Digging for Lightning Strike Summerville Megalodon Teeth

  • I consider myself fortunate anytime I find a location able to produce megalodon teeth. But every every once in a while, I find a spot that produces the lightning strike teeth and I go crazy. I hunt as much as I possibly can because I know it won't last long. A couple of days maybe, at best. There is no waiting in this hobby - to get the teeth, I have to go when they can be found. If I wait, they could be re-buried and the chance to find them lost forever. I took every opportunity to collect this location and everyone who I ran into there was just as focused as me. I saw a bunch of other nice teeth from here and they were all unique - colorful, patterned, beautifully preserved. True Summerville gems! Now its back to the research and exploration. Gotta find a new spot to go digging for shark teeth.

    That was a great explaination write up! It is the same indeed for the artifacts I secure! Just 72 hours ago I busted to get through a prelim Archaic site and found a couple stellar points (on video)... and today the very same site was turned into rows for agriculture! There would have been no promise of any return from these artifacts... and this is a common thing. I hope you are well Bud! My son Andrew (15) LOVED the meg you traded me... and I loved gifting it to him. It was so perfect to see the orange meg come out at :30! Again a meg at 1:30... fantastic job guys! What you have been able to accomplish in teeth has been exceptional.

      Hi Happy, sorry I don't know any public locations in New York for fossil hunting. I do know your state fossil is the eurypterid, also known as the sea scorpion, so maybe that's something you could search for. a place called Lang's Quarry produces and sells them, but there might be other locations where you can find them. Happy hunting!

    I live on top of the Cretaceous-Aged Tuscaloosa Group in Lee County, AL, and it looks promising but not much to it, reportedly. Theres a museum in Montgomery with a case of shark teeth found in Lee County, but for the most part, all the good stuff is near the MS border or down in FloriBama. Still keeping an eye out though, wish theyd just surface like they do in SC

    Are lightning strike teeth named for their color or did a bolt of lightning struck the tooth? I'm not sure.

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  7 років тому

      they are called that because of the color patterns in the teeth that look like lightning strikes. They usually come from tree roots leaching minerals from the fossil.

    • @blackriverfossils

      an angustidens tooth is a member of the giant white shark family that lived during the Oligocene. It is the evolutionary equivalent of the grandfather of the megalodon shark.

    This mean the rest of the fossil should be near of the teeth?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому +1

      +Arthur Rodrigues the geologic formation where I found these teeth has been reformulated, meaning the ocean has eroded the fossils from their original sediments and then redeposited them, so any other associated remains have been dis-articulated long ago.

    • @arthurrodrigues7535
      @arthurrodrigues7535 8 років тому

      +blackriverfossils Thanks for the answer.
      But I find strange when paleontologists discovers fossils in regions without water that seems haven't passed enough changes to this happen (Like Lucy and our ancestors in Africa deserts for example) assuming that definitely they must had also a mother, partner, son and the bones of others from the same specie should be founded in the same region when we find one, because they lived near, but strangely this seems impossible, as if was necessary to be buried quickly after death and when bones are exposed to sunlight for thousands of years, they could be corroded in air and the evidence was completely lost. Do you already read something about this?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому +1

      +Arthur Rodrigues it is necessary to be buried quickly for a fossil to form. scavengers scatter bones and the elements destroy them before they can fossilize. Very few remains actually are preserved as fossils.

    Why cant you pull the teeth out its 0:06

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому

      +Leilani Williams because when some of the teeth like that one first came out of the dirt at this spot they are very soft. if I pulled the dirt off before the tooth was dry, I risked breaking the tooth.
