  • New Zealand is famous for a lot of things... having tons of sheep, Lord of the Rings, the All Blacks (our national rugby team) just to name a few.
    NZ is also well known for its outstanding natural beauty but there are a ton of interesting and random fun facts about Aotearoa too (the Maori name for New Zealand) which we aim to share with this list we've compiled.
    Having grown up and lived in NZ almost our entire lives, we've put together this list of random things which we think may surprise those who aren't so familiar with New Zealand. Some of it comes from friends, family and people we've worked with over the years who came from other countries and shared what they found confusing, funny or surprising about NZ while a few facts were newly discovered by us in more recent times.
    Hope you enjoy this list and you might also like to check out:

    Both of you need to stand up and take a bow for being TRUE kiwis ! Honestly, this was such an enjoyable upload because both of you really GET IT ! For any folks overseas watching this - this is pretty much your template for an introduction to the Kiwi way of life. Not sure how you two came up with this episode, but a big ups to you both. Had to chuckle at your food section,as I know that is Peters favourite hobby - hehe...and finally - Yen,what a legend pronouncing the world's longest name (saw the original upload) but to do it off the cuff as you did - bravo.

      Thanks Rob 😁💪 appreciate the feedback on the video. It was a fun one to make cause it's all stuff that is so normal to us but would be pretty different from non kiwis looking at us. Figured it was the perfect time to put together while Auckland was getting all the down pours hahaha.

    Most surprising: Yen still remembering and saying “Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu” (seemed even faster this go around) 🤯🤯🤯… holy crap…that was sweet as… aye..
    …dang, skimming the water on the bungee jumping…😵😵😵‍💫 Are you supposed get that close to the water??

    nice to catch up on clips of your trips and as only a guy has visited your amazing country i like rob below is spot on, as an english guy at the age of 73 i have read and looked at many things over the years about new zealand , but i was not prepared for the wow factor when i arrived, every corner i drove around was a photo shoot, amazing.and peter and yen were so kind to meet me and have lunch with me , i can tell everyone that they are exactly as they are on the videos two fantastic down to earth guys trust me they really are, and although they are both of asian descent they very well represent the kiwis that i had the pleasure to meet, one of the most memorable holidays of my life and as peter and yen both know i am certainly well traveled . hence god willing my return soon, and peter gotta say the bungy jump made me chuckle again . you are much braver than me although i did have a go on the zip wire on whakiki island , loved every moment hahaha, again another brilliant video well presented by two very nice people . take care looking forward to the next one whenever that may be .thanks

    Your electricity is 240. Here in Canada we're at 120. A lot of your language is British based and pronounced. My brother moved from Canada to Auckland in 2019. He now says "ger-ridge" instead of "gar-rage". "Lift" as apposed to "elevator". "Lorry" instead of "truck". His water for his rental house is collected from the roof instead of a municipal water system. The house does not have central heating or air conditioning like Canada. He has mini splits in a few rooms. Those are some differences, we've noticed.

    We have three official languages in NZ! English, Maori and sigh language.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  Рік тому

      Though English is by far the most commonly used and predominant language in NZ, interestingly only Maori and NZ Sign Language have official legislative/legal status:
      www.parliament.nz/en/get-involved/features/have-you-seen-parliament-s-multilingual-resources/
      www.ethniccommunities.govt.nz/resources-2/our-languages-o-tatou-reo/
      There was a bill trying to get passed a few years ago to make English official too but not sure where that's ended up since it's already the defacto official language:
      i.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/101497027/analysis-why-english-does-not-need-to-be-made-an-official-language
      So yep, by all means English is definitely the most widely used in NZ and the defacto official language but official legislation-wise it's Maori and Sign Language which surprises most people understandably 🙂

      Photography and drumming are two awesome interests and skills 🙂 it's great when you can make a bit from the things you enjoy and love doing ay. Thank you for sharing your story. A different upbringing to the norm indeed but those different experiences in life are often character and strength building 👍 That is a nice saying.. it makes sense and resonates for sure. It makes me think of a saying that I like which is on a similar vein (though a little different) and that's "being brave doesn't mean not being scared, it means in moments of fear, going on anyway". Go after what you love we say.. life is too short and precious to be living anyone else's dreams but your own and you can't let fear get in your way 🙂
