Yes, my old manager. But I think he was fully aware of what he was doing and it was bullying. Mix in the fact I think he was insecure and potentially saw me as a threat. I tried countless times to prove to him that I was willing to work alongside him - yet underneath him - but he wouldn't have it. I like to consider myself having good self awareness and I'm sure I didn't do anything to provoke this behaviour. He did teach me a lot Inadvertently. More importantly - micromanagers aren't even effective themselves! They don't care. They would rather a department was completely stagnant than operating without their constant involvement. This person does not care about employee growth or retention as they have enough power in the organization that turnover doesn't seem to be of issue to upper upper management - they care about retaining maximum control, and receiving maximum credit -

I've had 2 micromanagers back to back and I scratch my head, too. How in the world did they last so long as managers? I think the answer is that they bank on the real work of their employees.
I believe people who micromanage are genuinely really good at their previous position. They excelled in their position which is why they get promoted. BUT leadership is a new kind of a skill which if you aren’t trained in will lead to micromanaging.
100% spot on. I've definitely fired a boss before for this. I am a really hard worker, with positive, conscientious focus towards my work. I work as a team, or as a leader. Im very flexible. Indeed I even understand that there are times, where someone has to manage a project or job from top to bottom, inside and out. But these are the exceptions, to the rule, and usually only for a brief time span But when someone is micromanaging on a day to day basis, and done so with complete control, ignoring skilled individuals around them.... I'm getting ready to leave.
Spot on and we'll said Parnellio! It's nice to have the awareness and courage to fire a manager like that! Sorry to hear that Barry! It's unfortunate that some people don't get it. Micromanaging is a destroyer of morale. It makes good, productive people question everything they do. This affects their performance and their attitudes. I hope you can manage through this! Thanks for sharing!
My husband and I opened an engineering company five years ago and sold it to an equity firm. The first company they bought was in charge of merging the two companies. Now I ran HR payroll and did executive administration as a part-time person for five years by myself. Now that there’s no need for my position, they asked if I wanted to work in the new company in their HR department. My boss who is about 62, is treating me like a 22-year-old intern. 😂 wanting to know why I didn’t give advance notice for working from home ( it was a snowstorm and I wasn’t sure how much snow it would be) when I had to work in another office for two hours. She wanted to know why I couldn’t drive to the other location and work the other two hours instead of staying put. There are lots of other things as well, but those are the two that really struck me. I’m about to go in and give my notice tomorrow because at 54 I’m just not going to be treated like this. It’s quite a shame because I had a lot of automation ideas to offer to replace their outdated methods, but oh well!
Firing your manager! Good for you. It's too bad that so many managers feel tye need to control. They have internal image and trust issues. Congratulations on selling your company!
I couldn't build enough processes and get good reviews enough to not be stifled on bullet points. I am pinged for EVERYTHING and I feel so suffocated and unempowered. Ive just started fixing my resume and I only worked here for 7 months I wanted to stay for a while ny manager is to much!
I can sense your frustration Jennifer! So disappointing when we are unable to express ourselves and contribute the way we can best add value. Get that resume ready and find a manager that values and trust you!
The micromanager on my team has led to three people quitting (on a ten person team). I will be the fourth in a few weeks. Hopefully, it will eventually dawn on everybody that she is a costly liability and not an asset. I'll be gone by then. Not my circus, not my monkeys.
Excellent video, I agree with what the speaker said, many cases people left their jobs because of bosses that micromanage, I understand the boss needs to be informed what is going on but every 10 minutes? It is ridiculous.
Micromanagement= Incompetence who denies, sabotages the skills and talents of other group members out of fear of being replaced or exposed for lack of lidership! Simplier: I am not willing to be open to new, better ways of achievement because it took me time to convince the organisation that my way works...even though I know it isn't! I dont have the energy, time to start new. So I will do everything on my power to control others approach and progression because I choose to be stagnant and self-righteous! Narcissism
I have been in leadership, here is my thoughts. I have never worked for an organization that prepared their leaders for the person to person interactions and how best to navigate the complex world of relationships to benefit everyone. It is an overwhelming task with many variables. It's pretty much a sink or swim situation. Those leaders that meet organizational goals will last, and those that do not fail. Don't forget that your boss is more replaceable than you are ;)
this is the #1 reason why i just left my job......they wanted me to tell them via chat that i was going to the bathroom....so, i fired them.....what a great feeling.....
This should be mandatory material for "managers" and "supervisors". Ours openly knew and admitted that they did not know the first thing about what the tech support team's work, knowledge and expertise entails, and yet had the gall to think they could push them around and harass them with their 'productivity tools'....they're soon down to a precious few in the department in this well known industrial printer manufacturer, and may soon have the honor of doing the job themselves.
Leticia, it's unfortunate that so many managers are just unaware of this behavior. It's quite possible that they were managed this way and believe this is the way to manage people. Losing great people may be what it take in order to become aware of this destructive behavior. Wishing you the best!
My supervisor is a micromanagement. Thank God she only comes to our office bi-weekly. Re-doing reports 2, 3, 4 times is inefficient, unproductive, and abuse to employees!!!!!
Abuse is a great word Kimberly! Embrace that your supervisor only comes in bi-weekly. Also, as I mentioned in the video, bombard him/her with info before being asked. See if that helps! Thanks for watching, I hope it helped. 😊
Most of all trust your employees. You'll figure it out later if they need someone to hold their hand. Usually you're gonna be surprised that they don't. You'll find you can give them tasks and walk away without worrying if it's gonna get done or not and find something more important to focus on.
I wish I could share this with my new manager 2 days in and she is demanding, rude and hyper micromanaging I'm giving her a few weeks before I'm outta there along with half of the team only 6 of us so loosing 3 isn't going to fun for her
If you enjoy what you are doing and the team you are working with it's worth a shot to have a conversation with your manager. She may not even realize she is micromanaging! If things don't change, then decide if you are going to fire her😊

@@healingdiscovery4436 why anyone works for amazon is astonishing. How they became such a success is beyond belief if the employment structure is really as bad as we hear.
In the warehouses. They have an endless supply of workers so they can get away with it. A smaller business that can’t hire anybody off the street that can pick up and put down boxes isn’t going to last.
Exactly! You are spot on! This is why we need to understand them better and manage the relationship based on that understanding. If they are dysfunctional, then hard decisions need to be made.
Exactly why I leave my current company and yet they come with excuses of why I leave and not giving them time to look for a replacement... Been 3 years with them and I shared my thoughts of getting 2nd guy to take care of the task when I'm not around.... Guess what they do not care one bit. Now when the time comes they blaming ... Like really? Horrible company
Is micromanaging entirely bad? Isn't it a manager's job to assess and monitor their team to make sure they're doing their job right? Or am I not having the understanding what micromanaging is? Please enlighten me. Thank you.
Hi Buddha, Thanks for your comment and question! I will start with a quote from Sir Richard Branson " Approximately 69 percent of employees said they considered changing jobs because of and another 36 percent actually changed jobs.
@@boddha08 So is it entirely bad, well I guess that depends on why you are micromanaging. If you are temporarily trying to help someone and feel that is a good approach for that individual, then as a manager that is a decision you make. However if this is your approach with everyone all the time, then the answer to your question is YES, it is entirely bad. Hope that is clearer 😊
Assess and monitor: yes. Giving encouraging/positive feedback: yes. Breathing down their necks and checking in on them every step they make without actually helping the team: NO!!!

I was in automotive mechanic at a dealership they get crazy with micromanagementI got into truck-driving it was great the first 7 years now the trucking industry is micromanaged cameras and trucks we have computer logs now I got in trouble 72 mi an hour in a 70 I was going downhill speed limit is 70 mi an hour this stuff is crazy out of control I've been with my company for 18 years never had any problems I have a flawless because of micromanagement I got written up it gives people low self-esteem micromanagement you're afraid you're going to get in trouble for something I'm always paranoid about getting in trouble it finally happened after 18 years I'm 49 years old I can't wait until I retire because job is not fun anymore I don't enjoy anymore because of micromanagement.
Sorry to hear that Barry! It's unfortunate that some people don't get it. Micromanaging is a destroyer of morale. It makes good, productive people question everything they do. This affects their performance and their attitudes. I hope you can manage through this! Thanks for sharing!
That's the whole point ,they need any excuse to fire someone so they won't gain seniority and get paid more
My husband and I opened an engineering company five years ago and sold it to an equity firm.
Spot on. Do not tolerate it.
Sometimes it takes the loss of great people before leadership realizes the root cause of the issue. Best of luck Laura!
Life is too short to work for bad managers
Me to micromanager: "I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to let you go ..." 😄
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Excellent video, I agree with what the speaker said, many cases people left their jobs because of bosses that micromanage, I understand the boss needs to be informed what is going on but every 10 minutes? It is ridiculous.
Thank you!
Great, simple, and explained well
Glad it was helpful!
Micromanaging is a waste of time. Give your employees clear expectations, and then stand back and let them do their jobs!
Well said John!
Narcissism
Well said from someone who has certainly experienced this behavior!😊
I have been in leadership, here is my thoughts. I have never worked for an organization that prepared their leaders for the person to person interactions and how best to navigate the complex world of relationships to benefit everyone. It is an overwhelming task with many variables. It's pretty much a sink or swim situation. Those leaders that meet organizational goals will last, and those that do not fail. Don't forget that your boss is more replaceable than you are ;)
Very well said!! Thanks for sharing.
Great information! Thanks 👍
My pleasure Rachel!
“Great idea, run with it! Ok now let me change everything you just did”
😁 I've seen that before! Thanks for sharing Sarah!
this is the #1 reason why i just left my job......they wanted me to tell them via chat that i was going to the bathroom....so, i fired them.....what a great feeling.....
"Great feeling!" 😊
It's mostly to hide their own incompetence.
Well said JoeBob
Please tell my manager this 😂
😁
I just quit my job after 14 years, as the new boss applies micromanagement. It's so frustrating and detrimental. I just get a new great job.
That must have been s difficult decision after 14 years! Sounds like it was the right one though. Congratulations!
If things don't change, then decide if you are going to fire her😊
Thank you 🙏
My pleasure Cindy.😊
well done!
Micromanagement definitely kills creativity. You have been hired to do your job as creative as possible but were held back by micromanagers.
Spot on Jason! Thanks.
Amazon and universal both do this...
Amazon is a beast. They go beyond micromanaging into straight surveillance and invasion of privacy while expecting your productivity to improve. And while piling on double the workload. Absolute WORST company to work with.
That is disturbing to hear!
Facebook does too in my experience
@@healingdiscovery4436 why anyone works for amazon is astonishing. How they became such a success is beyond belief if the employment structure is really as bad as we hear.
In the warehouses. They have an endless supply of workers so they can get away with it. A smaller business that can’t hire anybody off the street that can pick up and put down boxes isn’t going to last.
The tragedy is that they likely do not know they are a micromanager.
Exactly! You are spot on! This is why we need to understand them better and manage the relationship based on that understanding. If they are dysfunctional, then hard decisions need to be made.
I fired them after day one.
😁
Exactly why I leave my current company and yet they come with excuses of why I leave and not giving them time to look for a replacement...
Been 3 years with them and I shared my thoughts of getting 2nd guy to take care of the task when I'm not around.... Guess what they do not care one bit.
Now when the time comes they blaming ... Like really? Horrible company
Hi Akarapong, Looks like you make the right choice! You fired your manager! :)
Is micromanaging entirely bad? Isn't it a manager's job to assess and monitor their team to make sure they're doing their job right? Or am I not having the understanding what micromanaging is? Please enlighten me. Thank you.
Hi Buddha, Thanks for your comment and question! I will start with a quote from Sir Richard Branson "
Approximately 69 percent of employees said they considered changing jobs because of and another 36 percent actually changed jobs.
@@philcicio sorry sir, that didn't answer my question for me.
Breathing down their necks and checking in on them every step they make without actually helping the team: NO!!!
tower of micro management
Employees will become passive aggressive too. Feed you to the hog and you will not know what happened.
That too! Thanks!
I think supervisors have no value
