This is the first ride on the all new 2017 KTM 300 XC. It's got a new frame, new motor, and new front forks, to name a few of the changes. This thing did not disappoint!
After riding this bike for about 15 hours, I can honestly tell you that it is the most well rounded bike I have even been around. It just seems to leap off of obstacles and give you a ton of confidence. The new frame is easier to stand up on. The new motor is as smooth as butter with almost zero vibration. It's nearly electric! The Mikuni carburetor has NOTHING wrong with it. It's been getting a bad reputation, but I haven't noticed any problems with mine. I jetted the carb leaner for my altitude and it's been great. I always prefer to use the Red AUX spring in these motors to allow the power valve to open at a lower RPM. For me, that makes the power more predicable. I also think it makes the transition from "off the pipe" to "on the pipe" smoother. The AER forks are great. Very plush in the initial stoke and seems to have great bottoming resistance. I like the fact that you can effectively adjust your spring rate in the forks by simply putting in less or more air. I also like that it's just a single valve that you have to check.
Make sure to check your air pressure while on a stand, or you will be getting a faulty pressure.

very skilled in doing both enduro and talking to the camera XD shows some multi tasking skillz
That bike is just beautiful.
I agree!
I’ve been watching for years and just stumbled across this video. I am now currently trying to buy a used 2017 and just had to say. This is by far my favorite video from you. The way you was on the trail talking and literally in that moment pointing out the pros and cons. Perfecto!!
I can tell be the excitement in your voice that your very happy with it.. Congrats on purchasing an awesome machine.
You could tell that I'm happy with it? :)
That's a sweet looking bike Kyle. looking forward to seeing future videos on it. I'm sure it will provide a lot of future entertainment for you and us.
Thanks for the video
Agreed.
Glad you found one Kyle! Great vid!
Congrats on the new bike!
My brother has that same bike, just a few more mods, it's super smooth on the technical stuff. I have a 08 myself and love it, we ride a lot now and never have problems with our KTMs
That hit that you are feeling on the powerband is because of the mikuni carb guarnteed. My 01 cr250 with the stock mikuni sounds just like this and i can visually see your powerband hitting the same as mine. Its almost like a hard snap when you hit it at times. A lot of people switched out the carb in my bike to make it more smooth but with the way the powerband hits it will shoot you out of corners quicker or up over rocks. I wanted to get a 300 but with the way the 250 runs with the mikuni carb its almost exactly the same bike power wise.
Nice to see the offs as well tbh as we all do it if we pushing it but cool to see you letting us see you doing it very cool🇬🇧👍
I love your all your videos! Please keep making them!
The lack of vibration on this bike is what blew me away. I'm surprised this wasn't the first observation you made about the bike. The difference between my '15 and the '17 is insane!
I will talk a lot more about it in the next video I do on this bike.
Awesome video! Was loving my 17 300 XC before I put it away for winter. I switched to the JD Jetting and saw some great improvement down low. I caved and ordered the HV Lectron from Slaven's with everyone raving about it and I'm hoping to do some comparisons once spring rolls around. Keep up the good work!
Good stuff! What area of the world do you live in? Sorry you already have your bike away for winter.
NWT Canada, snow on the ground and water is starting to freeze. Getting the sleds ready!
Gawd life must be rough for 11 people sitting back watching this amazing video, anyways amazing video great quality visually and audio.
Nice trail ride, I had a 1998 300 exc awesome bike, loved it. good info
You have a great channel going on and such awesome trails to ride on. Wish North Dakota has trails like that, I might would upgrade from my old man 1990 KDX to something more modern.
Yeah, a few things have improved since 1990.
That's one sweet bike all the 17 KTM's are sick I'm gonna grab a 350 SXF and beat up some 450's. At the local track this year 🏁
I have an 08 ktm 300xcw and its perfect in every way. I wouldn't change a thing. still love my 96 xr 250r tho too..best of both worlds I guess
If you love them, stick with them! Nothing wrong with that!
Kyle, you are the man. "Holy Jezebel!!!"
The guys at work started saying it and now I can't stop using it!
That thing looks like a beautiful beast!
It is.
Man that single track looks fun
It's great.
Hey man! I have a 2017 husky te250. A place for a great skid plate and guards the pipe is force accessories. I got one for mine and I have used it and it's proven itself. Just take a look! I highly recommend it
it would be interesting to see a review on the 300/250 xcw and how it compares to the xc versions.
Hey Kyle. Great video man. You've gotten me hooked on this ktm 300xc. Now that you've had it awhile longer, how would you compare it to the 15' model? And is the 2017 upgrades worth all the extra money.
Thanks man
Love your channel can't get enough of your videos! Just got a 2016 Beta 300rr Factory Edition not to long ago and love it! Come up to Boise Idaho and do a video on it I want to hear your opinion on a Beta! Keep doing what you do!
Beta 300rr is the next bike I hope to try next year.
I have a 15 beta 300 with lectron. I picked up a 15 husky 250 immediately added lectron. Me doing that to my bikes was enough to convince my friend who just bought a 17 husky TE300 to buy a lectron also. He said it was unbelievable how much better the bottom end was when he put the lectron on.
I'll try a Lectron on this bike too eventually. Just wanted to try it without first. I have it running pretty well. No complaints yet.
Kyle I hear the 2017 has issues with a restrictive air box, have you heard this? can you confirm that? have you modified the air box? great vids keep em comming.
Sick video keep it up man
Will do.
Hey man, love that your excited about your new bike! Im looking to get into enduro style dirt biking and im wondering if you have any advise on what bike i should start out with.
KTM is a really great bike..
Hey Kyle (nice name:) I was just curious if you ever have a hard time fouling spark plugs when you have to lug the 300 a lot?
I'm new to your videos and I absolutely enjoy the info and the terrain. Where do you shoot most of your videos? Rocky mountains I'm sure but which state? Keep up the good work! I'm in the Appalachians.
Great video
Thanks Brother.
Hi there, i had a look on the tm designworks site and they do hav skidplates for 2017 250/300 2 strokes
Yeah, I saw that after installing the one I have on it.
I'd like to see some sort of comparison of vibration between the two. If the vibration really is more like a 4stroke then that's just incredible.
Comparison videos will be coming later.
Hey Dirt Bike Channel - I just stumbled upon your channel and this video - Great review! I'm getting back in the dirt after 12 years ( 2005 CRF450 ) and can't for the life of me decide between the 300, 350 & 450! I have friends that swear by both the 300 & 450! I like you, will be riding the western CO, UT stuff, so....From the sounds of your reviews, you lean 300 9x out of 10 it seems?
hey, love your videos. I have a 89 kx250 that I just can't get it running right. when I'm coming to a stop it always dies out on me, how should I tune my carb?
Great video. Thanks! I want one. I like when you do the 300 videos cuz your stoked about it, the other videos just don't have that as much, especially the 4 stroke. Why do you choose the XC over XC-W?
Gearing mostly.
nice video i came to same conclusion about my new 300xc tons of power not as much bottom end as i hoped compared to my old 10 300xcw. jetting and carb very inconsistent just added slavens lectron hv carb test ride on friday have big hopes
Let us know how you get along with it.
Realy nice produc
yes its about time
Where did you ride? I'd like to know so I can book a trip to do the same ride. I have the same bike and your assessments were spot on. This is the best bike I've ridden and I put a Lectron carb, scotts damper system, ARC levers, lighting, and guards all around the bike. I have a 2016 KTM 350 xc-f that has blown the top end twice in under 25 hours, and I needed a bike to race while it was at the dealership being repaired, so I took a chance going back to 2 strokes. This bike is a miracle and close to perfection.
All of this riding is in the Central Utah Mountains.
I'm surprised you didn't have anything to say about the reduction in vibration due to the new counter balancer. Maybe I missed that but I do remember you talking about it when riding that other guys 2017 300 in a past video. To me that is the best change on the 2017 since vibration always seemed to be an issue with 2 stroke KTMs. Maybe you will have more on that in future videos? Anyways keep the videos coming. I always enjoy!
It's coming up in the next video I do on this bike.
I love the bike and all of your videos. I was really hoping you would try out a husky TE300 this year! I've got a TE 250 and the thing is amazing! Maybe next year?
I haven't been able to find a good deal on a TE300 yet. I have to try to get good deals on my bikes since I'm losing money when I sell them. Maybe next year...
I appreciate the response and I totally understand. I was only able to buy mine due to it being the last one left in the shop before they moved the 2017's so I got a deal. Keep up the great content 👍🏻
ohhh a new toy must be fun
Your vids are awesome
Thanks dude.
I love these videos
Thanks Wolf.
hey great video and great bike! I just got the 2017 450 exc six days! love it! I love the new xplor 48 forks on the exc, 100 times better than the 4cs honesty, I'm just curious wat yur opinion is on the new airforks? and have you tried the new xplor 48 forks? just wandering dude
Yes, this bike has the AER forks and they were really good on this ride. More testing to come.
Hey Kyle, great video! I've been anticipating what you had say about the 17 300 ever since I saw it on KTMs site. What do you think about using this bike as a high speed desert bike? I know it's praised by single trackers but here in SoCal I mostly ride desert stuff, wanted to hear your opinion. Looking at either this or the new Honda CRF450RX four stroke.
It's also a very good desert bike. I think it's the best "all around" bike made today.
Hey kyle, I'm from east Tennessee and I have been looking for a bike for a while, just waiting for my 4 wheeler to sell. Right now I have a KTM 250sx 2001 just to see if the two-stroke was what I wanted and its fun but it vibrates a lot so I was wondering if the 2017 300 was smooth or not. I also have two friends who just got new ktm 350 xcf-w's and they ride like a dream. I do alot of trail riding on tight trails with rocks and also do open stuff in fields and singletrack so im just trying to decide on which one to get a ktm 300 xc or ktm 350xcf both 2017 models.
Nice video. Any plans to aquire a TE300 in the future for review?
Not in the very near future. The Husky's are just blue KTMs at this point, so I'll look for other brands first, like Beta for one.
Any difference in vibrations? I've heard people saying that the 2017 models have less vibrations
love your videos, I think it is tile to trade in my 500
Thank you.
my 04 yz250 has plenty of low end power IMO, but it has a pro-circuit platinum pipe and a shorty silencer, oh and boyesen reed's ( cant remember what type though, I think the power reeds)
I have been waiting to see something like this. Could you give better insight? In comparison, how does it feel side to side? Lighter? In what way? Does it feel smaller or the same? Does the riding position differ? How is the suspension front and rear in comparison? Thank you.
I'll have MUCH more on this bike in the future. I can only cover so much at a time :)
Hay Kyle, your videos are awesome man! Was wondering what your thoughts are on the Beta 300 RR 2017? When you get your hands on one please do a review!
It's the next bike in my sights. Probably won't look to get one till next year, but I'm going to try a Beta next.
Great! I look forward to that.
is the vibration of the 2 stroke much less than on the 16 i ask because there are a ton of 15 and 16 xc and xcw's for sale and i dont want to miss a deal on picking one up at a great price.
Yes, the vibration is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced on the 2017 bike.
Where was this filmed? looks great!
would it be possible to have a clutch cam? not to necessarily show what's coming ahead, but a ride to showing you using the clutch?
Not a bad idea....
Hey Kyle. I just got my 2017 KTM 250 XC this week. I live near the same "sagebrush" single track in many of your videos. I would like to do a 2017 250xc vs 300xc comparison if your interested.
Zac Rollins That's a great idea. In fact, wouldn't it be super cool if Kyle included locals in his videos? I never understood why they've been edited out. Nothing wrong with Kyle and Sam but that might add some value. I meet great, like minded people on the trail.
I'm not editing people out...
give it a shot...this guy is offering you ;)
Dirt Bike Channel can you do a review on kx100
I have a 2017 ktm 250xc I asked about 3 different people about my air forks and I can't seem to get an answer, why would I need to add more air is it because of my weight or like my compression?
I never owned a ktm but that 2017 looks amazing I would like to have one of those.
I'm not going to lie. It's pretty nice.
Video editing tip! When rendering your video, if you have an option for the variable bit rate. Make sure to uncheck it, it makes the video blurry randomly. Its sad to tarnish the riding with it. The higher bit rate, the cleaner the video.
UA-cam is the issue from what I can tell and it's with the GoPro footage mostly. These videos look great on the native files on my computers.
How does the 17 compare to the older models on the low end grunt? I have heard the new model is lacking low end.
It may be a bit softer, but it's not as bad as others are making it out to be.
So all in all the yamaha 250's gearing is a little to tall for the engine? What about changing the rear sprocket to shorten all the gears up a little? Would that be a viable option?
No, it's not to tall for the engine. I really like the gearing on it, but 1st gear is quite tall for some of the terrain I ride.
Thats a relief. I have an older 125 that has a first gear thats way to tall, and almost on par with 2nd. So I wasn't sure if it was yamaha or my bike. Thank you for the clarification!
How do u have ur camera mounted on your helmet? I have a GoPro on the side of mine but is always catches branches and in my opinion doesn't look as good as straight on
www.proshotcam.com/
Where are you guys riding at? I think you guys are from Utah but I am not sure. Could you please get us some insight on what trails you are riding? Thanks guy, I like the videos.
Art Bingham They are primarily in Utah, but they don't share the locations of these trails.
I'm riding a 125 exc 2005 and i'm just curious how much more low-rpm power does a 300 xc have? Which 4t engine would you compare the low rpm torque to?
A lot more low end compared to your 125. It's more comparable to the grunt of a 4 stroke 450 but doesn't stall like one and feels about the same weight as your 125. Defiantly different type of power then a 4 stroke, but lots of it nonetheless
You have some experience and I want to ask you a question. I'm 15 years old 5'10 160 do you think I should move up from a kx85 big wheel to a kx250f? I've been riding the 85 for 7 months now
Elijah Hawkins I am 15, 120 lbs, and 5'5". I have a lowering link on my 2008 kx250f and love the power that it has I would definitely recommend that you do it
Is there more power down low on this 300xc than the 350xcf?
You didn't bottom out on that first jump over the pond did you? Still a little curious about the air forks.
No, didn't bottom it out.
Christopher McCann I love the air forks and their so easy to use , and work on ,I don't understand why u wouldn't want them ,they ride great.
nice bike
Doesn't the 350 four stroke technically have more peak horsepower compared to the 300 two stroke? How would you compare the power delivery between the two? Low down, mid range, top end etc? Thanks!
Much more low end torque on the 300 and it will lug down low MUCH better than the 350. Mid range is comparable on the two, and the 350 makes more on top and revs much higher than the 300. I own both of them right now and prefer riding the 300 in almost any situation.
Dirt Bike Channel Cool thanks for the insight. Tough deciding between the two. Still not sure which would be better for the Florida sand down here.
How does the weight feel compare to the 450 4 stroke?
Feels much lighter than those.
Nice to know. I've got a EXC 250 four stroke now, feels lighter then the 450 too. Would the two stroke feel even more lighter you think?
Rider Mark lol a 2 stroke is lighter yes...
sense you have a lot of experience with many models/years of the 300's....iam in the market to buy a near new or perhaps A new 300 Is the new 17 that much better (hopefully power as well) than say a 15 model that i can purchase for about 2k less?? also beta is making a great name for itself as well...it would be nice (if finance allows...lol) for you to test ride and give your un-adulterated opinion as on this competitive bike knocking on ktm's cathedral size door ......much appreciated brother and keep up with your awesome video's!!!
one thing i wish ktm left over was the orange frame...the orange frame would accent nicely with the predominant white plastics..eye appeal really does play a factory to a potential buyer...but hey, one can have it painted if desired..also i see the new beta's are pretty sik looking??!! buts its all a matter of opinion.
I Agree.
Hey Kyle. Can you do a power valve spring comparison video.
I'll put it on the topic list.
Hey Kyle, thanks for the vids. I was wondering if you are still happy with the lectron carb and do you have plans to put it on the 2017
Yes and yes :)
good to know, i was gonna ask the same question as well....lol heard amazing review on the lectron. carb.
I really like your videos big fan, have you ever consider having or reviewing a husqvarna. I'm thinking about buying one
If they weren't even MORE money than the KTMs... I just haven't found a good deal on one.
saucy trails sir
Will u be putting a Lectron carb on this bike? How is the vibration?
I might try the lectron on this bike in the future. Vibration is next to nothing.
Hey Kyle, what jetting are you running on the 17 300?
send me an email and I'll give you the skinny. kyle@dirtbikechannel.com
Great video, can you tell me what your go-pro settings are at?
How do you like it compared to the yz250x?
I have a video on that in my feed.
I need to ride them back to back before making any conclusions, but this bike certainly has the advantage on the low end torque.
I know your busy with other bikes but the Ktm's 150 looks pretty interesting.
I drove a 150 back to back with a 250 on some tight woods trails. The 150 is amazing. I think I might be able to maintain a higher speed on the 150.
kuladeeluxe they seem like great bike. How much bottom end do they have?
Carman E 2017 150 rips i got one with the lectron carb and just ordered vforce 4 reeds for it, the bike stock is unreal, with the lectron its beyond badass, i use it in the trails mainly its snappy as fuck, and just shy of 200 lbs, its a rocket thats a blast to ride. only other bike ill buy is a 300 and ill be keeping the 150 cause i love it.
Ray Eh I just got a 17 husky te300. Getting lectron and reeds and head and cdi.
bought a new 2017 300xc. anyone having any issue with the carb leaking out of the over flow when riding. tried 2 different carbs and both leak gas out of the over flow. if the bike straight up at 90 degrees if i tip it over to about 45 degrees is when it starts leaking.
Pretty much any carb will leak when tipped more than 45 degrees. That is normal.
never had a issue with my 14 300xc leaking gas when i ride. i run the 3 hour harescramble and cant have a carb that leaks everytime i corner. i was just curious if you or some of your viewers was having the same issue.
Thanks.
Michael Illig if ur leaning over just a bit or cornering and gas is coming out then ur float level is to high, simple as that, set ur float height. 17s are known for having incorrect float height, mine was off abit too.
How do you think the air forks fair agains conventional spring forks?
So far, I think these things are very good. More testing/riding needed before I say more.
Dirt Bike Channel alright, I can't wait! Love the videos!
Can u pls do a review on the KTM 200 x-cw. Thx
Happily accepting donations :)
Dose it feel lighter that the 2015?
where are these trails located?
I started on a 250 at 13.
Seems like you rode the YZ much better, like it fit you better
They are both amazing bikes. I love them both, but the KTM has some advantages over the YZ250X. More on that to come in the future.
could i stand up on the 300xc im 5'5"
Dude. Have you seen the image stabilization on the Sony FDR3000X? I bought one after seeing a video of Ricky Carmichael riding around his custom designed Daytona Supercross track. Trust me, just watch some videos of them.
Does this have the counter balancer shaft in it, like the Husky?
Thane Davis yes it has the same motor
Yes, it's the same motor as the Husky. The vibration is significantly reduced. It's great.
Be sure to report on that in the next video. That is the part I am most interested in. It makes all other 2 strokes obsolete.
force accessories bash plate for the 2017 ktm 300 xc
Is this bike only for enduro or could it be used for motocross ?
Ronnie Bell I have two friends with 300’s one is a 300XC and the other has a 250SX that he installed the 300 upgrade kit available from KTM. They are both expert level racers and still compete occasionally at local MX races here in Utah. They love these bikes for desert riding and also MX but they admit they are at a slight disadvantage against the 450’s they race against. So the answer is yes. Many magazine reviews have even said the XC KTM’s are better for MX for non-expert level riders because the suspension is more forgiving than the SX.
i have a ktm 250sx whats the best spring and how much to tighten it?
It's all rider preference brother. I like the red spring, but not everyone does.
what does the red one do and when you tighten it what does that do?
great
Did you sell your yz250x?
what is the difference with the 300 xc-w besides the suspension
Gearing. XC gearing is higher in 1st and 2nd gear.
Dirt Bike Channel Thank you. Great videos! Keep doing them.
As always ...awesome info and video Kyle! KTM IF YOU`RE MONITORING THESE ...QUIT SANDBAGGING, KYLE NEEDS TO BE ON THE PAYROLL! We`re getting more information from one of our own, than we`ll ever get from your high dollar ad agencies! Real info from real people, goes a long way in helping us make our decisions..
KTM may not be listening Drew, but I am. Thanks for the compliment.
when are you gonna get your hands on a beta 300rr lol
2017.
