      I have had my 40 hp for 5 years and never remembered to change the engine oil. I just bought 3 quarts of oil and a filter for $90 so have it planned out for tomorrow. I also had to buy the 18mm socket for the big plug.

    Thank you for the video!
    It actually took me longer to watch your video than to actually change the oil.

    Nice tutorial for us who haven't changed oil on a boat. Now I have a reference video that is simple and straight to the point.

      You will love it! I just upgraded to a 200 Merc boat and that size motor still gets great fuel economy!

    I really appreciate this. Have the same motor. Yes! Will save me some $$ - thank you
    I thought it would be really complicated, as they charge way more than a car oil change.

    Hi there I'm new to the channel so I know this comments a little late after the fact but I just wondered if I could add one thing is that when you change your oil filter make sure you check to see if the old rubber gasket from the filter is stuck to the engine sometimes people get in a hurry and don't notice that the gasket has come loose from the filter and stuck to the engine and if you leave it there and install the new filter you will have a oil leak and you should never really need to tighten it more than hand tight cuz after a heat cycle or two it will tighten up significantly on its own thats why they're so hard to remove if you snug them down with a filter wrench when putting them on

    Good video. I just got a boat with a Mercury 50hp of about the same era as yours and changed the oil yesterday (which had clearly been neglected). I wish Merc would have left more clearance for removing the filter. Even a couple mil would help. I have the spring action adjustable filter wrench which didn't really fit in that space.

    Not sure if this was mentioned in the comments. You could install the oil drain plug and also install the oil filter while the engine is tilted up and turned away so that there would be no oil leaking at all.

    Now...all I need is another boat to put this info to use...hahaha. like the boat thought bud, I really miss my bass tracker 😥. At what degree do you tilt the motor? So you don't take the filter off as you're draining to assure all the old oil comes out, like a vehicle?

    • @CatfishandCrappie
      @CatfishandCrappie  3 роки тому

      I tilt the motor to drain and add oil and that's about it. As you saw as long as you vent the oil reservoir by taking off the fill cap or pulling the dip stick it drains completely. You might get a drop or two that come out of the filter seal. I love that little boat so much I call it "The Game Changer"

    thanks for the great video ... just got a boat with the same motor on it and i am pleased to see how easy a oill change will be .. my motor is new and i am wondering about oil consumption during break in prior to 20 hours... any tips let me know.. i must take the time to compliment you on your video picture quality .. it is excellent !!! thank you .. ttfn

    • @CatfishandCrappie
      @CatfishandCrappie  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the Kind words! Just check the oil often (before each trip) during the break in and add what the manual says to. Don't overthink things ;)

    • @leonardvaughn9904
      @leonardvaughn9904 2 роки тому

      And as Mark mentioned synthetic oil is great oil but make sure you are through with your break in period Before using synthetic oils cuz the synthetic oils is so good that it won't allow the piston rings to set in but after your break in period you are good to go to use synthetic oil or whatever you prefer

    • @camamoutback
      @camamoutback 2 роки тому +1

      thank you ... i closely monitor the oil consumption...at first i was concerned as after following the break in procedure i was adding about 1/2 cup of oil after a 4 hour session following the mercury break in guidelines.. i am not sure about the total hours on the motor i guess by now 25-30 .. it has totally stopped using oil... i intend to leave the non-synthetic oil in for a about 50 hours...at that point i think i will do the first oil change and use non-synthetic mercury oil for another 50 hours.. thanks again

    • @leonardvaughn9904
      @leonardvaughn9904 2 роки тому

      Yeah I'm not sure what the exact break in hours are on the new Mercury but it being new I'm sure you have the manual after your break-in hours with the non-synthetic oil and your rings get seated you can definitely put in the synthetic oil when you change it and also I had mentioned in another comment on here when changing your oil filter be sure that the rubber gasket did not come loose from the filter and stick to the engine if it does and you install the new oil filter on top of it you will have an oil leak sometimes people just get in a little bit of a hurry and don't realize that the rubber gasket has come loose from the filter and stuck to the engine

    does the motor need to be warm for the change?

    • @CatfishandCrappie
      @CatfishandCrappie  Рік тому

      It does not BUT cold weather may effect the viscosity (rate at which it flows) of the oil when draining and filling.

  • @SCDeerAddict
    @SCDeerAddict 2 роки тому +2

    Mercury/Quicksilver 10w30 is better for a wider temp range, the 25w40 is 40 degree F and above..the 10w30 better if you fish year round and in cold weather
