤷🏾♂️

fenderjagmeister Volvo 850, S70, V70 Fuel Pump Relay Location and Test - Auto Repair Series
if it has over 175k then id look into a fuel pump...if your siting at a light and it stalls out.. driving at speed as well when its really bad...
Heck, I might start pulling them from the wrecker until I find a new one and keep it in my stash. $20 for a pump, $36 for an entire sending unit.
Does Robert or anyone know where the gear position sensor is at on a 98 v90? Please tell me it's not where I think it is, between the top of the transmission and the body... which requires removal of the trans?
I'm not sure. You may want to check a Volvo parts website.
Thanks
I don't know, maybe a transmission problem. Is it idling smooth?
I don't even know what kind of car you have.
Robert DIY I have a 99 v70 glt I found out my trans was low and leaking out and I couldn't engage gears. My axle seal blew out after I put in new axles so I'm hoping my trans isn't fried
Ok, hope it works out for you.
Hi Robert. My car have flashing arrow light. When i start the car in P position it will start in 3rd gear. But when i start in N in will start in 1st gear like normal. What would be the issue here ?
Probably a bad PNP switch. Have you checked for codes?
Great video 👍
Thanks for watching
would this cause my car to not accelerate quickly?
+Shane Thompson 1999 S70 is what I have
+Shane Thompson Nope. What are your error codes?
+Shane Thompson have you had the codes read?
+Robert DIY I had them read, it popped a 650 according to the reader it pointed to this switch also,
if the car is in limp mode it will start out in 3rd gear, that will make it feel sluggish. If that is the only code you can replace it. However the video explains the symptoms.
Robert, do you know if the S70 PNP switches are compatible for the 850?

Hey Robert.... Im have a very hard time split the plug into 3. I put WD40 all over the switch. I pull with all my might and
the plug will not move. Help any tricks you can share with me.
+Richard Almeida Pin knife, they are strong enough to release the latch.
my question is on a 1995 Volvo 960 neutral safety switch how do you diagnose this issue, code p0500 do you happen to know how this works???
Not other than what you see in this video.
