Come and see inside our abandoned 1880s old stone cottage in Ireland. We bought this uninhabitable farmhouse in the Irish countryside and used our life savings to make this move and change our way of life. But was it worth it? Come see what your life savings will buy you!

I am sure when this house is complete, it will be a forever home that is stunning. It will hold stories and memories that will be in your daughter's future and beyond!!! I am so excited for you!!!💚💚💚
Welcome to Ireland, folks. Im sure you will fit in very well and have a brilliant life here. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the house. As things go, it's not in that bad a condition.
Thanks for the warm welcome. Not bad condition at all - we are very lucky it is dry inside, almost a miracle!
What a fantastic house, and you get to live in Ireland! You might find The Yorkshire Carpenter, on UA-cam, a very helpful fellow to follow. He’s been restoring a Victorian?, stone cottage and is a master builder. He may also be available to ask questions of. This will be a wonderful project for you, and I wish you every success!❤️🇨🇦
Thanks for the recommendation, will check them out.
Kinging it with Craig & Amy too. They just bought a similar cottage in Scotland. Happy remodeling 😊
@@Sassygagirl Haha. As much as I love Kinging it, I'm not sure their exactly "experts" you would take tips from. Hard grafters and willing to give it a go, maybe, fun as heck, sure, but basically clueless when it comes to renovations.
You’re lovely people, wishing you well.
You are very fortunate that the construction company you bought it from had done some major work like taking down walls on the ground floor, and gutting the kitchen, bathroom and so on. Here in Northern Italy, there are many houses with the pine ceilings, walls and doors. As long as there is no mold behind them you'll be fine. You can do spot checks behind the pine walls and look from the attic onto the roof side of the pine ceilings. You can easily sand the wood and paint them white. It makes the space feel much larger, and you will preserve the protection from the damp keeping them in place. Thus, you don't have to redo the plaster inside the house as often after heavy rains. For more than a decade I lived in an ancient stone house in a borgo in northern Italy, and trust me when I say that your number one problem with a stone house will always be damp coming in from the outside. Wishing you both the best of luck. It's a very special property.
we bought a bit of a doer upper in western Norway, same situation almost with wood panelled ceilings which have darkened with age..painted with what they call 'sperregrunn' fırst to stop colour and knots showing through the paint...some sort of sealant I guess, then went with 'cotton white', not as stark as simple white (it's what the Swedish ppl use) a bit softer and warmer feel, just bounces any light around nicely..works a treat...bit of a job ref the painting with grooves etc but well worth it...
Fireplace and ceiling are gorgeous!! Window sills, and large window nooks-love them!
when the only heat in your house was the fireplace, you made it your wall. when the stone got warmed from the fire, it spread through the wall, hence more heat.
Absolutely! Makes total sense. The same principle with modern underfloor heating too - the entire concrete slab is the thermal mass equivalent to the big stone built fireplace wall.
I've seen people "float" the bed in the center of the room, with a wardrobe butted up to it to form a headboard/wall/divider. The wardrobe was heavy enough so it wouldn't slide, and they finished off the back of it as a decorative headboard. It also created a dressing area behind the bed. Just a thought💕(or alternatively create an office space❤)
Nice idea, thanks for the inspiration.
Such a beautiful cottage in an idyllic location. Will be lovely to watch it being restored. The very best of luck to you. 🍀
Love the style of the Irish Cottage ~ what fun it will be watching your renovation progress! Congratulations.
A bed in the middle of the room isn’t impossible. I’ve seen it done in many cottages and it looks amazing. Just Google some images for ideas
Thanks for the affirmation!
K
Enjoy your grand adventure! My parents at age 50 (in 1976) bought & renovated an old decrepit farm house with 5 of their dozen kids still growing up. Blood, sweat and tears to be sure- but a great satisfaction in taking on the task. You’ve got a beautiful gem there, thanks for sharing!
Blood sweat and tears is a familiar story with us :) Thanks for following along
This is a beautiful cottage and property. Wishing you all the best with restoring it! I am sure it will be lovely! 😊
Lived in Kerry for 8 years , buitiful country my 4 kids grew up there , back in London due to personal reasons but still miss the way of life , good luck and definitely be watching 👍 by the way the property is awesome 🔥
We lived in Kerry as well just outside of Cahersiveen. Couldn’t bear the winters in the end as the storms, wind and rain would go on for months. We loved living there but glad we’re in Spain now where winter is about 3 days rather than 6 months. I love being outside and we didn’t use our garden at all really as the midges and rain kept us inside sadly. On a sunny day, Ireland is the most beautiful country in the world.
We moved to kerry from Surrey 15 years ago and love it, down near Cromane just outside of Killorglin
Consider, seriously, terracing the Steep field where you wanted your veg and fruits next to your cottage. The Portuguese, And Italians terrace their mountains and hills for their farms. I am sure you, with research could do the same.
So much potential and fun times ahead! And of course, laughter, which is the best medicine!😂
This is going to be amazing ,I have to say you two are the best looking couple .I look forward to watching the renovations and your channel grow , Good luck from California
Looks like a lot of potential. With your positive and fun attitude I think you will come out of this with a lovely off grid family home.
TY!
I would keep the wood and add some shiplap walls, Paint the wood white to make it brighter. Now whether or not you want to keep it everywhere is another question. Good luck.
Happy to see you have been able to start the renovations. Have you checked out the You-tube channels for Camper Vibe and the Irish Homestead? They are both renovating old Irish farmhouses, too.
Hey, yes we have been following both @campervibe and @theirishhomestead for a while now, before they had their own Irish projects. Cori and I had decided to purchase in Ireland at the end of '22, so we found it interesting that folks we were following ended up on similar journeys with the same destination. Thanks for following along. K
I suppose the gammy lights can be changed for something far nice. At least they’re wired. That stone wall inside is lovely. Getting rid of the yellow and pink paint will do so much for making the stone work pop. They really did get the place back to front 😅
Starting your journey with you, follow four of you brave souls, keeps me on pins and needles. One I follow is a creative man who is in the Italian alps working on stone homes. Love the couple from Irealnd, welcome to my club. Much love
Just for your info the triangular roof windows were installed because it was a way of introducing natural light into loft rooms but without increasing property taxes. We have the same in France.
In Arizona we call those glass rooms "Sun Rooms" and they are Lovely, for the views overlooking your little farm....Many people build in benches around the 3 walls, with cushioned tops, for places to sit and sometimes shelves under the cushioned benches for storing books, makong a nice little light infused reading nook. (can even have a little portable table for the center, to set your tea on 🥰 Have fun...cant wait to watch your progress - new Sub ❤
They are definately sun traps for sure, catches the Sun after 2pm until sunset. Would be a perfect little reading nook! Thanks for following along
The cottage has lots of character and is charming nestled in the beautiful landscape. The solarium areas could be a delightful sitting area to watch the season's and weather roll in. The wooden ceiling remind me of swedish homes.. GOOD luck with the reno's. Looking forward to following your adventure.
Thanks for following along
Finally, I've been waiting forever to see the renovations ... GOOD JOB! FROM us in Alaska
What a lovely quirky house! Looking forward to seeing how you get on. I watched the tour on your other channel too but I like how you’ve made a dedicated house channel ❤
Ahh thank you!! So pleased to have you with us 😍
Good luck both .Excited to follow your journey .A.Sandra xx❤
It's going to be beautiful! I hope you restore the inglenook! The huge chimney breast upstairs is so cool
It would be really cool. Need to investigate to see if its possible.
Greetings from Canada. Boy that place has potential in spades! I love the glass bump outs and the stone and vaulted ceilings! Oh my. The developer put a lot of money into the glass and windows! I hope you keep the ceilings. Just paint them or sand them and whitewash them. Can’t way to see where you take it. Good luck.
Look up how to use the saw correct. The piece you saw off has to have the ability to fall away. If you put the plank on two points and cut in the middle, the saw blade will always be squeezed and kick back! Ask a cabinetmaker or carpenter please, before you hurt yourself or someone else.
You are absolutely correct and thank you for pointing out my folly. Unfortunately at the moment I don't have the luxury of a workbench or any saw horses. I am poverty mode, working on the floor most of the time. The saw is pretty low HP, and will bog and bind up the blade before causing any kickback.
K
All the best, looking forward to following your adventures 😊.
Ok, Im on the hook and subscribed... best of luck from Scotland
You got me at "slow and painful process!" 😄😄 Will definitely be following along to see your progress! Best of luck on your new adventure!
Good luck ☘
sand the ceiling back and light stain it white
to bring the grain out
would look stunning
Subbed cant wait to see what you do to the property
My guess is I think you are probably going to tackle the bedroom roof and beams etc first.
It will take time but it will be gorgeous, I’m sure.
What a wonderful, fairytale place you have bought. Like bwitched said, you are a very good looking couple, and now you have a beautiful sleeping beauty of a family home, waiting to be woken up, with your loving hands, along with your daughter. Wishing you love, happiness, good health and Good Luck on the months of renovation to come, and making a lovely natural garden - I shall be following you, as I love interior design, and anything arty crafty, as I am a pottery painter, and nature lover. Blessings to you three from Jilly & Madge the rescue greyhound, from West Devon, England. xxx
We love Devon. Was first place we considered for our new life. We didn't have deep enough pockets to do what we are doing here back in the UK. Thanks for following along
Your ceilings can be absolutely stunning. Here in Norway paneled ceilings are normal. Both in older and newer houses. I have it too. However they are painted and that make a huuuuuge difference. Dont tear them down. Do a search instead. That should save you a lot of money and a lot of time.
My first thought is you two are away wi the fairies! Welcome to beautiful Ireland. God bless you both and your new property. I wish you all the best with your plans. Vera and brother William in the North West.
🙏 Thanks for following along
Wow what a dream cottage to restore to its original glory. Lucky find, the land makes it even better.
Reminds me of our first Irish cottage which we bought in the 90's. It didn't have the extentions on it like yours, but we added some more valuable and livable space to it ourselves later on.
No bathroom, no toilet, no septic tank either.
We also stayed in our caravan for a few weeks, until the neighbour's bull thought it was a good idea to come and rub against said caravan during the night. 😮😳. From then on we decided it was better to just 'camp' inside the cottage. 😅
Looking forward to your journey in the wilds of that beautiful country.
Very similar journey! Wow a bull scratching post - thankfully we have not yet had the pleasure. The caravan is very elevated too because of the slope of the parking space, so it would be a big crash if a bull shifted us 😅
I can't wait to camp in the cottage - my aim for the year
K
It is going to be fantastic once renovated.
are you going to bring back the original fire place, take down the wall blocking it? I think it would probably look better too, especially if they haven't destroyed it but left it intact...
am loving this new section & am very keen to see which way you go; putting new bathrooms in old houses is always a challenge, they always look like an after thought in most (mine is tacked on the back of the house with the laundry) wow over the front door is a nightmare disaster waiting to happen, do you need a bathroom upstairs?
can't wait til the next one comes out
thanx for sharing your cottage dream with us
I would love to take down the wall blocking it. Alas it seems someone has done a proper job blocking it up. It would also render our bedroom fireplace not usable if re-instated. So, lots of hurdles to doing so, not sure which way is right at the minute.
Bathroom upstairs is still undecided too. Biggest problem will be it needing a big ugly waste pipe ruining the beautiful stone walls.
Thanks for following along
I love when i come across new channels , can't wait to follow you both on your exciting journey
I love the cottage, good luck and I can’t wait to see the renovation begin. Hello from Florida USA 🇺🇸
Thank you!
The ceiling is gorgeous just sand and paint white to bring light in
...yes, that sanded off-white finish or bleached-wood look. Depending on how thick the floor is, they could dig a sunken living room.
Wood is very expensive and will only increase in value. I love the beauty of natural wood in a home. There is a lot of space that is painted and that can be white.
Greetings from Bahrain 🇧🇭.
Looking forward seeing you doing a lot of works to restore this beautiful cottage to be very warm for family.
GOD BLESS YOU Guys.
Regards
Thanks for following along
Looking forward to travelling with you on your Irish Cottage adventure
Thanks for following along
You two are absolutely beautiful. I am so excited for all of you on your new property. I am sure it is going to be remarkable. I’m an old man watching you from the US in the state of Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. Take care! Love you both!
Mississippi - woot! Thanks for following along.
You are so lucky that you were able to purchase something sight unseen & not get scammed. I had a friend that got scammed bad. I can’t wait to see what you do with the place, how exciting for you. I hope it turns out to be everything you want.
Sorry to hear about your friend. Thanks for following along
Great new channel! Any way to save the square ceiling? Paint? It's beautiful wood, upstairs too, hope you plan to save it for up cycling later on, cupboards, dresser, storage boxes, and ?¿? Lining the appendages lower walls? 😅 Thanks for taking us along ❣️❣️❣️
Some good ideas there. The ceiling has to come down, as there is a bunch of warped chipboard backing it. The panelling is all pine (albeit very thin) - it won't go to waste. Will be up-cycled for some project somewhere :) Thanks for following along
I've been watching people do this for over 10 years. I'm also British so it's far harder for us to find land that works for the right price.
Thanks for bringing Ireland to my attention!
Glad we could help - when we realised Ireland was not just a possibility, but the best option for many many reasons. It felt like such a relief.
The best of luck to you on this adventure. My wife and I toyed with the idea of bidding on it but I’m so happy you got it. It is a beautiful part of the country.
Wow, thanks so much for the comment, means a lot. Are you local or were you looking to move ? Is that a 250cc in your profile pic? I'm a biker myself!
@@offgridirishhomestead Local enough, about half an hour away. Would you believe that bike is a Slaby GSXR 1100. I was built for comfort not racing I’m afraid.
Good Luck, I love ypur sense of humour and know it will serve you well in the many adventures to come . It looks like this property has had many design decisions made upon it over its history, which somehow never realised their investment.
Take it back to bare bones and primary spaces and let that direct you in your going forward, The previous owners have build in all these hidden pitfalls of failed vision,
Be the ones to make this property truely a gem in its own environment.. Again , Good Luck in your efforts.
Thanks a mil.
K
Beautiful blank canvas with lots of potential...❤it with fabulous surroundings.
This house has good bones. It will become a wonderful forever home. Best wishes for your project.
I’m excited to watch your progress. The home has so much potential. To live in Ireland in the countryside by a lake is my dream. Such a fabulous place.
A dream so wild, it was unthinkable. Still sinking in.
Following because we are doing something similar. Similar but different in that ours is a new build in Northern Ireland but similar as in off-grid. Best of luck, look fwd to progress.
Thanks a mil!
The North of Ireland.
What a beautiful property, I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it in the future. I couldn’t help renovating it in my own mind as you went round, I’d make the main room with the front door the kitchen diner with maybe a sofa, the snug yeah maybe a quiet room & then the room your planning as the master bedroom I’d make in to a grand lounge as it’d be a shame never to see that beautiful stone wall & the double height ceiling. The bedroom with the big chimney breast could maybe be a single bedroom with storage under the bed or relocate the bathroom to this room taking the waste to the front of the property & the septic tank, then making the bathroom a small bedroom & the other bedroom the master. Just my take on it, I’m so looking forward to your journey.
"Couldn't be happier with it." It's yours! All yours. Not quite a blank slate, but nearly so, at least has bones to work with. For whatever it's worth to you, I'm happy for you and your little girl. Good things to come if you work hard and make it yours.
Hats off to you both! Love those triangle windows. Don't blame you for wanting to get out of the rat race and Bournemouth. Ireland is very beautiful!
Good luck with the project. You must be near Kerry somewhere, not far from where we are near killorglin. We also come from Dorset as well!
All of IRL is a stunner, but we feel particularly drawn to the SW.
Yay! 👏 looking forward to seeing what you do, so exciting 😀
We will be retiring in just a few years and I have said I could live in "a dump" if it's structurally sound, offers privacy and NO BARKING DOGS! I like your little place there, all the best from Colorado, USA.
hard to find peace and quiet these days in the countryside , due to wanna be youTube stars buying old county houses then making a never ending racket with renovations, we have a large country house in Sweden with lots of acres, and such wannabe UA-cam stars bought the old house next door and started the never ending hammering and banging, we endure it for 18 months, 7 days a week, morning till evening .. it was constant, drove us mad, so we had to move away.... They just don't care, its all about getting subscribers and balls to the neighbours..
@@TheDarkLandsMusicthey'll have no such issue here.
Tough luck
We bought cottage 5 years ago in the middle of no where we did it all ourselves before they started giving grants out
I will say trade people in Ireland are VERY VERY EXPENSIVE and any rubbish doesn’t matter what it’s is it’s down to you to get rid off it builders they take nothing away
Which part Ireland are you in ?
What’s your budget??? Apart from the €70 k grant and 13 month time frame
We are down in the SW. Budget is kind of moot, as we have no money left after buying the place. So it's pretty much spend it as we earn it. Will be doing a good chunk of work ourselves - nearly everything. Unless of course there is a good reason not to - which certainly wont be lack of willingness or enthusiasm. Thanks for following along
It will be a fine home when you are finished with it. I love the quirky, its a special home. I love the little triangle windows and wood in the house as well as the stonework. So beautiful! Its a real treasure!
This is going to be a great renovation! Hello from Gainesville, Florida!
I have looked at three or four of your videos and you two are the most delightful couple I have seen in a long time. God bless you and your family. You are young and appear to be healthy people which is essential to take on the challenges you have ahead of you. The potential of the property is amazing and I love the cottage, minus some of the colors though out. Can’t wait to see how you achieve your dream homestead. Ann from Va. USA 🇺🇸
Hello Ann, thank you for your kind words and following along!
Nice couple. Fantastic story. Man what a great project with already good bones as they say. Really looking forward to following the journey. Absolute best of luck to you both.
It's a very unique house, in quite good condition actually, but agree those all glass bay windows are a bit quirky.
One of the local visitors suggested it was the work of an eccentric French or British owner at some point in its past. K
@@offgridirishhomestead Not sure if I mentioned this to you, but to keep these old stone houses dry inside it's very important to make the outside grade 15cm lower than the interior finished floors, with a perimeter french drain installed. We have a similar situation/property just north of Galway
I’ve just found your channel looks like it’s going to need a lot of insulation in the roof area and probably other areas, you probably know already but if you re-point the outside of the walls best to do it with lime mortar
Lime lime lime - absolutely! New material for us - having never worked on solid stone buildings before. Thanks for following along
Outstanding.
Enjoy your incredible journey and live the dream ❤️
Tough times don’t last
This is amazing! Love getting to see the home and all you've created here in such a short term!
Charming cottage with lots of character! 🎩💖✨
Well done guys and enjoy every moment.
My wife and I did 2 restorations and finally built our current home and at 65 looking to go again, welcome to ireland
Thanks a mil! You are braver than me, build at 65 wow, good on you. Thanks for following along
in considering raising/lowering floors, etc., my husband says to take into consideration the grade of your property. You don't want your inside floor to be below grade. Good luck!
Thank you!
be great to watch you 2 ,yesss come on start buildin xx
Hi I'm looking forward to watching your house transformation my hubby wakes every morning and the first thing he says is I hate painting 😂 enjoy the journey love from Blue Mountains Australia 🇦🇺 🌻🌻
Thanks for following along
It will be so Lovely to hang out with you and see your home come back to life. Happy Adventure to you! from Flagstaff, Arizona.
I think the house was quite biggish. Why do you have to get ride of the ceiling in the first room? I liked it, very charming
Is backed by rotten chipboard so all needs to comedown. Reinstating is a different story. Thanks for following along
New subscriber. Looking forward to your channel and journey. Beautiful old house. This will be fun! God Bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻 ☦️ 💙
The cottage is beautiful, and for the lights I think there to guide ships in haha 😊
It is the only rational justification :D
You're doing great guys. Greetings from Co. Kerry. Really enjoying watching your clips with my daughter...shout out to your own daughter who's been working hard too raking in the field. Looking forward to the next video! Slán 😊
Thanks a mil - appreciate you following along. 💚
Good luck with the renovation! I’ll be looking forward to updates. Subscribed 👍
Thanks for following along!
You will love those conservatory appendages for starting your vegetable plants.
Yes! Been using them as a little green house
Just came across this and subscribed. You two are delightful. Looks like a lot of work, but it will be fantastic at the end.
😊 Kathy
Hi Kathy, thanks for following along.
Welcome to Ireland. Lovely place. Looking to your renovation journey. You can do it......
What a cool, old building. The best of luck to you.
Cool indeed! The walls are so thick - cool in summer, warm in winter! K
Good luck. Can’t wait to see the results.
It is lovely! We will watch and encourage you on! Hugs from Canada!
Congrats on your new home! As much as I love Southern Europe, Italy, Greece etc... it's becoming more and more hot and arid. A place like Ireland with it's abundant rainfall and mild climate will be even more important in the coming years compared to the south
Temperate climates certainly have some advantages. That's coming from a sun loving lizard like me (K).
It's easy to see why you fell in love with the cottage. The countryside is gorgeous. You've got my undivided attention in seeing what you will do with the cottage and property. Watching the video I swear I could smell fresh air. Best regards!
Plenty of fresh air here, unless the farmers are spreading on that particular day! Thanks for following along. K
Welcome to Ireland, looks like a great project, well done!!!
Thanks a mil!
Me. I just subscribed 😅. I love such adventures. Looking forward to seeing more of them.
Me too 🥰
I just found your channel. I love love love this cottage. It will be stunning after you remodel/ restore. If I was younger I would have bought this immediately. The only thing that I think cheapens the home are those conservatories.
The appendages are definitely an acquired taste. Thanks for following along.
Hi guys, just came across your channel and have subscribed, as I want to come along for the ride, the whole house seems to have verh good 'bones' and also it appears to be in good shape, just remember the three 'R's' of renovation, Rest, Rext and more Rest, just don't over work yourselves, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
Hi Les, I like your style. I will keep you in mind when the wife is trying to crack the whip. Thanks for following along
K
Hello I’m Ava’s friend and I saw you in supervalu
You both have a great sense of humor.
What's cool about houses like this is you can just add-on a room when you want to. Go to stories the way you can see the water 🇺🇸🍻
I'm glad I found your channel, this is going to be a great adventure. I'm excited to see how your new home will take shape. I think it's beautiful.
