  • With Mercedes winning every F1 championship since 2014, it's easy to forget that there were plenty of times in the past when title-winning teams would get it wrong and slip from the top of the mountain. In this video, Glenn Freeman looks back at 10 times this happened, from dominant forces that lost their mojo, to teams that got it right for one year then instantly fell back into the pack.

Mercedes, in it's due diligence, is putting out dominating car after dominating car. At the same time, both Ferrari and Red Bull (the only two teams who can realistically do something about it à la McLaren and Williams vs Ferrari back in the 2000's) have dropped the ball - *hard* in the forme'rs case.
Since the FIA doesn't seem to be willing to put some brakes into any of that, as they did before, I might actualy say that we might have to wait until they just get tired and ze germans decide that it's no longer worth it to have an F1 team.

The top teams sign drivers who can help them in difficult conditions such as rainy races or when the car has the same pace as the other team. Also Better drivers can help their team more to develop the car, use their own set-ups during the race, and suggesting their own strategies.
If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't see Merc paying Hamilton +€47M per year and only give Bottas +€9M. Even in Mclaren he was getting paid more than his teammates, except his debut season.

However, it does show that without a decent car - he has been known to falter.
He & Button were very close throughout their time together at McLaren. In fact, Button outscored Hamo whilst they were teammates.

Btw ANY driver would falter if he doesn't drive a decent car. You saw what Alonso did when he went back to Renault or Mclaren, or Schumacher in Merc.
Even tho 2009 was a horrible season for Mclaren, He still won 2 races, took 4 poles and finished 5th with Mclaren on 4th by some miracle. Meanwhile, his teammate didn't even finish on the podium and ended up 12th.

It's 2030 here, and the Haas domination is just too strong - their aero is unmatched and the Citroën engines are just too powerful. Kvyat won the championship for them last year, but they fired him after he smashed the door too hard, so the current lineup is Mika Hakkinen (who finally came back from his sabbatical) and Jimmy Broadbent.

The issue in 1984 wasn't with Brabham, but with BMW, which, for some unexplainable reason, after more than 3 years In F1, and after a successful year winning the championship, managed to drop the ball and become totally unreliable. In a year McLaren had intense fighting between its two drivers, and considering the number of poles Piquet scored, Brabham BMW missed out on the chance for a back to back championship. Ironically, two years later, McLaren did just that, winning its back to back championship with Prost against Piquet, Mansell, and Williams.

It seems interesting to me how the 2009 McLaren and Ferrari scenario might repeat. Imagine if RedBull brings their A-game in 2021 to fight Mercedes for the Championship and both teams are stuck in a title fight to the very end of that season. With budget cap they won't have enough resources to develop both 2021 and 2022 cars simultaneously, which will obviously affect their new regulations-spec car. Therefore, there is a chance for an other, better prepered title contender team.
Normally I would say that Toto would not let that happen, beastmode boss he is, but since he is said to be on a verge of leaving his current post, who knows?
RedBull is not to sign off as a next year's contender either, they keep developing their 2020 car to better undestand the 2021 project, which is virtually the same car. so who knows?
You heard it here first. Love to you all!

It's 2023 and Mercedes only managed 1 win since the 2021 Abu Dhabi title decider and currently has fewer podium finishes than Fernando Alonso. The only silver lining is they always score points in the races they finish, keeping them ahead of Aston Martin and Ferrari. Meanwhile, Red Bull is now dominating as harder than they have before with Max having a decent chance to beat Vettel's win streak record and Red Bull already equaling McLaren's win streak record.

After mastering ground effect with the 78 and 79 they went all out with the extreme Lotus 80. It was simply undrivable and even destroyed its own chassis due to excess downforce. 2013 McLaren was a bit disappointing. Finishing 2012 with the fastest car, and with a step-change in 2014 coming with the hybrids, the expectation was to evolve the 2012 car into 2013 and show Hamilton how wrong he was to leave. However that isnt The McLaren Way. Clean sheet of paper at the drawing board for a single season, and theyve been playing catchup just about ever since.
