- In this video, I'll be showing you how to retrofit a P-35 onto an older Ludwig drum. The hole spacing is not the same as the older drums but Ludwig does provide some holes to tap it out yourself and in this video I show how to do that.
Thanks for Watching Destination Percussion!

How to use a Tap and Die:
• Using Taps and Dies
As a extra measure of precaution I would use a bottoming tap to avoid stripping threads!
ludwig dropped the ball not making that part usable for older and newer drums.nice modification.
I just made the same modification for my Supraphonic. I discovered using a number 29 drill bit first and then tapping the hole with the 8/32 tap worked for me. I did have to drill the shell out a little to make the holes line up.
My next move is to retap a few p-85 throw offs and add screws that will work with drum keys. The only reason I am doing this is because they came to me with new (wrong sized) screws in them all stripped out. I prefer the P-88AC but someone may want the older, modified P-85s.

Thank you for watching!
I did the identical hack on a vintage Ludwig project last year. It’s ridiculous Ludwig didn’t think to thread those gasket retention holes as it would work perfectly.
I know right! I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Thanks for watching, Mike!
Thanks for posting this. I just bought the P88 set to replace the throw and butt plate on my vintage Acrolite. Now I just need a to find a tapping set.😁
Made my morning reading that! The Tapping set will come in handy for many things. like if you strip a wing nut on a stand. Thank you for watching!
I’d just keep the original but plate on my accent snare drum
What length screws for the throw off, and which ones for the butt plate...PLEASE AND THANKS !
What kind of drum do you have? Both will vary depending on the shell thickness.
it makes no sense why both sets of holes are not tapped haha
I know right! Just a dropped ball on their part.
