    I was at this race, the 2nd 250 moto was one of the best races in history. The following week I went to the Daytona Supercross and watched Ricky Johnson crash right in front of me and broke his wrist to end his career. I have this race on a homemade video.

    That’s right, national tracks haven’t always been ripped 3 feet deep, they all had different track conditions based on actual soil conditions.

      I was going to say that's the smoothest motocross track I've ever seen. It's like a road race course with some jumps and rutted turns. Although it takes a little less skill and fitness than a modern track I like how it's different and not the same as every other motocross track.

    • @1Sparrow1

      @@4touchdowns1game29 Actually this was not the norm back then. Most tracks in the 80's were far more technical than the tracks of today. Today's Supercross tracks aren't as technical as back then either. Go watch Rick Johnson vs David Bailey (I think it was Anaheim Supercross in 86 but I could be wrong). Anyway, it's known as one of the greatest if not the greatest Supercross race of all time. That track was crazy technical unlike anything you see today.

    • @4touchdowns1game29
      @4touchdowns1game29 Рік тому

      @@1Sparrow1 are you joking lol. In the eighties there were no dragons backs, step on step off into a quad, there was no wheel tap triple, whoops were just mounds of dirt instead of four foot tall razor spines of dirt. Show me the video of any of that from the eighties. Even the race you mentioned is just random one line stuff you'd see on the kiddie track.

    • @1Sparrow1
      @1Sparrow1 Рік тому +1

      @@4touchdowns1game29 Today's tracks have bigger jumps but they have more rhythm and are groomed almost perfectly. I'm not saying the whoops or jumps were bigger back then. Today's Supercross is just big jumps on perfectly groomed tracks were riders are getting hurt left and right. That does not make for better racing st all.

    At the end it was a privilege to watch two riders who were so incredibly well conditioned with wills of iron go at it all the way to the checkers. Such a shame that RJ's wrist just wouldn't heal and forced him into early retirement. He had a lot of winning still left in him.

    Thank you for this video. Larry Huffman was past his prime as far as calling race action. This was such a wonderful day for Rick Johnson. I was so happy and proud to see the G.O.A.T. get back into winning form only to have him go through such a horrific accident the following weekend at the Daytona Supercross. I am a Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart fan but Rick Johnson will always be the true G.O.A.T!

      larry huffman was much.more exciting back in the early mid 80s supercross races. Ricky Johnson, the "bad boy" is definitely a legend but nowhere near GOAT status. there is mcgrath and carmichael, bob Hannah, and maybe a few others. villopoto and Dungey dont count.

    • @hjmoto
      @hjmoto 6 років тому +1

      Ricky J was a true pro! It's hard to compare him to others that did not race against him during his prime. I agree that McGrath is the king of supercross and Carmichael is the G.O.A.T because of the number wins he has. James Stewart did break Carmichael's 125 record outdoors. However, if Johnson was racing with these guys when he was in his prime, how would it have been different? We will never know. Johnson was well on his way of becoming the greatest that ever lived until he got hurt! There are many young guys that don't know him because they never got to experience to see the speed, determination and the incredible skill that RJ had. I was able to meet and speak with RJ twice in 86' and 88' and he is a really good guy! I truly believe that no one had it like he did! Carmichael was really a stubborn mule who didn't like to lose races and it showed in his determination to win but he was not like RJ! I don't think anyone was as charismatic and out going like Johnson. Just as it was with Bailey, his time was cut short due to injury. Like any sport on this earth, no one can stay number one forever! Everyone's time comes and goes either it's due to injury or age.

      Damon was a freaking beast.. He raced on the same tracks we did here in NC.. I seen him do things that were incredible .. When he came through they literally told people to move back from the fence.. He would lay the bike down in the air rear tire over the fence and land IN the berm literally and not sit down at all.. It was an 80 foot jump and n one was coming any where close to him.. This was not a big jump.. He was just making it into one.. It was sick seeing him lap after lap doing this.. Larry Ward, Mike Brown and Jef Stanton ALL raced on these tracks with Damon.. The only one even close to Damon was Rusty Coleman.. Even Hank Moorey was out running local young kid was out running Stanton and Larry Ward.. Damon was totally in a close of his own..
      I also went to Lake Sugartree the day after the Pro's ran.. Damon was throwing down times more than 2 seconds a lap quicker than Jeff Ward and Stanton were the day before.. Damon got burnt out to be honest.. It happens to kids that raced and grew up like he did.. Ironically Rusty Coleman did the exact same thing.. Pushed down his throat too much at an early age.. But man I loved to watch both of them run.. They were both freaking incredible.... Thanks for the video as well.. Oh, and Damon outrun Rick Johnson at the Osaka Supercross.. He was 16 years old.. : 0)

      What a shame the unaccountable government drug police destroyed the end of James Stewart's career with a 16 month suspension fro not filling out paperwork for a prescription drug, (first offense), screwing James, his family, the factory, the sponsors and anybody else with an investment in the talent of James Stewart. These are "Life Long Efforts" these racers put into their trade, and we let these "dictatorship jerks" destroy the racers lives like no drug has ever done in this sport in all it's history. We have some of the same "hero's", but mine stretches back a few more years because I am probably older, starting with Hannah, Ward, Johnson, Bailey and O'Mara. I am sure I missed a few, but the king will always be the man we call RC.

    RJ had a bad wrist after 88, but by now, he realized, "I should have not let Jeff ride and live with me.". Today's racers think it is an asset to practice with their competition. I guess it works great, if you're the up and coming 2nd guy. :) Jeff Stanton was "The Ice Man", (coined by David Bailey), because when he had to win a race, (like a couple of come from behind wins at the MXofN), he made it happen. Feelings did not matter, results did.

    These tracks almost look like warn out, blue grooved hard pack track you see on someone's UA-cam channel from their backyard. Now they are perfectly groomed with exactly 47% moisture content, 65% dirt, 25% sand and 10% clay. LOL Am surprised how hard pack that track is for FL though? Those riders got punished for 35 min a moto. Love the 80's little flag banners for the track markers. Love hearing all these old names, RJ, Bayle, Kehoe, Mike Kid..
