    Why is this video making such a huge deal over what are pretty much universal business attire dress rules? MOST professional jobs won't let you wear unconventional hair or hair colors, more than two rings per hand (that's generous to begin with), have visible tattoos, etc....

    • @KateSitka
      @KateSitka 7 років тому +22

      milkjamjuice the “court heel” shoes are a dangerous and sexist requirement. Female flight attendants who are responsible for the passengers lives will be required to go barefoot in the event of an emergency landing, because heels puncture emergency exit slides.
      For safety, all flight attendants SHOULD be required to wear flats.
      Some flight attendant unions have been fighting to get this ridiculous and unsafe dress code changed.

    • @lo-fi-meditation
      @lo-fi-meditation 6 років тому +10

      Flight attendants aren't professionals they're air waitresses (with survival training) that are still, in general, treated like waitresses in rural Bosnia are. Meaning that they ought to be pretty and the male customer should be given something to wank off to in the plane loo if he so chooses.
      Also, anyone who must wear hight heels as part of her uniform and can't replace them with flats without getting in trouble isn't a professional, they're very, very low at the corporate ladder.
      Same goes for make up. If you can't choose not to plaster yourself with make up you aren't a professional woman.
      BTW, as I was mulling over if I were too harsh on the industry, after all we all love seeing beautiful people, I read Kate's comment. So, the plane companies will sacrifice safety to have their flight attendants look sexier! (The only purpose of high heels is to make a woman taller, elongate her legs, and make her walk sexier). Enough said.

    I don't think that the weight requirements are a problem, the airline is allowed to have weight requirements if they think it is safer, and for the people they let go, most of them may have been women. Not because of sexism, but because the women did not meet the weight requirements. The flight attendants I've seen have also been mostly women, so it would make sense that the amount of women let go compared to amount of men is proportionate to amount of women working there and amount of men. In all, the airline can do what they want with requirements, especially if nothing has been enforced.

      It's not only a matter of looking good or to be able to fit in the narrow spaces between the rows of seats. It's also a matter of money : the heavier you are, the more it will require fuel for the plane. I know, it sounds silly, but quite a few companies replaced plane manuels by tablets to save weight, therefore fuel. So I'm pretty sure it goes for the flying personnel.

  • @shafaghghose1456
    @shafaghghose1456 7 років тому +67

    In my opinion almost all these rules are nice and logical. When people want to travel by plane, the most important thing for them is safety and if the flight crews can give them that feeling, they would have a relaxed journey with peace of mind. When the flight crew look neat and tidy with good hygiene with beautiful classic enhanced natural beauty, it gives feeling of trust, peace and safety to the passengers and subconsciously they feel safe and taken care of. Also knowing that they are tall enough to take care of everything when needed helps us not to worry about anything while in the flight... I travel very often and I can notice the impotence of these rules, as I've been in very good flights and not good ones as well. So I could feel the difference visibly.

      @@soniquecat4745 A nice outfit that you could work in is okay, as well as a good look, but heels are not helpful in emergency situations where you have to run, in performing CPR, delivering children, or in any other medical emergency, restraining an out of control passenger, fighting someone(s) in a hostile takeover, lifting someone over your shoulder to them carry out in an evacuation, or helping someone into a raft. (All duties of a stewardess/flight attendant). While working as a school nurse, we all had to watch a video of a supposed woman nurse practitioner who was very pretty and stylish with impeccable make-up and hair style, dealing with different medical emergencies. Along with wearing a white lab coat, she was wearing high heels on her way to an emergency. The group of nurses called out together how laughable it was that she was wearing high heels in her position. They noted how impracticable it was to wear heels in any medical or nursing role, especially when you would have to hurry to an emergency. There is no reason that an airline can't come up with stylish, classy looking shoes without high heels, which could be practical in a stewardess' line of work.

    The weight requirement is probably the most necessary due to the aisle width in planes and the need to be able to reach all the way to the window seat easily (given that the space between rows in coach (or as I refer to it, "steerage") is fairly slim. Also the weight requirement is also a historical holdover from early in the industry when everything was weighed, even luggage and passengers.

    • @winterfrost8623

      Asking for permission from a company to get married is only applied in the middle east, it's a very rare scenario therefore it's not a "requirement" to most people who want to become flight attendants, as the video suggests. Also the story at the beginning of the video with stuffing women in overhead compartments isnt a requirement either, it's just something that happened once and taken out of context for this video.

    I don't think the weight requirement is too extreme (the air india probably is). If you have obese flight attendants, it does decrease the 'attractiveness' of flying with the airline, wether you like it or not, as well as safety issues. Flight attendants should be physically fit if they are supposed to help people survive. An obese flight attendant, regardless of gender, might potentially cause a jam inside the exits, as well as potentially not being physically fit enough to force open or even open the doors of an aircraft, which can become hard to do.

  • @Astro2024
    @Astro2024 7 років тому +265

    "Do you think having a weight requirement is taking things too far?" I don't know, why don't we let people bring 60 pounds of carry on luggage on as well? Any weight you add to a plane hinders its performance during takeoff, cruise, and landing. Gravity gives no fucks about your precious sensibilities. Weight requirements should extend to all passengers as well. Give people an incentive to lose that weight for a trip to Cancun. Would probably lower the obesity rate too. Why do you think there's weight limits on elevators???

    The pregnancy one makes sense, if u are pregnant, there's a health risk when flying & there's a safety risk b/c flight attendants are there to keep others safe & being pregnant will get in the way. Also, many things can happen on a plane that could possibly kill an unborn child so even if the company didn't fire them, I think they would've taken a leave or quit since pregnancies last a while.

    • @MegaKaitouKID1412
      @MegaKaitouKID1412 7 років тому +9

      Literally no other airline has a problem with flight attendants doing the 100% normal human thing of having children, so that's no excuse. Also, women have kids and keep their jobs every single day, so no, they wouldn't've quit because of a pregnancy. In fact, supporting another human beings mean they need to retain their job more than before once they become pregnant.
      It's called maternity leave-- just like a random injury might necessitate leave from a job to heal, carrying around another human and then pushing it out of your vagina, something that women have to do at an average rate of 2 times in their lifetime to sustain the human population (let's be fair-- we could do to reduce that average for a while on a worldwide level, but in rich countries the birthrate often does not reach the level of sustaining the country's population so...) should get you some leave from your job.

    • @Fulidu
      @Fulidu 6 років тому +11

      It certainly does make sense to tell the airline you're pregnant so that you can switch to the ground crew etc. In Germany, it's against the law to fire women who are pregnant, on maternity protection (it starts 6 weeks before the estimated d.o.b and ends 8 weeks after birth) or on parental leave. Parental leave can last up to 3 years. I'm glad to live in Germany :)

    I can definitely understand the pregnancy one. The Airline doesn't want to be held responsible if something were to happen to you or your baby during the flight. It's also a lot of standing, and heavy lifting, 2 things that you shouldn't be doing in excessive amounts while pregnant. Firing them was too much though.

    A lot of industries have requirements for their employees. Hospital caregivers can’t have a visible tattoo larger than 2” x 2”, Hair has to be natural in color, no bright makeup, no fake nails or chipped polish, no scented lotions or perfumes, no piercings other than a single ear piercing. As far as weight goes, you will pay A LOT more for health insurance if your BMI is greater than 24.

    • @nazarethp9248
      @nazarethp9248 5 років тому +1

      Well not at the hospital that I work at. I am a male midwife and I have a tattoo sleeve on my right arm my ears are pierced and I wear two diamond studs in each year, I also wear after shave lotion and this is absolutely ok with my managers and the women that I assist during labour and deliver also compliment me on how nice I smell. True the female staff are not permitted to wear fake nails nor nail polish and their nails must be short, however, they can have their hair any colour that they want and there are several midwives at work with multi coloured hair, and again they are permitted to wear perfume. As far as excessive weight goes we don't have specific weight restrictions and as we have the NHS here in the UK we don't discriminate as to who will get care.

  • @pfzinnc
    @pfzinnc 5 років тому +1

    Did you ever wonder why the airlines weigh your luggage before a flight? The same goes for an estimate of the passengers size and weight. It's called "Weight and Balance." The pilots must know how much weight they are carrying excluding the weight of the fuel so they can plan their flight plan properly. Also, when the flight attendants are moving throughout the plane they are affecting the actual actual attitude of the plane. When I was flying in the U..S. Navy the crew in the tube would run from the front of the plane to the back and then back to the front. This created a "porpoising" effect which would really upset the pilots because they had to adjust the trim of the aircraft each time we did that.

Some of us (young blokes, too) have had multiple concussions from sports, etc., and the background noise makes it very hard to hear - and thus APPRECIATE - all of the work you've done. Thanks!, from those of us with bashed-up heads, or illness/ age-related hearing issues. Cheers!

      ashton vickers the heels most stewardesses wear are really small though. I’m a stewardess trainee and we wear the smallest 3cm heels there are. Even dudes could walk in those lmao

    I totally agree to the weight thing. The reason is that you need to be able to fit through the aisle. If you are overweight you can’t pass through the aisle then you are not fit enough to be a flight attendant 👩‍✈️👨‍✈️. Unfortunately those are the rules to be a flight attendant

    I always thought it was funny when on a flight from Seattle to Honolulu the flight attendant would always tell us the seat cushions serve as floatation devices in the unlikely event of a water landing. We're going from Seattle to Honolulu, if the plane goes down we're going in water.

    Weight restrictions are because if the weight of flight attendant is more the aeroplane also weight more which eventually burn more jet fuel

    I knew a lot of this stuff before I even tapped on the notification for this video bc my mom used to be a flight attendant! also really? a fucking WEIGHT requirement?! that's nuts if I owned an airline my flight attendants would need to have a weight thats healthy for their height and/or age if they were a little big boned or naturally (how do I put this without offending people...?) ch-chubby I wouldnt flip out and fire them or force them to go on a freakishly strict diet and extreme exercise rountine! that could cause some major problems (like with health and body functioning)

    • @friendlyneighborhoodgoth
      @friendlyneighborhoodgoth 7 років тому +7

      Also bmi is really tricky. Some people have more muscle weight which may make it seem like there overweight, but there not. I know people who are technically considered overweight, except all these people are athletes and all there weight comes from muscle

    • @Astro2024
      @Astro2024 7 років тому

      Oh please any normal, balanced diet and exercise routine is extreme to fat fucks who like stuffing their face all day. You would know

    • @bencered
      @bencered 7 років тому +10

      The reason for the weight requirement is for easy maneuverability. Most airplane "corridors" are quite thin, and hard to move through for overweight or "big-boned" people. If somebody is in urgent need of something, then you would have to be able to maneuver through these "corridors" quickly.

    I agree with all of these requirements. Flight attendants can and should aspire to the highest possible standards of grooming. On the other hand, the requirements Qatar Airways imposed on its female attendants were unfair and I am happy they have been relaxed. Women should not be discriminated against for becoming pregnant in any sphere of activity, aviation included.

    When they said the jewelry it reminded me of doctors. Doctors also can't wear massive about of make-up and jewelry. Maybe doing a video on weird doctor requirements is a good idea.

    • @Astro2024

    • @bencered

      Because if any make up/jewelry somehow gets into a patient, it can be VERY dangerous.

      Almighty_Flare TBH a lot of jobs have strict uniforms. For doctors it's so it can't hurt the patient but for other jobs it just makes stuff look more professional

      Doctor's should be wearing jewelry because they metal can cause serious infections. Especially if the jewelry is old. Plus, some patients are allergic to silver, you know.

    the height and weight requirements are logical. working in confined spaces. as someone who flies a lot i'd like to see passengers weight taken into consideration. nothing worse than a person so large that they take up half my seat. this may sound nasty, but try spending a long haul flight like that. also if they are so strict about carry on/checked luggage weight limits to control plane weight or fuel requirements etc they should factor in passenger weight too.

    The name of this video is misleading...why to call STRANGE requirements ALL people working with DIRECT contact with others have to fulfill?...Fields like education, health, business or security have to demand almost the same requirements for the same reasons: SERVICE. It is about the others, not about YOU.

    I'm not a flight attendant but working at the airport. We have rules for shoes, makeup, jewellery and haircolour as well. Many jobs have... Some out of safety reasons (no big dangling earrings). But some are also to look 'professional' since a lot of passengers are business people. I don't really mind not wearing a bright purple lipstick or green nailpolish at work (though we are allowed to wear blue nails, matching the blue uniform) A friend who once worked for a bank wasn't allowed to wear any nailpolish at all....
