On Down -- Down Syndrome

- Scientists have known for some time that Down Syndrome, the most common chromosomal abnormality, is caused by an additional chromosome #21. However, new fetal stem cell research is demonstrating that it is not only the presence of this additional chromosome, but also what the genes are missing, that may impede the development of a Down Syndrome brain.
All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, "minds-on" experience. Ethical question: Why is abortion of abnormal life (if found early in the pregnancy) unethical?
@TheLizzie109, Don't feel sad about them, they are learning and at least they aren't dead.
It's called Down's Syndrome in the UK and it's just named after dr. John Langdon Down, who first described it in 1866.
"Down" rather than "Down Syndrome" was used to describe people with this condition at the beginning of the clip. Moreover, that's interesting connection-using fetal stem cells to develop tests to screen for down syndrome which will ultimately lead to tests for DS that will simply lead to more abortions rather than the cure that such scientists have been promising for years.
btw thanks 4 the vid!
Great video. I can tell there are people of Swedish ancestry in this video.
@janeenrocks5 well it is :D
this girl sounds like shes falling asleep on the mic
DS is not "deblilitating" nowadays, as the average life expectancy for DS people is currently 60 yrs of age. Moreover, "Down" is not the proper term for the condition.
thumbs up if you thought the things at 1:02 were bacon.
