11:15 - the main reason a game for one system doesn't work for another is that the hardware is fundamentally different. Software is compiled into machine code that is for a specific processor or set of processors, memory architecture, and so on. That's what an emulator does - it reads the executable code written for one system, and then does what it thinks is the equivalent actions on another system.
Note this is also why law - in both the USA and UK - has determined that emulation is legal. Because the emulator just pretends to run the game as real hardware. An emulator does not change the game itself.
Came from the transvestigation AA video (I'm intersex and nonbinary and have been accused every which way, lol, it's honestly kind of hilarious) and I have to say, your pun name game is on point, capcom should look into hiring you lol :)
Great video Kyle, this is a very important problem in the games industry to discuss and draw attention to! Obviously it’s inevitable that some art will be lost to time, we don’t have a copy of every painting that’s ever been painted or book that’s been written for example, but if I buy a book or painting I at least know it won’t disappear from my house one day due to complex and obtuse licensing issues. Some of my favourite games are both old and only available digitally and it’s sad feeling like one day I might have no way to access them.
Another game with the kind of IP licensing issues Golden Eye had and Star Trek Legacy still has is Battle for Middle Earth. It's not quite as popular as Golden Eye, perhaps, but it's still incredibly well-known in the RTS community and it's popular enough that there are multiple attempts to revamp or recreate it in progress, as well as multiple different ways to "illegally" download and play the original version. I really wish EA and the Tolkien Estate and whoever else might be needed could reach an agreement like the one that got Golden Eye rereleased. Or better yet (from a player's perspective, if not an archivist's) follow in the footsteps of Age of Empires and release a polished up Definitive Edition.
Fantastic video. That 83% reference was jarring. I had no idea it was that bad. What's worse, I'm certain it's deliberate in the worse way. At a game show a couple years, a SONY exec said he was sick of old Playstation asking about backwards compatibility for ps1-2 games. _"Why do all these guys want to still play Gran Turismo 3? We got GT7 on ps5. Play that instead."_ It's not that these companies don't want go spend the money for small returns. They want to kill that market. Even though less old-school gamers from the '90s and '00s are inclined to sell out $600 for a system that will play their hundreds of old games.
Ha! I just realized that you have exactly the same taste in LEGO as me. I have the orchids and the pirate ship and have been eyeing the space exploration themed set for a while.

There's a historical crisis in the world. It goes way beyond just the games industry.

It's a shame you missed the chance to point out Accursed Farms to viewers interested in video game preservation.
Seconded, check out their recent videos.
Forever grateful to see Star Trek Legacy being mentioned in a UA-cam video in 2024.
"The era before DVRs?" Just skipping over the entire VCR era like that is cruel to those of us who lived through it. :)

Hey Kyle, you probably get this a lot but I'm curious as to what voice disorder you have, great video btw!
I don’t have one, this is just what I sound like.

Walmart can’t just go in to your garage and sell your necklaces 😂
Awesome, and important, video!
Sadly their are very few left

A man of culture as well I see.
@@KyletheScott Likewise. I'm a big fan of the LEGO botanicals because I have a brown thumb and am terrible at keeping real plants alive haha
Trans male or ai? 6:58 Arg mtg xbox mate. Yarg. 7:32 multiplayer sucks. 11:29 emulation. Virtual box 12:42
Neither?
360 was the gamer bro machine to own - it was never cool to own. Ps3 was always better than it
Glad to see the console wars are still alive and well in 2024
