Outstanding tutorial. This lesson services to learn cello finger board as well! Thank you for shearing your expertise! I am currently learning cello and allow me to tell you that, the double bass, violincello and violin in my eyes are the most beautiful instruments ever created. I simply love them!
I love it. I just love it. You state and clearly demonstrate principles useful in planning fingering for this and other pieces on the bass in 4ths, and on other instruments as well.
I play the bass tuned in 5ths C1 G1 D2 A2. I am learning Suite1 at bass pitch, 8vb cello. I _could_ use most if not all the cello fingerings, instead I stay in low positions. It's easier, and that enables me to play more musically. Where that's not true, I use the cello fingering.
There are problems to be solved when multiple stops include the C and G strings, or there are close 3rds in low positions, otherwise nearly all the first suite sits very well on the bass in 5ths.
I started with the Courante, much because it is your introductory music for many of your lessons. I am working on the Minuets and Gigue. Next I will start the Allemande, then the Prelude and finally the Sarabande. (The chords make this hardest.)
My experience has been that 80% of what is taught in a lesson is musicianship. Your lessons are valuable for technical and musicianship reasons. Please keep them coming.
That's great David, it sounds like you're doing a lot of good things! I think the Sarabande might be my favorite movement, but like you said, those chords make it so tough. The whole suite is just beautiful - enjoy :)
The Sarabande is the most beautiful and may be the most challenging of the movements in this suite. The Prelude which you teach here is second only to the Sarabande difficulty.
I am currently transitioning from bass-guitar to doublebass... One thing, that blows my right now is, that I could have use my thumb, so I could play with my fourth finger instead of the fifth. - I have to try this now :-D

Thanks for the tips. Could you do some more fingering tips? I can't work out how you're playing bars 20 and 21. Watching at 1/2 speed, you seem to be playing the pedal C# and C (speaking in G not solo tuning) on the E string but about 3 or 4 semitones too high. Is your E string tuned low in some way? Thanks.
Lauren -great lesson, thanks. Just listening to it makes the mind sing. I was just wondering about the fingering for the last 4 notes of bar 4. The B-G would be 1 - 2, but what do you recommend for B - F# ?

This is the only time I've heard a bassist do this without it being sharp
I guessing the position markers (dots) might have something to do with that.
There is so much area to cover in a 3D field that I wonder why more bass players don’t use them more. Particularly in improvised music where you are inventing patterns on the spot and superimposing shapes on top of one another to create harmonic color. The aversion to markers leave bassists either playing rote patterns over harmonic progressions or playing so out of tune that the audience hears a muddled bass solo and starts talking 😎

What type of rosin do you use? I am a beginner player and have recently switched from Pop's to Larica Gold VI. However, I'm looking to try as many types as possible. Thanks!
I recall Lauren saying before that she uses Pops.
I tried Nyman's Swedish and the clear non allergenic synthetic rosin, but I keep going back to Pops. While Pops does dust on the bass, it also makes the hair vibrate the string nicely. Be sure to wipe your bass every time when you finish playing regardless of the kind of rosin you use. It will build up and it is very difficult to remove.
