V-Ray | Render FAKE FOG EFFECTS using simple techniques
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лип 2024
- In this video you will learn how to create realistic looking volumetric fog effects using very simple techniques and basic cheats. Using those methods you can easily populate your scenes with nice atmospheric effects that look realistic and almost add nothing to your rendering time.
We will first setup our scene using V-Ray's built in Aerial Perspective Effect which is also a fake atmospheric effect. This will give us a good foundation to add our localized fog effects. For this we will built a custom fog shader and map it on very simple geometry. We will use various techniques to hide artifacts to create the perfect illusion of atmospheric cloudy fog effects.
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can also use identical techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3.
A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.

Just amazing, your tutorials are hidden gems, I appreciate your attention to detail and your gorgeous scenes. Thank you ❤
Beautiful indeed.
Oh man, I've been looking for something like this for a while! Thank you!
thank you very much for making this kind of tutorials, they are very practical and very useful
I also try this technique in my office studio, but your technique mind-blowing
Briliant as always. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
nice, very efficient!
Damn, interesting technique with cloud planes! Thank you!
My favorite 3D channel shared a video
I'm so glad I found your channel, great work!
Welcome aboard! 😀
@@JonasNoell oh I've been aboard for a while now, but I wanted to say it nonetheless!
Awesome! You basically translated the PxF_SmokeBox Nuke node into 3dsMax.
Different software, same technique. Awesome result! Nice and Efficient.
Oh interesting, didn’t know that there is a Nuke Node that does the same 😀 I think I have also seen a Plugin for Unreal Engine that does something similar.
Genius
WOW
Wow. Thanks!
Great video!!
I´ll definitely try adding those effects in some my next renderings (depending on the scene) to maybe make my scenes look less "flat" and have more depth to them!
Yeah try it out, you can get some nice results with it! 👍
Awesome content, thank you. I just get really distracted with all the "basicallys" xD
Haha I could basically try to reduce that in future videos basically 😀
@@JonasNoell Had a good laugh with your reply haha. Thanks again for the good content.
Dope! Looking cinematic AF! ❤ is this also possible with Vray GPU?
Yeah, should work pretty much the same
You are so good! Thank you for this smart technique. Would it be suitable for animation or would the illusion easily break?
By the way, I've seen you've mentioned using DaVinci on a number of occasions, maybe a short overview of how you use it?
It depends on what you want to do. So you cannot really fly through the fog for example or if the camera goes in angles where you can see between the planes the illusion will break. I would say it’s more suited for further away background fog effects.
Da Vinci I just use for editing at the moment 😀 Still need to dive into Fusion and so on
NICE JOB, Jonas how did you do those mountains?? any tutorial of that? THANKS
Check out my Megascans tutorials about how to use asset libraries
Great tutorial as always. Do you have a video that goes over your background set up and how you created the moon?
The background is just a dome with a texture and the moon a circular light with a texture
@@JonasNoell Interesting! I didn't know you could add a texture to a circular light. Thanks!
A very good tutorial, mind sharing how you made the nice moon with just VRay sun ? Tia
I’m guessing that’s just the background image ?
No it’s just a moon texture mapped on a circular light 😀
@@JonasNoell I see. that's even a better idea. thanks . please make more tutorial like this.
Hey man, stupid question but the things you do are possible to be done easily in Maya since you are using V-Ray or it's different???
Probably should work pretty much the same
Ok i love this however im more curious about the ba kground and moon. Is it an HDRI? And where did you get them.?
You can find the answer her somewhere in the comments already :)
@@JonasNoell uuuuuuum could've been less cryptic and just told me but I found the comment anyways. Thanks ?
Sorry, I just meant I already answered that and I want to keep the discussion about it concentrated in one comment only. Not meant to be overly cryptic 😀
@@JonasNoell No worries, appreciate everything you do none the less. However, can I ask you where you downloaded the moon? Is it somewhere I can purchase it or did you make it? I have a future project which I would love to use the dome background night sky and moon texture.
@iamski I generated it using Stable Diffusion 😀 But there are literally 100s of moon images you can find on google or other search engines, that should be no issue. Just map it on a circular vray light and you are good to go
I tried using the aerial perspective but if affected my other passes
There is some bug that it affects the ZDepth, or which other passes do you mean? It's normally all in the Atmosphere Pass
@@JonasNoell yes. The Z pass exactly
Too bad Vantage still doesn't support several key features used here - multiply color by opacity, dirt, etc..
I’m sure it will be added over time. Vantage still has to catch up in terms of features. It was the same for GPU and now most things are supported
Can i get this done with corona also.same workflow?
Im not sure about corona, why don’t you just try it? 😀
Audio is abit noisy
Oh really, recently I switched from Premiere to Davinci Resolve and still not super used to it. I will investigate how to get around that. Thx for the feedback
@@JonasNoell Great to hear that you´re now working with Davinci! Could you maybe make a tutorial on how to work with .exr-sequences inside of Davinci? I´m using the "Reactor" script to split the .exr into the individual channels in Fusion but I can´t figure out how to combine them again (similar to how you´d do it in Photoshop for a single image) to get the correct result that you see in the VRay Framebuffer.
I know you said that you´re still not super used to it which is why I´m curious if you´ve tried that before or are interested in trying it :-)
Yeah using the same Script to split up the files. But I haven’t really looked into it in much detail yet. Once I do and have a good workflow I could make a video about it, good idea!
