No. Your parents WERE DEFINITELY BAD PEOPLE. You were a child and they called you a failure for "only" being Valedictorian... imagine the narcissism that took. 🤬

First story, your parents WERE bad people. What they did to you and your sister was emotionally abusive. I seriously hope you see this one day and go NC with them

Absolutely, anyone who abuses a power dynamic is a bad person. Culture is supposed to be enlightening, not a weapon. End of.

The reverse culture shock (coming back to America). After being in Eastern Europe for a while, I got used to small shops, hardly any overt advertising, easy to walk everywhere or easy transport, almost always home cooked food, no major chain stores, lack of skyscrapers. Not hearing any English for a while. A lot of emotions contacting family lost behind the Iron Curtain. I had seriously thought about not returning. I was depressed for about 2 weeks after returning. America seemed so overwhelming for a while. It worked out OK because I met my soon to be husband shortly after returning.

I've been in Japan the past 8 years and I'm also worried about the reverse culture shock I'll probably feel if/when I move back to the US. 😅

@@emilieloveskiwiI lived in Japan for 6 years and when I came back to my own country everything seemed so different that I couldn't fit anymore with the culture there.
Also I remember after living in Japan for so long and always eating in restaurants and everything when I came back to my country the very first day my mom made me my favorite dish and I almost cried because that was the first time I hate homemade food in years.

I'm black and grew up in africa but I can really relate to the first story. My father was a model student who went to study in belgium when my country was still a colony of Belgium and was constantly praised in his college and everywhere he worked after that. He wanted a son that would be the same so he put me in an expansive school where white people living in Africa send their kids and I hated it because my sisters were in a normal school with no pressure while i had to deal with bullying and nothing I did at school was ever good enough with my father. He ended up kicking me out of the house twice because of my grades and after i came back because my mother insisted he would constantly act like I didn't deserve to be in his house or eating the food he buys. Because of that it made me never feel at home anywhere I went after that. I stayed homeless for 3 years just because i was never comfortable in any house with roommates and I couldn't afford to rent a place just for myself. When living with roommates i would constantly feel uncomfortable and tip toe around the house instinctively trying to avoid whoever I would see as the authority figure in the house so it was just stressful and exhausting and living outside where i don't have to worry about when "dad comes home" was way more comfortable.

Hope everything works out for you ! I hate that feeling of avoiding someone you share the same roof with, I swore my kids will never feel uncomfortable in their own home !

I can relate to the story at 12:08; back in 2015 I was on an overseas High school trip to China. I (a then 16F) was frequently the target of such pictures because of my red hair. Even my mother (a chaperone) pointed out there were peopel who'd take selfies with me standing in the background, or people run up to me with "Can I take a pic with you?" translated on their smartphones.
Even my uncle (Mom's younger brother) mentioned he was also the subject of photos when he went to CHina on an unrelated business trip; he's at least 6FT tall and of course something that's 'not normal' in China has to be photographed.

In my case when I went to China in 2007 and or 2008 I remember being so nervous in China back in the 2007 and or 2008 that I was temporarily not able to be super social like I usually was aka before I went to China back then I was a social butterfly but when I was in China I became really shy due to how much of a culture shock this was for me back then and needless to say I was so hesitant to talk to anyone in China that saw me,my mom, my dad and my aunt Susan that I remember every once in awhile hiding behind my mom and or dad when they were with me and I was 8 years old at the oldest at that point in time. P.s I also had a smaller culture shock was when I went to Tennessee and saw a decent amount of gun stores, a lot of Dolly Parton themed stuff as well as the Dolly Parton stadium which is a Wild West version of medieval times dinner and tournament and finally one moonshine store.

Wouldn't it be great if the USA was all about the R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Unfortunately, most of us seem to be about the A.P.A.T.H.Y. and I.G.N.O.R.A.N.T. in 2024.
Hopefully that changes someday. But judging by the children's behavior these days, don't hold your breath. I know I won't. 😒

Why does the person say his SO is Mexican American and native American like thery are one in the same. They are not. And I have yet to see any native American families act anything remotely like how Mexican families act.
