to be fair, there was at least 10-15 years of translated manga that came out here in the US before the Dragon Ball manga was translated in 1998 (in comic book format with two concurrent series, og Dragon Ball and DBZ). We will all miss Toriyama, but let's not erase history. The fact is, until the late 1990s, official anime and manga distributors all but ignored Toriyama's work outside of the Ocean dub of the original Dragon Ball from 1995; the release of Dragon Ball Z on Toonami (along with Pokemon and a handful of other anime on the various channels) was the beginning of a new epoch in the fandom (the third by my count: 1970-1980s, with underground fan-subs and Robotech and toyetic series like Transformers on TV; and the late 1980s-1998 VHS and flopped manga in comic format), one that veered towards shonen (and even shojo) series rather than the seinen series that dominated the early to mid 1990s (though there were some shonen series that were hits, such as Ranma 1/2).

Calling Mr Popo’s design racist then getting told he’s based on a Hindu god has to be one of the most beautiful Ratio’s I’ve ever seen.
Fax, but y'know it's Twitter they'll start an argument about anything imaginable.
R.I.P Toryiama, you were the true GOAT.
Two things can be true at once. If you’re gonna look at Mr Popo and say there’s no way his design can be interpreted as racist, you’re being willfully ignorant. Toriyama can still be a legend who revolutionized manga, and a man who made an oversight on how certain audiences would perceive a certain design considering I doubt he expected to receive an international audience
@@AngelRuiz-xq2ie Well… if you decide that a character having jet black skin and thick lips can be perceived as racist, that’s kinda just adding fuel to the fire.
What you said can and will be used by people to justify needless hate for toriyamas work. It’s all good and well if it’s just some dark or offensive humour, but there’s no need to be so serious. Realistically speaking, having dark skin and thick lips is far from racist when looking through a certain lense.
Plus, aside from those physical qualities, there’s nothing else that’s problematic with Mr Popo’s design. His design is based in Hinduism; he has Hindu/Indian attire. Nothing serious or offensive about that.
And besides, I wasn’t outright denying that it can be perceived as racist, I was just pointing out how beautiful that ratio was. If you wanna talk designs that can be perceived racist outright regardless of intent, look at OPM or One Piece.
And don’t go around calling people ignorant my friend. You’ll just pull yourself into an argument with someone who’s far to happy to take that too seriously. Only do so if very much evident and necessary.
@@pokerus1359I mean he was pretty polite with his response and speaks the truth. Toriyama is god to me, and DB is my favorite series of all time in any medium for over 25 years, but he’s definitely right. Just look up black/african minstrels and try to tell me that wasn’t part of Popo’s inspiration. This was many years ago however, and Toriyama had clearly learned more tasteful designs for black characters since then. Using this as a way to smear his name on the day of his death is also extremely low.
@@AngelRuiz-xq2ie Mr Popo is vibe check, if you see racism. You failed that vibe check.
There is only one truth, just many perceptions of it. Those who admit to seeing a race issue where there is none, only serve to minimalize actual race issues. Also making a series in 1984 for an audience 40 whole years in the future, is about the most empty-headed thing I've read today. Toriyama couldn't tell the future, that's a impossible standard.

How dare they insult the father of anime
RIP AKIRA TORIYAMA

@josueveguilla9069 not all of these mostly father of Shonen rest in peace Akira goatyama and the grandfather of manga Osamu tezuka
He's the father of Shonen
that is not the father of anime the father of anime is Osamu Tezuka though toriyama sensei is the co father of shounen with buronsons and tetsuo hara

Alot of grifters coming out of the woodworks to insult a man after his death all for a crumb of clout is just sad

Literally the same people that get heated about anything anime and manga that doesn't fit in their "correct" Western values... Like lolis
So heated that they'll try to get people fired for one "sir" slip-up.

I'm gonna be real honest. I don't really enjoy DBZ as an adult but it became a significant part of my childhood. Hearing Mr. Toriyama's passing still make me a little bit teary-eyed. The nostalgia it brings when I hear the OG openings of the anime. RIP Akira Toriyama-sensei. Thank you for giving me a memorable childhood.
What’s crazy is I enjoy it more now at 35 than I did when I was in middle school watching it on toonami. I’m rewatching all the classic episodes on blu ray it’s def pretty fun.
@@halensabbath3043DBZ put Toonami on the map, and thanks to that, we got to see a lot of good anime we probably wouldn't have seen. Toonami was part of my childhood and I didn't know until recently that DBZ is the reason it lasted as long as it did.
I've got a lot to thank Akira for.
Exactly how I feel. I don't like DBZ anymore, but Toriyama inspired other animes throughout the years and his artwork with Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger really put turn-based RPGs to what they are today.
I didn't even watch DB but I cried at the news

John Reuben summed up these Twits eloquently:

Mocking a deceased person is like asking for a fight. Especially if this person is someone very important to many people.
What kind of narcissist do you have to be to insult a man who brought so many people joy?
Even worse, insulting a dead man who can't even defend themselves. No backbone whatsoever to even insult him while he was still alive. No, they needed to wait when he's dead so that the man himself won't have a say in it. Spineless cowards
And right after his death too
@@edwinrivera2046 people critizing him where already doing it BEFORE he dies, he's death is irrelevant to this. Also insult him? can't you read? except for the racim witch is stupid it's his work and what he offered that's critiqued not the man, theres nothing narciscim about it.
You gotta be a man who just hates himself, that's all.

RIP Toriyama Sensei. Your works have inspired many to go further beyond, and will always hold a special place in our hearts and souls.
I deleted mine the year before last AND Facebook last yr. I was sick of the bullying.
Gone are the days when ones honor was defended by every type of strength. The farther you go back in history, the less crime there was, the less disrespect, and the more speech was rendered honorably.
