  • If there was ever a time when kids should be reading the Bible, that time is now. The direction of the next generation is hinging on the spiritual formation of this generation. Our kids live in a world where they are bombarded with deception and temptation at every turn. If we want them to be able to spot counterfeit or to discern between truth and error, they need to to be familiar with the authentic Word of God! Because of this, I want to find ways to help our kids develop this habit.

I love the way you simplify it..we have struggled to keep consistent with this in our homeschool day lately with a new baby and really having too much expectation of a sermonized lesson each time. Looking at it as a habit is so helpful..trusting that when we (and our kids) hide His word in our hearts, God’s word will not return void.

This was so amazing. You have an incredible way of communicating that is clear and simple. We own a lot of those books already, but I never thought to “put it on the schedule” and loved how you outlined what you do. I actually feel like I have a step-by-step now for teaching my children how to read the Bible on their own. Thank you!!!

Thank you! Wonderful! So glad to hear this helped you formulate a plan. It's encouraging to see other families making this a priority in their homes.

I have just this past month or two required a devotional reading (my oldest is 9 and also looks up the scripture with me) and I read the devotional to my other ones not reading well yet, as part of their school checklist. I’m off the ball for a while honestly, but I was also reading the children storybook Bible each day aloud. They love it! The check list really does help and I haven’t seen it as a bad thing at all. We have gone through three storybook bibles. My six year old now is reading the NIrV adventure bible (he’s very advanced) and I just say 2-5 minutes and he just loves it. Thanks for the encouraging message! I’m going to go on the blog to look at it there as well!

I completely agree! Kids need parents to help them form good habits. Personal Bible time is a great habit to start young.
I use weekly checklists for my daughter and Personal Bible Time is the first thing on her list before she begins other subjects. I might move it to her Morning Chart though because I want her to see it’s not just during school time, but a daily habit like brushing teeth. She usually reads during her breakfast time so she’s already pretty good at this. 👍🏻

You’ve put into words all the things I’ve had bouncing around in my head. I do something very similar. I read over breakfast and they also have their own personal reading time on their checklist. Our evening family readings have been hit and miss as our family grows. But it is something I want to make a habit of.
I also assign “beginning reader” Bibles and move them up as they get older and grow in their reading skills.
Another challenge I’ve found is doing our morning reading during non-school days or over breaks. Is this something you do daily wether you guys are “in session” or not?

Glad to hear! Sounds like we are pretty similar in how we do this! During summer and holidays, I occasionally still read to them in the morning. It depends on what we are doing and I am pretty laid back about it. If it's a quiet morning with nothing going on, I usually read. Reading to my kids is one of my favorite things to do with them. It's bonding time for us.

I loved the books you use to help your kids read the Bible. We also use the action Bible for our kids. However, my kids spend time with our Heavenly Father each day and read one page a day. We also homeschool and use the A.C.E curriculum which is based on the Bible. During dinner time, we complete biblical scripture cards where we memorize scripture. The kids really like it. We pray throughout the day too. Thank you for all the ideas and help you give us all. God bless.
I got the scripture cards idea from: ua-cam.com/video/f1wgNZ_Krtc/v-deo.html
