The daughter was the little girl who died in the woods screaming cuz she got her leg trapped from the story that Mama told the boys at the table. I think the hiker was her dad still going to the camping area hoping she would pop up or something every year like a missing child.
@@CinemaMikey so when people lose children they typically try to remember those children by doing the same activity. So the daughter died possibly a year or two before that and he was hiking on that anniversary. The father was real. That's why they show you the picture of the girl in the wallet.
That’s deep. What’s your take on the evil? Is it real? I’ve read interviews from the director, and he is actually leaning to more psychological than supernatural.
I think in the real world Berry was probably abused by her husband and killed him. She went on the run and returned back to the house in the forest. Her fear of the outside world is her thinking she would get caught by the police. When her parents found out what she did, she killed them as well. She was probably talked down to as a kid, made to think she had evil in her and then started to actually believe she was the evil after her husbands death. The moms lying to her children is evil within itself. Keeping knowledge away from her children, like the camera, is evidence of evil. Her willingness to kill the dog was also more evidence. She was simply looking for any excuse throughout the movie to kill her own children. Sams photo is a manifestation of what he wanted to see and his desire to please his mother. Sams desire to be like his mom is evidence of the “evil” being her. Him burning the house down is just him doing what he thinks his mother wouldve done if she was untethered to the house and “let go”
This is my take on this movie- the grandma had serious mental issues, she was afraid to go outside, which is why grandpa builds her a "special" house, the grandma then passes the trauma and hereditary sickness down the line, eventually the mom at some point of her life had a rebelious life, she wanted to break down from the trauma but a tragic event, resulting in a dead girl in the woods (the one we see at the start) breaks down into full blown mental ilness, then the mom dumps her old life and runing away into the woods where she believes she can protect her boys from the "evil" problem is the evil is actually her sickness, which is represented by a snake. By making her sons believe there is some unnatural evil in the woods, keeping them away from the world, starving them, she is actually causing them abuse, planting in and passing down trauma unto them. Sam is much more suseptible and accepting of what she says while Nolan is more rebelious and curious and dares to question her. Eventually she is so far gone in her sickness she ends up self exiting , while Nolan wanted to show her that the evil is not real her hallucinations made her self exit believing she is protecting them. Now both boys are extremely traumatized, Sam is starting to get more angry and upset at his brother. When the hiker showed up he was actually real and Sam did kill him. Nolan tried to convince Sam that the hiker was real because he touched him while being bound by the rope Sam refuses to believe but at night ends up sneaking down and eating the food and goong throught the hikers stuff, finding the picture he is deeply affected by it begining to realize he actually killed a real person and now his daugther left all alone because of him. He goes out at night and begins hallucinating their mother in the cabin only to realize again she is dead, and right after he hallucinates the girl from the picture, he really wants to believe she is real and ends up running away at night, he finaly was brave enough to challange his beliefs system unfortunatly this ended up being a really bad mental break down and he ends up hallucinating in the woods and even has a seizure, he breaks into a rage and wants to kill his little brother (this is supported by the fact that nothing supernatural was able to harm Nolan in at any point, not even when he jumped into the pit at their house embracing the "evil monster) the only thing that was able to harm Nolan was his brother. While all that is happening Nolan has his own realisation, he realisez his brother is unwell and sick, and his mind is fighthing whats real and what is not, when he traps the "evil" mom in that pit he embraces her telling her he loves her, he thinks about all the good stuff and he is able the cope with the realization that his mom was actually consumed by the snake (sickness) and he allowes himself to love her despite what she really was and the snake evaporates and Nolan is able to forgive and let go. When both of the boys are on the helicopter Nolan is optimistic and sees the reality, that they are saved. On the other hand we see the picture that sam took, with the snake hand on him, symbolizing to us that the sickness of their mom has a grip on him, he ends up comforting himself by saying that mom loved him more because in his mind after that mental break down and halucinations he believes all she said was true, and he was the better son, the one that listend to her, he was not able to let go thus in fact making all of what his mother said become true, that the evil is real and if the evil (the sickness) gets into their house it will make them kill each other.
I wanted to add that i think this is a really intefesting movie and we have some bits and glimpsess into the mothers previous life, what she says and tells the boys indicate that the world didn't really end, and probably at some point in her life she tried to get away from this "curse" of the mental ilness that is passed down by genes, added woth the trauma and lack of treatment resulting in her completely detaching from humanity and all reality, living in an old rotting house and being ready to starve herself and the boys to death, all except actually dealing with her sickness and treating her. And i think deep down she knew what she was doing, thats why she hallucinated the husband saying that she didn't tell the truth to the boys. When she catches the boys talking behind her back about running away without the rope next morning she brings out the camera and manipulates them again with stories and lies.
@@Alicenwndrlnd Wow, this post is really detailed; you clearly put a lot of effort into it! I also noticed something interesting: why wasn’t Sam surprised when he saw the picture at the end? He spent the entire time being terrified of the monster, yet at the end, he just looked at it as if it were no big deal.
@@CinemaMikey I think it all boils down to the way the movie is trying to get us to experience how to the characters of the movie its actually all real, even although its only in their heads. this is also why the movie makes us questions constantly if it the evil is real or not - what we learn at the end is that the evil IS real but just not in the way that the characters perceive it to be- as some supernatural thing. to me it seems that Sam was not surprised by the photograph and the hand in it because he already "gave up" on believing something else and this "evil" became his reality , and he will most likely grow up and repeat their mothers actions and way of seeing the world because he will continue to believe that it is as real as the photo was for him.
No one is mention that little girl at the end running around the trees to get his rope tangled. Was this the same girl that the mother could see in the woods years ago. Therefore, the kids and the mother could see the same little girl
If I was being chased by someone tied to a rope I'd do exactly what she did - but I'm also not a pre-teen girl so she's either extremely intelligent or the monster. I keep flipping back and fourth on whether she was real. She's either real and Sam hallucinated the many hands thing after exerting too much energy and being starved, she's a monster, or was real and got away in part of the first point. For one thing after the hiker was shot, he yelled for help, but I also thought he was yelling a woman's name. However, I wouldn't think he'd leave her by herself. I do not think she's the same girl, only a similar looking girl. You gotta remember that when people hallucinate they can draw on what they've heard - Berry mentioned how "It takes the form of my mother" "It came to me as a snake" "It sheds it's skin like a snake" "It pretended to be a little girl" The boys have all of these images in their head and I think whether she's real or not thematically it's no coicidence that it was a little girl who tested Sam's faith - just like his mom. I honestly think the monster was fake, but the two things that stop me from shutting the case is the picture at the end and how Sam cut Noland's rope while also being by the car. Sam could definitely be tripping balls, but Noland should've been alright. The director said that the final photo could just be symbolism, but I think that's poor writing. I bet 90% of people who saw the photo take it as literal.
The hiker said he came because he heard someone call for help. So I guess he asked his daughter to wait. One of the boys said he also touched him with the rope. Which goes against what their mother said wasn't possible. Also, if it's mental illness, it's also genetic and usually doesn't kick in until a traumatic experience or puberty. So both the kids could very much be hallucinating things, including the brother being in multiple places.

It depends on what you see, if you believed that they have mental disorder, then both kids got. They will take it with them until they grow old, and be like Momma. If you think about the evil route, then the evil is accompanying Sam all the way to his new life.
To me this movie was way too similar to the Bill Paxton movie "Frailty". It too was about a father who had delusions of evil demons inside of people. And he had his two sons help him in kidnapping and murdering those he saw the demons inside. And one of the sons was a believer and the other was not.

I don't English very well.but this film is very esay to understand.i will explain it as i can "Jun and her family had initially lived in the city. Later, she fell in love with a man who was actually a demon in human form. Her husband had kept his true identity a secret, even from their children. When Jun's mother discovered the truth about her son-in-law, she tried to warn Jun, but she refused to believe her. The mother moved to a secluded place and built a home there, hoping to distance herself from the demonic influence. Despite her mother's warnings, Jun continued to live with her demon husband. Years passed, and Jun and her husband had two children who exhibited supernatural abilities. When Jun finally realized the truth about her husband, she became paranoid, believing that everyone in the world was possessed by demons. This paranoia stemmed from her own experiences and her disbelief in her mother's warnings. Her husband, the demon, eventually revealed his true nature and harmed Jun and her mother. It was then that Jun fully understood the extent of her husband's deception. The children, being half-demon, also displayed supernatural powers, such as Samuel's ability to eat frogs like a snake and Nolan's unusual heat tolerance."
@@-xxx5349 Oh I see. Nice story telling there. But I did not feel that the husband was evil because it was not shown. Or did I miss that? I can’t remember.😅
ll three characters went through the tale of the evil that have been told to them and the bad they did manifested through the story as the evil but only Nolan was able to "let go" and free himself and his brother. Hence the title of the movie "Never let go" when in reality they need to let go! A bit of a stretch but the mom grew up in the house and most likely her parents were sick in the mind and tormented her as a kid both physically and mentally through the tales she has been told about the outside world being evil and to stay home (a place for safety for us not stuck in this world, but in her world is not safe but pretends that its safe in form of a trauma). We were never told about her husband but most likely he tried to free there kids but she was too far gone with the tale and trauma and she killed her husband (like what Sam was trying to do with Nolan and setting the house on fire but in opposite views). She was trying to protect her kids not knowing her husband was actually the one he wanted to save them. While Sam was to far gone with the tale and he might have though he has manifested the evil and he started to act like the evil to kill his own brother. The rope signifies the chain that is still holding on to her with the trauma and she thinks its keeping herself and her kids safe. You can see Nolan trying to pull and break the rope at times but his Momma and Sam always tried to stop him from doing it. Momma tried to escape the torment by taking the lives of her parents and most likely her husband as well because she was tormented by the guilt and she "never let go" of the fear and guilt. Nolan found out nothing Momma has been telling is real even when he saw Momma take her own life , he was scared but the guilt tried to consumed him and it was manifested as her being the evil and a snake being (due to her tattoo) in the final scene but he "Let her Go" because he loved her and he loves his brother. So in other words he Let go the stupid tale that the Evil is real. Sam was too far gone with the tale and when he killed the father (who was real), his guilty came out the moment his tale came true in his mind. He has always followed what Momma has told him so he believed it all and did not realize what he was doing to his brother was actually evil. He also "Never let go" plus if he is evil the moment he touched the people who rescued them both then they would have been evil as well, but they aren't in the final scene In the end only Nolan was able to "Let Go" the opposite of what was required to do and not only saved himself but probably his own brother as well. Its all a stretch but there was no evil in the sense of supernatural only what a tale and how a believe in fear can alter a behavior that ultimately lead to a bad outcome. Only if you let go the fear will you be able to be free.
Dang, I enjoyed reading your post. I was also thinking that maybe Momma ventured into the city, where she met her husband, which would explain the photograph. Additionally, it seems likely that she might have gotten her tattoo while experiencing life outside her usual environment. However, as time goes on, the husband starts to notice that something isn’t quite right with Momma, hinting at deeper issues that may be at play.
Spoiler: there is no monster. In a behind the scenes video there was an interview with Halle Berry and she said that she liked the "generational trauma".
Mama wasn’t killed by the evil in the shed but you corrected that later. The only piece that really bothers me about this movie is that clearly, it wasn’t the end of the world. I wonder why she lied about there being other people? To deter them from leaving? I believe that Mama had schizophrenia. I believe her Mama had it and I believe that Sam had it. It has a very strong hereditary familial rate. I think that is what the hand in the photo meant. It meant that now Sam has it too. But I just cannot explain away why the other brother wrestled with the creature if he does t have mental Illness. I think if they had left that out, then it my take would have been more rock solid. Because if you think about it, up until that point he hadn’t seen anything. The rope, the prayer, the killing of family members can all be explained by delusions which tend to not make sense. Other than the mental illness kept them trapped there. I admire that Mama even as sick as she was could not bring herself to harm her children. I’d also like to know what she meant by “I brought it here.” This movie has been on my mind since I saw it and that has to be a win for the director.
True, you really will go down the rabbit hole when you try to answer all the questions. I actually wanted to add more, but I was already tired and thinking nobody would watch it anyway. Lol. Yeah, the Schezprnia route would be hard to explain, especially since Nolan was able to see the evil. Maybe he has it too? Was it Nolan who misheard Sam saying 'Momma loved him more' even if he didn’t say it? Maybe that’s the clue. Since the rope is tied to the house and they believe it is sacred because of the rituals, Momma might have believed it would save them. I’m struggling with the snake tattoo, was it just a ploy to tricked viewers?
@@Nursemagic1 people also forget about grief Noah seeing the evil in his own way as his mother because he was going through the grief of feeling responsible for her death. Couple of the grief of that with the lack of food and the sickness and taking care of his brother it's a lot for a kid to mentally deal with. You compound it with the stories their mother told them and you get an imagination that creates that.
What about the guy that appears to be the father of the two boys? You didn’t mention him. I was expecting him to appear after the mother disappeared but it never happened.

Ohh dang, haven’t watch that movie but heard of it. That sounds so interesting.

Yea, some people don’t like it.
I'm so happy that I found your channel!! I agree with everything you said within the first 2 minutes, about going in with low expectations and having the questions etc. I appreciate your viewpoint, this was a much better movie than I expected.
Thank you. 😀People are hating it, but it’s an ok movie for me.
@@CinemaMikey I tried to go in blind but I ended up watching about half the trailer. It definitely messed with my mind. I spent half the time thinking it was definitely supernatural and then several amounts of time thinking it was just all mental illness. My conclusion is that it was both.
Agreed about the hand proving the evil was real the hole time. My question is will the evil follow them to the new town?
That’s tricky since the evil is within close proximity and it was not attached to anyone. I want it to follow them though.

I don't English very well.but this film is very esay to understand.i will explain it as i can
"Jun and her family had initially lived in the city.
Who is Jun, the grandpa?

@@-xxx5349 Oh I see. Nice story telling there. But I did not feel that the husband was evil because it was not shown. Or did I miss that? I can’t remember.😅
@CinemaMikey Yes you missed it. Her husband is shown in one part of the movie. He asks if you told the truth to the children.
Having a lot of questions while watching a movie is a really poor metric of how affective it is.
I think when Alexander Aja was thinking the movie to be confusing, and I got confused, maybe he delivered. But it’s just me. ;)
ll three characters went through the tale of the evil that have been told to them and the bad they did manifested through the story as the evil but only Nolan was able to "let go" and free himself and his brother.
He also "Never let go" plus if he is evil the moment he touched the people who rescued them both then they would have been evil as well, but they aren't in the final scene
In the end only Nolan was able to "Let Go" the opposite of what was required to do and not only saved himself but probably his own brother as well.
@@ccatarinajm7114 ohhhh generational trauma is a good explanation.🤔
The evil doesn’t kill Mama, Mama kills herself so the evil doesn’t get her first
Mama wasn’t killed by the evil in the shed but you corrected that later.
@CinemaMikey the lil kid Said evil don't care about animals the rescue squad didn't take the dog mother was right
What about the guy that appears to be the father of the two boys? You didn’t mention him. I was expecting him to appear after the mother disappeared but it never happened.
I think Halle Berry murdered him, just as she did her mother, whom she poisoned.
The kid said evil doesn't care about animals the rescue squad took them left the dog enough said only clue i find out
Movie that give no sign of a clear explanation are lazy or looking for a sequel to explain what they should have already. Movie was fine, could have good, maybe even great. The box likely had all the answers.
