  • Hi guys! Today I will show you how to vacuum seal using a FoodSaver and also using a hand break bleed kit (I used the Mityvac Automotive Test & Bleed Kit, model MV8000 from Harbor Freight). This gives you the knowledge of extending the shelf life of dry or dehydrated goods whether you have a food saver or are working on a budget! Thanks for watching!

    Takes me about one minute with a brake bleeder to vacuum seal 1/2 gallon canning jars full of pasta.
    I pump it to 20 inches Hg on the gauge.
    The food sealer's vacuum is usually in the range of 18 - 22 in Hg.
    So far it seems to be working out fine.

    The break bleeder is an awesome idea! I don't have the money for the FoodSaver right now in my budget but I wanted to start sealing some staples like beans and lentils in jars for a longer shelf life. Thanks for this video!

And after you said yours came with adapters, I went back and looked in the original package of mine, and sure enough! there was a little zipper bag with several pieces that I had never seen!! always great to have the hand held pump, what is your elect went out for a few weeks, and you opened a large can of you emerg. food storage (dehydrated) you could then divide it up in smaller jars and not waste whole can. Non electric gadgets are a must to have, and don't forget those hand held can openers.

    • @DVHomestead

      Exactly! And I love storing things in glass canning jars because they help keep bugs and rodents out, they keep the smell of the product in when sealed, and they are reusable! I've been learning about pressure canning recently and have found that people have basically been making their own MREs like beef stew and whatnot! I could also see how with vacuum sealing dehydrated or freeze dried products in a half pint or pint jar, that you could always add hot water (careful not to cause thermal shock to the jar, or it can break) to it for a quick meal as well!

    A Food Saver handheld , chargeable vacuum is close to $22 on Amazon....close in price to auto bleeder. The one you have to hand pump, pump, pump, pump would be fine if there was no electricity...otherwise, wow, it's going to take ages to vacuum several jars. More power to you, tho! 😊 Bless your heart....

    I finally figured out how to get my FoodSaver to Vacuum Seal! It wasn’t working no matter what I did! Then I sat there and asked the Lord to show me what I hadn’t tried. He pointed out that I hadn’t tried holding the hose attachment to the machine. That did the trick! Every single jar has been sealing!! There must be a gap inside not holding the hose to the vacuum sealer properly. Try it people!

    Could you please provide the actual diameters of the suction caps? Thing is, the terms "small, medium, regular, large, extra large" etc mean different things in different countries and I already have enough stuff from Amazon / ebay etc that's the wrong size.
    BTW (and I guess you don't need telling) but those brake bleeders are hell to use for arthritis sufferers. But there are all sorts of battery operated hand-held vacuum pumps becoming available on-line at very reasonable prices. And they work fine and dandy...

      It is a Ball jar band tool. My hubby looked them up recently because the only ones I could find were on Amazon for fifty bucks (I originally bought mine for less than ten dollars at Wal-Mart, but I was trying to find the information for someone else interested in it). Anyways, my husband found that Ball makes two separate tools now- that does what my one tool can do- which tightens/loosens bands and lid lifter.

    So you don’t need an air absorber with vacuum sealing? That’s one way to save $$$ .

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  2 роки тому

      If you want to store long term, and want to be sure it'll last, then you can add an O2 absorber. Personally, I haven't had a seal failure in all the years I've done this method without using oxygen absorbers. I think if I were to have a seal failure after vacuum sealing, then it would be due to gases from spoiled foods rather than not having gotten enough air out.

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  5 років тому +3

      Thank you! I'm not sure how long they last for sure, I know mine have lasted at least s year before being used up. I did see one lady open a jar of chocolate chips that had been sealed for 3 years and they were still good. A lot has to do with how it is stored (temperature/light exposure/etc) and that determines how quickly things may spoil. Also, remember that nuts contain their own oil and will tend to spoil more quickly than chocolate chips for example. I hope this is helpful for you!

    • @DVHomestead

      Unless your home gets invaded by pantry moths. They'll lay eggs on and around containers, and the larva hatch and eat their way in through plastic and cardboard. Yuck. Hence the reason I store mine in jars, to protect against insects and rodents. Also prevents things from moisture from humidity, and going stale as quickly as they otherwise would in original packaging.

      Odd observation: Those gnarly pantry moth larvae were attracted to the residue on the neck of my vegetable oil bottle. They appear to have gotten coated & suffocated.
      Maybe that discovery can be applied to their demise somehow.

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  4 роки тому

      Hmmm... If your lids aren't bent and the rubber seal looks fine, then it may be how you are pulling the attachment off the jar. If I remember correctly, when I first started sealing jars (even though I got the correct pressure for sealing), I'd accidentally pop the seal because I tilted the attachment too much while removing it. Also, be sure to clean your rim to make sure there are no food particles that would cause the seal to fail. I hope this is helpful for you!

    I wanted to make salad in the jar. I purchased a cheaper Food Saver model, and both the regular and large month attachments. None of the jars sealed. There was no vacuum coming from the accessory port. I than purchased the hand held device from Food Saver, and I made up 5 quart jars of salads. All 5 jars lids sealed, and I twisted the cover on. Within a few days, all of the salads in the jars started was turning into silage. Only one lid unsealed, and the other four lids were still sealed. I head to throw out all of the salads. A lot of money was wasted. Not sure what went wrong. I returned the Food Saver model, because of no vacuum from the accessory port. I may try the bleed kit tool.

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  4 роки тому

      I've never done salad this way before, so I'm not sure what went wrong. The only thing I can think that might have caused the seal to fail might be that the food was realising gases and causing pressure to build up inside the jars. I vacuum seal dry goods, and have both water bath canned and pressure canned other foods, but luckily none have unsealed (knock on wood) after having sealed. I hope you are able to successfully extend the freshness of your salads, it'd definitely help reduce the number of trips to the store, and even save money if you get the ingredients on sale.

    This is the only safe way to store dry goods. I tried oven canning but I couldn't get all the moisture out of the beans. My first attempt was 1 hour at 250* they developer moisture inside the jar so I put them back in for 2 hours at 225*, they come out of the oven dry and seal good but as they cool they condensate inside the jar again. I didn't experience this with rice because it didn't have the moisture in it. I'll never oven can again so don't believe that BS in the videos.

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I agree after doing research on oven canning. Apparently it can cause micro fractures in the glass of the jars, making it more likely they'll break especially if trying to water bath or pressure can with them later on. I love vacuum sealing them. It's very quick and easy.

    • @DVHomestead
      @DVHomestead  4 роки тому +3

      You'd probably be surprised to know that many people who live off-grid really try to reduce what they use for electricity, due to having limited power from solar or generators, and therefore they look for ways to save on electricity by using non-electric methods for things most people would take for granted.
