The story behind the Macbeth superstition is, that if s play failed, you could always put up Macbeth which always was a succes, therefore mentioning Macbeth was predicting failure .

      Theres a few 'origins'
      1. The original performance was cursed by real witches angered at their portrayal.
      2. The original run in 1606 was beset by theatre accidents.
      3. The Astor Place Riot in New York in 1849, in those days most actors in the US were British and there was a rivalry between two famous actors, one British and one American. During the first day of a thee day run of Macbeth fans of the american actor bought hundreds of tickets then pelted the British actor with rotten fruit when on stage and yelled insults. He quit but New York high society persuaded him to stay on. During the second night the Police chief said he didnt have enough manpower to quell a riot if one occurred due to cuts and so 350 soldiers were mobilised for security adding to 250 police. 10,000 including fans of both actors but most who had been invited by pamphlet to an anti-British riot by the organiser of the first days disorder turned up at the theatre and tried to enter putting the theatre audience under siege. After the play finished the British actor donned a disguise and slipped out but the Police thought they had lost control of the situation and called the army into action. The army opened fire on the rioters (mostly poor Irish) killing between 22-31 and injuring 48 while 50-70 policemen and 141 soldiers were injured. The next day at a protest rally outside City Hall against the authorities violence by thousands a young boy was killed, in anger the protesters attacked the police again but were quickly subdued. New York high society applauded the violent suppression of the working class as evidence that capitalism was safe in the US from the poison of socialists and that it was a good advert to attract capital investment to the city.
      4. As mentioned the fact that theatre companies often fell back on Macbeth as a reliable earner.
      5. In 1948 during a run in Stratford an actress portraying a sleep walker, with her eyes closed walked off stage and fell 15ft into the orchestra pit. The night before she had ridiculed the curse to a journalist.

The actors are actually stars of an earlier generation of comedy performers. Hugh Paddick was teamed with Kenneth Williams as the camp pairing 'Julian and Sandy' in innuendo-laden 1960s radio comedy 'Round the Horne'. While Ken Connor was a familiar face in the long-running 'Carry On...' film comedy series (even starring in the first entry back in 1958). By the 1980s he was getting sitcom roles in the likes of 'Allo 'Allo and Hi-De-Di.

"I imagine the French Revolution scared the British..."
We'd already had our revolution, more than a hundred years earlier. The English Civil War ended with King Charles I being beheaded and for some years we were ruled by Oliver Cromwell who took the title Lord Protector. Sadly, he proved to be no less tyrannical than a king (arguably more so!), and eventually the monarchy was restored. Although Cromwell became a hated figure after his death, he was a great inspiration to the French revolutionaries.
But to your point, many in England initially supported the Revolution which they saw as potentially leading to a fairer society. However, as events became more violent, support waned, and fears that it could be repeated here and that England could be plunged into another civil war were very real.

If you like comedies about acting, check out David Mitchell in the BBC sitcom "Upstart Crow" he plays Shakespear in the 1600s. There are clips on YT,and maybe on the BBC Iplayer.

The two actors were played by Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Connor, they'd both had massive acting careers on stage, screen, and radio and would have still been very well known at the time this was originally shown albeit they were at the end of their careers. Paddick is probably most famous for his performances in the radio show Round the Horne with Kenneth Horne, and Connor was a stalwort of the Carry On films, as well as being in 'Allo 'Allo later.

I don't think the British royalty would have been too worried, the UK had already had the "Glorious revolution" almost 2 centuries earlier and killed their King
At this point in time the Royal family was well under control of Parliament

The Glorious Revolution was in 1688 and was mostly bloodless, and King James II wasn’t killed but deposed. You’re thinking of the Civil War, which started in 1642 and ended up with King Charles I being executed.

I'd forgotten Ben Elton turns up in it (chucking the bomb). Nothing like one of the writers getting involved. And actually more subtle than some of his political polemics of the time.

Little known fact, is Rowan never wore a wig for the entire Blackadder series!
Ps you can cure a cold by using Q-tips to rub iodine (cream version is less messy) inside each nasal passageway and immediately you'll start to feel great! More practical to do, just before bedtime.
Enjoying your reactions and thanks for the laughs! 😊

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow; creeps in this pretty pace from day to day till the last syllable of recorded time. And all our yesterday's have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle. Life is but a walkng shadow, a poor player that stuts and frets his hour upon the stage until he is heard of no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury; signifying nothing.
Yes I really had to memorise that aa an English student in secondary school.

Well after the French revolution Europe entered the revolutionary period. This period lasted 1745 to 1848. But some would argue it lasted until the death of Czar Nicolas of Russia 🇷🇺 and the Russian Revolution. Monarchies we’re destroyed all across Europe leaving only 12 left standing. And yes the British royal family were Sxxx scared 😱 being of German decent during WW1 they were nearly removed for obvious reasons. There name was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. They changed there name to Windsor and amazingly the name change worked

The two 'actors' in this had long and illustrious careers, Kenneth Connor was a mainstay of most of the Carry on films and Hugh Paddick first found fame with Kenneth Williams as Julian & Sandy on a radio show in the 60s when they spoke 'Polari' a secret language used by gay men, its been reported the bosses at the BBC had no idea what was going on, as the show (Round the Horne) was both a big hit and considered safe for a family audience

Lots of stories about the Macbeth curse origin, including the 1st production's Lady Macbeth dying suddenly and Shakespeare having to take the part. Also, real daggers being swapped for the stage props. The actor Diana Wynyard fell off the stage in Stratford’s 1948 production during the sleep walking scene as she decided to do it with her eyes closed. Apparently, the night before she had told a reporter that she thought the curse was ridiculous.A few sources reference that she ended up "plunging 15 feet into the pit when she walked off the stage in the sleepwalking scene." She was not seriously hurt though.

  • @seijika46
    @seijika46 Місяць тому

The French Revolution scared all European royals - hence their desperation to crush it, forming coalition after coalition until it (and its Napoleonic successor) was finally crushed. (The last big regicide was Cromwell killing Charles I in England in the previous century and it did not end well for anyone concerned.) The later 'July Revolution' in 1830s France was more akin to the English/British 'Glorious Revolution' in that it was more of a popular coup in favour of replacing an absolute monarch with a constitutional one and was thus deemed fine. The one in 1848 was rather more rough and spread across the continent, sending European monarchies into another panic, only to once again end up with an Emperor Napoleon who was theoretically constitutional. After he fell, there was a short-lived socialist commune in Paris which was then crushed by a new republic, only for that republic to fall after Hitler's invasion and the one that came after that ended up falling to a military junta which led to France's current government - the Fifth Republic, by which point there aren't many European monarchies left to care. (Who knows when the next revolution will happen to topple that one, and whether it'll worry the rest of Europe again.)

This always reminds me of the Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui By Bertolt Brecht (1941). It's the story of a Chicago gangster who hires a Shakespearean actor to teach him how to walk and talk in an authoritative manner with the same hilarious results, Well worth a watch even if you don't review it.

The English aristocracy and public welcomed the French Revolution as we had been at war with France for centuries and hoped that the new regime would be more sympathetic to Britain and less willing to go to war with protestant countries, however when it became clear how brutal the executions were, the unfairness of the trial process, the execution of the King of France and the widespread terror then the British establishment turned against the idea and Britain started harbouring refugees and monarchists. The French felt betrayed by this and this probably did not help a further series of wars between France and Britain.

The difference between the French and the British is that when the French aren't happy with something, they do something about it. We British just tut, mutter "oh dear", and then let the political "elites" continue to walk all over us. So I think they're all feeling pretty safe over here.
