    As a cellist who has played these movements over a lifetime and modestly appreciate the difficulties....I am blown away by the skill of Xavier. On a cello is one thing but on an instrument requiring greater spans it must be like climbing a staircase where the treads are twice the height of normal stairs. Bravo !

    • @Kiwi2375
      @Kiwi2375 Рік тому +3

      The difficulty is the string crossing and making it as smooth and flowing as a cellist can play it.

      @@Kiwi2375 Yes Elizabeth...and comparing how a cellist usually plays many passages 'legato' rather than the majority of notes bowed separately by the bassist, that challenge to play 'smooth and flowing' as you described, is clear. Impressive.

    Beaucoup de facilité dans le jeu, Xavier Foley transcende la contrebasse grâce à son pur talent. Reste ici son interprétation de cette suite et son parti pris très personnel. On n'est pas obligé de tout aimer dans ces respirations quelquefois surprenantes mais globalement, il y a là un sens du phrasé très intéressant. Je suis persuadé que dans l'avenir Xavier sera capable d'aller plus loin dans cette recherche. En attendant, bravo !

    Just watched this and wished I had the joy of playing a Bass violin. This is a memorable classic that I'll master one day soon. I know the prelude of course... which bassist doesn't learn to play it pizzicato at least on bass guitar and fingernail pick it on acoustic guitar? Even Pianists will learn it just to sound it in it's entirety. I'm going to try to figure it out by ear only. Thank You Mr. Foley. :-)

      Bass violin. do you mean double bass or the ancient predecessor to cello that was abandoned 2 years after invention? if you mean double bass the term "bass violin" just hurt the souls of every bassist know to man. -a bassist still waiting for his 204 measure of rest to end so he can actually play with the orchestra

    I have be messing with this piece on bass for years, but I never actually considered playing it in this octave. Did you start by transcribing it into this octave?

    • @elishamartinthechannel1859
      @elishamartinthechannel1859 3 роки тому

      Hey, lol I know I'm not Foley but I am a bassist in college where Bach is almost humorously considered a rite of passage.
      In order to play it in this octave transcription isn't necessary. There are commonly accepted editions of this Bach suite used for basses that are already transcribed. Examples being maybe an Edgar Meyer, Jeff Bradetich, or Gary Karr edition to name a few.
      However as a student of Luis Gomez, FIU and a yearly student of Jeff Bradetich I'd reccomend the Bradetich Edition.
      Happy playing

      Xavier Foley, thank you for sharing this video with us. I am learning a lesson from you. To stay calm and not to lose the focus when the stop comes out unexpectedly. Very well done. I have also been learning those fingering choices. They are helping me fix some issues in my execution of this suite on the double bass. It is also encouraging, by giving me more confidence that it is ok to keep playing it even when something undesired happens.
      This video is helping me improve, and inspiring me. Thank you!
