Wow, that's powerful. I'm so glad to hear you're following the path that feels right, hopefully this experience will help you find the leader who can leverage your skills the best. You know your worth! Keep it up! 🤘
A story as common as a penny. Hope you find a great new spot. Maybe send this video to your manager on the way out with some kind and gentle feedback about why their leadership style is hard for you to thrive in and why you’re moving on :)
I would happily work for you. I hate being micromanaged especially after having 10 years of experience. Sucks the life out of me and now I'm job-hunting to escape another toxic workplace
Not only do you have excellent advice to stop micromanaging but you have great taste in music too. Jaydiohead--how have I not heard of this? This is pure gold. Thanks, as always, for sharing your wisdom!
My boss requires the team to have an hour of "status meeting" DAILY. On top of updating tickets daily. Constantly asking/calling how's (insert task) going. I'm exhausted and start looking for a new job now.
I worked in sales where the manager spent at least an hour of every morning going over each sales person check in,looking over paperwork and making sure every hour was scheduled.by the time we got into the field we were already behind schedule
I just lost my job. My client terminated me... my boss is a micromanager it just came clear to me now. My work was affected because of her. Everything is urgent for her she says I'm not productive but I am doing 3x more than should be in a day. She is very meticulus but disorganized. I am so demoralized. I've been mentally and emotionally distressed.
Oh I’m so sorry to hear that Nysa, that really sucks. That sounds like a really tough situation. I hope that you’re able to find support and that things turn around for you:)
Thank you for short presentations. It's good to indicate how to deal with people. I work as a Scrum Master because it's one of the few Agile jobs that has a clear and succinct job description. However you have to learn to be the servant and the leader for yourself.
Im being micromanaged by my boss whos practically half my age and ive already come to blows with her. She backed off for a while but shes at it again and its very tiresome. At my age its difficult to find work so somehow im going to have to find a way out.
I have micromanaging husband and we have married for 16 years. And this months the scale become more higher even before. I had told him that he has this syndrome. And he seems want to change his habits. The question is.. is there any particular therapy to cure this behaviour? Many thanks before
Yeah that sounds ridiculous. Why would you pay someone a salary to go watch somebody else work to make sure if they’re working? Also exactly what you described of having employees feel like they’re being watched at every moment is a shitty feeling. Acting like someone is untrustworthy before they’ve proven themselves to be untrustworthy is bizarre.
Hi Galen I work as a outlet manager for a coffee shop , This is a new department I started to manage and found employees not completing their day to day task with spot checks I did also notice employee theft . I had to place some controls to monitor them witch check lists and forms to fill . I do feel i micro manage at times . what would be your advice
Such a great question, Birendra! There's a lot to unpack here, I have one final free live Q&A this Thursday, January 28 at 11:00 am PT here on UA-cam where people can come and ask me anything. I hope you'll join so we can unpack this a bit!
Wow this was so good!!! I just started a new job I may have been micro mgr at long time of ago but I’m a AP Mgr only been job 2 mo she is this way it is bad this helped me so much It’s not me
If you are looking up videos on how to deal with a micromanaging boss, it is already too late. You are clearly showing initiative on how to fix a relationship, but this micromanager is likely a narcissist, and narcs have little to no empathy for others. Plan and execute your exit strategy now. You will never be able to make yourself small enough for them, and they will drain you of everything you care about, one piece at a time. If you have been critiqued as a micromanager, you will likely never be cut out for leadership, and should resign or ask to be demoted to solitary confinement in a basement closet immediately. The only person you should interact with is a licensed therapist and learn that you are not the center of the universe, and that people are hired to perform certain roles for a company, not to serve YOUR needs. Pull your own weight, instead of forcing good people to lift you up.
Who hurt you? Haha. Yes, some (many) people who are bad leaders will never be great leaders because they’re not open to the feedback or receptive to the growth mindset it takes to self reflect and improve. Leaders who aren’t willing to do that aren’t worth a lick of salt in my book, I don’t know about solitary confinement but demotions all around fosho:)
@@GalenEmanueleShiftYes Hahaha! Yes, I am in the middle of some hurt right now. Five years of it, and all the way at the end of twenty with the team. That is my current up-to-date life story up there and I hope my comment saves a version of me in the future. LOL. Thanks for making videos to address it.
I agree with everything you stated. My current supervisor is a narcissist with very little empathy. I get holes stared into me and my computer daily. And your last statement...FACTS.
Then they probably need better communication and coaching, not micromanaging. My honest answer is that it’s also up to leaders to clearly communicate exactly what is expected of their team in terms of performance, behavior, timelines, and caliber of work, and then hold each individual accountable. Give a clear picture of what a 10/10 looks like and when that isn’t met, find out why, how you can support them, and if with all of that done well they are still underperforming then be clear about the consequences of that if their performance doesn’t turn around and exactly what it needs to look like instead. When diving into these situations, it’s often lack of clear communication and effective coaching that is the root of the issue, in my experience. It’s not a leader’s job responsibility to breathe down their team’s necks to make sure they’re working and getting their work done right. If you have to be doing that all the time then you’ve got the wrong people in the wrong roles, or more likely, you’ve got to brush up on your coaching and feedback skills. That’s my take on it:)
I work at a grocery store...... the people are ok... but I work with this old guy...he's a pain in the butt. He adds work to my schedule... while he does absolutely nothing...... its affecting my sleep at night... I'm ready for a change
@ 0:40 you are stating that we shouldn't micromanage if they are capable not proven otherwise. What if your team always screws deliver late and come up with BS excuses and yet you have to work with these people. Sometimes micro management necessary!
If a team (or individual) is always screwing up, and there is a repeated pattern of behavior or performance issues, then what you really have is a problem with the leadership of that team or person. The ability to set and communicate clear expectations, to coach and correct behavior & performance in order to get people back on track and hold them accountable to pulling their weight, the courage and wherewithal to remove them from the team if things aren't changing -- these are all things that fall to leadership and that's what the problem is in that situation. Micromanaging is not the solution, it's a band-aid for poor leadership.
I resigned my job today due to the same reason and shared this video with my manager. I hope this video helps him to understand why I quit.
Wow, that's powerful. I'm so glad to hear you're following the path that feels right, hopefully this experience will help you find the leader who can leverage your skills the best. You know your worth! Keep it up! 🤘
This is so true! I'm about to leave my job for this reason. What's sad is the manager keeps wondering why there is such a high turnover rate. Lol

Agh, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's the lowest form of leadership.

👏👏👏👏👏👏🎬 give them training - let them do their job
Exactly:)
Micromanaging is tearing teams apart
Yeah, it's rough and causes a lot of static and unhappy employees.
Great insights 👏🏻
Thank you! 😊
Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Juan!

I hope it does help, thanks Yolandha :)
Wonderin how not to micromanage when your groupmates does not deliver the task/s given?
Upwork has time tracker tool that takes screenshots and record things like keystrokes, mouse, etc. It makes me so uncomfortable to work through.

This comment should be removed and reported. I’m a micromanager and I am working to fix that 😢
Micromanagers are really Saying , " The office does not hireCorrectly!" they areci Dependent eighth graders
It's true, it sends a signal of not trusting or believing in the person who was hired for the role.
What happens when you give them the trust and they are underperforming????

what do you call a geezer who micromanages all the time? Mike - Romanager

I just cannot work with a micromanager.i have been more productive when allowed to just go do the work
