I was at this race. I had just started racing for the first time that year at 16 years old and I could not believe how fast they went. Also, my dad and I found the factory guys were staying at a Holiday Inn. I saw all the box vans and met RJ, along with a bunch of factory mechanics who gave me free stuff like fenders. So cool back then.
In the latter stages of Hannah's career he was only motivated by certain tracks that he liked, millville being one of them. But when the Hurricane was motivated, he just attacked the track and we saw glimpses of 1979 when he was so unbelievably dominant
This is just BADASS! I was 4 years old, wasn't the first race I'd been to but definitely my first National. I think i remember leaving the Twin Cities with my Dad and uncle and the boring hour and a half drive but when we walked over the spring creek bridge I have vivid memories of how crazy big and wild everything looked. My family raced district 23 so they got me in the pits, still have some autographed stuff from that weekend. So Cool thank you for sharing this!!
I love watching Bob Hannah ride. He's fast as hell and looks like he's totally out of control 85% of the time. He's text book coming out of the corners.
Hannah was just magic when he was in form to win and on a track he felt was right for him. It still feels weird for me to see Hannah on a Honda, like some kind of alternate universe. Not a lot of video out there showing these guys ride, especially Hannah. Pure gold. Another one for the archives of Motorsport! Watching LeChien ride that works Honda 125…..just😍😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏🙏 And the big 500’s! With JoJo Keller pulling the holiest of holeeeee’s!!! I wish I could freeze this moment in moto just a little longer. David Bailey, a man whose style hasn’t been matched until now with Sexton and Jett Lawrence. It’s beautiful to watch.
@Andrew Simondet So VERY true! Just some wild dudes that love to ride and race MX. Don't care about the hype, looking fancy ect ect. Just twist the grip and rip! And so much more even matched talent made it that much funner to watch. It was anyone's race! And 2 strokes obviously the icing on the cake
Look at how smooth Hannah's works suspension is flowing. Then, look at Johnson's Yamaha bounce around like a pogo stick. It's jackhammering and bouncing all around the track. No wonder Johnson was so happy to sign with Honda. Is that JoJo Keller # 55? I used to watch him destroy the competition in the NESC. I've never seen a fat guy go that fast on a 125.I couldn't help but notice how straight and smooth the Suzuki's were traveling. That Full Floater system looks incredibly good. It's a shame they discontinued it.
It's all, everyone was there that day, your friend that had you're back during practice sessions at the local sump, construction site or resivoirs.Or riding/racing to get our pro license... great video
Thanks Heather keep up the great work it's like I'm 13 all over again rooting for team Yamaha or I was so bummed when Rick Johnson left Yamaha for Honda I understand though that was my brand ..
Thanks for posting the video this is awesome no surprise RJ holeshot the 1985 YZ 250 had to be the fastest 250 ever,I thought my 85 CR 250 wasfast till I rode the YZ that bike was a rocket ,,soo much faster than any 250 I ever rode and I had 83s 85s 87s 89s 97s no contest the 85 YZ smoked them all
It sure did... I owned one and holeshotted 12 out of 14 motos that Summer. Had the Pro Circuit pipe, Answer silencer and Boyesen reeds, and ran Trick racing gas for about extra 4hp. Added the Ohlins rear shock and the Simons fork kit up front to handle what was a very squirrely bike in the whoops on stock suspension.
my friend had a new 85 yz 250 ,he did put a pro circuit pipe on ,had the anti cav. fork mod-simons of course and the ohlins shock -basically it was a brilliant combination the bike HAD SO MUCH HP NOTHING COULD TOUCH ITand Carlson BOGAN PORTEDTOP END ,also he ran 93 pump gas most of the time..he hole shot every race he was in -BY FAR I have video to prove it...and he let me race his bike I even holeshot and that bike was so fast I was stunned he sold the jewel for 800$ it was the fastest 250 looking back I don't even know why I didn't buy it- I was a Honda rider but that white lightning YZ was unbelievable
I loved the track back in these days. Today it is to constrained and not as accessible. The nationals back then were pure, now the track is hard to even get a view of because of all the banners and sales points.
The pro tracks are so well groomed today than they were back then..This track is lined with tires..The riders had to tougher than today..These guys are amazing riders..
The factory works suspensions were great back then, comparing the one off factory works front forks and rear shocks to the production stuff was like night and day !
@@johnnybonacci7114 I saw an interview with Ricky a few days ago an he said storeback was a great rider jus couldn't seam to put it all together but he said he had no ill feelings that if he was storybook he'd been watching an trying to learn lines from the best an it was jus a acedent
Danny was one of my favorite riders. He got a bad rap on breaking RJs wrist. He felt bad about that.It was a total accident. AINT IT FUN BEING FROM TEXAS!
if you could get a new 1985 YZ 250 I know you would be able to smoke the 450s stock that YZ was incredibleno power valve no fuel injection but it had RAW speed listen to RJs bike
up lift Highly unlikely , hard to beat all the torque the 4 strokes produce. That said I'll watch a good 2 stroke race over the thumpers any day ! Especially the 125s .
Malarky. KTM has been making 2 strokes the whole time and nobody want's to race it against the 450s. Four strokes make power from idle to 12K. Nobody wants to ride a peaky bike against them.
Wow there are no jumps, and it's rough so much better than today's tracks. Every straightaway you have to huck a 80 footer now. DC you are a total sellout

Oh yeah..and those factory Honda's were amazing. Even though I was a Kawi guy...those Honda's made you drool.
Truly awesome id bet as a 16 yO kid ‘

You can tell how fit these guys are here- especially Hannah, RJ, and O Show. These guys were the gold standard for mx badasses back then.
That was awesome. What a gnarly track, and Hannah was on fire!
Seams it would be good to give credit to the one that shot and edited the video. Yep thats from my channel.
I agree thanks for shooting all this history and all you do for us an the sport
These videos are fantastic. This is the era that I was racing. Thank you so much for sharing these great memories.

the Glory days when 2 stroke machines graced the countryside. The wonderful sound
that was later replaced with sounds of farting cows!

Love it! Some of the greatest ever in that race. Reminds me of what Hannah could do when he was healthy and motivated. Incredible.
Hurricane wind was definitely blowing this day got to love those hrc works machines hand built masterpieces
Watching Hannah, Lechein and Bailey is so much more exciting than watching today's boring 450 and 250F at Millville.
@Andrew Simondet So VERY true! Just some wild dudes that love to ride and race MX. Don't care about the hype, looking fancy ect ect. Just twist the grip and rip! Love the way these videos bring out the grumpy old men.
This is gold. Thanks you. Totally in for the sub. I'm an 80's kid, so yes, i need this.

My first ever race was here in '91, I was rather over my head but wow what excitement..
Thank you so much for uploading this! This is so cool!
The best year for mx because it was the last year for real works bikes in the US
Lecheins 85 HRC 125 / Best Bike of all time
how can you not love bob hana.
Thank you for Sharing
I really like how you interspersed the audio of the announcer in the video. Sounds like Larry Myers. He sounds great!
Okay, definitely Larry Myers. Just watched the end of the video.
You're right I thought it was Huffman .

You apparently never rode a Honda or you wouldn't be braging about that junk yz

Not sure what Nationals you have been to lately but the ones I've been to (Pala and Red Bud) were rough as Hell.
Nobody ever said Bob Hurricane Hannah like Larry Maiers 💯
Can you imagine how fast these guys would have been with today's suspension technology
I BET IT WAS BETTER THAN WE THINK IT IS THATS REAL FULL ON WORKS SHIT THERE
That's why they put so many more obstacles on tracks today. The AMA admitted it, the speeds were getting to high.
The factory works suspensions were great back then, comparing the one off factory works front forks and rear shocks to the production stuff was like night and day !
Johnson racing around with Storbeck?
Storebeck was no joke! He was real fast on 80s and 125s.
Storbeck was bad ass too.
@@johnnybonacci7114 I saw an interview with Ricky a few days ago an he said storeback was a great rider jus couldn't seam to put it all together but he said he had no ill feelings that if he was storybook he'd been watching an trying to learn lines from the best an it was jus a acedent

the Johnny O Show flat out flyin on that werx Honda. Nice wide open track WFO!
RIP Jim West
Back in the days of no full face helmets and you wore leathers!! Lol
You can learn much watching the little professor here.
more than twice the riders that line up today
Is that Trevor Piranha at the end
if you think these guys were faster than Carmichael ,just watch the whoops these guys let off RC blazes thru
if you could get a new 1985 YZ 250 I know you would be able to smoke the 450s stock that YZ was incredibleno power valve no fuel injection but it had RAW speed listen to RJs bike

Boys, that most certainly pissed off the Euro-pee-on's
Badass Bob and foes showed.
Next?

Yeah, I echo that statement. This is so cool, thank you for uploading 👍🏻
