    I'm happy that dunkey is doing well with big mode already but I wish more people would say the name Billy Basso out loud in their videos about Animal Well more often. Billy dedicated 7 years of his life to to creating this game and he crafted one of the most thought out and well designed games in recent years and while i'm sure he's very grateful to dunkey and happy with the success of the game he definitely deserves the recognition.
    No hate to Mr.Plott or even dunkey, I'm a big fan.

    • @ForgivingCross
      @ForgivingCross Місяць тому +41

      Yeah, Dunky put his money where his mouth is and found an incredible developer to help and publish but Billy Basso is the one who spent years and years crafting the game himself.

      This. It's honestly kinda crazy to see almost every single online personality say "Dunkey made a game" or "Dunkey's game." He most definitely didn't make this game 😅

    • @MyNameIsDecember
      @MyNameIsDecember Місяць тому +12

      I noticed that immediately as well. Every streamer, every article I read has donkey's name first and Billy's last but to be fair without his gravitas I don't think there's any way this would have launched with the success that it did. I think it's going to be a live and learn moment but there's also the fact that maybe Billy doesn't want to be in the spotlight?
      Not likely but stranger things have happened

    • @MyNameIsDecember
      @MyNameIsDecember Місяць тому +6

      I'm going to add another note here and say that part of the reason Billy isn't getting the recognition as bad is also the type of game. This is. Everyone knows the developers of undertale because of the story, but animal well seems to be very light on that area. If there is an overarching story, it's going to be very subtle.
      I think if there was more of a story focus than people would look at Billy basso more as a writer than just a game developer, as it stands he made a very intricate and deep puzzle game but not a narrative that would put him in a different category.

    This game is a great example of insanely good "Play Conditioning". Not including any kind of tutorializing forces the player to figure the mechanics out for themselves, BUT every tiny detail of the level design in the first few rooms expertly guides that process. The first door is the perfect example. As Sean points out, the striking yellow buttons and the little lights above the door make it obvious what you need to do, and the design of the room teaches you not only how to solve this single puzzle, but also how you need to approach the game. You can't reach the closest button to you, but it's right next to an offscreen exit. Ok, so I learn that some puzzle solutions will span multiple rooms. The second button is up high. I'll use this crank to raise the platform... Oh, it doesn't go high enough... I guess sometimes, the obvious solution won't be the right one. The third button is across the water and easy to hit! But wait, now I can't get back... And I can't go forward... I'm stuck and there's nowhere to g- Oh! Ok, so I need to examine every tiny nook and cranny because apparently paths can be hidden in VERY small places. Then, the road back around to that first inaccessible button shows you, through the framing that Sean talks about, that paths weave in and out of other screens, that the 'negative space' of one screen might be hiding a path, and that even a tiny corner of a screen could be part of a path. Then, as you investigate how to hit the final button, you have to go back into a previous room and boom, now another hidden path that you probably completely missed the first time you walked through becomes glaringly obvious.
    It really is amazing design. I can't wait for a couple of decades to pass so that @hbomberguy can release a video essay on this game: "Animal Well Is Genius, And It Shows Play Conditioning, Which Is A Term I Coined, And Here's Why"

    • @ilikeshiba
      @ilikeshiba Місяць тому

      That’s so funny, those types of movement mechanics were the main way I played through the game. It’s actually very surprising to me how different Sean’s solutions are. I think I may have accidentally done some speedrun strats and even gone to places in the “wrong” order.
      But the existence of hummingbirds and vines implies that’s not the case, the game just lets you do things in reverse order quite often and even like enter from the intended exit.
      I never felt like the way I was playing was wrong, though I did think some of the movement tech required at times was quite difficult. Like multi-screen frisbee and bubble set ups with a lot of precise positioning.
      It does make me more impressed with the level of polish and play testing required to make sure that everything was sound and smooth despite the differences.

    • @egolayer13
      @egolayer13 Місяць тому

      I got lucky and figured out chaining bubble jumps almost right away. I just spent several minutes in the room where you get the bubble seeing what all it could do. Watching someone play without it makes me realize what a revelation it was.

    • @JL-random-characters
      @JL-random-characters 13 днів тому +1

      @@egolayer13 yea there's a room near the wand where you basically need to do it if you want to get to the egg without the frisby. I figured it was a challenge room with the bubbles and ended up testing the timing until I found the chaining. Ended up 100%ing this game, great little experience.

    50:38 I don't think I ever had that happen to me while playing the game. From the start it's pretty obvious that you have four ways to go, each of them lead you back to the middle, and once you go those ways, there are flames on your map showing you where to go. I've heard people getting confused about the path in the top-left area and can understand that if you're not playing in one sitting. Well, the final phase of the game is pretty impossible, but before that your goal is rather clear the entire time. Collect this, collect that, collect those, and then good luck.

    The game looks MUCH better with scanlines, I can't believe some people play it without.

      It probably looks much different on a monitor or TV. But I watched this video on the phone, and honestly cannot tell the difference between the two settings.

    Game's good but half of day9's amazement is just at the concept of a sidescrolling game lol

    Roleplaying games are not ludologically competitive they're narratively collaborative, so the idea about "theory crafting" D&D combat, or "white room analysis", hints about an erroneous understanding of the medium of roleplaying (aside from being fun on their own merit outside the medium of roleplaying).
    That said, Animal Well, what an absolute masterpiece of a game.

      I haven’t gotten to the part in the video where he mentions this so excuse me if this is irrelevant but early D&D did have competitions and more PVP style competitive stuff going on. Though I think the most common type of competition was in dungeon raiding, like who could survive and get to the end.
      For example, the original tomb of horrors module from 1975 was created to bring to a convention and was run as a tournament by Gygax.
      Going back to original D&D’s roots in war gaming as well I think there was a more competitive element to it. However you’re correct that modern table top RPGs and D&D tend not to be competitive at all anymore.

    It took me a rather long time to figure that out at 9:30...
    Maybe because I was too fast.
    Maybe because I went right first.
    I just didn't get stuck on that side so I didn't have a reason to look there...
    God it's really funny hearing day9 just rant repeatedly on whatever tutorial he got traumatized by that kept going "Commander do this simple thing"
    He needs to play more good games or something.

    The game looks kinda neat I guess but the hyperbole is strong! Its cool and neat but come on its not a masterpiece.

      @@AdaptiveReasoning It's a joke. If you watch this video a chat member says this exact thing, and day9 then erupts telling them about the 1000s of hours of VODs on UA-cam.

    pfft, Treasure Island Dizzy did this in the 80s. With the worst jump arc in history.

    One thing though. I think the sounds in this game are infuriatingly annoying. There's a constant engine sound loop on the background and it's ending up not creating atmospehere, but taking from it.

    This game really didn't resonate with me due to what I would consider to be glaring design flaws. Glad it's getting recognition, though
