  • Given Ferrari's long history in Formula 1, it would be impossible for all of its cars to be great. Inspired by its struggles in 2020, we've gone back through the team's illustrious F1 history to dig out the worst cars it produced, and explain what made them so bad.

      The likes of McLaren, Williams and Lotus have had to survive as independent racing teams, where you need to stay at the top to keep hold of your biggest sponsors, and retain your funding year-on-year.
      Ferrari, on the other hand, has been bankrolled by FIAT since the late '60s, so can royally fuck up without losing their income.

    • @RichardsRockin
      @RichardsRockin 3 роки тому +9

      The fact that they have a lot of money undermines a little bit, but it's still impressive nonetheless. McLaren and Williams, the examples given, are teams that already have millions of dollars more than frontrunners and still failed to even be in the points. The most important thing, to me, is that those three still continue on F1, no matter how difficult things get, and they're already staples of the sport. It's a shame that teams like Lotus, Brabham or brands like BMW or Jaguar left the sport.

    • @filmandfirearms

      It's documented. Ron Dennis admitted to it. Alonso's half of McLaren's box was on his side. Hungary's shenanigans could only happen with the help of his mechanics and his race engineer, and he took all the blame afterwards without outing any of them. Thirteen years later, Alonso is overwhelmingly regarded by the entire F1 paddock as a professional driver they'd love to have in their team DESPITE ALL THE BULLSHIT SPEWED BY THE BRITISH MEDIA while Hamilton's known to be a difficult diva when he's not winning, wholly turning all the "Toxic Alonso" argument upside down.
      A good portion of the F1 fanbase, like you, will never comprehend how is it possible that Alonso's regarded as arguably the best post-Schumacher driver above a 4xWDC and a 6xWDC. To simpletons, more WDCs = better and you ain't getting outta that simplification anytime soon. You're just mad at the world for basing their opinion on facts that require watching 20 years of F1 race after race and actually understanding driver's performances, which you lack.

    Ferrari's worst year was 1973. The 312B2 was no match for the cosworth powered garagistas, their world championship endurance team was closing and lead driver Jackie Ickx left the team prior to the German Grand Prix (although briefly returned for one race at Monza). In order to improve on Ferrari's performance Luca di Montezemolo was brought in as team manager in 1974. This allowed Mauro Forghieri to concentrate on the design of the successful 312T.

    The F60 of 2009 would be on my list. Falling from Constructors Champions in 2008 with 172 points to 4th in 2009 with 70 points. Whilst it was initially not as far off the ultimate pace as fellow 2008 championship contenders McLaren, the car showed the lack of effort by the team pushing for the title in 2008 as long as they did (they missed the trick with the double diffuser for example). On top of this, from the driver's perspective, due to the packaging of the Motor/Generator Unit and energy store for the KERS system, which were fitted beneath the fuel tank in an attempt to keep the heavy mass as low as possible, the drawback was the increased centre of gravity when race fuel was added. Although Massa and Raikkonen were able to get the car relatively close to the front (indeed Raikkonen won the Belgian Grand Prix) the drivability problems would rear its head when Massa was severely injured in Hungary. Neither of the drivers hired to stand in for him, Luca Badoer and Giancarlo Fisichella, could cope with the handling characteristics (Badoer qualified and finished last in both of the races he participated in) and with McLaren finding better performance after the German Grand Prix, with Hamilton out scoring everyone from Hungary onwards (in which he scored 2 wins and 4 pole positions between Hungary and Abu Dhabi) Ferrari ceased development on the F60 to try to improve for 2010

    There is just 1 thing that I find hilarious about "F1 fans". During years where Ferrari is underperforming they all like to make fun of Ferrari and say silly stuff but it literally takes 2 points to shut them up :
    1) Ferrari has been in F1 the longest of any team. It's MATHEMATIC that they were going to have several underperfoming cars by staying in the sport for 70 years. Teams like Mercedes will always make you notice how they rarely make terrible cars..but that's because they will just leave the sport once they'll stop winning! We've seen MAAANY teams do this throughout these 70 years (Mercedes included) and you can be damn sure it will happen again soon.
    2) If you have so many bad things to say about a team that has won 16 constructors, 15 driver titles and has fought for the title and won several races in so many years (including the last 3 so it's not like we're talking about just the 70s and 80s here), I can't even imagine what you have to say about Mclaren and Williams spending most of the last decade at the very back, not winning a race for 8 seasons in a row and not winning a constructor for more than 2 decades now!
    The painful truth is that F1 has just got worse and worse in the past 15 years. What used to be a constant experimentation and innovation (possible throughout the huge freedom that was given to the engineers) has now become a pathetic, stale competition where teams are extremely limited in car development and can't really do much to change they way things go.
    In the past 10 seasons, only 2 different teams won the constructor and the driver championship...TWO TEAMS IN TEN YEARS. Do I really need to say anything else?

    I think Ferrari's F310 was not great. I remember Eddie Irvine saying in an interview years after driving it that he was surprised Schumacher was able to push it for wins, as the car felt like a dog to drive!

    The fact that calling out the word "V10" in Ferraris garage in the 90s was like calling out Vodemorts name did hurt them alot.
    In the end the rules forced them away form their beloved bad V12 and they were suddenly competitive again in 1997 :D

  • @jamesshunt5123
    @jamesshunt5123 3 роки тому +1

    The 312T5 was by far the worst because it was so uncompetitive and slow 1979 world champion Jody Scheckter failed to qualify it in some races and Gilles Villeneuve barely put it at the far end of the grid.
    However the 1973 Ferrari 312B3 deserves to be on this list. So bad it didn't even finish on the podium in a single race of 1973. And when Niki Lauda got to test this car in late 1973 he openly called said:"It's sh*t!" to Enzo Ferrari himself.
    And those who believe the 1974 car is the same have no clue. Three different version of the 312B3 were made by Ferrari and all three were distinct enough to get their own type names.

    A video idea - biggest F1 team declines between two seasons. Examples - Lotus 2013-2014, McLaren 2012-2013, Ferrari 2004-2005, Honda 2006-2007, McLaren 1993-1994, Lotus 1978-1979, you get the point. A team doing well in one season and FAR worse the next season.

      Um...I don't think so. Panniers are bags or cases placed either side of a motorbike, or bicycle, & before that, donkeys. So your train only followed those, which pre-date railways.
