My son had a 2019 JL. It spent more time at the Jeep dealer being fixed than it did in his garage. Check engine lights for Electrical & 4 wheel drive problems. After a 12 week stay at the dealers, waiting on parts, or so they said. He sold the Jeep and got a Tundra PU. I was replacing a 97 TJ. I decided to go with a preowned 2015 JK that was in dealer new condition inside and out. It was the Freedom version with leather seats and Alpine sound system. I wanted a Sahara but the Freedom was close enough to satisfy me. As far as I am concerned the JK has all the technology I would ever need. The JL has more technology and thus more things that can go wrong or break. I’ve had my JK for a couple of years and I’m totally satisfied with it.

Yeah okay a Rubicon vs a wrangler sport $60,000 worth of factory updates vs his $40,000 of his updates they should have run neck and neck jk Rubicon vs the jL Rubicon
Gary Goldberg I saw a review stating get a land rover they leak like crazy, but are super cheap and ready to off road! $2500 found it in the Colorado Spring!
that one was a '97 bought for $2500 so that guy obviously isn't concerned about warranties or shelling out lots of money. it's a toy. nobody drives a new LR off road. it's always the 2nd or 3rd owner or beyond. if something breaks, you can find used and after market parts and do it yourself with older trucks. even a rebuilt engine or tranny is not that much, unless you're flat broke, and then you wouldn't be off-roading tempting fate.
Good run, the factory lockers are great, but I love the cloth upholstery in Tommy's JK and so on and so forth,...as long as they're Jeeps, it's the drive that counts, and it looks like fun no matter what. By the way Roman,...you weren't the only one who 'reacted' when the Land Rover tipped and swayed there,...except I let out with a word that I shouldn't show here.
I started out with a 2003 TJ. I drove that as a daily driver till i traded that for a 2010 JK Sport. After driving these for 15 years as a daily driver i decided to change things up. I am doing more travel, but i still wanted some off road capabilities, so i traded in the JK for a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I love the comfort of the new Cherokee and the ride going down the interstate. I do miss my JK but I think the Cherokee will do just fine for me. By the way, I love your videos on the Jeeps and your Diff loc series. Thanks for everything you've done for JEEP.
Great video of father and son wheelin'. Although it's strange to hear Tommy calling his Dad by his first name. But for the sake of the video, I get it. Both of these 2 door Wranglers look good. But the JK looks awesome. I only have a limited slip diff and after seeing this, I have to save up for at least a rear locker and soon.
Sacatolas Moreira This is definitely something I've never heard of. I would never call my Dad by his first name. THAT is a lack of respect. I have 2 sons and if either ever called me by my first name, there's going to be a problem!
I miss my JK. it was a 2010. No crazy mods on it, but it had 33’s and a couple tops to play with. Total slug on the highway, but it was awesome taking the doors off in the summer. I had too much of a commute to justify it. Can’t wait to pickup a Wrangler in the future ! Great review TFL
My thoughts? Get a used stock JK Rubicon that's been driven by some pavement princess for a couple of years. You'll pay new JK sport pricing for something way better. There are very few Rubicon drivers out there that wish they got a Sahara or a Sport, but there are tons of Sahara/Sport drivers out there that wish they got a Rubicon. Especially once they hit a real trail.
Dwealdric exactly I bought a 2015 mall crawler 30 000 km 33s on 18s has a Bush bumper and a 12000 lb winch way cheaper than a new one and still like new
I looked at all kinds of Used models...almost bought a JL...then a Sahara...was looking at the 10 year anniversary Rubicon...but felt it was over priced...settled on a 2014 Rubicon with 50k miles on it with a beat to shit wench. I anticipate wrenching time...and look forward to learning it.
@@street_legal_go_kart7356 true, rear air lockers and manual sway bar is pretty much all you'd need for most off road. The electronics in the rubicon's gonna break real fast
As always, wonderful videos. Love the interplay between Roman and Tommy. So natural, not forced and very informative. I must be honest, I am super impressed with the Jeep brand, it does what it says it can do, and more!
I just traded my Jk Wrangler sport six speed for a new JL Wrangler sport 2.0 four cylinder turbo with a 8 speed automatic both are two doors . So far I like the JL a lot and it’s getting better gas mileage.
Some key differences not mentioned: 1. The Rubicon (JK or JL) comes with a 4:1 Rock Track transfer case, versus a 2.72:1 in all other models. 2. The JL comes with larger brakes (Rotor Dia. & Dual Piston Calipers) which make a significant difference when upgrading to 35s. This becomes a necessary safety upgrade - especially on the heavier unlimited models. 3. The Rubicon comes with a more robust D44 (JK)/ M210 (JL) front axle. When shopping back in 2015, we chose a Rubicon Unlimited over a Sahara due to the heavier duty suspension and 4.10:1 axle ratio - strictly for trailer towing advantages. Then we got into off roading and joined a local Jeep Club (Jeeper's Anonymous); looking back, I would sorely regret not choosing the Rubicon. The Rubicon will go places and climb things a Sport or Sahara simply cannot do because of the locking differentials.
I love the JK, I have stock LSD and mine keeps up with the rubis But at the end of the day a jeep can vertuelly go anywhere and you will belong to a wonderful club of the jeep world WELCOME my fellow JEEPERS
I have a '18 JK Willys and my brother has an '18 JL Sport Plus and we love both of them! At the Sport level, they're very similar vehicles, some additional creature comforts and a higher price tag are the big differences. I must say, I love what they've done with the Rubicon JL but $60k for a Jeep is a bit out of my price range! Great video!
Love ur video’s, and really appreciate this one. Tommy my fav is ur 20 second mod break down. Wife and I are both JK owners, mine is heavily modded and wife is now looking at the JL’s....they are both great Jeeps. Think the JL did a great job of evolving the Jeep without compromising what Jeep stands for (is pricey though). Appreciate that you are comparing them off road, and know that is the reason I follow you guys!!! Thx again, keep the video’s coming!!!
Jeep Rubicon truck vs ZR2. Now that would be a great episode. I am however biased since I currently own a ZR2 gasser. I traded in my Jeep for the ZR2. Couldn’t be happier but I loved my Jeep too.
Tommy hits the real nail on the head: The new JL is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. Fiat once again "went upscale" and crammed it full of lots of techno whiz-bang that a Wrangler is not supposed to have. Even the JK is far too techno for it's own good. However, at least with the JL now out, the prices will drop on the JKs and they will become more affordable to those of us on actual middle class, suburban dweller budgets. So there is that to look forward to.
Great video! Those lockers sure add a lot of benefits to off roading. Have Tommy put in a lunch box locker in the rear since theyre so cheap. Hope you wring the hell out of that new Rubicon while you have it!
I would never put a lunchbox locker in the rear. That type of locker locks up when torque is applied so you'd be locked at all times unless your foot was off the gas. They work great in the front because they only engage in 4WD,
I bought a 2021 willys model with the 2.0 turbo and really like it. So far from what I’ve seen they just added the aftermarket accessories into the factory package. The hurricane 4 cylinder is a little beast also. At the end of the day they are jeeps one fancy from start and one with more open ideas that are endless.
Been a fan for awhile but i must say that Tommy is quickly becoming one of my favorites, he has YOUTH on his side LOL. Ok now for my obligatory gripe. I would love to side by side our first run 07 JK 2 door with my first run 18 JL 2 door. But alas Jeep has kept me waiting for what will more than likely be the shortest run of 2018 vehicles ever, the 2 door! Mines been ordered since Feb 1st. And since FCA does not seem to mind screwing with us and giving us nearly useless information on delivery i will continue my crusade of negative comments. FCA has not met my expectations at all.
I'd be happy with just delivery, chances of me ever taking it back to the dealer even for warranty work is slim. I fix my own shit and being a jeep im sure ill be wrenching. I am happy all the R & D was done before the FCA took over.
Oh believe me we’re on it working 6-7 days a week 10 hour days. Now that the jk is done we should be able to build faster since most of our suppliers will be able to keep up (Dana)
well ive heard that there were delays for parts, this is the first i heard about Dana, i have a soft top too, and i understand they are not starting till mid month?
You guys need to branch out to some harder trails, Pennsylvania Gulch and Switzerland Trail are way to mild for those vehicles. Try Middle St. Vrain if you want to stay close to Boulder, although it usually does not open until the end of June.
they don't own the rubicon, though. i think subaru blacklisted TFL for years because of a damaged vehicle. that would suck if jeep did the same after returning a dented rubicon.
Tommy, did you consider regearing your JK to 4.56 (or even 4.88 since you have manual, 35s and doing actual offroad)? This would be one of the best mods one could do to a JK hands down!
Nice video. I was milling around in my head everything you guys talked about. Settled on a '18 JK Recon. Had everything I needed, nothing I didn't. And it was much cheaper with the current discounts than a similar JL. Both awesome rigs though. I look forward to more videos. Here is an idea, if you want. Do a tow test on the JK and JL. How well do those tow up the Ike? I'd love to see that, as many Jeepers tow campers and such.
I love the father and son reviews. The best part of the video was the end and Roman’s interpretations of other intros but you missed one. “Thiiiiiisss is the 2018 Jeep Rubicon Wrangler...”
I opted for a '17 loaded up Rubicon over a JL, because of the $10k price difference. The JL's are great, but the JK has had all of its bugs worked out, and it has a much stronger aftermarket. Will be a while before the JL has the same aftermarket support. Oh, the Johnny Lieberman imitation at the end wasn't half bad :P
Mid trim JL sports are going for the same price as my fully loaded JKU Rubicon. JL Rubicons are going for 10-15k more than my JK costs. JL's are better, but they arent THAT MUCH better.
He made the point of saying his JK has had those 10 years to work the flaws out of them. The JLs are new. We still don’t know their flaws yet. Time will tell.
Gi I have been in and driven a JL. They aren’t quieter, their driving feel is roughly the same, the interior and nav system is a lot better, but it’s not worth the price difference. And there is a lot more to reliability than just the engine. It always take 1-2 model years to work out the bigger issues with production. If the price was the same, I would say go JL, but at the time JKs were much cheaper. Plus the after market for JKs is way better currently. If I do trade this JKU in, it will be for a Gladiator.
Why did you switch the lockers on at the start of the trail? You only need to engage lockers when you approach a hard obstacle then turn them off once traversed.
hey TFL crew, can you guys get a ROXOR and do gold mine hill and offroad comparisons with jl, jk, tj, yj etc. I for one will eat that content up! Great work guys! cheers!
that's like tying an arm behind your back in a sparring match to make it fair. all it proves is that in order to make things competitive one has to be handicapped.
Need more Jeep videos! Loved the review and opinions. I have a JLUR with the Mopar 2” lift with 2.5” Fox shocks, 35” K02s with KMC XD832 wheels and absolutely love it.
I got luck only one model was left for JK rubicon which I grabbed on discount price 10 k less than JL rubicon, I was impressed by JL because of it looks but my objective was to get axel locks and the price, I see lot of UA-cam blog diverting customers toward JL , I understand it’s pure marketing
"If you are going to do any hardcore offroading, get the rubicon, it's more expensive but you get XYZ..." Absolutely not. A stock Rubicon is fine for easy to moderate offroading. if you want to do real hardcore offroading you will be ditching those stock axles all together so that you can run 37+ tires. You will also rip the entire stock suspension out so that you can have longer control arms with higher travel springs and shocks for extra flex. Every Rubicon owner I've ever wheeled with has pulled the electronic sway bar disconnect out (usually because it stopped working) and replaced it with the Currie Antirock sway bar. The ONLY benefit to getting the rubicon is for the 4:1 ratio transfer case rather than the 2.72:1 that comes in the other models. However for the price difference you could just buy the 4:1 case or some other t-case with a similar ratio and still save a lot of money. In short, if you want to do some real offroading/rock crawling you would be better off getting a base model like the sport or sahara, then building it up yourself with aftermarket parts which are FAR superior to stock Rubicon parts. P.S. Ditch the manual transmission. They suck for real off roading. When you have your jeep at a 75 degree angle on a hill and you need to get moving and you can't let it roll back or you'll be on your roof, no amount of heel-toe magic or old school grit is going to save you in that situation. And no matter how good you are with a clutch you WILL burn up your clutch while playing in the rocks. Don't even give me that "manuals are better" or "manuals are more fun" nonsense. They aren't. you will NEVER shift as smooth as an automatic, you will NEVER have the hill control of an automatic, and automatics are stronger.
Manual Wranglers work fine offroad. Crank the starter while in gear. You might have to toggle something or remove a fuse, but YJs start in gear...uphill.
@@KurNorock On what? The starter? The clutch? I never had to replace the clutch on my YJ, and I used that Jeep for towing. The starter lasted over 100K miles and 10yrs+ of Chicago Winters. It was cheap and easy to replace, and some people just rebuild them for even cheaper. If you're comfortable with stick and your gearing is good, crawling with a manual trans isn't rocket surgery.
@@RKmndo Exactly. IF your gearing is good. But how many people have "good" gearing? How much of an expense is that? Most 4x4s these days are lucky to get a 2:1 or 2.73:1 low range and none of them have a "granny gear" anymore. Not to mention those 3.10 and even 2.90 diff ratios. Sure, IF you can keep your forward momentum, any tranny will do. But the moment you hit a rock or crevice and the wheel stops turning, so does your engine. And yes, trying to use your starter motor to make your 4000+ pound jeep climb a steep hill is bad for your starter. Obviously. That is so far beyond its application. Not only do you risk burning the starter up, you also risk breaking teeth off your flywheel. And sure, a starter might not be THAT expensive, but it is still $150 you didn't have to spend, and if it craps out while you are climbing that ledge, causing you to roll over onto your lid, that is just more expense. Hell, even if it craps out and you don't roll, the odds that you can push start your rig in a rock garden are slim to none. Now you are that guy, holding up the group because you were doing stupid shit, and somebody has to tow you to some flat land, or possibly, all the way back out the trail ruining their day too. And don't even get me started on the toll you are taking on your battery.
Looked at a 2015 Lifted Jeep Sahara Unlimited for Sale. Runs well and clean except for the rust underneath the ride. Rust everywhere on the frame. Saw two small areas where rust has eaten through. Is this normal? Should I stay away from the purchase? Thanks
Great vid. A question- @15:32- the new Jeep rolling over the camera-there appears to be NO armour underneath...I thought, and you guys said, they come with under carriage plating. Do they or don’t they?
Have any TFL staff bought themselves a personal JL yet? You guys have been giving great coverage on them. Once I heard of the upcoming JL I waited on buying a JK. Now i'll get the reward for waiting!
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet or not but my JKU Rubicon came with 4.10s, front and rear lockers and electric sway bar disconnects all stock. You don't need to get the JL to get those features.
I'm always impressed with Rubicons but also slightly underwhelmed by them. They do these intense trails stock off the showroom floor but then it's like, it should. It's the ultimate jeep produced currently, the literal top of the line for the brand and model! These trails should be the baseline for Rubicon.
The suspension in the JK is much better. That new JL doesn't flex nearly as well. Also doing an axle swap on a JK isn't terrible. You could go really big and put Currie Dana 60s under it for 13K, sure, but for 35s, a set of locked up Dana 44s with 4:10s is plenty. You could always find a junkyard Rubicon and pull the axles and the control box. I've seen dudes do it in their driveway for under 4K.
I have owned three Wranglers, my brother has owned 3 wranglers, our pop a wrangler and a cherokee and a CJ, and our grandpop a willys. Sadly, those days are over. Jeep has priced themselves right out of our market.
Want to see you guys review a built JL vs a bone stock JL or a ride with a JL, JK, TJ, YJ, and CJ all built to relatively the same level (same size tires, lockers [or no lockers] across the board). A new vs old vs older vs older vs older. Would be rad.
Hard to call it a comparison when one has lockers, one doesn't and that's just a trim comparison. They also have very different gearing, aside from the 4.10 to 3.73 the low range on the sport is 2.72 vs the 4.0 in the rubi
Your reviews are always outstanding. I realize you have to test what you have access to at the time. To be Totally equal I would think it would be JK Rubicon against JL Rubicon. With that being said again another outstanding review. Keep up the great work.😎❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️
Excellent video! I think the references to low gear ratio were referring to the 2ND gear acting like a really low gear (like a 1) because you get a higher gear ratio with the lower gears but I can understand if someone mispeaks and says that a 1st or 2nd gear has a low ratio just because it's easy to slip the tongue but usually 1st and 2nd gears have a high gear ratio
You guys NEED to look at the new (to the U.S.) “side by side” by Mahindra, the “Roxor” - it’s an epic mashup of a brand new CJ2a, CJ3a, and CJ7...and I would venture to say its more “Jeep” than the JK or the JL!!!
Why is the new MOAB a “higher” grade than the Rubi ? It seems the MOAB, other than the 33” wheels, is a 2016 75th Anniversary Edition (Sahara with Trak-Lok rear diff), no Tru-Lok or sway bar disconnect.
If Tommy wants some cheap traction, look into Detroit TruTracs. I've had them in mine for a couple years and I love them. Also the Centerforce clutch and flywheel is much better than the stock one. Both on and off-road but keep a spare clutch slave cylinder handy. I've heard they can have a shorter life span with that clutch. Mine puked its guts out about a year after the install with about 58,000 miles on the old one.

Jeep Rubicon truck vs ZR2. Now that would be a great episode. I am however biased since I currently own a ZR2 gasser. I traded in my Jeep for the ZR2. Couldn’t be happier but I loved my Jeep too.
Great video! And to do this as a father and son video, is heartwarming.
I'm with Roman. The replacement for my JKUR will be a JTR. I also agree with Tommy that the JL sounds way better.
Perfect timing! I'm deciding between a 2018 JKU or 2018 JLU this week!
So what did you end up with?
Same here. Which did you get?
I love Pennsylvania gulch! Taking a motorcycle through there is a fun challenge. The jeeps make it look easy though...
The new Jeep looks good. I'm just glad they figured out a way to get Jeeps to be EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE. Seriously though, I love the new Rubi
It has a locking dif! Thanks for the help! Going back up in a zr2 Thursday!
brad soyak Oh whoops haha! have fun!
My JK build is very similar. I just put an aussie locker in and it can run with the rubis all day now
Great vid as always. Would like to see you guys do a detail video about all the differences between the jk and jl
Land Rover guy wins the day on this video. First time sticking it in and that angle. 🤣🙌
Two friends of mine went to buy a new JL... saw the price and bought TRD Pro 4Runners.
toyota is for men, jeep is for women
Did they buy the hard top or soft top TRD Pro 4Runners.?
manbeastx69 Toyota doesn't have anything soft. We like to keep things tightly bolted together to prevent the Jeep tow pit stops on highway.
Don't hate because Toyota cant innovate, its a Jeep thing. At least Toyota tried with the FJ Cruiser but you still have the Rav 4.....Fahrvergnügen
But then again u guys who like 4 runners are watching Jeep videos wtf?
Jeep is a little behind on schedule and the 2 doors we just started making about 2 weeks ago
well we are rooting for you then! build, build, build!
Me too, waiting for the JT. ...hope it'll be over the top cool.
One of my favorite videos you have posted recently. Keep it up!
Great video! taking my jeep tj out on yankee hill today.
Tommy, did you consider regearing your JK to 4.56 (or even 4.88 since you have manual, 35s and doing actual offroad)? This would be one of the best mods one could do to a JK hands down!
Awesome!!! Loved it. Welcome back Tommy!! Such a hard choice but either way you win if you enjoy the ride.
The JK looks really good. I like It more than the JL. The JL looks great too.
Have a 12' JK that I will never give up...☺
I love the father and son reviews. The best part of the video was the end and Roman’s interpretations of other intros but you missed one. “Thiiiiiisss is the 2018 Jeep Rubicon Wrangler...”
"And for more thoughts on the JL Rubicon, head over to my blog on..."
Stuka87 you bought a brand new 10 yr old model...when the new one just came out. Not smart.
Mid trim JL sports are going for the same price as my fully loaded JKU Rubicon. JL Rubicons are going for 10-15k more than my JK costs. JL's are better, but they arent THAT MUCH better.
you can get a 2018 Jk Rubicon for the same price as a 2018 Sport (not sport S) JL.
Great work guys! cheers!
Haha... Are you kidding me. Not even the same league. And if anything you'd want to compare it to a CJ7. But I assure you, no contest. Just saying.
Can't wait to see how the Jeep pickup truck turns out. It is coming, right?
Next April
it wont be like the old j10
True that!! That JK is awesome!! I want one!
It's unfair that you use the lockers on the Rubicon. Should have been open diff on both to make it similar to compare.
that's like tying an arm behind your back in a sparring match to make it fair. all it proves is that in order to make things competitive one has to be handicapped.
Need more Jeep videos! Loved the review and opinions. I have a JLUR with the Mopar 2” lift with 2.5” Fox shocks, 35” K02s with KMC XD832 wheels and absolutely love it.
Since they are both soft tops, is there a difference in the amount of wind noise when you're driving down the road (with the tops on)?
I got luck only one model was left for JK rubicon which I grabbed on discount price 10 k less than JL rubicon, I was impressed by JL because of it looks but my objective was to get axel locks and the price, I see lot of UA-cam blog diverting customers toward JL , I understand it’s pure marketing
Hey TFL do you think my 01 4Runner 4x4 with a rear diff lock could make it up that?
Holy hell you tripped me out with the straight pipes intro hahaha
Chase C. Who?
"If you are going to do any hardcore offroading, get the rubicon, it's more expensive but you get XYZ..."
Absolutely not.
@@RKmndo Yeah, because that's not going to cause unnecessary wear and tear..
I love the little StraightPipes reference :)
Looked at a 2015 Lifted Jeep Sahara Unlimited for Sale. Runs well and clean except for the rust underneath the ride. Rust everywhere on the frame. Saw two small areas where rust has eaten through. Is this normal? Should I stay away from the purchase? Thanks
Did they make the JL longer or did they just make the back window larger it's hard to tell just by looking at it
Great vid. A question- @15:32- the new Jeep rolling over the camera-there appears to be NO armour underneath...I thought, and you guys said, they come with under carriage plating. Do they or don’t they?
I like the mechanical side of the jk, but I like the looks of the jl
the straight pipes intro was absolutely hilarious
What is reliability like on jeeps?
You don’t need a rubicon for anything these guys do.
Knee and head room change at all between the two?
What size and brand on the wheels and tires on the JK?
The last segment of the video was great...pretty funny mimicking the "other" guys.
What 2way radio is Tommy using, looks like maybe a 2 meter.
I would love the truck but cant afford it. Could you please review the truck conversion options for the JK. Is the mopar kit still available?
JK looks the best.
Did Tommy say.... Bestop soft top "trektop" NX black Twill ?
i wanna buy Tommy's JK now... and i have to admit i have JLUR and love it; but his JK looks BADASS!
Your reviews are always outstanding. I realize you have to test what you have access to at the time. To be Totally equal I would think it would be JK Rubicon against JL Rubicon. With that being said again another outstanding review. Keep up the great work.😎❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️
great video! But why did you have the axles locked on that easy of surface and while turning?
Excellent video! I think the references to low gear ratio were referring to the 2ND gear acting like a really low gear (like a 1) because you get a higher gear ratio with the lower gears but I can understand if someone mispeaks and says that a 1st or 2nd gear has a low ratio just because it's easy to slip the tongue but usually 1st and 2nd gears have a high gear ratio
Great info .... trail looks good.... can’t see too many vehicles being tested on it, a tad narrow.
I always do 35 to 38 psi on Hwy for tire pressure and around 22 off road. What do you recommend for the 35s? Great video thanks God bless.
Train Bennett 22 offroad... That's way too high. Go down to 15.
What size torx head disconnects the sway bars in the JK ?
You guys NEED to look at the new (to the U.S.) “side by side” by Mahindra, the “Roxor” - it’s an epic mashup of a brand new CJ2a, CJ3a, and CJ7...and I would venture to say its more “Jeep” than the JK or the JL!!!
I was expecting Roman at the end to say "THIIIIIS is a Jeep JL' like Doug
Why is the new MOAB a “higher” grade than the Rubi ? It seems the MOAB, other than the 33” wheels, is a 2016 75th Anniversary Edition (Sahara with Trak-Lok rear diff), no Tru-Lok or sway bar disconnect.
Land Rover master race confirmed. No one else has such advanced automatic chassis lubrication systems.
I wonder how it costs to replace that JL front turn signal? I’m thinking 2nd gen JK Rubicon.
