Collecting Megalodon Teeth and other Fossils in Summerville SC

  • Collecting fossils in Summerville can be very productive under the right conditions, and lately we have had the right conditions. It rains all the time, and the constant erosion is littering the bottom of my favorite creek with fossil shark teeth. I found two megalodon teeth in the same stream which is unheard of! They are just not found naturally eroded at Summerville land sites with any kind of frequency. I'm a lucky guy doing an awesome hobby in a great place!

    Just came back to this vid after 6-7 years it created alot of my memories and fantasies when I was younger. Me and my buddies would try to find shark tooth at the beach and in mud. Finding this vid brings alot of nostalgia thanks

    For some reason I always want to slap people when they find amazing, huge teeth that are nearly intact, but have a bit of root damage, and they get disappointed. I mean, any tooth would make me pass out if I found it, root damge or not.

    Unfortunately, we haven't been in the Edisto yet this year. It has been above flood stage for a while and the Dorchester County authorities have advised people to stay out of the river until the flood waters recede. I have been diving at half its current levels and been tumbled across the bottom like a twig while I was wearing 40 pounds of lead and holding onto an anchor line with 2 anchors. The current in that river is no joke!

    Hi! The teeth ya'll are finding are amazing! My husband and I love to look for shark teeth. We are planning a trip to Summerville SC next month for our 2 year anniversary. What are the best creeks in Summerville to start our hunt?

    Wow. It has also been raining up here in NC for quite a while and I was only able to get one hunt in the past few weeks. The rain this summer is a killer! Hopefully the water will recede quickly enough before it gets too cold. lol. Good luck with the hunt and keep safe!

  • @blackriverfossils

    start by going to beaches where you know it is possible to find teeth. google beach names and shark teeth to see if people are talking about finding teeth at those beaches. then, go at the right times. after storms is usually good. low tide is usually good. early morning when nobody has collected yet is also good. Concentrate on looking for dark (black, brown) colors and triangles. You'll get the hang of it.

    Hello, Do you by chance give short artifact finding tours. I know you can't open the door too wide as hoards would follow but there are some of us who would pay for your time I'm sure. My son and I hunt teeth around Jacksonville Beach and although it's not the mecca it is still fun. We would like to venture up to the SC area some weekend.
    Thanks, DJ

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  9 років тому

      Hi DJ, Sorry, I don't lead any tours. I'm just a regular guy who likes hunting fossils. i thought about it before, but the biggest problem is the inconsistency. hunting is only good when conditions are right, and they aren't right often so scheduling tours where people would actually find things is next to impossible. Plus I work a lot so that makes it even tougher. I promise if I ever do offer any kind of excursion I'll put it on my channel. Thanks for watching. Kim

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  9 років тому +1

      Mike Mike The area where I live has been in and out of the ocean many times over the last 30 million years. The fossils get deposited and then the ocean currents move the bottom around and concentrate them. This creek cuts through a really concentrated area and that's why there are so many fossils. By contrast, other creeks in the area have nothing (but I don't make movies there haha!)

    if you have a place to go, you don't need a guide. you need to watch the creek and see when the water is clear enough to see the bottom as soon as possible after a heavy rain. that is the only time you're ever going to find teeth laying out in the open. lots of people collect fossils.
