- Sri Lankan Skipper Arjuna Ranatunga started the war much earlier than the first ball of the Final. Ranatunga got to the nerves of Shane Warne and he seemed unable to get out of it. The tension was visible between the two with long-stares and short word exchanges. Arjuna hit the ball back ferociously through Warne's fingers in his last over before continuing on to dispatch a chest-high full tossed delivery over long leg for a maximum. Sri Lankan victory was merely a formality by the time Warne completed his spell with a costly last over.

Everybody talks about Jayasuriya, Ranatunga, Vaas. Nobody talks about the real boss man - Aravinda DeSilva. What a legend. So under rated.
Aravinda DeSilva was the best batsman Sri Lanka has ever produced but as far this match goes Australia dropped 2 vital and easy catches. First Asanka Gurusinghe was dropped of Paul Reiffel and then Ranatunga was dropped of Bevan. Had those catches been taken the match would have been a lot closer than it was. But yes Sri Lanka left a profound impact on that tournament. I mean they beat India in India twice in that WC. And Warne could not do anything in that final. But full credit to Ranatunga. He did transform Sri Lanka from being a competitor to India, Aus, Eng, SA, Pakistan to the number 1 side in the world.

Besides, Mark Taylor's team wasn't the best side in the subcontinent. I still remember the Titan Cup where they lost most of their matches against India and South Africa. And India was captained by Sachin who'd soon lose his captaincy.

It’s been 26 years on 17/3/2022. In a recent TV show 1996 SL players explained how confident Arjuna was before the final. There had been a time allocated for both teams to take photos with the World Cup on the day of the final. When Aussie team completed their time with the cup it was the SL team who was supposed to take pictures. When organizers reached Arjuna to inform the same Arjuna had told the organizers, there is no need for photos because “ we are taking the cup home”.
