My Journey to Videography

  • Today, I want to share my videography journey. It's something that I haven't talked about on the channel. Quite honestly it took me a long time to put it into words, and it took me a lot longer than that to figure out WHY I'm on this path.
So, I figured I would sit down in front of the camera - no fancy cuts/transitions, no b-roll, minimal music - just an open, honest conversation about how I discovered videography, and what my journey has looked like. I don't think it's been the typical journey, but I also wouldn't trade it for anything - despite more downs than ups.

I feel like with videography its one of those professions where you don't need any prior experience to take a leap. Met people from all over who used to marketing, business, and other unrelated professions but are now locked into the videography business. I ended up becoming a filmmaker because when I went to college for business I hated it, I didnt care and I almost failed out of business school, so I decided to go to a (pretty bad) film school because it's what I was familiar with when I used to be a youtuber (on my old channel) where I self taught myself how to film and edit videos. I like to think I've come a long way since that and I'm so happy I get to work in this industry everyday.

I admittedly over-generalized other people's experience and introduction to videography, haha. I have met quite a few people who took a non-traditional approach to it. Sometimes I wonder where I'd be if I had discovered my love for it sooner, but I try not to linger too much on that because I'm so happy that I found it at all. Especially after basically a decade of feeling lost. Now I get to be a part of this amazing community and learn from/connect with people such as yourself!

@@rivvidproductions There are so many resources to learn from as well! And with entry level cameras getting more affordable and better theres no better time to jump into the filmmaking/videography world!

That's so cool you were impacted by that video you shot so strongly. What a beautiful thing! Also shoutout to the wife! Ain't nothin' like a good wife :)

The wife is the inspiration for everything, man (even the name of my business haha). And yeah, it was quite a cool moment - I'm glad moments like it continue to happen, no matter what I'm shooting. Makes me feel like I'm on the right path!

I'm really enjoying your videos, having been recommended your "working with agencies" video. Became your 100th subscriber as a result.
Pro tip: Can you notice your left ear glowing red from the back/edge light? It literally illuminates ears from the inside, and since they're full of blood vessels they glow red. You probably don't want that effect if you light a client or subject the same way, so something you can do to prevent that glow is to stick black gaffer's tape on the "skull side" of the ear (the back part not facing the camera). Don't recall where I learned it, but I've used that trick for still photo shoots for years.

I greatly appreciate the compliment and the pro tip! I’ll definitely give the tape a try - I hadn’t noticed the red glow from the edge light, but now I won’t ever NOT see it haha
New vlog in the works now - should be coming out in the next week or so!
