Fighting Ranatunga & Ramanayake Final Over Heroics vs Alan Donald & South Africa in World Cup 1992

- Опубліковано 10 сер 2020
- This was the first-ever meeting of Sri Lanka and South Africa. Arjuna Ranatunga batted brilliantly to take Sri Lanka into the last over and flicked Alan Donald for 4 to reduce the target to 3 of 4 balls. Master-class Alan Donald came back superbly but was unable to stop Ramanayake hitting the winning runs.

I wont hesitate to say that Arjuna Ranatubga is the player/batsman/captain who changed the dynamics of Sri Lankan cricket in real sense.
Huge respect for the legendary player from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Arjuna Ranatunga changed the course of Sri Lankan Cricket. No doubt about it. We might have had better cricketers than him in talent and skill. But the journey to wherever Sri Lanka is now in the Cricketing map was pioneered by Arjuna, the most valuable player ever to play for Sri Lanka for me.
I always thought What Clive Lloyd is for windies ranatunga was for Lankans. He has many stories to tell like supporting murali, making jayasuriya and kaluwitharana as openers, building an attacking strategy, chasing and winning matches, grooming stars like jayawardene and sangakkara, those overseas tours with less money for meet the ends etc. I hope a docuseries comes out of these stories. Though these are known it's always special when it comes out from original masters.
@@coolbrowser2008 he has a case for ICC Hall of fame.
I am from Kashmir and I say that Ranatunga was the architect of Sri Lankan golden cricket
@@deepankarnakarmi8215 definitely.
It is a understatement,Since the days I knew,Sri Lanka was just a below average team.It was under Ranatunga, that players like Kalu, Jayasuriya,Murali ,Vaas all prospered and all of a sudden in 1996 WC these guys became monsters. They blew England,India,Australia to win the trophy.
I watched this match live on TV in 1992. We did not have cable TV then we had only Rupavahini with analog connections. I remember my brother turning the antenna when pictures deteriorate. And I remember being seated in the same position when SL was batting thinking that a wicket would fall if I move. That was the passion we had back then. Win or lose SL always won our hearts. This IPL generation will never realise what true cricket passion is. Money, fame, administrators and politics destroyed SL brand of cricket for good. I have not watched a match in years. I don’t even know who’s playing because they just come in and go out as quickly as they came. But I still watch these jewels from the past. I was 6 years old when Arjuna won this for us. I was fortunate to see him lift the cup 4 years later that too live.
Beautifully stated..luv it.. When watching semifinals in 1996 I kept asking my mom if I could stay home to watch the match without going for maths classes. she was almost going to agree and in quick fire we lost Kalu n Sana in two consecutive balls. I literally lost my appetite and fetched my books by default and rode my chopper to classes with a heavy heart. Then I got back home to see we were topping the scoreboard to a formidable score to a fightback that would live in our hearts forever and Yes, Eden Gardens went up in flames that night. Glory days ❤️
@@mariorajanayagam1176 please don't say that about Eden Gardens. It was our beloved stadium and you not only destroyed it but cursed it beyond any measure.
Venkatesh Prasad still takes sleeping pills to get over his headaches.

😢those days golden 🥇🪙
Antenna 📡 was only source of tv blurred some had mini portable which used to blurr a Lott then no cable TVs
Magnificent comment dear. Nobody will ever forget that day at the Basin Reserve.
Arjuna is a great personality, he changed the face of Sri Lanka cricket he never showed pressure and he always supported his players
'92 - Underdogs
'96 - Never lost a match, Champions🏆🏆🏆
He always stood behind his players, any other team Marvan Attapattu wud have been out of the team but Ranatunga persisted with him even after that horrendous start to his career nd rest as they say is HISTORY 🙏
One of best Captains Sir Arjuna Ranatunga.. i have always seen him play cool. 👌
Strongest teams in 90's Australia Srilanka and South Africa
...Hansi Cronje , Steve Waugh and Arjuna Ranatunga were the best captains at that moment they had the ability to Change the game at any point of time...... That was the Golden Era of Cricket.....Kind of a battle we have seen it was amazing.......Sachin- Ganguly, Jayasuriya - Kaluwitharana, Harshal Gibbs - Gary Kirsten ,Saeed Anwar -Shahid Afridi , Nike night-Marcus Trescothick, Adam Gilchrist -Mark Waugh that was the era of amazing openers...No comparison..and amazing fast bowlers Akhtar ,Bret lee ,Damien Fleming,Alan Donald ,Mcgrath,Akram ,Waqar,Srinath, Spin Bowlers Saqlain, Kumble,Murli, Warne
Chaminda Vaas
There can be a debate about No 1 Sri Lankan Batman, but Ranatunga is the No 1 Sri Lankan captain by a mile.
By a country mile
Yes that world Cup was one of my favorite....When I was in 7th class ..
That lofted shot from Arjuna shows his experience. There was no panic in his face and remained cool till the finish
From nowhere to mighty, the transformation very well mastered by Arjuna, Arvinda, Mahela and Sanath. Vaas, zoysa and murali balanced the end.
Ranatunga's experience👌🏻 has helped him to win this match.
My fevrate Srilankan capton
Rana Tunga what a man
One man army he was
Opner Jaya sorya
Salute from Pakistan
Also vass one of my fevrate bowler .

No 1 SriLankan bowler vass
No 1 SriLankan wicket keeper Sangakara
And best fielder T. M. Dilshan
Absolutely. D Silva is d number one batsman of Srilnaka. They who watched him play know how great he used to be in big games.
@@julieshyju2014 choice varies man to man. I have watched both D silva and Jaysurya since 96 and D silva has impressed me more and if u see experts's opinions, u can see they also prefer d silva and once d silva was compared even to Sachin but Jaysurya can never be compared to Sachin. But saying again, choice varies man to man.
@@julieshyju2014 I said earlier choice varies man to man . I like D silva more than Jaysurya.
@@julieshyju2014 jayasuriya only a slogger. But silva is a class player who can change gears.
Sanga and Mahela walked the path that Arjuna and Aravinda paved. Sri Lanka cricket needs another personality like AR to bring them to the top again!
National cricketers are derived from their particular society and as such, reflect the values that underpins such societies. Sadly, our modern Cricketers will only reflect the society of today and the values of today's culture. I hold little hope we will encounter a man approaching the calibre of Arjuna Ranatunga again.
This period was the golden age of cricket all teams were competitive
Not all....
1990 Australia, pakistan, west indies were best teams...( 1994 windies downfall started )
New powerhouse of cricket appear.. South africa suddenly became strong force as soon as they qualify again to play international cricket.....
Pakistan was strong team and win against them for us( indians )like diwali festival which came once in year.... We enjoy those days
Arjuna and Aravinda are all time favourites
0:17 Listen to what the commentator says. 'A tie is a tie, it's one point each. We don't worry about countbacks of who did what earlier in the game.'
That was said in 1992. Judging from the accent, he's a commentator from New Zealand. In 2019, NZ lost the World Cup final on boundary count after it was a tie.
still not finish that game will be back 2023...
He was speaking about the rule change. Before this the winner was decided based on how less wickets one has lost....
Before any tournament rules of the game will be set and communicated to all. The rules in 1992 were different compared to the rules in 2019.
Classic Ranathunga..captain cooool..!!
Ohhh what Beautiful days...ohhh 90sss. I love those days. True cricket. Golden days of cricket.
Please someone tell me what happened today. Why we r not enjoying anything now? In 90s everything was wonderful. Beautiful cricket, movies, everything....we were playing cricket in grounds perfectly. Now days new generation doesn't know how to bowl, how to bat n how to field. What happened today? And why 90s were Beautiful?
Arjuna ranatunga always great captain for Sri Lanka , great leader great batsman,
South Africans and their love for last overs...😂😂
Captain cool led not only the team but also the country. Fantastic!
But for this match Dsilva was captain
One of d greatest win in my memories.Jai ho Ranatunga..
Ranatunga. You are the Man. You are the Man.. Massive respect.
Pleasure to watch there event in that golden era just to satisfy 😢
Very nice upload bhai please keep up the good work
Kaluwitrna and ranatunga 1999 world cup what a opnrs 🎉❤
Ranatunga great player..made more runs without running b/w wickets.
1995 _1999 best teams SA&South africa
Gold standard of cricket ❤️
That Sri Lankan number 7. Seems to have some talent. May be a case for trying him up the order 😛
It was proved later on n he (Sanath U
Jayasuriya) became an international cricket star in late 90's.
I'm from India but seriously that time was that time every player it should be of any country they were emotionality attached for their country physic what is that see sir ranatunga he had belly stomach but he had a passion ability about cricket & today's player sorry to say but mostly they want to show their biceps💪 tattoo to cricket lovers it fulfill their work today only money money money that's it
Arjuna the best love from hindustaan
It was called a upset win against SA yet they went on winning the very next world cup with Ranathunga scoring the winning run
Sri Lanka number 01 captain. He is the man that brought world cup in 1996. Respect you sir ❤🇱🇰
Love Srilanka from India
Arjuna rantunga was a very brave cricketer
South Africa's 6th oneday back into international cricket...
One of the best cricket captain in world cricket. Changed the face of SL cricket. Ranatunga!
Two World Cups later Allan Donald was on the other side of the wicket and failed that time too. Unfortunately.
What do you expect he is a South African? All overrated chockers
Good old days of 90s cricket was great back then
Those were days where 6 runs from 6 balls were very much defendable....
Modern era 30 runs are not safe.... Poor fast bowlers.....
Batsmans became 6 hitting robot.... Who mechanically hit sixes 8/10 times easily...
Yes till 1996....3 or 4 sixes in whole one day match was ecpected...
We wait till spiners comes out to bowl..... Then batters like sidhus dance down the wicket & hit sixes....
Pliz sir vivian richard was all above them in 1980s.... Bradman one of kind... Then king richars was the same.... Way ahead of his time....
Cannot compare his record with modern era t20 players...
Great batsman. That time the srilankan team was a gem.
The Legend, the OG Captain. Respect from India.
Well done old SriLankan cricket team..
Golden days of Cricket
Great victory and congratulations to Arjun रणतुंगा.
This match changed psyche of SL ...that they are not weak team...and they can beat Strong team like SA...1996 wc champions❤️🙏👍
1992 was the best ever world cup
The video quality is great considering how old this is
I love this kit
Superb Arjuna
Such a long boundary...
Arjuna Ranatunga the most popular Sri Lankan player in the middle 90s.....Romesh Kawulitharan was famous too.
Superb win
Ranatunga the pot belied genius was one of the best captains ever
Very quick deliveries by Donald over 140 for sure
the revolutionary south african team loved that team of kapler wessels and hensie cronje
Outcome in knockout tournaments has always been the same whether in the past or present
and then after 4 years 💯
They start competing with top teams after 1992 world cup
That Lanka team was the best.
Jayasuriya, Kalu, Atapattu, Arvinda, Mahanama, Ranatunga, Tilakratne.. BATTING FORMIDABLE!
Not to mention they always had BEST spinners in the world EXCLUDING Murali the magician!
Best srilankan captain
I have always felt MS Dhoni has most of his captaincy shaped up like Arjuna. There are many similarities..
Wish India Vs Sri Lanka match shouldn't have been abandoned due to rain ☔ because it was reduced to a 20 overs per side game in Mackay Australia ♥♥♥♥♥
Sri Lankan cricket is dire straits these days...
I watched this match 1992
Legend of Lanka
Arjuna ranantunga
Aravinda de Silva
Muralitharan
Kumar sangakara
Even though Ruwan Kalpage was desperate for runs and made himself runout attempting a bye which was not there, look at the way his bat is touching the crease till the ball leaves Alan Donald's hand. Very much unlike the current day batters, especially the white ones who are out of the crease by miles even before the bowler reaches the bowling crease and then cry foul and teach the bowler sportsmanship when they themselves do not follow that. Remember the tirade by the western media and some western players against Aswin and Deepti Sharma for using the legal option of 'Mankading' after repeat warnings.
Arjuna Ranatunga Aravinda Dsilva Maravan Attapattu Sanath Jayasuriya Mahela jayawardena Dilshan Tillakratne Kumara Sangakara Chaminda Vaas Muthiah Muralidaran Russel Arnold Romesh kaluwitharana Nuvan Zoyza Dilhara Fernando Pulasthi Gu aratne jehan mubarak Sajeeva Dsilva are my favorite Cricketers
Ranatunga the lone warrior
sanath jaysurya was at no 7 player in those days🤤
Sanath Jayasuriya initially being a bowler (left arm orthodox) who could bat a bit is nothing but a myth. Certain people who had followed only the international games (Tests and ODIs) in early-to-mid '90s may tend to think so, mainly because of the fact that his first genuine match-winning performance representing Sri Lanka at the highest level came as a bowler when he took 6 wickets for 29 in an ODI against the touring Englishmen at Moratuwa in '93. However, it had been more of an experiment by then in order to utilize his skills as a decent utility bowler too, nothing more. But the fact that he had taken only a handful of wickets in the first class games up until that ODI, and had been used as a bowler only occasionally too, shows that he had been a specialist batsman from the very beginning who unfortunately couldn't secure a top order slot initially primarily due to the settled seniors like Roshan Mahanama, Asanka Gurusinghe, Aravinda De Silva, Arjuna Ranathunga, Hashan Tillakaratne, etc. who had been representing Sri Lanka then. Despite the slot no.07 granted to him initially in the Sri Lanka XI, Jayasuriya came into the side in 1989/90 having scored 2 double hundreds & another hundred too in Pakistan representing Sri Lanka Second XI (which was then known as Sri Lanka B team, not A team ...) against Pakistan Second XI. Then he made a couple of hundreds captaining Sri Lanka Under 24 side in South Africa in '92/'93, scored another 150+ too against the touring Indians in '93 at the Welagedara stadium in Kurunegala representing Sri Lanka Board President's XI. In the meantime, he had scored a few quickfire half-centuries too in the limited opportunities he had got in Test Cricket despite his record in ODIs being relatively poor as a batsman, until he was promoted to no.3 in late '93 in an ODI held against Pakistan in Sharjah when Sri Lanka were chasing 300+. Sri Lanka lost that game with a big margin, still Jayasuriya managed to score almost a run-a-ball 50+ against the strong Pakistani attack which consisted the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, etc.. Another even more quickfire 60+ followed in the subsequent game too against the same opponent (which happened to be Abdul Qadir's final appearance on the internationa stage.), thus justifying his inclusion as an attacking batsman at the top-order .... This had been almost 2 years prior to the arrival of Dev Whatmore as the coach, and T.B. Kehelgamuwa had been the team/Cricket manager for the tour .... Even then, the selectors and the team management were quite skeptical on making him an automatic choice for the Tests too. His solid 180 against SSC in the finals of Sarawanamuththu trophy '95, and his subsequent hundred in the 3rd Test against Australia in early '96 only a few weeks before the Worldcup '96, eventually helped him securing his deserving place in Tests too starting from '96. It's only after this that he caught the attention of the most followers of the game as an attacking batsman at the top representing Sri Lanka in both formats; Tests and ODIs ....
@@kasunekneligoda2354 what nonsense. He was an established batsman when he came to SL team. To date he is the only U-19 player to score a double century against Pakistan in Pakistan way back in the 80s. Arjuna and Whatmore experimented with him in 95 Australian tour knowing well that he is unorthodox
@@kasunekneligoda2354 initially Jayasuriya and mahanama, if I remember correctly Asia Cup 1995, Sharjah series 1995. In mid of Australian trination series 1995-96, they sent Kalu with Jayasuriya

Cool character Rana Tunga
Ranathungas headgear 😳😳 how to he face donald, great
I loved 90s Lanka team.
But last over 7 runs to win with a well-set world class batsman on strike with 4 wickets in hand, hardly seems heroics. Win was almost inevitable!
One & only captain
Omg he is running for himself 😀😀😀
Steely willpower of Arjuna Ranatunga wins the day
Alan Donald.. the white lightening!
This was the time when I was mad about cricket and Sachin Tendulkar the God of cricket..
Ranatunga was a class apart Captain.
South Africa had upset strong team's like Australia India and Pakistan in this 1992 World cup ♥♥♥♥♥
When they came to India before the wc as part of maiden international cricket return they played very well and lost 1-2. First 2 Odis they lost and third one they chased a big total of the time (shastri and manjrekar scored 100) and did much better than touring teams. This is because they had exposure to county cricket (example Clive rice) and lot of players played in rebel tours. Personally wasn't surprised them beating top teams in that time. Teams expected them to be minnows like zimbabwe and they turned out to be much formidable. In the first match against India Donald bowled a big inswinger to Sachin on his way to five for.
