- A look at Konami's 1996 trailer for the 3DO of Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid. For those unaware, Metal Gear Solid originally began life as a 3DO game before shifting development for the PS1.
In this early trailer we can see how much of the game we know today was originally supposed to look like.

Konami had a weird fetish for the 3DO at the time... They made like, 5 arcade machines based on 3DO hardware.
I've noticed that too. I'm guessing they really liked the hardware
@@st1ka if I'm not mistaken, not only the hardware was open, despite not free to use, but also there wasn't any publisher cost for the platform. $$$$$$$$$
My pops scored a 3do RIGHT when it released at a flea market. Great price. It was like 700 bucks back then, like 1,300 now. We got ours for cheap. I LOVED that system and still do. When gex released it was great. And that one army top down game... Good memories.
For a 3DO it looks nice. Can you imagine in an alternate universe where MGS1 would’ve been on the 3DO instead of the PlayStation.
Metal Gear 1 and 2 were never on the Master System, and the less spoken about whatever was made for the NES, the better.
the 3DO was way more influent than anyone gives it credit for nowadays! Even though it arrived early and too expensive, I feel like it maybe could have kept going if they managed it better
I love the 3do, pretty interesting
Indeed, imagine what could have been
Man, this would've changed things, I think, for the 3DO's prospects.
Indeed, though I wonder if the 3do could run the proper?
@@st1ka The 3DO is relatively comparable to the PS1 (hardware is of course entirely different, but it had similar capabilities in many areas); it would have been "different" but it could definitely have run some similar version of Metal Gear Solid. It's lack of decent 3D games is more due to it's short lifespan and lack of sales, meaning no one ever got to learn the sorts of tricks you need to really take advantage of the system. Popular systems like PS1 have more total developers and are supported for a longer amount of time, so it's more likely for there to be games that really push the system.
Konami's only game for the 3DO was Policenauts, but that does lend some credence to the possibility they would have targeted it at some point, until it became clear the PS1 would be the winner in that war. In Japan, the Saturn, 3DO, and PS1 were all viable platforms for a few years.
@shawnmulligan3471 ah that makes sense. I'd love to see what the system could do. I think the most graphically impressive game I've seen on it was killing time
@@shawnmulligan3471 3DO hardware is closer to Saturn VDP1 but with much more anemic CPU. It shares some of the limitations with Saturn. It can not compete with PS1 in perf, but I can see MGS simplified enough to run on it.
@@noop9k The CPU is definitely weaker, but it's also ARM, with a reasonable 3D accelerator for the time, which would maybe have been easier to develop for than the weird dual-CPU / dual-GPU crazy thing the Saturn ended up with. One of the most interesting things about pre-360/ps3 era systems was that they were architecturally different, not just slower/faster, so you would sometimes get interestingly different versions of the same game on each system, due to programming for that system's strengths.
No! Tomb Raider also was being developed for 3DO prior to Playstation. In a world where the 3DO got Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid as timed exclusives, we would probably be on the Panasonic M5 by now. Oh, it still hurts that the M2 was never released. This is torture.

Typo on "intended" at 0:43.
Whoops!
Well since the 3do didn't had a second controller port we would never be able to defeat mantis
Such a smooth transition for a loop.
Maravilhoso
Muito obrigado! ^^
I love imagining, but I think the graphics look too good for 3DO. The polygon count on the characters alone would crash a commercial system.
Indeed, the trailer is using pre rendered footage
Well, that Gray Gox footage come from a legendary trailer that was in some (well, kinda lots of) PS1 demos, a trailer that contains lots of stuff that weren't in MGS or were impossible to perform, like the bombing of Shadow Moses with hundreds of C4 explosives. I didn't know in came from this source!
yep I found two versions of this trailer. One with PS1 button prompts and another without them.
@@st1ka really?? That's incredibile!
NOOOOO! REALLY? 3DO?! Jesus... I really learned something here. Cheers st1ker.
We maybe so so far apart, and I'm not really part of the retro community thanx to having to sell all my systems and therefore living off emulation...oh so thankful for emulation...buuuutttt....thank you for teaching me a new factoid! Love ya my guy!! XxxmoixxxXx
Haha glad i could help
Considering that the first 2 Metal Gear games were for the MSX, this checks out.
IMAGINE SOME FAN MAKING A PORT FOR 3DO TODAY😮😮😮😮
just like all the ones people make now for nes etc.
I think the audio woulda been better on 3DO but nothing else
Street fighter 2 turbo, is legendary for that, only other game i recall was some fantasy rpg 3d thing but its music was so crisp that i despised PlayStation initially.
Someone's making a tomb raider port it runs even worse than the saturn version but it's still really impressive.
@@thegreatbritishgamer751 awesome, would be crazy to try & port over resident evil 1,2, & nemesis.
It’d be impossible probably to be exact same BUT if the emphasized sound & other atmospheric tricks they could make something legitimately interesting.👍
3do gang lets go
heck yeah!
I think the green triangle is the give away. Wicked channel by the way mate - your accent just makes it incredibly watchable i reckon.
Your accent paired with your perfectly fluent English is a pleasure to listen to!
Haha thank you
@@st1ka OH my gosh you're Portuguese! I totally thought that accent was Russian! How funny, you're the third gaming yotuber I've subscribed to recently whose mother tongue is Portuguese, but the other two are from Brazil. I guess your accents are quite different. Actually I'll soon find out firsthand since I have family who moved to Madeira, and I plan to visit once I've moved to Mexico.
Wow I feel like one of those rpg NPCs who spill their whole life story. Anyway, cheers from Seattle!
@@PixelPusher1 haha that's awesome. If you go to Madeira be sure to try their banana liquor
These 3DO graphics are more likely early PS2 graphics
If this game ever comes to be and looked like that ... Damn ... Dome 3DOs more would be sold, for sure
I WANT IT
The 3DO... HAHAHAHAHAHAH LOL
Yeah i was pretty shocked but I'd love to see how it would work
You do know Nintendo and SEGA fans back then were laughing at the MSX, right?
Ah, so this is where all those pic comes from... A game magazine was reviewing Metal Gear Solid demo, it's only one page but it had some screenshots... Which is nothing like we get on PS1 MGS (demo or full version)... This left me confused for a very long time, where those pictures come from? Now I know the answer.
It would’ve been the best game on the 3do
Your short was the first in my suggestions. Put your channel title in the thumbnail next time ;)
Ah, shorts don't let you use thumbnails sadly >_>
you can see that button is fake
Is it possible for game development for the console? If so who & when
Da Tree D O
the 3DO had games? /s
hah! I quite like the 3do too, it's some really interesting games ^^
Because?
Precedence. Metal Gear 1 and 2 were on the MSX, a console even more obscure than the 3DO.
Where is the Master System ports?
This is the biggest lie I've ever heard
Next you'll say that Metal Gear 1 and 2 were on the Master System?
