As funny is this is, I can't watch it without feeling bad about some old guy trying to make a homework hotline to help kids but just kept getting trolled :(

yeah man, a few of my old elementary school teachers were sort of like that. They'd make this awesome learning material, hand-drawn and everything, only to have the class barely pay any attention to it and just screw around. Teachers get paid crap compared to what they put up with.

It’s the deadpan crap acting that makes this funnier than it actually is. That and Charles holding back his laughter while that puppet rubbed him out.
This skit could go south really quick.... and, it did.

And IMO that's EXACTLY why it worked so well in the context of a call in show. Very old school Howard Stern style call in pranks. LOVED IT!
This and the cockroach sketch are a toss up for sketch of the night for me.
If you hired a dude to do a public channel homework show, you would get exactly that level of acting talent.
So, really, he nailed it!
I think too much acting polish would have ruined this skit. Barkley really did seem like the kind of person you'd encounter on cable access. Heck, he might have still been too good!
This was a perfect match. The writers really played to his strengths.

Why does everyone hate on Barkley? He's hosted 4 times now and has had a few good skits in every show he's hosted, dating back to 1993. He's NOT an actor, never was. Maybe it's just me but I appreciate the comedy in one of the greatest NBA players in history attempting to act and be funny. Jordan tried it and it was HORRIBLE lol. Barkley is great, just enjoy it for what it is people. I for one appreciated a show where not every skit had a political agenda behind it and it was just goofy comedy. I guess I'm getting old lol

Charles Barkley was one of the best hosts. I honestly can’t imagine how he did not break in some of these
I suspect it's because he's not skilled or experienced at acting so he's focusing on trying to deliver his lines as best he can. He's too focused on doing a good job to break, and that's something to be proud of for a non-actor.
So despite being an unskilled and inexperienced actor, he's giving it his all and trying not to let anyone down. For that I have the utmost respect and believe that if he ever wanted to, he could be a great actor with training.
And thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
