  • How To Sing Better For Girls - COMPLETE - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    Often times girls/women ask me "How can I increase my belting register?"
    Many speak of their voices as being too soft or airy.
    Others say they just can't get power, stamina, and longevity without going hoarse.
    While it is true, there are 25 different classifications for the voice, and they all resonate very differently, there is absolutely a way to maximize the strength of YOUR instrument.
    I know I have said this many times, but it is worth repeating.
    The voice is a group of muscles.
    And just like any muscle in your body, it grows as such.
    If you know how to hit the gym, those muscles will grow, and grow big.
    In this video, I discuss how this is done.
    I hope you find this video helpful.

    My chorus teacher never allows us to belt at all,she always makes us do the “airy flutey”tone sadly...I use your techniques in the class but my teacher says that I sing “to loud”.Any advice

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 років тому +33

      That's because in a chorus, the teacher wants everyone to blend into one hooty sound. The last thing she wants is for any one voice to be heard in the sound. If you want to be heard as an individual, you will need to join a small group or do solos.

It makes so much sense what you said about the head voice being favored because that is what I am used to. I am hoping your videos will helpe beef up my chest voice like I've always wanted. Hey Ken, i think it,s great you support and teach all these young talented female singers world wide.
    I am one of the older generation and grew up with Melanie (Safka), Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson etc. All amazing female singers. It,s great watching the new generation is knocking at the door!
    I am very impressed by the skills and vocal presention from one of your students:Alyona Yarushina .
    I really enjoy her covers, especiality "Alone" (Heart) and "Total eclips from the heart" (Bonnie Tyler). She did an amazing job here and both covers can actually compete with the orininal versions.
    Glad to hear young musicians can appreciate the good old stuff !

    I think I may be one of the only women who doesn't care all that much about "belting" and increasing her higher range, but is far more concerned with extending and strengthening her lower range. :-P
    My range is almost exactly the textbook contralto range (in my case, F3 to F5), but the lowest couple of half-steps are a bit weak and difficult to project with. I'd really love to not only strengthen what notes I already have, but reach a few half steps lower if at all possible (ideally, I'd love to eventually get to a usable D3). Is this possible/realistic? Can you recommend exercises for increasing/strengthening the lower range for women?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 років тому +18

      Yes, Jennifer. As I said in the video, one of the main things that is so often not taught to women is the use of the chest voice to its fullest capacity. Conductors and choir directors are so focused on the high notes, that women are almost exclusively taught to use only head voice. That leaves an entire vocal register to atrophy. Instead, women should grow their entire voice, including the seldom-used lowest notes of chest voice, with strength and power when warranted. Just doing lower chest scales, and even doing descending scales that push the envelope of how strongly you can go to your lowest tones.

    • @whitefantom
      @whitefantom 5 років тому +9

      Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I grew up singing along with pretty much exclusively male pop/rock singers (i.e. Richard Marx, Corey Hart, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, etc.) and developed my voice that way rather than singing in a more typically "female" way. I've always been most comfortable and had the most power and clarity in my chest voice (I'd actually say my head voice is the area that's most likely a bit "atrophied" from lack of consistent use), so it's possible I may already be doing as much as my vocal chords are capable of on the lower end. (Though I did manage to gain a half step somewhere over the years, either through age or practice, because my lowest note used to be F#3...so I'll keep practicing and see if I can bump it down some more :-) )

    I finally figured out what my problem is bc of this video. My "chest voice" is really under developed...honestly, it's to the point I just realized that I would be calling to a thief in head voice. I have always sung totally without belly breathing. It makes me wonder how much better I would be with more training. I will be going through all if your vids though. Thanks so much!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 років тому +2

      Danielle Lambert The answer is real vocal training. Tips are not sufficient. You need techniques that work. If you actually want to improve, you should follow a complete course and do mostly workouts that are designed to build your voice. You can sing all day everyday, but if you aren't learning proper vocal techniques and practicing correctly, you could actually be embedding bad habits and harming your voice, rather than building it. Ideally, you would spend at least an hour per day on actual workouts, and then any additional time using proper vocal methods on songs. Check out my course: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/

    Hey ken How does bodybuilding or weightlifting affect a singer's voice? Does it help or negatively affect professional singing?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 років тому +8

      achintha, one way it can sometimes be a negative is if the bodybuilder had difficulty relaxing in the abdominals. If they are used to tensing the abs in order to build a six pack, they may get "bound-up" with abdominal tension when they need to be relaxing, between support cycles. The other side of that same coin is that the bodybuilder may have great core strength, which can really help with abdominal support, as long as you properly apply relaxation in-between breaths.

    • @neildaniels2722
      @neildaniels2722 5 років тому

      Would doing sit ups help with abdominal support for singing?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 років тому +6

      Yes, they help if you can translate the amount of effort of a situp into how much abdominal strength needs to be applied to diaphragmatic support. In the case of support, your use of the muscles is to SLOW DOWN/RESIST the release of air. That is our control mechanism.

    Does ping help to reduce the excess air that some of us produce? Whenever I do the exercises in volumes 1, 2 and 3 I end up with a sore throat and it feels very dry. I am assuming this happens because I am airy, so just wondering how to reduce the air... I assume ping helps keep the cords , and maybe support helps with t he air as well..... I'm such a great fan of your vidoes and techniques. Music is my passion and singing is beyond that. Could you kindly make vidoes with 30 days challenge or something like that trageting the girls this time please? I would be so greatful if you did that to me. That would be of so much help to me and may be many people like me. Thank you for your vidoes. I wish you were in Australia. Lots of love and respect legend. ☺

    What vocal type is Gabriella?

      Alto, but with a very extended range, reaching well up into soprano.

      You watch all of my free videos that you can and you practice a lot on all of the exercises I show you in my free videos. That will help you to get ready for when you really CAN get my course.

      It's best to use a CD or tape with exercises on them so that you are certain to exercise the right notes.

    I'll spam this comment until it becomes reality:
    I'm still waiting for a cover of ''18 and Life'' performed Gabriela Gunčíková!!!!
    Sorry but Gabriela Gunčíková has a special place in my heart...
    I just think that she has the proper skills and vocal strength to totally BOSS a song like ''18 and Life''!!!!

      I have a home course that you can learn at home on your own time, and I also give skype lessons to students all over the world. I am presently in the process of relocating, after my home in Hawaii was destroyed in the recent eruptions. Check out my web site.

    I have a very weird voice, its a very deep female voice but light at the same time. When I sing I go from my mutual voice to a low note that is way too low and then my throat closes off

      Time to learn to keep your throat open and build your voice correctly.
