I laughed like crazy when you told me to put this 10lb bag in the freezer. I have a bit of a hoarding disorder when it comes to food and my freezer is ALWAY full to the brim with reduced price meat.
If you add a bay leaf to the bags, it kills any weevils that might grow and any eggs. Thanks goes to my grandma for this tip and thanks for your great video. GB
To the best of my knowledge, bay leaves don’t kill anything. They only repel.
@@HomesteadHopefulTara A little food grade diatomous (sp?) earth. No bugs, no eggs, and it is edible. The vid I watched said a little diatomous earth prevents parasites in the gut.
Good Point about the Bay Leafs .. My aunt alwys did that and also used to Bay Leafs to deter roaches in her home, never saw one
Great tip. I had no idea.
@@1946pepper mine used them to deter tigers from coming into our home. Never saw one. 😅
Prophetic words here ."We got hard times ahead "
It's coming and I've been saying it for yrs. All the signs have been there and only since this "C0v1d" are ppl now starting to see.

I live in a high humidity area and I would recommend inverting the freezing process. That is, divide up the big bag, vacuum seal it, then freeze it; instead of freezing it first. The sealed bag will prevent any moisture from condensing on the flour itself as it warms back up, but you may have a wet plastic bag. Better than wet flour though.
I've read that it keeps indefinitely vacuumed and in the freezer
Finally someone who shows how to do it simply!! Thank you!!
Simple is my favorite! 😉
Amen.
@@eileenlester4342 i agree...
I used her method, easy!! Love it!!
Do you have simple ways you do you rice, beans and pastas? Do I need to take them out of their original packaging, if I buy some small ones along with a bulk one.? I’m sorry I’m asking this so late after you made this video. I just got started a few months ago.
2 yrs later and I haven't found a better way to do this. Right now I have about 40 lbs of flour in a freezer...taking up valuable space. Now I know what I should do with the bags. You're a God send!!!
Same here....
Good idea - I bake 2 loaves of bread at a time, so would measure out 6 cups in each bag - no measuring on baking day.
would you kindly share your bread recipe, please & thank-you?🙂
I’d do 7 cups, for kneeling and extras lol.. but I agree.. measure out your favourite bread recipe and store like that for smaller batches
Good idea. I've been vacuum sealing smaller bags whole, but I wasn't sure how I needed to break down my larger bags, sugar too!
Great idea
This is brilliant! I love baking.
Another usable bag to use inside the sealed bag is the wax paper bags from cereal boxes. It is somewhat see through than the brown bags and also can be washed.
good idea!
@Almost Average hehe I still play the original D@ from time to time. There is some good stuff on this channel that's for sure.
Those aren't good for long term... keep them tho, it's good cheap wax paper
@@billcat1840 does the wax break down?
@@sherrieash9852 acts like regular wax paper..just thicker
Thank you. I put a packet of salt and yeast (separately but inside) with the premeasured flour so that I can make bread easily when I need it. Only need to add water
Thank you for this video. You pointed out one important step that most video makers are not - FREEZING THE FLOUR for 3 days. That is so important. I do that, too. You gave me a good idea of using the brown bags so I can buy the bigger packages at Sams and Costco. I've just been buying the 5 pound bags and leaaving it in the packaging then vacuum sealing that. Buying in bulk will be so much more economical.
We can only get 3-4 lb bags here! No massive 20lb bags, no bulk buying supermarkets either 🙁
Instead of writing the date I packaged, I write the original exp date from the package. I feel like its more accurate for rotation. Thank you ! Really helpful video.
I actually put the little brown bag in backwards so the opening is away from the sealer. Works.
That’s what I do too. I also do powdered milk and instant mashed potato’s that way. Works like a charm….
Stop one: Buy vacuum food sealer. Step two: buy more flour. Step three: follow the steps on this video. Thank you!
Freeze it for 3 days in the freezer before you do that. It will kill any weevil or bugs in flour.
I see them at second hand stores all the time....
4:36 is real talk. You’re only being wasteful if you waste things. Seems simple, but most folks lost track of why simple things are often better things.
I put mine in a gallon jar and put coffee filter on top then vacuum seal them. i like the bag ideal.
Eye on...add bay leaf, as bugs are inherent on the plant. I had a friend that when she went to get her non treated flour( and flour like products), it was an empty bag of debris.
Freeze your flour bay leaf doesn’t work let it come to room temperature a few days
Thank you for both the genius-ness and simplicity of this paperbag method. Definitely a facepalm moment for me :D
This is my second sous vide cooker ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK2YRU9uBOXzuIEV660Qo3sX7dJDJLg72 and I don’t know why you would cook meat any other way. This model is more compact and quieter than our older version that this one is replacing. We have done creme brûlée, cookie dough and tons of meat. They all come out perfect every time. I recommend this to EVERYONE. The app is great and easy to use. It stays at a consistent temperature. This model is extremely quiet. I just love it. We also have the anovo sous vide cooker 16L box thing and this fits inside that which is great because I can store them together. I just love that I can set this and walk away to deal with the rest of dinner.
I buy the rolls of vacuum seal and make my own bags.
This is brilliant!! Thank you for sharing. This would also work by measuring out the amounts needed for different recipes (especially bread) and you wouldn't need to open an entire bag. Now I can save my canning jars for canning!
I use plastic freezer bags with my vaccum sealer. It is so much cheaper. Those bags are expensive! Many videos on the internet on how to use freezer bags with the vac sealer. Saves a LOT of money.
Ooh I bet this method would work well for dry pastas too, especially the kind that tend to poke through the food saver bags. (I’m looking at you pointy ended penne!!)
I recommend that you cut off the the vacuum seal bags (if they're ziplock) keep the top sealed/zipped. That way, when it comes time to use the stuff in the bag, you can just use the ziplock opening - and potentially just cut open the bottom again, reseal, and keep using the same bag. That makes vacuum sealing bags a sustainable storage method.
We did the lunch bag vac seal's, each paper bag is pre-measured with enough flour to make 2 loaves of bread for long term storage, we also have a bucket with a gamma lid for daily use
I love your flour idea!
Wow! Thank you so much for this video. I just bought a better vacuum sealer to do this. I'm in Germany and it is getting nearly impossible to get flour. I went to 3 stores today and was only able to get 1 kg of pizza flour. I want to preserve every bit of my stock pile correctly. Again thank you! Please take care and keep prepping! Liebe Gruß aus Der Eifel Jacqueline 😊
Thank you so much for the tip. This is easy and convenient and simply great. Thanks again
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with everyone, this is great.
What a useful demonstration. Thank you Jin.
This video made me a subscriber! I’ve not wanted to use expensive jars to store flour! I’m so excited now!
Yay! It’s way cheaper and takes up much less space! 😉
I just bought a food saver! This is great! Thank you!
Love that idea!
This was very helpful!!! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video, thank you for showing us how to vacuum seal flour! ❤️😊
I am SO grateful for this video!! I have only been prepping for a month and I have been feeling rather panicky because things are happening so quickly now in the world, and I have been overwhelmed by the videos on different methods for storing powdery items, especially flour and powdered milk. This is definitely the best, thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!!!
Im prepping too.. now i need a goto spot a bit higher up than i am now.

Omg...thanks for the tip about tucking the bag into the little tray inside. I was getting so frustrated. It doesn't tell you that in the instructions! I almost went and bought another one...thank you so much!!!
Thank you for the thaw tip, I always wondered about condensation.
This is just what I was looking for! Thank you!
Wow, thanks for the enfo. I’ll be doing this .
So I was just wondering why everyone goes to great lengths to store flour. This is so simple and appreciate the paper bag tip!
Thanks for the excellent tips!
Blessing upon you for sharing this FANTASTIC information.
So great to find you! I'm in upstate NY and looking for a small homestead (have had gardens all my life, but would like to expand with chickens) Happy to find a homesteading channel with the same seasons I deal with! Yay!
I’m so glad I watched your video before storing my flour! I would have tried vacuuming without the paper bag. What a mess diverted! 👍🏼
I had been wondering how to store my flour, now I know! Thanks a bunch!
I especially like the totes idea! Thanks!
Love all your video's.You are very good at getting to the point of things. That makes you a really good teacher!Thank you for all of your work!!!God bless!!!

So glad it helped!
Thank you Jenni 😘
Thank You for making these video’s 🙏
Thank you! Great information and just in time. Bought a 25 lb bag, want to seal it, didn't know to freeze it first. Thank you. 🌻
I absolutely love this method. It helps with portion control and perfectly package if you need to barter.
Wow thanks so much for showing us this easy method.👍
Thank you for the tips especially the freezer
I’ve been doing this for years! Same with beans, lentils, rice! Works grate!
Just found your videos this morning and love them. Thank you for the effort you put into them.
Thank you Barb, happy to share! 💕
Thank you! I just found you. I’m going todo this.
Wonderful instructions. Simple, easy to follow and understand. TFS
The tube must know that tomorrow I’m vacuum sealing flour because you showed up lol
Man, I’m I ever happy to have found this method to store flour. I’ve been using jars, but this way is so much cheaper and I can use my jars for better things like chicken. 😊
Thank you!!! 🦋
Christy Machala yes! I used to use jars as well, and chicken is my favorite thing to can!
You sound like a wise prepper.
I think I'm going to take everything (rice, beans, oatmeal, etc) out of my jars and reseal like this since jars and lids are getting hard (and expensive) to find around here.
@@danniemcdonald4903 I recycle jars that come with food in them for dry beans and rice.. After washing and drying I fill them to the top and top-off with a small amt of DE.. I heat the oven to about 200 then put the filled jars in for about 1/2 h with the lids to the side.. When everything is hot I put the lids on finger-tight.. As they cool, they will seal.. Even without sealing the contents are protected as long as they are not opened and will last for years..
@Jackie Meintjes No, I put it in loose then shake it around.. DE is harmless to mammals.. It is used to kill insects in grain, worms in pets and livestock.. Humans use it the same way and as a colon cleanse, among other things.. I have used it myself in those ways.. It never expires.. Just be sure to get food grade not the kind for pool filters..
I loved this video. It was really easy to follow your directions. 😊👍🏼
Thanks for the advice on freezing flour.

I just bought a lot of flour and put it in the freezer. I was wondering the best way to preserve it and I found your video. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for this!
Very good tutorial- did not know this. Thanks
Thank you so much for your brilliant ideas!!! I used to make a lot of bread, but now I tried to cut down some carbs. So now I have a way to keep my flour fresh and longer!! Thanks!
Thanks for posting this! An easy and simple way to store flour. We just bought a food saver a month ago. We stored 36 pounds of flour this way!
awesome idea, best idea!! thank you!!
Wow, thanks for sharing the trade secret of vacuum sealing flour!!!
You might want to research the adhesive on the tape. Some tapes the adhesive can be unsafe or toxic. I put the label on the vacuum bag to keep the adhesive as far from the food as possible.
After I watched your video about stocking up before fall, I began making my order and placing it to pick up.. It got pretty pricey but I k now I need to go ahead and get those things while I can. This video on vacuum sealing the flour for long term is very handy. I will use this way for sure. Flour was one of the items I ordered. Thanks so much from your newest subscriber. Love your interesting and very useful videos but have only watched 2 since I found you...God Bless you.
Great advice for eggs hatching prevention!
Thank you for sharing this
I have been using mason jars to seal dry goods for years. Got a jar top attachment. Works great.
I use mylar potato chip bags to store flour, cornmeal, etc.. A bag of flour just fits an 8 oz chip bag.. They are easy to vacuum and seal.. Your method is great for smaller amounts..
Great idea 💡
Just what I needed to see! Thanks!
This is genius! We were looking for a way to store flour long-term that didn't use up a bunch of jars and this worked flawlessly! We were able to put up 50lbs of gluten free bread mix in under an hour. Thank you!!
I was wondering if you put it in the freezer, and a minute later you answered my question. Love the idea of using the lunch bags.
Thank you so much.
Thank you!!! Simple solution with things I already have.
Hello, I consider myself an advanced prepper and recently found your channel. I find it very useful information without a lot of fluff that others stuff into there offerings. I am a FF/Paramedic/ 37 yr Florida State Certified exterminator here. Excellent advice concerning freezing of flour in the freezer. This should kill any weevils in your flour, same goes for rice weevils or any stored pantry pest including spices as well. Great advice as well as to using a paper bag when sealing. The only recommendation I could possibly add is an oxygen absorber in the bag, probably over kill, but we are talking about food you and your family are relying on to survive. The Bay leaf idea somebody mentioned I would have never thought of but any grandma's recommendation carries solid weight in my book. Just my "10" cents (hyper inflation) anyway.
A food grade silica free diatomaceous earth can easily be added to any grain to easily kill any insect by the way. The trick is finding food grade diatoms free of silica. Diatoms work as a desiccant, cutting an insects cuticle thereby dehydrating the skeletal mass. Smooth edged diatoms such as pool filter diatoms will not work. There is NO pesticide ingestion action here so no worries for humans. There are inhalation issues when using non food grade or pool diatoms or any diatom that has silica in it. Silica cannot be expelled from your lungs so it should NOT be inhaled!
How do you store rice without causing botulism? Apparently things that have the least little bit of oil in it can cause this! ? Flour even has a tiny amount.
@@oohyllab, white rice.
Thank you so much for this. I have 80lbs of flour and I've been looking for a way to food saver it without ruining my food saver.
Thank you finally short sweet thorough
Thank you! I can now get all the flour I have in my freeze out of there.
Amazing! thank you so very much for this. We have been buying flour as we could, whatever kind it was when we found it. Just bought a vacuum sealer and am putting flour in the garage freezer right now. Will do as you say and leave it there for a few days before doing this with the sealer. This is such a useful piece of knowledge to have.....thank you for sharing it with us! Take care, be safe and remember to breathe!
Thank you so much. I did this yesterday and got a bucket full done and no hot kitchen oven canning. More to do!
Great job!
Thank you so much!
I just saw your video. What a great idea. Thank you.
I vacuum seal flour in mason jars. Put a cupcake paper in the top so it doesn’t go into the vacuum. Use the food saver sealers for wide mouth and regular jar and the food saver cordless vacuum sealer. It saves wear and tear on my big food sealer . Also I freeze the flour too and sometimes I put the bay leaves in also
After freezing I disinfect an ice chest and put the flour in for a few days to allow the moisture to dissipate.
So clever
Thanks
Good idea! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for your informative video! I was doing it this way except I folded the brown paper bag over and then later the flour got soft again. So, I will give this a try and hopefully it will hold its air-tight vacuum seal. Thanks again and have a great day. I subscribed!
katie vallette welcome to our UA-cam family! 💕 so glad this helped!
The only "Store Bought" flour I ever use is the "unbleached" OR genuine "Whole Wheat"!
But, living in a productive farming region, it's always easy during harvest time to buy the freshly harvested Wheat berries right from the farmers that grew it!!!
Thank you very much, I have never seen or heard it being done this way before. You have just saved me a lot of money. Stay safe.
New subscriber here! I was just wondering this am how I was going so this! Thank you so much for the clear and concise instructions. Much easier than I thought!
I tried this out this morning. Works like a charm. I actually had a new 5# bag of bread flour I hadn't opened yet, froze it over night, took it out...nice and dry later this afternoon. Put it into a gallon freezer (sealameal) bag and vac'd it after I'd opened and taped it. Worked like a charm. Thank you so much!!
Fantastic!
