Ya in the US this style was more early 90s. Maybe late 80s but definitely saw more of what Carreys rep'n here in the 1990s. The 80s were a bit different. Im not much of a style guy so its hard to explain but I know it when I see it.
The fact that Jim was self aware about it though is pretty unusual to me. He realized how funny-looking it was even back when it was supposed to be fashionable.

Seinfeld is right in his recent comments about late night TV hosts. So many hosts today are using each guest to showcase their own wit and talent, instead of what Carson did, which was to bring out anything he could from the guest.

Jim is a comedic genius. Best physical comedian in eight decades. His performance in “Mask” was brilliant. He had to learn to handle the pain of his Grinch costume from a Navy Seal. True. Now that's commitment! He’s right up there with Charles Chaplin. "Alllllllll righty then!"
Sounds like he brought people a lot of joy during school. The entire 15 minute act at the end of class is so fun! And yes, the jacket is so amazing!

One of the many reasons why Carson was a gem in the talk show world was that he had the best laugh. Totally spontaneous and real and from the heart. On the contrary Letterman had many fake laughs. Another reason he was a true gentleman and always respectful and always letted his guests shine whilst he himself remained in the background from where he secretly directed the show.
Him and Ed. I always loved hearing Ed's laugh in the background.

Johnny Carson was always a class act as a talk show host. He hosted the tonight show for over 30 years - longer then anyone. He took it over from Jack Parr back in the 60's when it was based in NYC and went Live at 11:30. They moved the production to Malibu but still kept the 11:30 EST time slot. No other talk show host past or present can hold a candle to JC - including David Letterman (who is pure NY if u ask me and annoying). May he forever RIP
Carson hosted The Tonight Show for 29 years. Letterman hosted Late Night and Late Show for a combined 33 years.
Jim Carrey is one of the funniest physical comedians since Jerry Lewis. Although worlds apart he has that style that comedians like him need to perform, His facial features for some reason make me laugh.
I think it's cool that at that moment in time..he had no idea he was going to be making over 20 Million a film.....people who know him know he's the same guy then as he is today..talented, slapstick silly and kind hearted. Well done Jim

The amazing thing about this is that Johnny has been doing this show for 30 years by this point and had seen it all. But he was still blown away by this 29 year old kid. No one had ever done comedy this way before and Johnny recognized that.

But just watching this for a few minutes, he has so much class, charisma and "cool", for lack of a better word. Calm, professional and confident, he makes you feel "at home" and comfortable. Great physical comedic actor one of the last. Every movement and sound effect he made would have me in tears. One of my favorite scenes is when he was making Steve Carrol mumble in Bruce Almighty
Such talent, the poltergeist was Oscar worthy, too bad there isn’t a movie with 90 minutes of just that.
I think that reference was already too old for the audience even in 1991. Probably didn't help that I think that face-melting scene was always cut out on TV airings.

@Dick Burns - No he put out a couple of good movies after that, his issues started when he did that Andy Kaufman film. In 2017 they did a bio of that movie with Jim talking about it. You will notice that making that movie literally made Jim Carrey crazy. He truly gained mental health issues after that movie and if you watch the bio of it you will see it in his eyes. I liked Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar but I think his best work was that movie the number 23. I always felt he would make a good dramatic actor with a touch of evil, he should do a serial killer type role. But lately with all his anti_ Conservative BS he has ruined his chances of having another hit movie.
