    Come and see inside our abandoned 1880s old stone cottage in Ireland. We bought this uninhabitable farmhouse in the Irish countryside and used our life savings to make this move and change our way of life. But was it worth it? Come see what your life savings will buy you!

    when the only heat in your house was the fireplace, you made it your wall. when the stone got warmed from the fire, it spread through the wall, hence more heat.

      Absolutely! Makes total sense. The same principle with modern underfloor heating too - the entire concrete slab is the thermal mass equivalent to the big stone built fireplace wall.

    I suppose the gammy lights can be changed for something far nice. At least they’re wired. That stone wall inside is lovely. Getting rid of the yellow and pink paint will do so much for making the stone work pop. They really did get the place back to front 😅

    Greetings from Canada. Boy that place has potential in spades! I love the glass bump outs and the stone and vaulted ceilings! Oh my. The developer put a lot of money into the glass and windows! I hope you keep the ceilings. Just paint them or sand them and whitewash them. Can’t way to see where you take it. Good luck.

    Your ceilings can be absolutely stunning. Here in Norway paneled ceilings are normal. Both in older and newer houses. I have it too. However they are painted and that make a huuuuuge difference. Dont tear them down. Do a search instead. That should save you a lot of money and a lot of time.

      hard to find peace and quiet these days in the countryside , due to wanna be youTube stars buying old county houses then making a never ending racket with renovations, we have a large country house in Sweden with lots of acres, and such wannabe UA-cam stars bought the old house next door and started the never ending hammering and banging, we endure it for 18 months, 7 days a week, morning till evening .. it was constant, drove us mad, so we had to move away.... They just don't care, its all about getting subscribers and balls to the neighbours..

    You have a different definition of "uninhabitable" than some of us. You have a roof over your head, protection from rain and wind, and can make do with temporary measures for cooking, bathing, and the loo. It looks habitable to me in the short term.

    • @offgridirishhomestead
      @offgridirishhomestead  2 місяці тому +1

      We are happy to make do - in fact it's exactly what we plan to do. As soon as the heating is installed we are in!
      A property needs heating, facilities to cook, go to the toilet and wash yourself to be considered habitable by law.
      We were not living in it to begin with as it is one of the requirements of the grant.

    You are very fortunate that the construction company you bought it from had done some major work like taking down walls on the ground floor, and gutting the kitchen, bathroom and so on. Here in Northern Italy, there are many houses with the pine ceilings, walls and doors. As long as there is no mold behind them you'll be fine. You can do spot checks behind the pine walls and look from the attic onto the roof side of the pine ceilings. You can easily sand the wood and paint them white. It makes the space feel much larger, and you will preserve the protection from the damp keeping them in place. Thus, you don't have to redo the plaster inside the house as often after heavy rains. For more than a decade I lived in an ancient stone house in a borgo in northern Italy, and trust me when I say that your number one problem with a stone house will always be damp coming in from the outside. Wishing you both the best of luck. It's a very special property.

      we bought a bit of a doer upper in western Norway, same situation almost with wood panelled ceilings which have darkened with age..painted with what they call 'sperregrunn' fırst to stop colour and knots showing through the paint...some sort of sealant I guess, then went with 'cotton white', not as stark as simple white (it's what the Swedish ppl use) a bit softer and warmer feel, just bounces any light around nicely..works a treat...bit of a job ref the painting with grooves etc but well worth it...

      We lived in Kerry as well just outside of Cahersiveen. Couldn’t bear the winters in the end as the storms, wind and rain would go on for months. We loved living there but glad we’re in Spain now where winter is about 3 days rather than 6 months. I love being outside and we didn’t use our garden at all really as the midges and rain kept us inside sadly. On a sunny day, Ireland is the most beautiful country in the world.

    I've seen people "float" the bed in the center of the room, with a wardrobe butted up to it to form a headboard/wall/divider. The wardrobe was heavy enough so it wouldn't slide, and they finished off the back of it as a decorative headboard. It also created a dressing area behind the bed. Just a thought💕(or alternatively create an office space❤)

    Look up how to use the saw correct. The piece you saw off has to have the ability to fall away. If you put the plank on two points and cut in the middle, the saw blade will always be squeezed and kick back! Ask a cabinetmaker or carpenter please, before you hurt yourself or someone else.

    • @offgridirishhomestead
      @offgridirishhomestead  3 місяці тому

      You are absolutely correct and thank you for pointing out my folly. Unfortunately at the moment I don't have the luxury of a workbench or any saw horses. I am poverty mode, working on the floor most of the time. The saw is pretty low HP, and will bog and bind up the blade before causing any kickback.

      150k would get you something with a bunch of potential. It is likely to be a big project though so long as you are prepared for a doer-upper! The vacant homes grant has definitely inflated the price tag of a lot of these types of properties and in our travels we struggled to find something with over 1ac - it seems to always be split off and sold separately - but they do crop up.
      We are doing a video on our costings in the not too distant, so watch this space.

    I will say trade people in Ireland are VERY VERY EXPENSIVE and any rubbish doesn’t matter what it’s is it’s down to you to get rid off it builders they take nothing away
    Which part Ireland are you in ?
    What’s your budget??? Apart from the €70 k grant and 13 month time frame

    • @offgridirishhomestead
      @offgridirishhomestead  2 місяці тому

      We are down in the SW. Budget is kind of moot, as we have no money left after buying the place. So it's pretty much spend it as we earn it. Will be doing a good chunk of work ourselves - nearly everything. Unless of course there is a good reason not to - which certainly wont be lack of willingness or enthusiasm. Thanks for following along

    Hi, I have taken the time to see the above video of your house, and your viewpoints. Unless you have 150k eu to spend I would ask you to to review the following comments, bearing in mind that an awful lot of work has already been done so far, tou have a big potential for loss, and it has already been structurally assessed I would expect from builder ,so you are seriously lucky.
    1- Roof fibre slate- these tiles are in excellent condition, maybe new from1980, and unless you will insulate the roof externally I would absolutely leave for the long term. It looks as if they have been re-layed after the rafters have been replaced, if not new. Rafters look like a botch job, but I would look at the rafter plates to see if that is the problem, shims if needed,- low cost. I would also look at cross bracing if really wrong. I would like to know if there is a membrane or felt under the slates there, and I suspect there is from 1980- solution in 4 down. The bowing roof should be structurally settled with no issue if wall plates underneath, put in two sets of cement/steel rafter plates, rafters , easily done if you want.
    2-How could these roofs be insulated, or are they?
    3-The external stone is joint rendered with cement instead of lime, which lets the wall breathe, you could spend summer eves replacing with lime, some time, using a used silicone empty tube gun.
    4- Light- ok, ceilings are low, dark stain, but for a 5% light increase replacement I would leave it and use advice from a lighting expert- mood lights etc. However, long velux windows S facing? would rapidly improve this for low cost upstairs, and you would see what the roof insulation is like, and could you slip in Al foil by taking off the side cappings and pull through rolls of foil with rope- like electrical chasing.
    I would invest in insulating the patio windows with ins curtains, shutters or other, for night heat loss, see after year, buy a cheap thermal unit to see around house for heat loss.
    5-Wall insulation I suspect is your main priority after electrical. As the walls are stone it needs to breathe, so the insulation has to breathable- I would use the advice of a heating consultant- a civil engineer, not a gobdaw, as to what would be the best and fastest solution, along with querying IR house heating. You need to start on this after agreed plan.
    6- Chimney main room comment flue- your flue is a 6" flue- source a 15cm or less flue liner, common, end of. Put in a 5 1/2" stick sideways up 3 ft. There was a 4" flue, but rare.
    7- Dig a 4 ft deep trench around the back of the house and side this autumn, line with a 20 ton lorry load of chips to minimise dampness. Job no 3 in importance after wall ins, elec. Buy an Irish shovel, horse barrow. Local digger will do it easy, find area for subsoil near- build a mound garden feature of it.etc
    8- Sand and repaint facia boards before sept,ladder, get extra wide gutters, clean 3 times Sept to March, trees,copper gutter would look great, this is important. Job no 5. Check where outflow goes 10m from house.
    9- Ok up to this point you may be insulted, however for the next task you need a draw bar and a hammer, ear plugs, and a bag of luck, do you feel lucky? ready? The upstairs chimney brest is a dummy, similar to a four flue/ fireplace junction point. Should be made of timber, maybe cement plastered to fool people.. Inside will either be a corpse- check for missing local persons 1975, a shload of drugs from the sea, or disposable assets.Stay quiet, do not scream. It may be a water tank but that would be mad.
    10- Do not buy roof elec panels due to dust inefficiency and poor actual return/time. Instead you could have a wind generator, battery source, some time. It is wiser to spend costs finding out year 1 what does not need to be replaced.
    11-Plumbing- a modern septic tank would be worth while long term, shower/sink 4" Wavin piping can be run along parallel to rafters to side of house,2 floorboards off, take out cross braces then underground to main pipe, some will be separate, joining externally.Rebrace. Kitchen joining same, even if cut floor to go out back, easy. If necessary a 3 litre tank would be under sink/rafter as a slow release/narrow pipe from sinks.
    12- Well drilling co's are reputable with good advice for well location etc, invest in UV system, double filtration tubes, check water sample local council, not hard water or e. coli expected from where you are- Is cattle slurry put out on field above you? do not ask, see high deep green grass growth.
    12- There may be cold bridges around triangular windows, leave it and see over winter, also use spare door, do not buy another, price double for one door, you may replace some windows due to fogging at a later stage anyway, triple glazing long term necessary for main windows, glass house/ cold frames used for plants with exist windows. Use bleach to eliminate black mould.You could put up triang foil every night for loss if fog.
    That is it as far as I can go, but this will minimise your potential loss and get best return for your investment, time. After electrical downstairs and insl walls and water,( you can do uptairs slowly) you should aim to be able to cook goose 25 Dec, if not try swan. No need to thank, you seem nice people.

    I’ve just found your channel looks like it’s going to need a lot of insulation in the roof area and probably other areas, you probably know already but if you re-point the outside of the walls best to do it with lime mortar

    Great new channel! Any way to save the square ceiling? Paint? It's beautiful wood, upstairs too, hope you plan to save it for up cycling later on, cupboards, dresser, storage boxes, and ?¿? Lining the appendages lower walls? 😅 Thanks for taking us along ❣️❣️❣️

      Some good ideas there. The ceiling has to come down, as there is a bunch of warped chipboard backing it. The panelling is all pine (albeit very thin) - it won't go to waste. Will be up-cycled for some project somewhere :) Thanks for following along

    are you going to bring back the original fire place, take down the wall blocking it? I think it would probably look better too, especially if they haven't destroyed it but left it intact...
    am loving this new section & am very keen to see which way you go; putting new bathrooms in old houses is always a challenge, they always look like an after thought in most (mine is tacked on the back of the house with the laundry) wow over the front door is a nightmare disaster waiting to happen, do you need a bathroom upstairs?
    can't wait til the next one comes out
    thanx for sharing your cottage dream with us

    • @offgridirishhomestead
      @offgridirishhomestead  3 місяці тому +1

      I would love to take down the wall blocking it. Alas it seems someone has done a proper job blocking it up. It would also render our bedroom fireplace not usable if re-instated. So, lots of hurdles to doing so, not sure which way is right at the minute.
      Bathroom upstairs is still undecided too. Biggest problem will be it needing a big ugly waste pipe ruining the beautiful stone walls.

    I LOVE those windows that go outside a wee bit from the house. Sadly, they would have been better in wood... You may in time be able to have some stone made around the (new) windows on the outside. They do look odd being white metal, against the old stone walls. There could be someone out there to take it on. I would not give up...That always upsets me to see people put in the modern white metal windows and alongside something made of stone. In fact, me thinks they may have been knocked back if they had of said to your local council. Here in Australia, we have many old stone buildings going back 200 years. If the council finds a modern window, they tell you to remove it and use only wood. On another note, you can get someone in to 'sandblast' all the varnish off the ceilings and staircase & doors. Bringing the whole cottage to a lovely raw wood...Then you can do what you like with it once it has been cleaned down. That is one way to get it done very very quickly! It is so fast, and a great way to save weeks of work. Worth the price if you are time-poor. I have done many reno's in the last 45 years. Few things I wish I had known. Try to buy an inexpensive vacuum cleaner, that has bags. Sweeping can cause you issues with health, even after 1 reno!.. I found it is best to clean as much dirt up from each day's work...We have gone through 2 vacuum cleaners. It was well worth the effort and under $100 .Once you start to paint walls make sure they are VERY clean of any dust, from top to bottom. Never ever buy cheap rollers to paint with, you will be wasting time and they are total rubbish. Wishing you guys a great time for your lovely cottage. You're living the dream. :) P.S. Have a look on YT to see sandblasting if you haven't.

    • @offgridirishhomestead
      @offgridirishhomestead  2 місяці тому +1

      You are spot on, they would have been better in wood. Still deciding what to do with them, but remodelling them with Oak is top of the list at the moment. Also - again spot on re: vacuum cleaner. I have one which has survived two property renovations and it's definitely one of the most useful tools in the kit.
      Funny you should mention the sandblasting, been considering it for prepping up prior to paint.
