Running with my Pet Skunk

- My pet skunk, Marv, became jealous of the dogs always getting to go for runs, so with a little food encouragement he gets to go for runs too...though not at the same time as the dogs! Sometimes we'll run 3 laps around the pond or about 3/4 mile. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when the vet told me that perhaps Marv gets a little more exercise than most pet skunks. Note: Skunks don't have good homing skills like dogs, so you MUST always keep a very close eye on your skunk. He can't run free like a dog and then be expected to find his way back home. Have fun on your next pet adventure!

I live in the countryside and am guilty of feeding a mama skunk and her babies heathy for skunks food because they are so darn cute to watch at night from the window on the deck. It's pretty much the worst thing I do except not volunteer enough. Animals are to be cherished although I don't like parasites and spiders scare me but I appreciate they eat parasites so if I find one in my house I catch it in a glass and envelope and take it 2 miles from my house. I exaggerated the distance on that last bit.

I live in an urban setting, so taking my skunks out for runs wasn't possible. It was Professor Moriarty who would have needed the run the most, the way he vacuumed up his food, and then stole from Gherkin the Mighty, and Agent Cooper. I did my best to keep them healthy and happy. I built them a ramp, and then they joined me in bed, as well as destroying two mattresses, because they are born to dig. I miss them, they were such a challenge, making sure they had the right foods, making sure they had wormer monthly, and 250 mg of taurine a day, like cats need.

Yes, their fur is actually quite soft. Before I got a skunk, I thought they would have coarse feeling hair, but it is pleasantly soft!

Love skunks, kinda wish I could have one as a pet. But not only are they not legal here, but my home doesn't have central cooling. Skunks deserve more than a single window unit.

Lol...I guess the skunk just wanted to play! As long as the skunk wasn’t stomping his feet or turning his butt towards you your risk of getting sprayed was likely minimal. It can definitely be a scary moment though. Most times skunks don’t really want to spray you either!

Has it ever sprayed?
Most pet skunks, including Marv, are descented when they are babies, so they can’t spray. With that said, sometimes he still farts and it smells a little skunky!!! I guess that is why they sometimes call skunks “fart squirrels!”
Although the lady has a kind heart she needs to realize Skunks are slow animals, can't see very well and are nocturnal. Just saying.

Marv is my pet and is descented, so he can’t spray me. With that said sometimes he still gets feisty from time to time. Some mornings when he is feeling energetic in the house, he will butt block me and do a fun move backwards. Sometimes he’ll even try to nibble at my toes. This usually means he has some energy and wants to go for a run, so I will run through the house and he will “chase” me. Then, we go get breakfast!

Lol…yes, that is me. No sanctuary….just a girl with a love for animals and dedicated to following the adventures in my heart and encouraging others to do the same. By profession, I manage an outdoor recreation program for a local park district.

Is it true Skunk has a smell?
Yes, if a skunk sprays you, it definitely has a pungent odor. If they don't/can't spray you, then no, they don't smell. Many pet skunks, especially in the US, are descented, so they can't spray.
