This guy has a mesmerizing voice!. Heard this song on the original Miami Vice. Was just haunted by how beautiful it sounded!. Still maybe my favorite song to this day
Do we truly understand just how lucky and privileged we were to have grown up during this era in the eighties and were able to have experienced such great music ? Damn it was an amazing time. I go back in my mind as often as possible because this crap they refer to as music today is absolutely horrible !
I wish I was still there as well. It was a hell of alot better than the current insanity we have going right now. I miss the days when the world was not about to fall into a marxist/communist dystopian nightmare...
Yes, but my dad at the time told me the Butthole Surfers was the worst shit he had ever heard haha. Maybe as we get old it all seems like all new stuff sucks. Who knows.
1986 I was 20 years old I'm glad I was born in the 60s because of all the different styles of music I had it's way to commercialized now about who's the fastest drummer or guitar player.
Such a smooth sound. Man, I miss the 80's! We may not have had the 'convenience' of having a phone/computer/camera in our pockets but life was so much easier.
This is one of those songs that kept me going for years - the atmosphere it creates speaks to a time of dreams. But I need to stay real, and so much of the last century is too painful to think about. 😢
The start of the song in particular makes me imagine just laying somewhere looking up at the stars at night, being hypnotised by the hypnotic melody of this masterpiece.
I love everybody's comments on this video, because we all feel the same way- desperately desire both the return of the 80's and our youth, miss the great music (and music period) that MTV used to play, crave the artistic merit that was once the norm in music and has since gone endangered. The best acts however, still hail from the UK.
This song is so cool. Wrapped-up the '80s in a nutshell. So much crap out there these days (2K17). I feel bad for kids these days. Glory Days, '75 to '91. Shout out to those who remember!
So many great bands.songs in the 80's. General Public, Church, English Beat, The Specials, Echo and the Bunnymen, the list goes on and on. Haunting, rich music that gets inside of you and plucks at your heart strings for reasons you don't fully understand. What a great musical decade.
I had gotten married in 86 and was living overseas. I came home circa 1989, and heard this on KROQ. I cried all the way down the 405, i needed this song.
I didn't live in SoCal but visited family a few times a year. I used to tape music off KROQ and I still have them. I break those cassette tapes out every now and then. Great times!
As a young, innocent and naive guy. The one thing I remember about the Church. Was how far ahead they were of their music. I love them then. I love them now...
This was mine and my very first girlfriend's song. Havent seen her in 3 decades, but always think of her when I hear this. This is why music is such an important part of our life experience.
UA-cam is also being killed, the ads are getting longer, more frequent. UA-cam was amazing when it started, there's just too many ADS now. Next they'll censor comments, just watch
this kind of music was when alternative was real. This is so classic and beautiful, this is a lovely song. This song, all the good stuff that Peter Murphy dead, the cold, The Cure, the class, and so many more. A beautiful time when this kind of music was relatively cool and respected.
yeah, and it was "alternative" because it wasn't on the radio, except for maybe smaller independent high school or college stations. never heard this kind of shit on mainstream radio until nirvana, pearl jam, etc., made "alternative" a mainstream genre.
1995 stargazing in a pickup bed listening to this with my gf who has since passed away untimely. I'll always have that memory of us. Real, yet magical.
Ahhhh this song just took me back to my high school days living in PB Cali riding beach cruisers and skateboards up and down the boardwalk looking for parties! ❤ miss the 80s!!
They don't make bands or songs like this anymore. I miss the 80's so much. Still it makes it more special that only a select few can appreciate the type of words n music that captivate you n take you into a dream-like state. Robert Smith once called it "happy-sad"... the Church is one of those groups that gives us that awesome meloncholy happiness
I had this magical girl, significant other in the 80`s. Halley`s Comet in `86 flying by along wth this song by the church & captain of her heart were quite the BACKDROP as well OUR soundtrack. Way out thing is this new chick i`m locked in with was BORN in: 1986!!!!!!!
I don't think they were ahead of their time at all. Give U2's Unforgettable Fire album and any Go-Betweens album a listen. They were an outstanding product of the time.
This tune is nothing short of resplendent. In memory of My Eternal Love, My Western Star, My Barbra Rose (in Heaven since Nov. 2010). And now, My Forever Baby-Love, you can hold a galaxy in the palm of your loving and tender hand. Come back for me very, very soon, Barb. I'll be waiting for you.
This band is stronger now than ever. Further/Deeper is an awesome album. I love the 80's music and now in 2015 i can still get that feeling again from the Church. One of my top favorite bands of all time. Yesterday/Today and Forever

A starry night, a guy I just met, a long ride home, a great discussion about music theory."Is that a G7? I can't get it to sound right." Great memory of a very cool night.
I've been listening to this song since it came out in the 80's. It's been on most of my mix tapes, and I can listen to it over, and over again. I never hit skip when it's playing. I won't change the channel if it's on... and if it's on-demand, I watch it over, and over. I am calling it. This is my favorite song.
This song MUST be listened to with headphones, or earbuds , with eyes closed, from CD or other stereo form. It swirls through your head going from ear to ear. An experience!!! Listening on UA-cam does not do it justice.
Remember being in the States in 1990 on my round the world trip. Church was playing and I bought a ticket just to hear this song. Unfortunately there were no bagpipes. May have been San Francisco or LA. As an Australian I was thrilled.
The 80's had the Best Music and alot of new movies, it was such a great Era and i miss the 80's, but have all these great tunes to remind me again of the 80's, I so love the 80"s.
Perfect song to have on while alone, drink in hand, while your brain goes into deep thoughts.... It's 2018.... They could release this song today and it would be a hit.
this song brings back great memories from the late 1980's, early 1990's when life was simpler. Oh well, life changes quickly. I will never stop listening to this song though.
This guy has a mesmerizing voice!. Heard this song on the original Miami Vice. Was just haunted by how beautiful it sounded!. Still maybe my favorite song to this day
One of the most beautiful wistful songs ever penned or played
Definitely always takes me someplace intangible , to distant , dreamy memories .
Do we truly understand just how lucky and privileged we were to have grown up during this era in the eighties and were able to have experienced such great music ? Damn it was an amazing time. Soooo lucky!
I'm always going back. I wish I was still there😔

Such a smooth sound. Man, I miss the 80's! We may not have had the 'convenience' of having a phone/computer/camera in our pockets but life was so much easier.
And so much more engaged. Not just zombies to the tech.
Great guitar riffs
And damn, we had music! I wouldnt trade it for nothing!
Here, here. At time you could have a slash behind a tree, not have worry about at 4 deffent camera's. Zooming in on yourself.
@TTFPouyi @Jim Burgess Dude there was " the Rolling Stones " you have heard of them, haven't you? Paint it Black, if you're got z time, Dude.
This is one of those songs that kept me going for years - the atmosphere it creates speaks to a time of dreams. But I need to stay real, and so much of the last century is too painful to think about. 😢
True fact: You can't be or stay in a bad mood while listening to this song. :)
The start of the song in particular makes me imagine just laying somewhere looking up at the stars at night, being hypnotised by the hypnotic melody of this masterpiece.

A Collaboration of great 👍 musicians creating awesome music 🎶 for generations of people to enjoy forever ❤, Bravo 👏
This song still is mesmerizing after so many years.
I don't think these guys had a clue what this song would mean to us down the road. It is utterly timeless. Brilliant!!!!
I love everybody's comments on this video, because we all feel the same way- desperately desire both the return of the 80's and our youth, miss the great music (and music period) that MTV used to play, crave the artistic merit that was once the norm in music and has since gone endangered. the song is still just as astounding as it was back in the day. prescient and timeless and utterly fantastic
This is truly one of the most atmospheric songs of the time. This song has a certain gravity to it. What a great and timeless song this is !!!
I love the “atmospheric” term. Most of my favorite music is in that classification, if you will…
Takes me back to my early 20's when life was easy and fun. Time goes so fast.
Same
This is a memory of old school days...way back when. There was no better time to live.
This aussie band is simply great, im proud to be an aussie and i love our music to farking bits...THE CHURCH
Smooth. Just smooth man. Could listen to this for hours. It's like something shimmering and whi-te.

Why can't todays music make my ears happy like this music did/does will for my lifetime?
I will call it... This is my favorite song ever. Heard it when it was first released, and have never grown tired of it.
Same.
Amen to that
A guitar, some beer , some weed and a campfire under a summer sky. That was life!
Word , tru dat!!!
Agreed
Definitely bro
Early 80s nobody cared if you smoked weed in the pub while watching a band.
@@grahamramsay2253 Sweet poontang!
This song is so cool. Wrapped-up the '80s in a nutshell. So much crap out there these days (2K17).
I feel bad for kids these days. Glory Days, '75 to '91. Shout out to those who remember!
I graduated in 1975. Don't remember much after that till around 2001 when I woke up to find I had two kids in high school. It was a crazy time>>>
If you stopped in 1991 you missed on a great decade of music in the 90's between alternative rock and the best period of hiphop ever...
I’d expand that to maybe 98.
Yeah the 90s was the beginning of the self-absorbed depressing shit we have today.
@@asherouk7308 80s goths ?
Late 70s post punk ?
Maybe even The Doors 'The End', Simon and Garfunkel 'The Sound of Silence' in the 60s.
One of my favorite songs from that era. Never gets old.
So many great bands.songs in the 80's. General Public, Church, English Beat, The Specials, Echo and the Bunnymen, the list goes on and on. Haunting, rich music that gets inside of you and plucks at your heart strings for reasons you don't fully understand. What a great musical decade.
Jack Lynch Well said! Long live the 80's!
Dont Forget the best band of all time; the smiths.
I concur
I loved WLIR-FM new music pioneers way back when, NYC area, here's their list of some of the best '80s tracks: www.advancedspecialties.net/wlir.htm
There were some good American bands around in those years too - and I'm a Brit! REM, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Talking Heads...to name a few.
What an era for music
I had gotten married in 86 and was living overseas. I came home circa 1989, and heard this on KROQ. I cried all the way down the 405, i needed this song.
ah, KROQ 106.7 FM
I didn't live in SoCal but visited family a few times a year. I used to tape music off KROQ and I still have them. I break those cassette tapes out every now and then. Great times!
As a young, innocent and naive guy. The one thing I remember about the Church. Was how far ahead they were of their music.
I love them then. I love them now...
Knew of them, didn’t know them, heard this and finally found them. Can’t believe it took me 30 years. Love them
This was mine and my very first girlfriend's song. Havent seen her in 3 decades, but always think of her when I hear this. This is why music is such an important part of our life experience.
Well it certainly is part of Y music is extremely important in our Lives, and Yes, the memories Do become treasures..........T
Still *Extraordinary* after all these years (in 2024). Have loved this for so long 🤗🤗🌌👏👍🎸🎶🎤🎹🥁🇦🇺
I completely miss the days of sitting in the café listening to the likes of the Cult, Cure, and The Church!
***** right if that were so, why did you comment then... your obviously watching this video for some reason.. or your a millennial troll
I had to look that up... even knowing that type of song is ridiculous.
I did. Not my cup of tea, but enjoy!

+Mark Klein I was obsessed with MTV back in the 80's too. Good times we had. Check out my New Wave Vol 2 playlist on UA-cam.

this was all popular in Europe, but the us fell behind for awhile back then, you actually had to "look," for good stuff like this...
When alternative really mattered. Once you got to around 1992, it all changed.
Robert A. Hansen exactly.
Alternative was cool in the 90s, till like '96.

MontrealMan1970 so sorry for your loss,I hope nothing but good memories fills ur head Wen u hear this
IN the moment of writing this, 72 people don't understand this is the most elegant song of the 80s...
+Abel Israel Cruz Ayuso One per cent of any group will dislike something, even if it is free $100 bills. Tastes can not be explained.
Indeed, but it doesn't stop being strange...
I love both this song AND free $100 bills! I'll send you the address to send them to.

An Australia Band that was ahead of its time and music. This was another fine musical talent of the 1980's era with its lyrics and instruments.
They still are an amazing musical talent, have you heard their new album Another Century? Amazing!
no but I will ?

....almost 2016. those of us that were old enough to appreciate the music of the Eighties know that it was the best of all time. ....
Right on. I saw Bauhaus twice. And Black Flag. Never saw these guys. Peter Murphy's solo music was similar to this.
I once drove to and from work for 3 days listening to this song on repeat!
This song takes me to another place.
One of the most beautiful songs takes me back to my youth as it probably does to most who hear and remember it..

Hauntingly beautiful. Boy the 80s were great.
This song so modern !! 80s music before its time !!!

Just saw them live again... They've still got it, and some!
Hey Australia, I love ya!! and this band.*
i can still remember the 1st time i heard this song and the feeling in the air that night, i hope it stay with me forever
A very impressive song with a very special ambience.
The 80's will always be there when we put on and listen to these great hits, it's always a flash back moment in time for me.
This song still makes me feel kind of anxious and expectant, in a good way. I miss the 80's too. They were the best decade for music and societal evolution.
You have no idea how fast our youth passed us by under the Milky Way...Smoke one for me bro...from California.
this song i still gives me chills what a song
"Under The Milky Way "
The Church
Sometimes when this place gets kinda empty
The sound of the breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Lower the curtain down on Memphis
Lower the curtain down on me
I got no time for private consultation
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
It leads you here, despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
Leads you here, despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Under the Milky Way tonight
Under the Milky Way tonight
Under the Milky Way tonight
David H thanks for posting the lyrics
Thanks mate.
Thank you for posting the lyrics!
I can just put this on repeat and just listen over and over
Just discovered this at 44 yrs old thanks to Stuart Marconie.
A starry night, a guy I just met, a long ride home, a great discussion about music theory."Is that a G7? I can't get it to sound right."
Great memory of a very cool night.
Love this song ❤️
I've been listening to this song since it came out in the 80's. It's been on most of my mix tapes, and I can listen to it over, and over again. I never hit skip when it's playing. I won't change the channel if it's on... and if it's on-demand, I watch it over, and over. I am calling it. This is my favorite song.
A glass of wine,and this song...amazing.
When I hear this, it's early 1988 again, and I'm still only 19 yrs old...the power of music.
Timeless perfection! They sure don't make great music like this anymore....
People can't form any introspective thoughts.. to busy trying to get noticed. Shallow af
Sad but true.
Another great song from the 1980's, great driving song.
***** - 1988
Sorry, I was stuck in a 80's night of downloading music.
For sure. Also, World Party's making it all Come True...
80s is the best decade for music by a mile.
Every generation has a moment this was mine... Thank God for the glimpse of peace to a child who will never be again.... goodbye youngster.
I always loved this song. It was so awesome & I felt rather deep.
This BAND HADN'T HAD MANY songs make the charts but this song is one that stands out. Love this song.
Not many hits, but they are still recording and touring after 40 years and they are prolific with solo work too - Steve Kilbey in particular.
Yes, those pipes made it extra fantastic! Love bagpipes anytime!
It doesn't matter how much time has past. this song still rocks!
favorite song !!!! i love The church !!!
this is one of the songs that make wish we were back in the 80s! i miss my days of being 15-24! the best days of my life!

I feel like we are so lucky to have grown up in the 80's !
Agreed. Even as the World turns to crap, I'm thankful that we were young when the World was good.
Amen!
Dilly Dilly!!!
Perfect song to have on while alone, drink in hand, while your brain goes into deep thoughts....
It's 2018.... They could release this song today and it would be a hit.
There are no words I have for this.. it just does it for me & I'm sure other folk❤️
Just mind blowing music when I was a teen.
It still is.
I was in my 20's and wild as hell. This music went well with that.
I have so many memories attached to this song/band I cant believe how long its been!
this song brings back great memories from the late 1980's, early 1990's when life was simpler. Oh well, life changes quickly. I will never stop listening to this song though.
Just saw them tonight in Orlando playing a concert for the 30th Anniversary Tour. They put on quite the show!
Glad I found this version, great song!!! Takes me back to my teens.
this song makes me feel a way that no words can explain! who else feels the same way?!
Moody great song! One of my very fave.s!
Another beautiful song that is an example why the 80's was the best decade in music!!!
