you arnt in fact mat Smith anf Ghram norton both trued it on Ghrams show when matt first guested and both said it was kinda nice in the us tv cook Alton brown made a video with a version that had a Savory Custard made with Dill video is on youtube
When they filmed the TV episode with Matt Smith it was actually desiccated coconut rather than breadcrumbs because the appearance was similar but tasted better. The coconut crumb went around a simple Victoria sponge finger.
ive seen people do mahi mahi coated with a macadamia nut and coconut crumb, and top it with a very custard like sauce, some types of fish can actually do well, especially if you make a more "neutral" tasting custard.
I think when they say Frozen Fish Finger, it just means the type of Fish Finger it was, since the scene in question, which is from Matt Smith's first episode, he pulls the box of Fish Fingers out the freezer, which is followed by us seeing him eating them with the custard, presumably cooking them first.
Yeah, the scene shows Amelia cook a bunch of stuff for him, to varying reactions. Can't remember if they showed the fish fingers sizzling in the pan or skipped it at that point, because even with quick cuts, her turning on the hob and something bubbling in a pot does get old after the fourth or fifth time.
I tried this in primary school as I loved doctor who then. My dad worked on the Doctor who sound and while chatting with Matt smith he brought up that I tried the fish fingers and custard while in school! He wrote me a little letter that said “wow you ate fingers and custard! Your so cool!” With his signature! Honestly tasted pretty good !!!😂
As a Doctor Who fan who doesn't eat fish I've made my own fish fingers and custard as a dessert. Homemade shortbread fingers coated in Gingernut biscuit crumbs (stuck on with an egg wash) look remarkably like fish fingers. Served with normal custard though it has to be birds custard to get the authentic color!
For the breadcrumbs, they need to be dried in the oven, or use day-old stale real bread (so pre-dried!) to get them to whizz up nicely in a chopper into finer crumbs, cos when fresh, the bread just loves to clump up cos it's moist, everyone's favourite word... :P

I think the cod fish fingers and the cheap ones are made the same way but the cheap ones just use less popular white fish like pollock, which is probably a good thing since cod is not as plentiful. When they process fish for fish fingers, the skinned fillets are frozen into big rectangular blocks which are then sawn up into sticks while still frozen. So it's not paste, it's compressed layers of fillets. That's how they get them so perfect (plus I guess there's no waste) compared to the homemade goujon type.

If I try use anything ut the app it just won't show anything and says browser has a issue showing this video. Everything else on UA-cam works so must be a issue with just this video.
In Poland we also got Paluszki Rybne (Which just means Fish Fingers), they are the same as British ones, although here they are made mostly from pollock (I guess that's how this fish is called) instead of cod.
The cheaper ones in the UK are usually made from pollock in the UK too. I've also seen them made haddock or even salmon, but if you're making your own then I guess that most fish would work ok.
This makes me even more excited to try Fish Fingers and Custard in my next video soon! The Doctor Who Cookbook definitely has some cool recipe ideas I'd love to try in a video one day! 💙
Hey Barry.. Just giving you a heads up. Don't know how many people are experiencing this with the video but I've gone through three browsers and none of them will play the video, saying the browser is unsupported (Chrome, Edge and Opera). Opened the video on my phone through the app and all I get is the sound to play but no video.. Up until yesterday I had been seeing the video play(I'd kept pausing it because.. I just have to be in a certain mindset for Fish and Custard..) but I tried yesterday and that's been it started telling me the browser was unsupported. I don't think it's anything you did, but UA-cam loves pulling shenanigans..
We've got that book but haven't made any of the recipes yet. I'll have to try that fish finger and custard one. We've already eaten the proper fish custard. If you want another book to try, how about Nanny Ogg's Cookbook? I made the Sheep's Eyes and the Quattro Rodenti. It helps if you know Discworld, but it's fun even if you don't.
Has anyone else noticed that the video won't play? I've been getting an error message since last night. My partner and I tried to watch it on the TV as we usually do, and got the error message. Then I tried on my cell, same message, and just now tried on the laptop and still an error message :(
What it means by fresh bread crumbs is you take bread you toast it chillest write out a bit or you can use old bread that has dried out and then you grind them up in that machine.
If you love Back to the future you’ll love Dr who. Start with the Eccleston reboot . I made it to part way through Matt Smith then I tapered off but between those years it was TV gold
Is anyone else having issues playing this video? The app on my phone is giving me the thumbnail as if it's a short, but just audio. The app on my TV just doesn't play anything. And UA-cam in Chrome on my computer just says "Your browser can't play this video." I assume it has to be something wrong with UA-cam but I haven't seen anyone else say they couldn't watch it. Edit: OK I should have sorted comments by newest first because now I'm seeing that seemingly everyone is having an issue. Glad it's not just me.
Down here fish fingers are usually ocean salmon. But cod sounds great, have to try it. And your fish fingers look amazing, super fluffy and natural. Completely different from the industrial blocks.
To make the fresh breadcrumbs a more of a traditional colour you can try toasting the bread before whizzing them up. The scene from Dr.Who was the first episode of the 11th doctor and they were the frozen variety.
I've seen people make their own breadcrumbs from actual sliced bread, and they either leave it out to intentionally go stale, or lightly toast it to just dry it out a bit before they smash it up in the food processor.
There’s a Harry Potter cookbook that’s similar to that cookbook, like more fun and food replica of things like the quidditch pitch or a howler. Similar idea but still fun to flip through, oh and there is savoury and sweet recipes as well ☺️.

When my son was younger, we watched the episode with the fish fingers and custard. My son then insisted he had to try it. So we went to Walmart and got fish fingers, headed to the British section and got custard. We went home and got it ready. He dove into it and the look of disgust on his face. Lol. I didn't have the heart to say I told you so.
As a avid Doctor Who fan, I couldn't resist making fish fingers and custard, only my homemade "custard" became the base of a tartar sauce. A good trick for frying is to freeze what you're going to fry a little before cooking.
The real fish fingers (made to look like bog standard frozen fish fingers) and custard seen on screen were 'fish fingers' made from coconut cake - and real custard. In that episode, (The Eleventh Hour) The Doctor tries lots of food, and hates all of it - it's a funny scene - seek it out on youtube, and at one point, he says to the little girl, into whose garden the TARDIS has crashed: "You're Scottish, fry something!" It's a little unfair, but it did make me laugh. Doctor Who. A British institution, and 60 years old next year. I've been slightly obsessed with it since 1968, when I was five. Still a fan. As I write this, I can see a shelf upon which are 50+ model Daleks, all different, several versions of the TARDIS, and all the Doctor's incarnations so far - there's only one Doctor, but he/she has many incarnations. I'm rather fond of fish fingers made of Hake, and also those made from Pollack. Cod has been seriously overfished in the past, and it's nice to let the newer guys have a go, and let the Cod have a rest, and build up numbers.
Hey Barry for some reason this video wont play (Black screen with "Your browser cant play this video" - ive checked other videos from you and they play fine (3 more viral ticktoks from 12 days ago). Not sure if its a setting thing - im on firefox and its up to date. just thought i would let you know just in case theres problem and you see lower viewer numbers for some reason.
Pour one out for Coolio. Well do I remember you doing fish fingers and custard back in the early days of Barshens, with Stuart Ashen and Anna Johnson. "You can take the girl out of the waitress, but you can't take the waitress out of the girl." Orson Welles would approve of this recipe. "Yes... oh YES! They're even better when you dip them in CUSTARD!" As for that cheese sauce, it's so frighteningly yellow that it looks more like mustard than custard.
UK export something around 90% of the fish from our seas, if we ate more fish it could well be much cheaper. Natural food source next door and we import instead from countries thousands of miles away.
I love the inexhaustible optimism of Barry's videos. Keeping my (fish) fingers crossed that a vid goes viral soon and he breaks that one-million-subs barrier.
Having an issue watching this video, all I'm getting is the following error "Your browser can't play this video.". I have tried all browsers and all of them (Chrome, Firefox and Opera are the latest versions.), and this issue is not limited to just the browsers, it also does not play on mobile and Android TV boxes / Bluray Player with UA-cam installed. I can watch other content on UA-cam perfectly, but not this video.
That looks awesome! And I think that because we both like fish fingers in our house I might need to get a copy of the book (and try some of the other recipes too, of course). It'll be me only eating the cheese sauce though because my OH is such a picky eater - he won't eat custard either, which I found really strange at first!

In doctors who it was a birds eye fish finger and cold custard you get in those little pots the doctor ate after getting out of the tardis
Yay I love Doctor who thank you 😊
I want to watch this but I get a black screen, and the message WE’RE PROCESSING THIS VIDEO. CHECK BACK LATER. It’s been like this for 2 days.
As a avid Doctor Who fan, I couldn't resist making fish fingers and custard, only my homemade "custard" became the base of a tartar sauce. A good trick for frying is to freeze what you're going to fry a little before cooking.
Hi Barry I am having trouble viewing this video got audio but no video. 😀🏴❤️
Hey,
Sorry tried to watch this video and says “we’re processing this video..” is this the same for others. Or just me? Thanks 😊
I usually wait for the bread slices to go stale (leave 'em out for a couple of hours) before whizzing into breadcrumbs.
Is anyone else unable to play the video? I keep getting error messages
The real fish fingers (made to look like bog standard frozen fish fingers) and custard seen on screen were 'fish fingers' made from coconut cake - and real custard. In that episode, (The Eleventh Hour) The Doctor tries lots of food, and hates all of it - it's a funny scene - seek it out on youtube, and at one point, he says to the little girl, into whose garden the TARDIS has crashed:
"You're Scottish, fry something!"
It's a little unfair, but it did make me laugh.
The video is working now just to let you all know
Don't worry, we all hid behind the sofa to watch Dr Who, as kids.
Fun fact about Barry: he literally had the opportunity to be an extra in a Dr. Who episode but was working
I always figured that fish fingers were just fish sticks but nice to get confirmation.
I think you should get the Back To The Future Cookbook next! 😁
Fish Fingers & Custard my fave snack sooo yummy.
"You can take the girl out of the waitress, but you can't take the waitress out of the girl."
Orson Welles would approve of this recipe. "Yes... oh YES! They're even better when you dip them in CUSTARD!"
As for that cheese sauce, it's so frighteningly yellow that it looks more like mustard than custard.
Not surprised that the fish and custard taste ok together. It's that salty/sweet combo. Like McDonald's fries and a milkshake! 😋 😋 😋
I actually tried the recipe as it is in the show frozen oven fish fingers and box custard and it's actually pretty dang good guys
barry you should do more of the more interesting ones in that book i had it and theres some really fun ones you should try
UK export something around 90% of the fish from our seas, if we ate more fish it could well be much cheaper. Natural food source next door and we import instead from countries thousands of miles away.
RachhLoveLife has an air fryer called Fryer Tuck. Her husband named it. He even had a shirt made! 🤣
RIP Coolio, I feel like a piece of my childhood is gone.
That looks awesome! And I think that because we both like fish fingers in our house I might need to get a copy of the book (and try some of the other recipes too, of course). It'll be me only eating the cheese sauce though because my OH is such a picky eater - he won't eat custard either, which I found really strange at first!
Actually tried fish fingers and custard, it surprisingly works XD. I don’t understand why but it does.
