My friend and I were both there at zero hour on preorder day for the Index. I got my order through for the full pack in 5 min, my friends bank denied him, and by the time he had it sorted, it was about 10 past and the full package had sold out. He had already been contemplating keeping his 1.0 base stations, since he can't expand his play area at this time. So he got the HMD and Knuckles pack which hadn't sold out yet. Both should be arriving June 28th, but it will be interesting. With the original Vive, I got my preorder through 3 min after it went live on Feb 29th. That 3 min translated to it arriving 3 weeks after the release date. It looks like Valve compensated for this though, which is welcome to me. Guess we'll really know around the middle of June though.
Looks so good but the price is making me buy it piece by piece. Preordered the controllers and will probably wait until the end of the year for the HMD. My newly purchased Vive will be enough for the time being. So excited to see that NMS will support the knuckles!
@@OverbiteGames Yeah the lack of modularity and less good tracking put me off on the Rift. Too bad Rift users can't experience the knuckles. The Oculus controllers don't seem too bad though, not like the Vive ones that I'm stuck with for a few months.

It’s November 2022. I am watching your video here, after being a subscriber to your channel for more than 1 year. I pointed out because I am watching this because I just bought a valve index. I bought it because I have a quest to, but I wanted some thing with higher fidelity, as a PCVR machine. So it’s funny watching your last comments here at 11:28 as you reflect on how the VR market is hitting up with the rift. And while I have no words to say anything other we know the rest of Meta’s rollercoaster ride since then lol …. They, the Valve Index and Meta Quest, remain “the exciting” ones to watch (+Pico in the background). I know I’m about to have buyers remorse when I find out what valve has been up to, lol what they are going to replace the index with, and it looks to be soon. But I don’t. Watching your video 2 1/2 years later is testament to valve index. It is still some thing that is better than worth while 2 1/2 years later. There’s flaws, but nothing that’s going to kill it. Not like, say…, Oh, I don’t know… Quest pro? Lol. Thanks for this vid I really enjoyed it. A suggestion for something in the future would be stupid videos that walk through the interfaces of the quest to, steam, settings, menus, really boring stuff. But, for example, I had no fucking clue that there was pass-through on the valve index. I’ve had it for two months. Also, I didn’t even notice there was a little round button on the bottom of the front. That you could push that and turn on steam . That’s the kind of really boring level stuff that no one is covering. Just an idea!🎉
I'm interested, but skeptical. 1k is alot of money and is a big bet, without having solid proof from great reviewers (like you) I'm not really feeling like dropping down the money, maybe ~800 with a pack in title would be a fair deal... But if they impress with quality I'd definitely buy it for the price they put it at!
Tested tried the device and Node has had the Knuckles for a long time. Boneworks is specifically designed for them and they've posted loads of gameplay tests with them.
Just wait for reviews, no point rushing to a new product if you dont believe in it. Speaking for myself, i believe the claims, because in the end of the day its Valve, and they are very much about never making compromises, they do something to the best of their abilities, or not at all, combine that with great early reviews (like from the Tested channel) and you might have a better understanding as to why so many people are jumping aboard the bandwagon already. Again, i totally understand your approach tho, and its a lot more sensible then mine ;P
@@ryanwolfe2219 wait really? That sucks. I plan on buying one later so I won't get the free title. Makes more sense to always keep it free for index users as valve would get $1,000 instead of just $60
@@Jojo2 Well, technically it's if they own the headset or just the controllers as well. So if you have a Vive or Vive Pro, and pick up the Index Controllers (Knuckles) then you also get a copy of Alyx. Either one or both by the end of 2019 is a free copy.
I doubt you'll be disappointed honestly. The Price honestly isn't bad considering cost of things in the past. And at what really seems like one of the first true upgrades in vr.
OG vive was 900$ without the delux audio strap which was 99$. That’s 999$ right there without taking inflation into account. The index is the same price for a much better headset. Also remember that the vive pro bundle is 1300$. The index is a steal compared to the vive pro.
I waited for Valve Index so hard, saved extra money each month and after hearing the price tag I sold my old Rift and... preordered a rift s (which I never thought about in first place)... xD... I will try it, if it fits my needs. Only when I know: No, this is not mine, too low specs (or what ever), I will sell it and get myself a Index. But 1079€ are just too much in my opinion for a full starter kit... Maybe it get cheaper by time... PS: Awesome video Mike, as always. Oasis is my most favorite VR channel by far! =)
You have some proper balls for getting it as your first headset, go big or go home ay? im right with you on that tho hehe, did the same a few years back with a Vive :3 Just make sure you have at least a 1080 or similar AMD card, i had 970 sli at the time because they said it 1 of those was good enough, but it kinda wasnt, swapping those out for a single 1080 helped a lot tho :P (and they're bscly saying the same recommended spec for the Index, so a 1080 should do well)
@@keyo3634 My dad made a bet with me that if I passed the swimming test the first time he would buy me a VR headset. I won the bet, I've waited 4 years for it.
Pre-ordered as soon as it hit 0, and i will continue to brag about that because many people crashed when i was able to buy the full kit and an extra basestation, but now its time to save up once again just in case something comes out in the future for the Index ;)
I'm just getting into VR and holy crap this thing is expensive. I have a VR capable PC and I've been researching which one to get. The index is a very nice headset and has everything any consumer would want, but that price tag is outrageous for newcomers. I like how Mike said that Valve was targeting enthusiasts while Oculus was going more for ease of use and simplicity: I couldn't agree more with that statement. Personally I'll be getting the Rift S since I'm JUST getting into VR and well... this thing costs half my salary #college
I'm in the same position, but I've been saving up for a long time with the intention of buying a VR set when something new comes out. Not gonna lie, it's honestly a bit more than I was willing to pay for, but it makes sense looking at what's inside of it. Just ended up biting the bullet and pray to God it'll be worth my money. The €1079 it costs is not an insignificant amount of money for me. At least I'll have something else to cry about if it's not as good as people were hoping for.
As somebody beginning with VR, you made the best possible choice, you got a cheaper headset with less hassle to setup, whats not to like? :) You can always upgrade later if you end up loving VR and being able to save up for a 'more pc like' VR experience. Again, as somebody new to VR the Rift S is going to be awesome, you did well :P
@Spicy Meatball "Not really worth chucking 1k+ at the index unless you have the cash to burn, imo" hits the nail right on the head, the Valve Index is aimed at enthusiasts with a budget to spend, if your new to VR its pretty logical to think of the Index as a pricey headset, and something like a Quest or Rift S would be a much better option. And thats exactly the difference between Valve and Oculus, Valve is still going for the enthousiast (like they did with the Vive) but Oculus has started trying to pull in the general public, both are great ways forward in their own right.
@Spicy Meatball Exactly :) (for that matter i too would've loved the Index to be cheaper ofc, but to bad, and it does very much look like the hardware justifies it)
I'm still on the old oculus, because of the lack of money. But it's really nice to hear your thoughts about this and love your videos. Keep up the good work!
Same here , I hope one day they make a wireless rift that uses the current usb sensors , and still relies on the pc hardware to run it . The quest came close to what i wanted , TP Cast wireless adapter looked promising but has performance issues .
I think I'll be getting the controllers for sure, as I already have a vive and have been following the development of them for quite a while. Maybe one day I'll get the headset but not anytime soon.
to everyone complaining about the 1,000$ pricetag - let's do a comparison: Valve Index HMD + Index Controllers + Base stations = 1,000$ vs one of the many ridicilously overpriced flagship smartphones out today that cost way over 1,000$, that doesn't do much more than a regular mid-range phone. which one would you choose to spend a thousand bucks on?
Forget comparing it to a phone, compare it to a Vive Pro, €1400 vs €1079, but the cheaper option improves everything besides resolution. LOL. Rip HTC tbh.
PRAISE LORD GABEN! Index FTW! First batch pre-order status with headset, controllers, and virutallink. I'll grab LH2.0 later, my 1.0 works great. There is still a big NDA on something else about the Index, we won't know what it is and we don't know when that NDA will be lifted, so the news is not over! Crossing fingers for eye-tracking and foveated rendering. If not on the Index, then 100% for next kit.
@@baotranto5694 Yeah I know but I would also enjoy to take the quest to my friends place. But the quest is as expensive as the Rift S so I don't know. I will just wait to see the game reviews.

@@ThereminHero Sadly the FOV is all thats next gen about a Pimax, and while this Valve Index can be considered next gen (as in, they improved every aspect, so this kinda starts generation2) it still accepts current gen hardware to run it. So if you ask me, the Valve Index actually _is_ next gen, while the Pimax was a fun (but expensive) way to look at the future of VR at best. Realistically we likely wont see such fov's again till generation 3 or 4, because its getting pretty clear that people want less screen-door-effect above anything else, and currently large fov's just means even more screendoor effect then on cheaper headsets.
@@suicidalbanananana yeah u are right its better to make what we have better before we try and make something with bigger FOV with the same or worse screendoor effect

I've been waiting for the ultimate PC VR since I got my PSVR, skipped HTC Vive which I loved everything about it apart from the controllers, something that I loved about rift (but hated the sensords set up and SDE), so skipped 1st gen VR. Original plan was Vive pro + Valve knuckles, until Valve announced their ultimate package. So glad I waited and managed to get my preorder (soldout within less than 2-3 hours in the UK).. Nice top btw :)
Its not, we could get headset from NASA made from pure gold and its gonna be shit as long as the current content is bad joke/trash/overpriced/demo/experience....
- Did you pre-order an Index? -> Yes ofc, duh :P - What do you think of the prices? -> I think they're actually pretty fair, look at a Vive Pro, then look at a Valve Index, the latter should give you a much better experience for much less money, sure it would've been nice if the whole kit was below a 1000 bucks, but thats just not realistic to expect, its 'bleeding edge' high-end vr after all. - Is this going to be your first VR headset or are you upgrading? -> Upgrading from a Vive, so the backwards compatibility is amazing, as it saved me 300 bucks. Anyway as hyped as i am for the Valve Index i dont feel like its a good headset for somebody new to VR, not understanding what the hardware changes mean they will just think of it as an overpriced Vive, beginners should just buy a Quest or something and then if they end up liking VR sell the quest and buy a higher-tier desktop headset like this one. The thing alot of people dont seem to understand about the Valve Index is its goals: - This device is not made to complete with Oculus (VI is aimed at higher-end customers) - Nor do they try compete with Pimax (VI is aimed at LOWER-end customers) - And they likely are not even thinking about more headsets down the line. (while more may come if they deem it necessary to keep pushing VR forward, but they already said theyre not planning a family of devices like all of their competitors are) - Finally, they're not in it to make bank on the hardware, they are in it to make bank on future VR software sales on the Steam platform, they straight up admitted this since the first mention of the Vive, and they still openly say this now that they have their own headset. The goal of the Valve Index (just like the goal of the Vive at the time) is mostly to show other headset makers what is possible in this generation of VR (and with all these small updates amounting to a large improvement, the Index kinda kicked off generation 2 of VR, if all the current expectations people have are true anyway)
I'm getting this as my first VR headset. Seriously can't wait!! Unfortunately I wasn't there for preorders, so they ran out before I could get my hands on one
Yes. So, you can get only the headset and buy the rest later. 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0. However, you cannot make your original Vive headset and controllers work with 2.0 base stations, because the 2.0 base stations lack the synchronization pulse original Vive expects. Vive Pro supports 2.0.
I got a Htc vive pro for Christmas and I got it with the full bundle so I got the new controllers with it and also the base stations but do you think this my be worth it? To buy like a year or so later? And the knuckles I definitely want looks awesome

Im so hoping to see these sickbags like that at a VR game event some time soon.
(on that note, surely we're going to get an E3 like event specifically for VR at some point?)
The index is double the price so of course the rift is gonna have some compromises, but 80 Hz doesn't mean more motion sickness. The frame times matter more up to a point

You’ve came a long way mike good job growing your channel
I was looking for an extensive layout of this thing and I’m not disappointed at all with this video. Thanks!
Maybe "Index" is referring to "index of refraction" within the lenses?
Nice suggestion Jason []-)
Yes, the name is related to the lenses.
It could also be related to the index finger when it comes to the index controllers, so maybe a double meaning with the naming scheme?
@@austinnonr7908 I can no longer find the reference, but someone was analyzing this and concluded that both logo and name are related to the lenses.
Pretty sure this was established months ago on reddit?
Awesome video Mike! You're definitely the best channel when it comes the pc vr headset information! Kudos mate!

DamienG Videos! What don’t u like about the vive pro? Wanna upgrade my oculus but vive controls look like ass
There have been many people who’ve had the chance to try the knuckles, many VR/VRChat streamers and UA-camrs
Oh yeah, I'm totally down for the Knuckles controllers, but I'm concerned about the *headset* itself ;P
14 day return policy minimizes the risk
Just wait for reviews, no point rushing to a new product if you dont believe in it.
Speaking for myself, i believe the claims, because in the end of the day its Valve, and they are very much about never making compromises, they do something to the best of their abilities, or not at all, combine that with great early reviews (like from the Tested channel) and you might have a better understanding as to why so many people are jumping aboard the bandwagon already.
Again, i totally understand your approach tho, and its a lot more sensible then mine ;P
This kind of content is exactly why I'm subscribed to you channel. Great job!
I really appreciate the support Diogo []-)
Finally, can flip a bird at an unruly person
Ordered mine in the first 10 minutes, haven't been this excited since my vive pre order
$1000 USD doesnt seem that bad tbh with all the stuff you get. But it would have been nice to get one of the three valve titles included.
$1000 this or.. $999 Apple Stand?!
Well, you called it early, haha. Index users get HL:Alyx free if they own the headset by the end of 2019.
@@ryanwolfe2219 dang well I don't have a Vive pro so.

I cancelled my Rift S pre-order to wait for the Index.
If you can afford it that is DEFINITELY the better choice. You'll be happy!
I doubt you'll be disappointed honestly. The Price honestly isn't bad considering cost of things in the past. And at what really seems like one of the first true upgrades in vr.
I have the rift s, my next is either going to be the valve index or whatever the next big VR is
OG vive was 900$ without the delux audio strap which was 99$.
I could not pre-order but i did reserve a Steam index set, It's going to be my first VR headset and i belive it's gonna be amazing :D
You have some proper balls for getting it as your first headset, go big or go home ay? im right with you on that tho hehe, did the same a few years back with a Vive :3 Just make sure you have at least a 1080 or similar AMD card, i had 970 sli at the time because they said it 1 of those was good enough, but it kinda wasnt, swapping those out for a single 1080 helped a lot tho :P (and they're bscly saying the same recommended spec for the Index, so a 1080 should do well)
Great video! I’m definitely upgrading from my oculus to the index, this is going to be the best headset/platform for a VERY long time.
I pre-ordered for myself the controllers because they are just brilliant
I got the vive for Christmas and the this came out and saw the finger tracking tech and my reaction was “Well, I want this”
Well, you're spoiled (except of you're a grown up)

Awesome FrostPix []-)
Yep same here. Just getting into vr so I pre ordered the Rift S. Those knuckle controllers look so sick though.
As somebody beginning with VR, you made the best possible choice, you got a cheaper headset with less hassle to setup, whats not to like? :)
You can always upgrade later if you end up loving VR and being able to save up for a 'more pc like' VR experience.
@Spicy Meatball Exactly :)
(for that matter i too would've loved the Index to be cheaper ofc, but to bad, and it does very much look like the hardware justifies it)
Valve Index will be my first headset! Very excited!
Index Controllers intrigue me because I can finally do proper ASL in games.
A wonderful summation! Thank you for being so comprehensive! :) X
to everyone complaining about the 1,000$ pricetag - let's do a comparison:
Valve Index HMD + Index Controllers + Base stations = 1,000$
vs
one of the many ridicilously overpriced flagship smartphones out today that cost way over 1,000$, that doesn't do much more than a regular mid-range phone.
which one would you choose to spend a thousand bucks on?
Good point. I kind of hate the new phones, but I still feel like it’s a bit expensive. But so are the phones
I wont buy I smart phone that cost over 300 euros and they last for about 4 years with daily use.

I'm upgrading from the original Vive. Bought the HMD and knuckles. The 130 degrees FoV made the deal for me.
Pimax 170 though. That's true next gen

Your editing and information boggle my mind. Keep killing it Mike! 🔥🔥🔥
- Did you pre-order an Index? -> Yes ofc, duh :P
- What do you think of the prices?
The thing alot of people dont seem to understand about the Valve Index is its goals:
- This device is not made to complete with Oculus (VI is aimed at higher-end customers)
- Nor do they try compete with Pimax (VI is aimed at LOWER-end customers)
- And they likely are not even thinking about more headsets down the line. (while more may come if they deem it necessary to keep pushing VR forward, but they already said theyre not planning a family of devices like all of their competitors are)
- Finally, they're not in it to make bank on the hardware, they are in it to make bank on future VR software sales on the Steam platform, they straight up admitted this since the first mention of the Vive, and they still openly say this now that they have their own headset.
The goal of the Valve Index (just like the goal of the Vive at the time) is mostly to show other headset makers what is possible in this generation of VR (and with all these small updates amounting to a large improvement, the Index kinda kicked off generation 2 of VR, if all the current expectations people have are true anyway)
