To me that was a foul, using the side of the tip like that is a push shot, I have seen fouls been given for less lol
@@cjfeather @Craig Feather technically not a push shot. I push shot it when your cue is touching the cue ball whilst it's making contact with another. As for it being a foul we have to dig out the rule book. I've never seen a player hit the side of the cue ball with the side of the tip before. If snooker rules say only the tip is allowed to tip is allowed to make contact with the cue ball then maybe its a foul but snooker rules are tricky. I remember Ronnie O'sullivan in 2020 didn't know the in order to lose a frame from a third foul in a row a red only needs to be able to make full contact rather than hit both sides which ronnie thought. Ronnie genuinely didn't know and he's playing professionally since his early teens. Even Selby or Dennis Taylor on commentary wasn't sure in this clip and Dennis Taylor has been playing professionally since the 70s.

I'm no expert, but if the reds above the pink are easier to hit, then it's a miss, no matter the effort. Selby is playing the safest red.
@@banja9172 Yeah, he could definitely hit other reds.
He chose to hit a specific red in an effort to leave nothing on. He could have easily hit the bunch of reds, but he chose not to, making it a miss all day long. It only doesnt get called a miss, if the player does everything in his power to hit a Red, which in this case he obviously doesn't, as he chooses the hardest red to try and keep advantage. If his shot wasnt called a miss then it would mean any player could play half assed attempts to get out of snookers without causing any real damage and keeping advantage despite not even hitting a red or whatever ball on. Effectively it stops players deliberately fouling and benefiting from it

I was never sure about how that miss rule worked. I'm inferring from your comment that the ref will call a miss if the player doesn't attempt the easiest possible shot and fails?
@@spudhead169 Basically yes, but you don't have to attempt the easiest possible. You just have to make a 'good enough' attempt at the one you're playing (in the referee's opinion). How good 'good enough' is depends on the easier shots that are available. If there's a MUCH easier shot available, like there is here, it's pretty certain the referee will call a miss.

How could Selby have got a miss? I understand the miss rule if there are red balls that can easily be hit and the player goes for a difficult one, but Selby was perfectly snookered on all the red balls. Foul? yes, Miss? I don't understand it.
I would say that the "hit it with the side of the cue" shot by Williams against Selby was a foul because it was a push shot. For it to be legal, the cue had to touch the white and immediately move away, which I don't think it did. In the closeup at about 2:19 it looks like he rolls the white rather than just hitting it.

If that Mark Williams sideways strike is not a foul - it should be.
In American Pool it would most certainly be a foul, but in Snooker, all the rules say is: "A stroke is made when the striker strikes the cue-ball with the tip of the cue". Doesn't have to be in a forward motion.

@@VeritasForYou I personally don’t like basketball, but I still think it’s a bit much to call them unintelligent. There’s a difference between being knowledgeable and being intelligent. They have more intelligence in one tooth than most people have in their whole body, it’s just all about basketball technique and play. That’s why they’re the best at what they do.
Snooker is an exceedingly subtle game, it as about the quiet satisfaction from seeing or making brilliant technical shots rather than the loud, raucous hooting and hollering you get at other sports.
basketball - where people go crazy when a 7ft man puts a ball into a hoop thats ten foot off the ground and twice the size of the ball
