    I had an albino skunk for years named Gandalf when I was a teenager. Raised him from a kit. Now they're illegal to own in GA (I owned him in the 1980s when it was legal). They are so full of personality, so mischievous, and so sweet!

    Your little skunk is so cute and I just love how well your dogs treat him/her. I would absolutely love to be able to have skunks for pets, but I unfortunately live in a state where it's illegal to own skunks so I have to resort to caring for the wild ones. For the past 5 years or so, I have been feeding our neighborhood skunks on a nightly basis and I've never been bitten or sprayed. They are such sweet animals who are so misunderstood. During the wintertime, I'll usually have 2 or 3 skunks come each night to eat, but in the summer months my yard fills up with as many as 30 of them a night. We have a big wooden fence that surrounds our backyard, and each night they make their way under our fence and wait under some bushes for me to emerge with their dinner. As soon as they hear me step out onto the patio, here they all come running and gather under my feet on my patio and eat until they're full. I give them a variety of nuts, fruits, leftover meat, hot dogs, sunflower kernels, and etc....but their favorite treat has to be popcorn, and since my son works at a movie theater, I'm never out of fresh popcorn. Some of the skunks that come have been coming since they were babies, so I get to know them well and can tell them apart by their markings. This year I have 5 little baby skunks who I believe have recently lost their mother because they all hang out in my backyard alone until sunrise while the other babies who come leave with their mom's. The 5 orphans live under my neighbors shed that is right up against my fence, so at least I can keep an eye on them. I just hope people will quit treating skunks as these evil creatures whose only purpose in life is to spray them, give them rabies, and to destroy their yards. It's simply not the case at all. My advice to people is to just leave the skunks alone and they will never bother you at all. In fact, they're actually good to have around your house because their favorite foods include mice, any and all insects, and other critters you might not want invading your yard and home.

      N Slim...You couldn’t be more wrong about just leave them alone... We have skunks in our neighborhoods that destroy lawns as they search for grubs and worms. Those skunks are expert diggers and destroy even more lawn by digging underneath fences in order to gain access to back yards. Not helpful in the least, so now all skunks are trapped and killed by using various and effective kill methods. Some residents have reported that they notice the population dwindling and a significant reduction in lawn damage. Skunks serve zero purpose and are stinky disease carrying nuisance critters. When one dies, well that’s one less nuisance to be concerned about.

    • @mrsmelons5553
      @mrsmelons5553 3 місяці тому

      Lawns are stupid. Waste of time and money, they need pesticides, they are monoculture… They are an nvironmental disaster. Especially here in the west where water is scarce and people still insist on having a lush Kentucky bluegrass carpet in the middle of the fucking desert. Try planting more flowers and having beds with bark or wood chips where it doesn’t matter if they dig a little.

    • @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle
      @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle  4 роки тому

      I’m excited that you want a pet skunk!!! Since I am not sure about your specific situation, I am going to give a broad answer. Before getting a pet skunk, make sure it is legal to own one in your state. If you are allowed, then most states require some type of permit to own a skunk, which means you must get one from a permitted breeder...meaning taking one from the wild is not allowed. Often times the breeder will descent the skunk before you purchase it, which was the case for me. Before owning a skunk, make sure you secure a vet that takes care of exotic animals such as skunks. These vets will also descent a skunk if needed, but will likely require seeing your permit first. A good resource for skunk owners is Skunk Haven: www.skunkhaven.net . Hope this helps you, and have fun with your skunk when you get one!!!

    Cute animals :) but... I have a question :) I am sorry but this is a stereotype question because I don't know much about this cute animals. How do they smell? What is they everyday smell? Greetings from Poland :)

    • @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle
      @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle  5 років тому +2

      Hey Ivan, great question. Skunks can typically spray up to 15 feet (roughly 4.5 meters), and when they do, it smells horrible. However, domesticated skunks such as mine have their scent glands removed when they are babies, so they can't spray. I'll admit though, sometimes when he gets excited and tries to spray it comes out as a skunk scented fart, but it's not too bad. He has a scent like any other animal would have in the house, but it's not too bad.

  • @azaramoon4027
    @azaramoon4027 7 років тому +23

    Are there scent glands deactivated when you get them as pets? They are adorable!!!!

    • @russianskunk11
      @russianskunk11 7 років тому +25

      Yep, they generally have them removed when they're babies. But some owners don't get them descented, like in the UK where it's deemed an unnecessary surgery and therefore illegal. If you train them well though and give them plenty of love and respect, you usually won't have any problems outside of the rare accident. Wild skunks don't want to spray unless they have to, and the same goes for domestic ones.
      You might have also noticed in the video that the skunk had a habit of tackling the dogs with its butt. Just like how dogs play by biting and tumbling, or how cats play by swatting and pouncing, skunks play by practice spraying and stomping. It's perhaps the most adorable thing in the history of reality. X3
      They oftentimes get going too fast and then suddenly put on the stomp-brakes, causing them to nearly faceplant like at 2:48
      I have to stop myself, if I keep watching skunk videos my heart might explode. Or I'll just want to keep talking about them all day.

    I have a wild skunk living under the shed near my car. Scared the heck out of me the first time I encountered it. I scared it too. It ran away to hide under the shed and got slightly stuck, I almost wet myself laughing watching it try to get back under! Anyway, we put up with each other on the mornings we meet, no smell, no scare for either of us. I will let it stay there till spring, then wall off the hole it made again.

    These pet skunks are usually descented and also spayed or neutered which helps control their behavior. I remember seeing them in Ohio in pet shops years ago. You can also purchase other wild animals such as foxes, raccoons, and bobcats as well. All are highly recommended to be spayed or neutered and scent glands removed. I don't think the bobcats would be good pets because you also have to declaw them to prevent serious injury.

But I don't know how to get one that is already de-scented and still a baby. I really want one to be a companion and fun friend. Hey Scott...skunks do make great companions! Love to cuddle with Marv every morning. First, make sure it is legal to own a skunk in the state you reside in. If it is, be sure to follow through with proper permits at both the state and local level. This could be a state permit from the Department of Natural Resources as well as a city permit from animal control. Skunk Haven is a great resource for starting to navigate laws pertaining to skunks as well as general skunk care: www.skunkhaven.net/StatesForm.htm As for buying one, I purchased mine from www.freewebs.com/wessexoticanimals/prices.htm already descented. A quick internet search in your area might show additional places. Here's another link, showing people who are selling skunks www.exoticanimalsforsale.net/skunks-for-sale.asp. Best of luck!

    • @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle

      Good question…most pet skunks are descented, so they can’t actually spray. They also would prefer not to spray in most cases. As long as you don’t startle them, they usually won’t spray.

    • @GummyTheBlueCat

      @@AdventurousHeartRachelNagleAlso, last question, isn’t it illegal to have skunks as pets?

    • @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle
      @AdventurousHeartRachelNagle  3 місяці тому +1

      Also a good question…it all depends on your state and local laws. Where you live, yes, it could be illegal; however, where I live it is legal as long as I get a proper permit and purchase one that was born and raised in captivity. It would still be illegal to take one from the wild and make it a pet. It’s important to know the laws where you live as they are very different from place to place.

      My skunks are not de-scented, and don't spray. My female is 3, and has never sprayed. My little boy is 1, and has sprayed when he was young, but never anymore. When they are juveniles, their spray isn't up to full strength yet, and the smell goes away in a day. They're escae artists, and if one gets loose, they need their defenses intact.
