Behind the scenes / bloopers of the Bireli Lagrene lesson videos.
Biréli Lagrène is a French guitarist and bassist. He came to prominence in the 1980s for his Django Reinhardt-influenced style on the guitar, as well as for being a jazz fusion virtuoso on the electric guitar. He often performs within the swing, jazz fusion and post-bop mediums.

His blues phrases & musicality though. Simply brillant 🤯
his electric blues is legit. and nasty. a virtuoso of many diverse styles. much respect.
+iloverumi he is indeed a great musician/guitarist
Bireli play more Jump blues please!
I used to work at the bar in the Pizza Express jazz club in London. When Birelli would do week residencies he'd just hang out with the staff in the local late night coffee shops after work. Just like another member of staff. Just a nice down to earth guy.
when Pat Martino was 14 years old he went to see Wes Montgomery in some club in N York and then he met him at his Hotel and Pat was asking him questions about modes and scales and licks etc and Wes answered hi" i cannot answer your questions just listen what i am playing "
see sometimes a musician cannot say some improvisations secrets that took years of practice to discover.
and i respect what Birelli said
I love Bireli Lagrene. One of the best players of all time. Easy guy and easy playing. Great. And he plays Jaco bass style too.
What freedom to play like he does and not have to think about theory at all. What a talent
Bireli Lagrene: Master of the Guitar! Your humility makes your greatness even more breathtaking.
Bireli, Don't worry! No one can copy that strong connection between your playing, musicality and soul. That is the key for personal and unique creativity. Keep on playing! It's fantastic!
Whoa, whoa, whoa! Wait a minute... He don't know guitar theory and is considered to be in the top 50 jazz guitarist of all time!
I respect him even more👏
I know a lot of poeple who don't know nothing about Notes and theory and they play profisional
@@rene.grondzi Same here man!
Theory can help but you still have to hear how it sounds.
he knows a lot of theory
He’s in good company- Django, Wes Montgomery, Hendrix, SRV and co
This man is a genius.
You're amazing Bireli!
looove Bireli
Bireli is a very great guitarist and really sympathetic , noone needs scales and theories at his level. these are only for guys who can-t play to come near to a higher level,
just play. Wonderful.
love this guy
Fantastique de simplicité et de talent!
So stoked you posted that!!! Love it!
formidable, merci
Wow....just discovered about him.
He is awesome....
Incroyable Bireli !
Even his mistakes are formidable. Amazing musician.
Wow, thanks for sharing this behind scenes video, the human side will always be the most important one. Saludos Maestro Bireli.
Just listen at 4 “38...damn this is dope!!!
A legend.....
Magnifique..!
Bireli Lagrene ... one of the legend
Exceptionnel !
Bireli is my favorite player
great maestro!!!
fantastique !
I used to think his electric rock playing was his weakest style, but he's nailed that as well now! I can watch/listen to so many players but it's always Bireli that really does it for me. Love the fact that he doesn't take himself too seriously and takes risks.
I have finally the gall to name him the best!
the best one !
This is an amazing example of how when someone has a truly gifted mind that was born to do this, everything just naturally flows to him quickly without much thought or hesitation. A highly advanced musicial mind that wasn't trained in school with years of fundamentals and theory is a special gift from God.
Mr. Ingenious!!!!!!!!
Super 👌🏻!!!
It blew my mind that he doesn't know anything about theory!! Really impressive!
His theory is in his fingers and ears. And no mattern how much theory you learn, you still gotta get it out of your hands
But his hands an ears knows. That's the important thing. You can hear that he doesnt just play random notes.
He probably knows the same theory everyone knows in a different form. Chord tones. Common sequences. Etc.
he must know a sort of theory, and it would've been great to share it to us. anything but this fake lesson..
TheoreticallyDan gypsy style man, gipsies play and often dont even know the chords names
Ehm. Bireli Lagrene playing the electric guitar with overdrive? I almost spit my coffee all over the place.
there's a life beside work
You could see he loved that.
Go chech his early years with the great Jaco Pastorius you will be in schock
He also played metal.
Well, that's essentially what he did around his 18-20 years old when he played with Jaco Pastorius ! He also play electric bass, double bass, violin ans sings !
An incredible musician ! 😉
Chouette ce type !
A living genius ... and doesn’t give a flying trombone about theory ... yet plays anything he imagines ... god given gift.
bireli the best!!!!!!!
A God that Bireli and all in a disarming modesty! He may not know how to explain what he does, but he feels it with all his heart and knows how to play it ... unlike some who can explain well what to do but are unable to play it!
"don't worry most people won't even be able to play these" "i hope not!" hahahahahah :D i fell off my chair xDDD
Yes I know..that was hilarious and showed that most people don't practice enough, or have other lives to live!
merci beaucoup
Le plus grand guitariste de jazz vivant. Il est un géant.
i real preciate it to have a master as bireli lagrene arround reminds me a lot jose monje (camaron de la isla) - sharing to the people - musical feelings does not need explainings
It would be interesting to make an interview about his own implicit logic about scales and chords. A genius of its own kind!
That interview would be his entire discography. Words can't cover it, music can.
I think what Bireli has and those like him is something akin to a photographic memory. The only thing is he can hear something just once and pretty much knows exactly where on a guitar fretboard to go and pick it out to duplicate it. You saw him do that twice here. In a very crude fashion most people can listen to a very simple melody line on a song and repeat it by voice. I’d venture as he’s learned chord positions the biggest key I think is first to get an ear trained so for one note; such as C you know the sound of it as a Cmaj, Cmin , C7th, Cdm etc, etc, etc. Once you learn or can hear those flavors it applies to all the rest of the notes. It will also give you scales based off this. The other thing is being able to hear in your head the harmonizing notes and going to a fretboard to pick those out instantly.
"Mi7 à La... Allah..."
Beaucoup d'humour et de légèreté 😂🤣😂🤣😂💞💕
Il a gardé son âme bon enfant ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This also shows how good Denis is too! Hats off to his excellent French also!
it's his mother tongue..
King
super! love it :)
I still see the 15y/o kid Bireli was when he first appeared on TV.....such a lovely guy.
i thought he was 12. ...with really bad teeth... but his playing! What a great guy!
Good (brotherly) laugh ; I did not expect that from Bireli, and it's even better! This said he is quite in a gypsy tradition, not being so impressed with academic knowledge. Otherwise he doesn't make me any younger. I have a cd he recorded when he was 14 yrs old (in French Alsace).
I heard his acoustic playing the other day. Blown away. Now hearing his electric playing. Equally blown away. Such mastery of the guitar with incredible, authentic expression. Still picking my jaw up off the ground...
This guy can play ANY style totally convincingly - Gypsy Jazz, Heavy Metal, Electric Blues - If it's a music with guitars in it, this guy can play it...
Hahahahaha nice! I hope i can get all of them! There is any discount?
One of the very few Jazz Guitarists who would even consider playing Rock Or Heavy Metal.
Godin guitars don't get to share the spotlight with Gibson, Fender, PRS etc., but they sure should! Bireli also wails live on a Yamaha on the tune "Mouvements"
A bit 'of humor to Mr. Chan would do well! Great Mr.Bireli !
the man have three jimi hendrix in every finger ... if he move to rock in his own carer he gonna be a legend in this game
I know a piano player like him, who doesn't care to know about the theory of what he does, but is literally the best pianist I've ever met. He can literally play anything like it's nothing. He performs cumbia music as a living though lol hey, it pays the bills
I never knew he was "illiterate" as me when it comes to the names of chords and what not, he just plays what he wants to play no matter whats its called, love it!
He 'knows' all the theory. He just doesn't know what they are called.
Someone I‘d love to Jam with. In our age we don‘t need to worry about ego or branding.
this is really funny. the man behind the curtain naming everything. the artist playing along as if the names of things might matter somewhat, even though the names of things don't matter at all.
Very well put
for those wondering why he plays blues rock, remember he one day filled in for Gary Moore, with none others than Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker on Montreux's last concert of a GM tour . For contractual reasons, I don't think this video will be disclosed ever
Where did you hear this? Genuinely interested, because that would be hip as all.
Although is the same think G#major and F minor pentatonic, Bireli probably was thinking about the G#major because he is using a substitute dominant D7>G , G#7>G
trop cool des vidéo comme ça lol :)
Le talent à l'état brut !!!!!
Was not expecting that heavy metal shredding 😅
C'est un génie
My French sucks.I'm glad they provided English subtitles.
he knows the right notes.....and that´s enough...;-)
Sometimes you are just born with something extra.
ha ha ! super !
i want to know something, when the guy play and Birelli copy whqt he play it is instant copy or he knows this?
I think it is instant copy, most of the good Jazz guitarists are able to do that
so much more interesting than the actual release... xd
And I thought I had "musical hearing!" He just picked up two complicated licks on the first try basically!
Over D major he was thinking G# (Ab) MAJOR pentatonic....tritone sub...not f minor. Subtle difference, but evident if you consider how easy it is to "see" the b5 on the guitar.
no, Fm pentatonic is a common sub for D7 not D major, it's a derivative of the altered scale. Doesn't have much to do with tritone sub, although the tritone sub can be found within the altered scale as well. Last but not least, Fm pentatonic is the same as Ab major pentatonic, so it really doesn't matter what it's called. But Bireli often uses an Fm shape when using this concept
In the video he's talking about D7, i wrote D major, but i meant that, obviously!
Love that kinda' talk.
Birelli would be like: what the hell are you talking about , guys? What is it scale? :D
I don't know about scales and theory either ... Sadly , I still can't play like this genius after 50 years , life's a bugger innit .
🌱🌳
hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!
He's an electric shredder too? :)

A lot of people can give a technical explanation of what bireli is playing. A very small handfull might be able to improvise at his level.Lagrene is not bound by theory. Describing music is not playing music. Django was illiterate, yet he invented a guitar style to this day, guitarists worldwide, aspire to play.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Excellent
I’ve seen him in shred mode before ,
