Do Re Mi - Man Overboard (official video)

- Absolute classic song from the iconic Australian rock band Do Re Mi, Man Overboard was a smash hit single in Australia, with a fair bit of controversy at the time surrounding the lyrical content.
I swear to God Australia in the 80's produced some of the greatest music of all time, whether the world realises it or not.
I totally agree. Can listen to 80s oz rock all day long. Never gets tiring….
True that
The world STILL doesn't realise the 80s was by far the best decade of music anywhere. The US, naturally, was the only country that let it down, though even then a handful of decent acts did flourish, yet typically were not revered in their own home country, mainly because they were too intelligent and non-basic, something hard for the US to get, it's too high on its naff, mundane and duff power ballads, country and heavy metal nonsense, and slagdonna disco bullshit.
Without a doubt. X
@@kyachdistent1301 "slagdonna" 😅
Always loved this song. Makes me so happy.
Who knew KD Lang had a previous life as guitarist for DO Re Mi...
lol
👌🏻👍❤️
I try not to stand too close to myself
I try not to listen to the things I say
They say there's no such thing as self abuse
But you wonder how I can be trusted
If I'm finely tuned and well adjusted
Oh pity about you
Oh pity about me
More's the pity about her
Every time she comes inside you had to run
You had to run
You wish that crush would go away
You're not the only one
Squinting at broad daylight
Drumming up a conversation
Parsons brass is pealing appealing
Drumming up a congregation
Hands reaching for a glass of water
Dry socks and razor rash
Your shoes under my bed
Dandruff do, my cigarette ash
I've tried to play it open handed
I've tried to make a fist of this
Even when the questions are candid
My arrows miss
I've heard about your fragile ego
Your shield, your sword
What am I expected to do?
Shout man overboard?
Come around when I'm asleep
Roll around and try to wake me
That's alright you've got to go now
Words overtake me
Your pubic hairs are on my pillow
Your stubble rings the sink
Your words under my skin
Your table manners stink
I paddle in the things I love
You wallow in a swamp of trivia
In a vase with insincere I love yous
Next door's Camellias
I'm sick and tired of this position
Hatched underneath an arm
A crutch under stress
Your rudder when it's calm
I'm bored of staring at the ceiling
While you point out my flaws
I've watched the wallpaper peeling from slamming doors
You talk about penis envy
Your friends applaud
What am I expected to do?
Shout man overboard?
Come across to other girls
Look around and start a rumour
Jealous wife scenes raise a smile at parties
Like anal humour
Are you addicted to attention?
Do you do it for effect?
Your wit out of control
Misunderstood and henpecked
I know all the words anyway but thanks 4 putting em up
There is a nice use of marine terms in these lyrics.
I paddle in the things I love
You wallow in a swamp of trivia
A crutch under stress
Your rudder when it's calm
I go to gay bars just to avoid the kind of guy this is about.
epic poetry stands the test of time-and damn does this feel as relevant as ever! absolute power house of a song and if memory serves right it was a major hit.
Thanks for the lyrics I'd only caught half of them before
I was twenty when my friend Geoff Crosby asked me to be in this filmclip.
What an honor.
That's me at the Balaclava hotel.
Thats few seconds of footage I'm on film took horus
Fun times.
Thanks Debra you rock.
For me this is top 5 Australian songs of all time. Absolutely timeless! Still perfect
man was this outta the box when released in'85...the darkness & venom of this song hovered for days upon first hearing, an unforgettable, undeniable force of nature was Conway. the impact on a 17 yr old of the time was immense, this was blade back in the day
Still is !
Venom is the right word😂 shes terrifying with the power of that voice
Whispering insincere I love Yous should be made illegal.
This song nails my 20 marriage. Out of it long enough to be able to laugh. So perfectly written.
Four decades later and it's still wickedly, viciously relevant.
Saw them live, Tiffanys at Blacktown
Deb Conway still has one of the most powerful voacls this country has produced..desreves more recogmition💕
I used to go to Tiffanys myself!
I was a teenager, navigating the dating scene in Sydney, when this song came out. It struck my heart *immediately* ... I find it hilarious that the lyrics caused "controversy at the time", since they were nothing but "accurate" in their description of the icebergs in the water and the landmines in the field faced by young women of that era in the Lucky Country.
Edit: subscribed now, btw.
Hungry Boy, Bondi 1983- 1986. Best days.
The Lucky Country, run by second rate people who share it's luck.
A few little things. This is the Sydney of my memory, The 80's Sydney, always under construction - no human heart changes half as fast as a cities face - The garbage bags out on the street, after we have kicked the punters out and had our 3:00am staffies until the sun came up. Getting back home amongst the garbage, the spew, the blood and the, let's be generous, human debris. Secondly, the power of Conway's voice and that horrible asexuality period of the 80's. Finally, to those old, brave, brave men we see in this clip. It was filmed on ANZAC Day. Those old bastards, jolly and chubby as they might appear in this clip were, in their youth some of the hardest, bravest men in history. Salve and vale as they have probably passed over by now.. I just hope that upon their passing, some spotty-faced, soft-hands priest or minister warned the next world that a true warrior was about to impact upon it.
Judging by your description of the city, I'd hazard a guess that you worked at The Cross. The only thing missing was the working girls going home after shift change.
peace
Your comment is perfect. This is the Sydney I remember as well. Gritty, dirty and run down as soon as you looked away from the glitzy 1980s facade.
@@DavesModelWorkshop agree, but still wish I'd bought an inner city terrace next door to a pub back then....now?
@@Dickusification now if you had you would be a multi-millionaire. I wanted to buy a terrace in Balmain in 1990. It would be worth squillions now…
One of the great Australian songs of the time, and still sounds great. Deborah Conway is amazing, the sheer power in her voice gives me shivers. Wonderful stuff.
AussieMark909 How many times does this play on ur radio
Her voice chills me still, I was a teenager when this song came out, it just smacks you in the face.
Yeah, what a voice. Powerful is the right word
Her voice is amazing - and stage presence and edgy lyrics - The song cuts through today...after all these years. Takes me back to my youth and discovering 4zzz and listening to it sitting in a tree in my backyard - Climbing on the old busted Jaguar in the driveway at Coorparoo, Brisbane ...the same home where a 460 Squadron pilot had grown up. RIP John Whale
Oh my gosh Deborah Conway's voice!!
She nailed this!!
I never got to see this live.
What am I expected to do?
Controversial lyrics? Oh please. The kind of thing Kylie Minogue broke through with is offensive to an intelligent audience, something clearly lacking on its release, and most useful for her and all that followed!
Her voice, the drumming, the guitar and what else do you need ? Blood ? This song is perfect.
Well I'm still listening in 2020 :) but what sucks is I can't click like again!
Iconic Australian Song. No Chorus, Basically poetry set to music. Conway's voice so powerful but Helen Carter's bass line is just as good.
Helen Carter was Bon Scotts (AC/DC) girlfriend in the mid 70ies
@@UserUli what's the chances of a couple each with two first names.
Very well said Michael
This may be a song of the 80 's but I reckon it was about a certain type of man who was a teen during the 70's. One of the worst decades for trying to find a decent boyfriend. Those old codgers in the street were a part of the problem for women too. They influrmced the 70's teen boys. Thank goodness for the climb out of it into the 80's and beyond.
Best Australian song of the 80s (and there were many good ones to choose from). This is epic. Deb’s vocals, the guitar, the drums, those lyrics, the mood, the tone. The whole band is awesome and Deborah Conway is a fantastic musician who deserves so much more recognition.
still one of my favourite Aussie songs of all time.
Brilliant bass line, Helen Carter along with the amazing Deb Conway....shit hot rock
Hell yeah. That bass. Brilliant
Who else is here because they heard this song at the supermarket today?
I refused to leave until the song ended.
Curious: what supermarket was that? Haven't heard it on "Drakes IGA Radio" yet lol
Thank you for putting up good quality Do Re Mi clips. Deborah Conway is a great lyricist.
This song was filmed Anzac Day in Sydney CBD 1982
The lyrics read like a modern poem to urban angst, and repressed venom, petty squabbles of young love and utter boredom
Well said, indeed true 👍
Such a great song. In their eagerness to like this song, 10 people accidentally clicked on the thumbs down button.
RaffaPed 🛎👏🏻💯😂
Perforning Sunday the 28th At St Kilda Memo Hall.Im in Melbourne that weekend from Adelaide.Looking forward to seeing Deb and Willy perform..
Arguably the best female voice ever... And what a song! The congas, the guitar... WOW!!! I remember vividly buying the vynil, back in 1985.
Who's still listening in 2019!
Do you even have to _ask???_
I am.
Me!
Likewise. =)
Yup
What an absolute national treasure of a song from a great iconic Australian band. Sounds as relevant and cool even now
Sydney looked better back then tbh
Can taste Sydney in that clip! So 80’s Sydney....
Yeah, that's why it was made in Melbourne. the singer was from East St. Kilda.

This song works lyrically and musically. Timeless
Great song. Love Deb Conway.
Budget early 80s music video, looks live they were forming up for the ANZAC Day march. Its a poignant reminder that the WW2 guys are just about all gone.
This was so edgy and cool. Loved it then and now. Brilliant lyrics and music.
so good; love the lyrics, love Deb.
Still fresh as the day it was baked.
The filming is incredibile. I really loved the panning at 3.46. Great band too.
Absolute banger...
This band was part of my childhood
so much of that Sydney landscape in this video is gone now
- Darling Harbour railyards demolition in progress
- the final shots of the flats around Bondi how many of those have survived
Another song.. that you love at the time .. and probably don’t really appreciate, till you hear it 20 years later .. classic. ..
"Next doors' camellias..."
GAH! She got me.
Deborah Conway, the Aussie Boadicea of Modern Rock!!
Truly classic, angry song...Deborah Conway scares me with those lyrics and that voice!!! In a good way....
Deborah Conway = Tough Goddess! She makes one *proud* to be Australian!
Great track I had memorised the words better than the poetry I was reading at Uni!
music is poetry
Goose bumps still haven't gone down since 1985. This song is tattooed on my soul!
That voice. That bass x
Iconic Aussie singer and Actress, she also starred in the famous Australian cult movie, Running On Empty…..
She sang the theme to Sweet and Sour tv show as well
she should of been bigger she had a neat voice 😊👍❤
Brings attention to those of us experiencing abuse
Heard this on TRIPLE M the other day, cranked it up loud. Soooooo goooood!
Haven't heard it for donkeys years, in my favourites now.
I was growing up in NZ at the time and taped this off the TV. I think I must have worn out the old VHS replaying it over and over. What a voice.
Who knows the connection between Do Re Mi and The Takeaways? (I know, just asking who else does!)
Deb sang the Takeaways hit
Yep, Tracey Mann did no vocals. All Deb Conway.
Sweet & Sour

Fantastic song from a fantastic band. Last saw them support Simple Minds (1986?) and they blew the main act off the stage.
I remember this song from back when renting in Melbourne was affordable and you could (just) survive on the dole
Even Perth was a laugh in the 90s , you could get a decent place right in the city and if a few of you were sharing you'd still have 90% of your dole left every fortnight
Oh my God. Debbie Conway . Wow , those Australian childhood memories 😁
15 year old me was absolutely obsessed
wow hasn't this place changed! ( Sydney) great song.
While you point out my faults I watch the wallpaper peeling
Album keyboards were by Steve Hogarth who went on to be Marillion's vocalist.
I heard the 45rpm single of this accidentally played at 33rpm, (a lot slower), on a Melbourne community radio station. Played at that speed, l heard all the lyrics clearly. Wow! That's gotta be one of the best "fuck you" songs ever. You don't want to get on her bad side!
Am I the only person that noticed Mark Zuckerberg applauding at 2:19 😂
😂
Ah .., my child hood. Australia 😁
Man I haven't heard this song in years. Thanks for putting it up.
Still an incredible and powerful song nearly 40 years on, even if I do shift uncomfortably in my chair listening to some of those lyrics...
Powerful then, quite possibly more powerful now.
Such a talent, remember seeing her in running on empty but also later, so much respect for her as a muso.
So original for something which was so popular at the time. Usually the popular at that time (but not always) was not so original in sound and technique. Of course, there were many other arguably great original bands in that era who weren’t addressed with as much popularity (relatively speaking). The 80’s, an amazingly fruitful era for those who searched for it.
People have written a lot of love songs it’s refreshing hearing about reality I always loved this song
Ageless song, powerful vocals. Shit, I've run out of words
Hay and after we finish being naturally shit hot Oz let's dress up and play better midler
any mention of Pubic hair in the lyrics is bound to make God's policemen nervous
I saw and listened to Deborah Conway perform at the "Three Weeds" pub in Sydney over thirty years ago.
I am still recovering. Awesome.
Wasnt a 'smash hit' but was and is a brilliant song that earned respect in the day from those who comprehended quality art, and remains the case now. Pure class.
gee Anthony you're a bit harsh on the definition of 'smash', it was all over the radio in 1985, and peaked at #5 on the Australian national charts.....surely that qualifies as a smash?
haha I think youre being a bit harsh on me! Sung its praises to the sky and back. But fair enough, I didnt think it made the Top Ten, but there you go. I'm glad it did. Deserved international success. Still have the single, in very good shape.
:) that is true you did indeed, it's a wonderful song you're right.
Was quite big on community radio back in the day only because commercial radio didn't have the balls to play it! I know I played it quite a bit at the time.
It got plenty of commercial airtime in Perth on 96fm
80's Sydney. Hasn't it changed so much. Subtle things right down to the orange beer garden / bistro plastic chairs jolted my memory of the feel and flavours I think I was forgetting. The eastern suburbs unit's, the Tooheys cans and older style of Anzac Day. The whole thing's nostalgic to me.
Don't happen to recall the name of the pub in the beginning of the clip that was around the corner of the entertainment centre do you..?
Been trying to remember it for years lol

These lyrics are as significant today as they always were. Thank you for giving me an anthem then and now.

Surely the most succinct song about female/male personal politics from the 80's or possibly ever. An absolute classic

I Enjoyed this very much.
