I like how they have gasmasks on. in the book, the tripods deployed a heavy toxic gas that would stay close to the ground, so the gas masks make sense.
Its actually quite funny and awesome at the same time. Many of the tactics used in WW1 and WW2 in our history such as the Blitzkrieg was instead used to rapidly move German troops all the way across the north and around to reinforce the Allied Line that was holding back the Martians. Also, "Allied U-boats".
TheDarkLordIsHere The problem is how are we supposed to beat the aliens in the past? There was one book where we beated the aliens in land for 20 years form 1941 to 1961 only because we are much faster thinker than the aliens who couldn't resist the blitzkrieg, but if they wanted they could have easily bombarded Earth and conquered it. They didn't because they deemed immoral to extinct another specie. At the end we win because all our scientist managed to retro-engeener their tech and because we discovered a way to make them go crazy by throwing them saffron, but it's still a really unrealistic way of winning.
Well, if we're taking the facts presented to us in the original book by H G Wells, the Martian tripod fighting machines were vulnerable to direct or near direct hits from light and medium field guns. The Martians out-ranged the artillery with rocket launchers that shot canisters of black gas. Mind you, this book was published in 1896 or somewhere around then but took place in the early 1900s. With the all mighty power of eyesight, I think we could engage in a protracted conflict with the Martians and their extremely limited numbers with heavy entrenchment and bunkers, heavy artillery, and gas masks. Once the black gas proves ineffectual, the only option left to them would be heat rays, which puts them in range of the guns. If those guns are on reverse slopes (a common tactic from the great war.) I can see the powers of mainland Europe fight the Martians and win. The cost would be victory, but the invasion force's limited numbers would make every loss they take devastating.
WW1 was pretty creepy in the first place. But watching this video makes it highly more scary to think about. Imagine the amount of chaos and devastation caused by the tripods!

Hyperion, but your forgetting that Evan though the Martians were advanced, in the book, tripods were experimental weapons for the Martians, meaning they had some minor bugs, such as needing little holes in the legs for stabilization meaning gas could leak through into the cockpit making a flare gun that shoots gas grenades very effective.
Personally, the two creepiest things to me were when that giant Martian turns to look up at the airship that just ineffectually bombed it, and of course the robo-kraken sinking a merchant ship.

Im aware since I've read the book. I'm just defending the 2004 WotW Tripods for what they were, since it seems most down in the comments seem to hate the 2004 movie. The fog horn will eternally haunt my dreams.

If they didn't give them shields, the movie would've been 10 minutes long. If a handful of AT4 launchers can take out a tripod, what do you think an A-10, AC-130 or an M1 Abrams is going to do to the thing?.
Captain Falcon That is simply incorrect. Nowhere in his book did H.G. Wells state that the Martian tripods had shields; the British army actually managed to destroy a few of the fighting machines with artillery fire. The biggest issue with the tripods of the book was that they moved so fast that hitting them with artillery was damn-near impossible, but that was the only thing that would disable them.

What about deploying smoke screens and send full ahead tanks to ram into the tripods leg.
Cooldude 59 Or artillery shells that release gas? It'd make more sense seeing as how the original post said that artillery shells pierced through their armor...
daam i thought about that how use less a infantry in that time must feek fighting an alien with a rifle
Hyperion, but your forgetting that Evan though the Martians were advanced, in the book, tripods were experimental weapons for the Martians, meaning they had some minor bugs, such as needing little holes in the legs for stabilization meaning gas could leak through into the cockpit making a flare gun that shoots gas grenades very effective.

so true though XD
It was actually a pretty good movie (The Great Martian War) I would recommend it if you like "mockumentaries".
I felt more creeped out from that part where the tripod charged the camera than any part of the 2005 movie
For me the creepiest part was seeing the alien on the table but true the sweepers are pretty terrifying
Justanotherfurry 38 The alien on the table? are you serious?.. My little pony is scarier than that shit.
Personally, the two creepiest things to me were when that giant Martian turns to look up at the airship that just ineffectually bombed it, and of course the robo-kraken sinking a merchant ship.
First one was the most terrifying for me.
The airship part was cool

Im aware since I've read the book.
I'm just defending the 2004 WotW Tripods for what they were, since it seems most down in the comments seem to hate the 2004 movie. The fog horn will eternally haunt my dreams.
The small one are name Martian Spiders
Well played sir! The original History channel show is well worth a watch. No goofy shields like in the movies. I like the fact we can fight them and actually take em out. "COME ON THUNDER CHILD"!
Yeah but I can see why they gave them sheilds in both movies it would've been to easy to take them out with modern weapons
If they didn't give them shields, the movie would've been 10 minutes long. If a handful of AT4 launchers can take out a tripod, what do you think an A-10, AC-130 or an M1 Abrams is going to do to the thing?.
seewall11 in the book they had shields, blame H G Wells if you don't like it
Captain Falcon That is simply incorrect.
Temperus Maximus never mind, I just realised they are not necessarily distinct things
This is the only time where the cameraman isn't immortal. At 1:24, he was attacked by the alien tripod.
No fam. He teleported out of there before it killed him.
Nah man, he's just walking over to check if the scene looks good
He dropped his camera when the tentacles grabbed him, later his blood was extracted and used to feed the invaders and water the red weed. His body is still missing, but his camera film reel was recovered, processed, and prints sent out such as the one you're seeing here.

THIS is what war of the worlds should be like! The classic 19th century weaponry against advanced Martian tech. The book and radio broadcast did this, then the 1952 version came, but it was still very good, then the musical going back to the classic and then the crappy 2005 version. If there will ever be a new war of the worlds movie, it should look like this!
I mean, it wasn't that crappy, but I just didn't like it for some reason. But, I'll give you that. The tripods did look amazing
Oh no, it's ok. I like criticism as long as it's constructive.
I didn't like the 2005 version because they completely omitted the Thunderchild from it.
***** the Thunderchild took out two tripods before being destroyed with its destruction taking out a third. Besides battleship vs tripod would've made the movie for me.
***** Doesn't matter it wouldn't have killed them to have a destroyer off shore supporting the military called USS Thunderchild. When the Martians appear the destroyer rushes in to distract the tripods to buy time for the escaping steamer. The destroyer is able to ram and take out a sole tripod before being destroyed. However it's sacrifice allowed the steamer to escape. I also hated that they have the Martians shields in this movie.
WW1 was such a creepy and horrific time and this made it more creepy
Imagine if this really happened before and it's written in our hsitory books
