  • I hope this answers some of your questions on how I do long-term food storage; how I buy sale items in bulk and save them to use over years of time. Up to 15 or plus years that these cookies can stay freash in these jars, depending on room temps, sunlight, dark cool spaces you should store them in. Enjoy the video! Janie

    I have cocoa puffs I experimented with when I first got my vacuum sealer. I sealed 2 jars of the cereal, and each month I open one to try them and then reseal them. It's been 2 years now and they are still crunchy and yummy. I know cocoa puffs are so bad for me, but they taste sooooooo yummmy!!

      We all have our vices! LOL Mine is red licorice! I vacuum seal that and it stays fresh for a very long time (okay...I can't testify to that as it only last a month at the most)! Buahah!!

      Hehee Yes skittles are my candy of choice, but if I keep them in my house I will eat them so quickly there's no need for sealing them in any way. If I ever find a great sale on them I may be in trouble then.

    I am learning how to do food storage prep and your video has been a great help to me! While I plan to have some Mountain House freeze dried, I wanted to learn how to store basics like rice, beans using oxygen absorbers and vacuum seal in Mason jars rather than mylar bags. You really have a knack for teaching with a delivery that is both interesting and delightful, and I gotta say that your southern accent is so charming :) Many thanks!

    ***** Yes, you can store coffee, tea bags, tea powder, koolaid powder, baking mixes as long as they do not have 'oils like shortening in them' and pastas, licorice, and even hershey kisses! Any dry good without oils in the mix can be vacuum sealed. I even vacuum seal my cereals because they are expensive and I only eat a bowl or two a month, I'm not a breakfast person anymore, but sometimes, I like a donut or something sweet or salty. Now, I do vacuum seal seeds like sunflower seeds, but I don't keep anything like donuts, or seeds with shortening or oils in them, like pecans, walnuts, etc...in my 'long-term' food storage, keep them sealed and in my 'to use up quickly' cabinet. Nuts can go rancid due to the oils, so just be sure and label them with the usual exp dates on jars that is on packages. Beans, rice, cornmeal mixes all can be vacuum sealed, but if it says shortening or oils...again, you can not dry can or vacuum seal them for long term storage in a pantry. These must be eaten by exp dates on boxes. I'll do a video and post it soon. You can even vacuum seal first aid kit in plastic bags to keep from getting wet in a backpack for camping; vacuum seal your camping meals, vacuum seal socks to keep dry and keep bath supplies sealed in bags to keep from getting nasty wet stuff on your favorite blouse when traveling. I have tons of ideas on this subject! LOL

    Three years late to your video, but it was a great help. Had problems of some lids sealing and others not. Will check to see if the broken sealed ones were Ball. Found in getting the sealer off, the lids would come too... Bought another sealer lid and it did the same thing...only to find out that the lids were not Ball. Live and learn. In comments...light oil film on sealer lids may just be the ticket. So many great ideas in this video. Thanks for the education!

      Big Lots is having their 20% off with online coupon sale today; coupon printed off and we were heading out and then we got a 'travel red alert' warning on my iphone, which means we're supposed to stay off roads; emergency crews only. *scream goes here*, I waited three months for this sale; guess what?? I'm going anyway! Big Lots is only 2 miles up the road from our country home; if I have to use the sled and my Siberian to get us there...we are going! Buahah!

      just read and subscribed today. I see it was 2 years ago but was wondering if you did get to Big Lots that day if it was closed because maybe everyone was sent home and they closed because of the obvious snow storm you had. Just purchased a vacuum sealer a week ago and find them fascinating. Got it from Amazon for around $40. Never dealt with Ebay but Kohl wanted quite a hefty sum so Amazon it was. Will check out your other videos to see the many ways I can use it. Thanks.

      Have fun with it; it is habit forming; one day you will look in your cabinets and not only will they be all labeled and organized, but you'll see sealed glass jars for miles! Buahah! I seal cereals, licorice, hershey kisses, crackers, popcorn, and even sesame seeds for my salads. Dried fruits like cranberries...Oh...yep, gotta do a video on this...lol..
      Anything goes in the dry goods or baked goods section of the kitchen...lol...if you want it to stay fresh longer, vacuum seal it. The only thing that did not work...DON'T LAUGH...marshmellows! It was a horrible thing to try out. They shrank and turned to glue. LOL>> Some things are just fine left alone! ROFL>>

    Thanx Janie for taking the time to pass along your tips. I also use the sealing kit to do fresh fruit which I then refrigerate. I have had very good luck with that. A tip for you. I see you struggling to get those sealer tops on and off. I went thru the same thing. Now I just add a little coating of vegetable oil to the rubber seal. Now they just pop on and off real easy. The oil will last thru several jars before needing a re-coat, and it doesn't leave a mess on the jars or tops. If you keep running them dry, you eventually will wear out those seals, rendering them useless. Try it and see what you think. I appreciate the tip about the dollar store. I will be checking them first thing! Keep up the good work and take care. Have a good thanks giving as well. J

    This is a great re-use for lids that you have previously used for pressure or water bath canning. They can be re-used for vacuum sealing, and work great. If I have a lid that doesn't seal the first time, I try again with another lid upside down on top of the first lid, then use the vacuum sealer. For pasta, I usually cook mine first, then dehydrate. Then I vacuum seal it in jars. The benefit is that not only do I have pasta for storage and kill any critters that might be present, but I only need hot water to re-hydrate.(Saves time and energy)

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  9 років тому +6

      yes it is a good way to re-use your canning lids. I don't re-use the sauce lids or the heavy smell of onion or garlic lids...but most I do reuse and they work over and over again! Thanks for blessing us with your input. Come back anytime and share with us. Blessings!

    @ShanDeGlam: What country are you in? If in USA, Walmart has the best ball jar pricing. If you buy used be careful, some ppl store bolts or junk...and even gasoline and oil for mixing. You are safer to buy new jars and have them for many years to come. Reusable so one you have the initial investment you are good to go the following years. They have all the tools and lids for canning as well.

      +Windswept Homestead, some ppl go off what they read online and are newer to the subject than they 'seem' to be. I've been preserving food for a long time; over 31 years and had very few not seal or go bad on me. I don't think those who are new to food preservation should be teaching from a short-term experience. They could be saying one year because food can lose color and sometimes flavor after one year, that doesn't mean it goes bad it just isn't at its perfect state; and when those who 'give' advice to public without that knowledge (learned from experience). Does that make sense? LOL!
      I learned how to fire a cannon today at a civil war re-enactment but that doesn't mean I'm going to race out and teach a class on how to fire off a cannon! Believe it or not, all it takes if a pint of botulism to kill the ENTIRE world. True!
      So, in that sense, it's just as dangerous to teach food storage wrongly as to teach cannon lighting wrongly!
      Okay, so that is the extreme, but, you get my point.
      It's always good to rotate food stores, only buy foods that you will eat to save space and store for your area; use glass if mice/rodents are an issue, mylar if they are not, and, in food buckets for the other goods as well. Store in multiple ways so that you don't lose your stores in any one given emergency. Earthquakes, glass can break, mylar won't. Camp a lot, mylar is great for back packing. So, take your location and situation and use that for your food storage needs. I hope this helps. Blessings!

      I get what you are saying. I kept thinking that the lady must be looking online and maybe had not tried out storage past 1 year.

    desiccant silica gel, are supposed to remove moisture (not oxygen)... I think what you probably meant was, those little packs? they're silica gels, and they help to absorb any balance moisture in the jar. the foodsaver takes out the air (and the oxygen) but it can't get rid of the moisture.

      You can use a bike pump to make your own food saver attachments work. But yes, you can reseal these lids and jars over and over again...reusing the lids from your canned foods for vacuum sealing. It recycles all those home canning jar lids. Resealed, I've had them last another year or two. But once open, we eat that jar up before opening another kind of sweet treat.

  • @sjs9354
    @sjs9354 8 років тому +2

    I'm confused about the cookie long term storage. I had understood that only dry foods free of oils, including nuts, can be used for long term storage as oils go rancid. I get that the air is removed by vacuum sealing and oxygen absorbers. I just found $5 cereal for $1.99. I vacuumed sealed it but didn't think it could be sealed for long term storage with the nuts, raisins
    and brown sugar clusters. Also the Oreo with cream centers are confusing. I haven't seen anyone else do this so far except with hard biscuit type cookies and crackers.

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  8 років тому +5

      +JAS Jubilee, It should be free of oils to be long term...there is short term (6-3 years), there is Medium term (3-9) years, and, there is long term (8 years and up) ...I'd put cookies like Oreos at the 3-4 year mark as that is as long as I've personally kept them. I just opened some and they were still good. I'm still standing! LOL! WHEW!
      But cookies are pre-baked, pre-made goods that are MIXED with flours and sugars and the oils don't 'leak'.
      So, the chemical is bound with other products, making them last even longer. Proportionately, most store-bought harder type cookies have less oils than a nut.
      They don't LEAK oils like a homemade cookie would. I've stored homemade cookies only short term, they had more veg oils in the ones I tried saving. Homemade cookies don't have preservatives either. This makes a difference too.
      They are not oil based products. Nuts, coconut and such, would be considered short term storage in their natural state, due to higher ratio of fat content.
      Anything can spoil.
      If doesn't look, smell or seem right, toss it!
      Always lean on the safe side.
      I've saved chex cereals for 2 years max. But they had the nuts in them.
      The Rice chex are still fine and it's been over 3 years. So, I know the nuts do tend to ruin products quicker.
      I've stored PB2 (powdered peanut butter) with luck, for 3 years so far.
      Muffin mixes with shortening, I've stored a max of 2 years. Again, there is more shortening in that mix for the ratio than some cookies. So, I read the ingredients and taste the product and look it up on their website the ingredients if necessary and find what ingredient stores the least amount of time and in what product I'm storing, as that can make a difference, and mark label with that date. This forces me to check the jar BEFORE that date is up and also, I ROTATE everything!

    Please note. Please do not put the wire rims back on them. Check them periodically to see that the seal in still down in the middle by looking at the tops with a light source or if in a semi-dark area - gently touching them with your finger. The reason you don't want to put the rim on is that they could open and then reseal if there is a temperature fluctuation. This could allow them to regain their seal without forming a full vacuum. . (i.e. power outages in hot or cold weather and a return to the opposite temperature - or back and forth changes in a storage that does not keep an even temp. year round.) If this happens, you have no way of knowing that they have been compromised. With the rim off the lid the lids, you can see that the lid is popped up in and middle and loose.

    I'm so happy that I found your channel! I just dry canned and a 50lb bag of rice and I'm doing beans tomorrow. Thank you so much for the information you have shared!💗💗 my question is: do you use the same method for storing granola and cereal as you do for beans and rice? Or can I just vacuum seal them in the jar as is?

    I read that oxygen absorbers should not be used in anything that has over 10% fat. Wouldnt the cookies exceed that (especially the cream filled ones)?

    How do I match the right vaccum machine to the right jar sealer attachment? So that the hose is the right one to fit into the port hole. I noticed the attachment is sold separately from the vaccum machines. 😊 That was a bit confusing looking for a match on the two items. Lol

    • @lmhoovable
      @lmhoovable 7 років тому +2

      I agree. and if you are keeping the cookies in their plastic sleeves, sterilization isn't too important. I've never gone thru that process to dry seal my jars. if they are clean, the food goes in, and sealed. never had an issue.

      Ooh I wish we could get these Mason Jars in the UK. Canning isn't big over here and although you can get sealable containers they're not that big and are torturously expensive.

    I am not all the way through the video, so maybe you have already answered. But, outside of the ability to reseal the jars, is there any advantage of jars over the vacuum seal bags? I recently found a vacuum sealer for just a couple of bucks at a thrift store and want to start using it, but I don't have the jar attachment. Also, I would think bags would be easier to store as you could pile them in small crates on shelves with a fraction of the weight of the glass jars.

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  9 років тому +3

      The glass jars are a better investment for several reasons:
      1. Glass unlike plastic can be sanitized (brought to 250* for 10 minutes under steam and pressure (like a hospital autoclave), and used over and over again.
      2. The glass jars can hold larger amounts.
      3. In a SHTF situation you'd always have a supply of filled or un-filled glass jars to rotate, but the mylar and plastic would eventually run out. Then you'd have nothing.
      4. Glass jars can be opened and resealed over and over.
      5. Jars can be used later for other purposes, like holding sugar, flour or even canning.
      6. Mice can not chew through the glass or metal lids. But they can chew through plastic and they will in time.
      7. Prolonged plastics touching your food is not a good idea as it causes hormonal changes in the body; see this link: www.npr.org/2011/03/02/134196209/study-most-plastics-leach-hormone-like-chemicals
      8. And if there is no trash service, where are you going to toss out the plastic bags and containers when they are no longer good to use, they do not bio-degrade?
      9. You can freeze and heat jars and kill the larva in the grains/rice, wheat, barley...etc...or else these critters will hatch and you'll have ruined grains. See my OVEN DRY CANNING VIDEO here: ua-cam.com/video/aiSxDNzMwSs/v-deo.html
      If you choose this route, at least use Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber; they don't let the light in to the food and they can be sealed on your vacuum sealer as well.
      Mice can chew through Mylar, but, if you store them in a food grade 5-gallon bucket (get them at walmart) this might help to keep the mice out, although, I have prepper friends who say they have lost a lot of money in dehydrated foods in plastic buckets from rats chewing them. Mice can chew through the plastic of 5-gallon buckets as well.
      Plastics never go away, they pollute environment; they never bio-degrade. Your ball lids can be used hundreds of times over when vacuum sealing (only use lids once when pressure or water bath canning, but these canning lids may be used for vacuum sealing once used in canning process once; I don't pitch my lids).
      I hope this helped. Have fun using your new vacuum sealer. If it has a hole for the air hose attachment, you can find a good deal on ebay for the Ball Vacuum Lid Sealers in both regular mouth and wide mouth tops (just like mine). Just make sure your food is very dry (less than 10% moisture when vacuum sealing).
      Blessings! Janie

      Yes you can and you can re-seal over and over again! It smells fresh everytime you open them...I even do teabags! Coffee beans last longer than coffee grated...but about 2-3 years best time and rotate stores so you don't have to have it on the shelf that long to begin with.

    Great tutorial but for what reason do you have to store cookies? ;D

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  6 років тому +4

      Two-fold: One, my husband buys girlscout cookies from neighbor girls and he's a diabetic and can't really eat them and I'm not a sugar eater....you'll notice I have very few desserts recipe vids on my channel. So, I store them when the kids come up (we have eight children and soon 11 grandchildren). They are like new and are as fresh as the day I packed them ...which was a few years ago...what other method could do that for you? I always have a sweet treat on hand if needed, especially if I have to get hubby's numbers up fast! Two, prices at store on my favorite Golden Oreos and even when they stop manufactoring your favorites is a great reason to store up 'season' items...such as 'pumpkin' oreas. We travel in RV and it's a fast way to grab a treat and get on the road. You can't do this for home-made cookies, however. Baked cookies don't have the preservatives store-bought cookies have. They can only be frozen a few months. Storing dry goods in jars...saves money. It saves seasonal items you really treasure to have once in a blue moon, and, in emergency they are a good way to calm kids and a good source of a pick-me-up in an emergency. Sugar, protein, fiber, is filling when food stores are low and they are great bargaining tools. They have carbs and we need that for energy; plus diabetics need carb numbers. The brain functions best on carbs and calories. A cookie could save a life!! So store a few packages now and use them for bargaining chips or lifts when your brain fogged. But mostly, don't let hubby answer the DOOR to sweet, innocent little girls wearing brown beanies and holding a flyer!! ROFL!!! Oh-- and some of these cookies were only a quarter a package from when our big lots went out of business! I still have six jars of these cookies sitting on my shelf and have not bought a cookie in years! NO NEED! I have plenty on a dime! (other than the GS cookies...;)

  • @0romoctolakelady
    @0romoctolakelady 9 років тому

    Are these gluten free cookies? I noticed you enjoyed one. I thought you had a gluten sensitivity. Perhaps I am mistaken. In my house these wouldn't last years...teens are like locusts and devour everything. When your kids were teens did you hide food storage? I would have to or it would be gone in no time. Thanks for sharing.

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  9 років тому +1

      Hehe! You caught me cheating! LOL>> Actually, I'm more sensitive to whole wheat products, barley, and rye ... I can have sunbeam bread. Some have more sensitivity than others. Also, I have a soy sensitivity that is worse than glutens and I have a harder reaction to bananas and kiwi due to Latex-Fruit Syndrome. So, I have my sensitivities figured out, for the most part. So, one cookie is no big deal for me if it's not whole wheat (like wheat thins) Yes, my children found my stashes and would say to us, "Why buy it if we can't eat it!" LOL>

      These products are not sterilized as in a pressure canner or an autoclave would do, it's bout killing larva or sealing out air which causes items going stale too quickly. Gives you more time to use on sale items up faster.
