    I went up this trail today in my 2004 Rubicon, 4" lift, 33" tires. Let me just say that the trail looks WAY SCARIER in person! It's just impossible to show how steep and rocky it really is on camera. Super fun though!

      @Jacob Marx Most videos never do the trail justice, you need to shoot them at ground level to really show just how difficult they are. Even then, it doesn't compare to being there!
      The best generation of Jeep is the TJ. And your Rubicon is arguably the best Jeep ever made. I have an '05 TJ Rocky Mtn 4.0 with 2" Old Man Emu coils on 32" KO2's, 3.73's, limited slip with the Dana 44 and it's been a highly capable off road animal since I built it three years ago. But looking to do more challenging trails, which is why I'll be getting mud terrains and lockers in due time.
      Wish I lived in Colorado. That state is just an enormous playground for Jeeps.

Mine tjs regeared to 4:10 w 4in lift, Bilstein shocks, and 33s (soon going to 4.88 and 35s) and my approach angle and clearance is my only advance right now. It'd cost me a grand for ARB lockers and $2500 minimum for a 241 tcase that's in the rubis.. or hell over 3k if I go with the atlas 2

      @@kalebsummerville4406 depends? If the most it's going to ever see is fire roads... A sport S with quick disconnects and better tires will be enough. I chased an 04 Rubicon on 35's up a rock garden and I was in a s-10 ZR2 with 5" and 32's I had to pick better lines, and my wheel based helped me out a little. but none the less it was doable. and a new sport S stock would walk circles all over my old S-10.
      I've had my fill of trail riding.......the Renegade pulls me back, but the Sport S makes more sense for the money. especially on the resale side of things. Honestly, I could be just as happy with a Ram promaster base camp with a rack on the back for a Honda crf250.

      For 11k you can buy better parts compared to what Rubicon has, and you can cherry pick them to your needs. Front diff lock won't help that much, and you need to turn it off on descent anyway. I wouldn't count tyres as an extra, they waer out, just like brakes and oil and what not, you need to change them regularly.

    Great mash-up and choice of vehicles. The drone views are great. Now, after watching Tommy on the final leg when he was butting up against a large rock one asks if a front mounted camera be an aid to finding the best course? Obviously a spotter is the best, but even then a camera could show the best way to point the front wheels (in Tommy's case around that rock).

    • @TFLtruck

    • @Pepsiaddicto
      @Pepsiaddicto 8 років тому +3

      I think some BFG tires would have given the traction required for the renegade to get up that hill. I have KO2s on my trailhawk, and it makes a big difference.

    • @donaldweber7636
      @donaldweber7636 8 років тому +4

      The Renegade, even the Trailhawk, has no low range. All the "low range" button does is keep the transmission in first gear, which gives it a ~20:1 crawl ratio. (Under normal driving conditions, the Trailhawk Renegade starts off in second gear)
      What kills the Renegade is gearing and articulation. Not much gearing, pretty much no articulation. It uses the same brake lock system as the Wrangler.
      I have a Renegade, but not the Trailhawk version. Is a a good all wheel drive commuter and drives really well on longer trips. 80 mph at less than 2000 rpm. It can only do light offroading as it doesn't even have a spare tire.

    • @Pepsiaddicto
      @Pepsiaddicto 8 років тому +4

      +Donald Weber Trailhawk has a full sized spare in the back. With a 1.5" lift it actually has more ground clearance and better angles than a stock Wrangler. Not saying that it's as capable. You're right that the gearing could be a lot better, but I've seen the TH do things you wouldn't expect it to be able to do.

    dont forget a lot has to do with the driver and the tires. i have a 2015 JK 4 door and the most a Rubicon dose is make it easier with the lockers and the tires. and the air down is a good part of it too. i bet the Renegade could of made it farther if it was aired down and gave it a little bit more. • @NickSharpe
      @NickSharpe 8 років тому +3

      REALLY? I have gotten myself out of the same situ (steep loose rocky) in many 4x4 vehicles using deflate as a recovery method. If I wasn't too lazy, I woulda aired down to 12 before hitting the trail and not get stuck. So I just bought an ARB deflater - makes it easier. (new KO2s have a lot of print on the sidewall, somethin' to read while you sit there...)
      If you wanna prove your point to us doubters, then do airdown to recover the Fiat - if that doesnt work, at least you'll have the attempt on video, and a restored (tho minimal) faith in your vids.
      Most of us already know the Ruby can do that stuff and more.

    • @mdingle11
      @mdingle11 7 років тому +2

      The Fast Lane Truck your comment here has made me lose faith in anything you guys say. airing down your tires makes a huge difference. especially when navigating rocky and sandy terrain. it provides a wider footprint and allows the tires to mold to the shape of the rocks and "grab" them as apposed to trying to drive on top of them. when my rig goes off road the tires go down to 10 psi without bead locks and I don't have a problem.

    Hey guys, great video! Probably my favourite video so far. I really appreciate the no nonsense, no BS feel of this. All three vehicles are making the attempt, and there's no pussyfooting around the strengths and weaknesses of the bunch.
    I know I'm that guy in every damn Jeep video, but I do have a minor correction. The Renegade Trailhawk actually doesn't have "low range gearing" as stated in the video. When "4 low" is engaged, the electronic system merely locks the vehicle to first gear and locks the centre differential. The Trailhawk does have lower standard gearing than the other Renegade models, but "4 low" is not a true low range, nor does it have a transfer case.
    Keep up the good work, gentlemen.

    The renegade should have made it up the trail, it is more driver error with Andre than the jeep, it has the electronic nannies to help not hurt the jeep, the driver must work around the system to get up loose gravely surfaces like the trail

    • @TFLtruck
      @TFLtruck  8 років тому +14

      +Craig Haynes FYI: that's completely wrong. The Jeep Renegade's terrain management cuts power when there's no traction and there's nothing any driver can do. We have thousands of miles of off-road experience in every off road vehicle made. How many Renegades have you taken off-road?

    • @AUSSIEGARAGE_YT
      @AUSSIEGARAGE_YT 8 років тому +4

      +The Fast Lane Truck I've never driven a renegade, however I do know that the driver makes the difference off road, I'm not saying that Andre can't drive, I'm saying that the right amount of throttle input and braking can make an open differential vehicle (such as the renegade trailhawk) perform very well through areas where it lifts tires, I myself wheel an open diff 1999 ram 1500, and although it has much more flex than the renegade does, i do tripod it and lift the wheels occasionally, and when I do I am able to drive through it with a little skill and the right amount of braking. the terrain management system in the renegade is designed so that if you are in that kind of situation it won't just spin the tire and risk breakage, however lighter throttle response (when Andre said that he was giving it the beans and the system was cutting power) would alleviate the system's actions making the manual skills of the driver more effective. I have wheeled vehicles with systems similar to that in the renegade and the driver cannot rely solely on the electronics to do the work for them.

      Thanks for the reply Craig. But both Roman and Andre tried to get the Jeep up the hill with no luck. We've encountered this problem before on the original Cliffhanger: ua-cam.com/video/hrdb_UVTa20/v-deo.html Modern cars are all drive and steer by wire. The driver has no direct input into the throttle or the steering. You can't game or fool the algorithm. The new systems are set-up to cut power to keep the vehicle from damaging itself. There's no amount of driver skill that can convince the computer to potential burn out the transmission or CVT in the case of the Subaru. Most people never encounter this issue because they don't test the vehicle in these type of situation, but that's our job. It would thoughtful of you to consider the amount of experience we have taking cars off-road. You are of course welcome to armchair the video but unless you've taken hundreds of vehicles off-road like we have it would be refreshing for you to acknowledge that we have valuable experience. Please be assured that we pushed as hard as possible to get the Jeep up the hill without damaging it.

    Great video and comparison TFL. I have a 2010 JK Sport two door. Should it also have the 3.73 rear axle with limited slip? I couldn’t find any number on it. Thanks!

    well I almost rolled out of the dealership in a 2016 JKU Rubicon mostly loaded - same blue as that rubicon. Wife just said she didnt need the lockers, etc as she is not going rock crawling. So we ended up getting the JKU Sahara fully loaded. Been on the beach and not a bad rig so far. For insane stuff ill just take my 78 k20 on 40's and detroits out...

    If this was anywhere near me, within a 4-5 hour drive I'd give this a shot asap in my Cherokee Trailhawk. I've got a mild lift and BFG KO2's on which when combined with true low ranger and a rear locker should make this doable no problem.

    Cool new tests. It will be very interesting to see how other new vehicles do. I am glad that they used a Jeep Rubicon as the benchmark for such a rocky test. My one pointer... air down the tires. That's not the kind of wheeling you want to be doing at full pressure because if you puncture a tire you are a long ways from a level surface to change said tire. Airing down will help protect the tire and improves traction tremendously. It looked at though the little Renegade Trail Hawk would have made it to the top if the tires had been dropped to around 15-20 psi.

    Does the 2007 wrangler 3.8 have the brake lock differential system? How would you know it's been engaged or working?

    I actually drove this trail today. I will post a video when I get the time and know how. Don't need momentum. I just crawled up it in first gear low range (5 speed manual) with barely any throttle. I was in full cheat mode though. Tires at 15 psi and the sway bar disconnected. No lockers though.

      Airing down is key. At one point you can see the sport has about an inch wide strip of tire on a rock and not much more in length.

    Does anyone know if the new Wranglers with the 3.6 are reliable, I'm thinking of trading in my old TJ Sahara for a 4 door Wrangler but I'm hesitant because I heard the the heads crack on the drivers side.
