This was a tough call because Liam Neeson was also great in SCHINDLER'S LIST and SCHINDLER was clearly the better film. But Tom Hanks's performance in PHILADELPHIA was the first time a major star showed the face of AIDS in all its horror and still managed to capture the hearts of the audience. God bless you Mr Hanks.
As the granddaughter of a man who's sisters slip him to that train when he was 13 and who's sister gave her NAME to another girl who was sick so she could be saved and ended up staying imprisoned in the ghetto for 8 more months, I can tell you that this movie, as good as it may be, disrespects the real heroes of the story which are the survivors. My grandfather didn't want to go on that train. He didn't want to leave his family behind and he was terrified because his sisters couldn't tell him that this train was there to bring him back to life and safety because if they did they would've risked exposing the entire plan so he thought that his sisters (which he haven't seen for 4 years before that brief reunion, by the way) were basically sending him away to die. He was sure that it was the same train he'd heard of, the train that'll take you to your final destination. Can you imagine how that must've felt for a child? They never deal with that in the movie, they chose to focus on the angel saving the poor Jewish people when in fact, and incredible as he actually was, don't get me wrong, the thousands of warriors he put on the list were the ones who saved their voice to talk to the god they weren't even sure was there anymore instead of being the focus and playing god themselves. So yeah, I actually think Philadelphia was the right choice.
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
Tom Hanks' charisma is almost presidential in scale. This acceptance speech is so unbelievably powerful and profound that it literally takes my breath away and wells my eyes with tears of pure awe at this incredible man's honest, unflinching, thought provoking and life-affirming portrayal of a person's reality of living with one of the most disastrous and ruthless diseases to have ever afflicted humanity. Tom's movie performance was a universal one, that transcends HIV and AIDS - it was also moral lesson in the importance of equality, empathy, acceptance and ultimately humanity at its most fundamental level. His acceptance speech is among the greatest set of words ever to have been spoken in the English language. I'm blown away... Chris (UK).

First off, Denzel would've been nominated for Supporting Actor. Second, IDGAF what you get 'mad' at. It's always a racial thing in America. Because America was BUILT on racial things. There's a division of culture and economics because of racial things. So while your premise is that it's not overt racism, you ignore the reality that if white people have created the structures, which means white people get to select who they have representing those structures, it stands to reason that white people are going to consciously or unconsciously choose their own people for a variety of seemingly harmless but nevertheless, damaging reasons for people who are not white. I'm over white people who refuse to see things out of a prism only than their own and want to act aggrieved at the mere trial of having to HEAR someone else's viewpoint. Fuck you two times.

This movie was shown to me by my parents when I was young, because they thought it would help me start to see multiple sides to an ongoing debate that seemingly had only one side to it. They succeeded. I thank Mr. Hanks for beyond so brave and taking this role, and teaching us all a message of "what it means to be human".
This is one of my favourite movies of all time, and Tom Hanks is my favourite actor, but there's always a little part of me that is sad for Liam Neeson. His performance as Oskar Schindler was magnificent.
Liam Neeson was just extraordinary in Schindler’s List. It’s a such an important movie. But so was Philadelphia. And I just watched it the other day and cried. Just the performance Hanks gives in his eyes and facial expressions alone. Subtle but profound. Bravo to both...but I think think the right man won that night.
All the actors nominated that year were ridiculously good. Neeson was incredible in Schindler's List, but for me, Hanks' performance was perfection. His acting in Philadelphia was emotional, understated and relevant to society, given the issues dealt with in the film.
I'm a gay 16 year old boy and I saw Philadelphia for the first time earlier this year. The film inspired me to come out publicly at school, and I've been so much happier since. Regardless of the now old age of this film, it changed my life drastically for the better. It holds a very dear place in my heart and I know that holds true for many others like me. It gives me faith in humanity and myself, knowing that a kind, wonderful, loved actor is there to support those like me who often find ourselves without support. I'm so happy that he included Denzel Washington; he should have been nominated, too. A special Oscar should have been given to Liam Neeson. His performance as Oskar Schindler will go in history as one of the greatest.
Well, when you're nominated with Daniel Day-Lewis, Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson, you're probably not expecting to win. Olivia Colman was the same way when she won for "The Favourite." "Me????"
this speech broke me when I first saw it as an adult gay man. Heartbreaking. such a conservative era still. Tom Hanks was always progressive but this was just beautiful.
I don't recall which movie it was that I went to see with my wife. I do remember that when we got there the theater was full and so we decided to watch the other movie available at that particular hour which was Philadelphia. Luckily there were 2 seats available, the last 2 seats and so we grabbed them. Aside from Tom and Denzel and Antonio's display of what a great actor is all about, the thing I remember the most is the amount of ppl all around us weeping throughout the movie all the way to the end and then outside too. Tom is so humble and kind in his Oscar acceptance speeches! He was so deserving of this Award. This was a very difficult role to pull off and he did so with such grace and humanity! God Bless you Tom! 😁🗽🇱🇷
You guys have to remember that at the time Philadelphia came out, the AIDS epidemic was at its peak. Before 1995, when effective treatments became available for those who were HIV positive, if you or anyone you knew contracted AIDS, it was still a death sentence. Tom Hanks' performance in that movie goes to show that at the end of the day, tolerance, no matter what, still exists.
I remember being deeply moved by this movie when it came out in the theater. And even now (when I see it on cable) the tears flow down my cheeks while watching it. So many scenes in that movie just gripped me; and what an ensemble of actors / actresses. 'Philadelphia' will always be my favorite movie. Too bad they just don't make great movies like this anymore.
I remember watching Tom Hanks winning his first Oscar, my mom went "happily nuts" because that's her all-time favorite actor since the TV show 'Bosom Buddies'. I'm also a huge Tom Hanks fan (but not as huge as my mom) and 'Philadelphia' is my all-time favorite film (before 'Forrest Gump' by an inch)! This is one of my all-time favorite Oscar acceptance speech!
It's strange when I watch Hanks here. Though he's genuinely grateful, notice how he keeps looking in Neeson's direction... I get the vice that he feels like he just robbed Liam and probably think he deserved it more than he did. That said, still a fine speech, and he did well in Philadelphia.
That speech needs to be remembered as much, if not more, today than when he gave it. We are all human beings deserving of respect regardless of our sexual preference, skin color, or religion. Thanks for your inspirational message.
First of all I have to say I like Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis and Anthony Hopkins and their fine performances in great movies this year. It was a strong year in the lead actor category. But Tom Hanks´performance in this very important movie was great. His character had so much integrity and humanity. He was Andrew Beckett and he played this character so well along with the great Denzel Washington. Very deserved win and by the way a wonderful acceptance speech.
After watching this film at the cinema I sat in a McDonalds and wept. I could tell that I wasn't the only one affected by it. We had all left the cinema in a shocked silenced. The fear of that disease was written all over our faces. Whilst sitting there all I could think about as I looked at the people around me (still with a look of dread on their faces as they were queuing for food) was that one day we will all be at the bedside of a loved one (or they at ours) while they lie there dying like Andrew Beckett. The thought of such a future broke my heart.
I still think Liam Neeson should of won, he's never played a better role I think than he did in Schindler's List. It was a one in a lifetime movie for him to star in. Not taking anything away from Tom Hanks, he's clearly talented enough to win another Oscar after this win.
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
I know one of those angel’s names. He was my uncle. A gay man who left us too early because of AIDS. This movie broke my heart, because I know he heard a lot of awful things people said to him. They said those things to me too. His memory was tied to pain for 25 years. Until a week ago when my wife and I welcomed a baby to our family. His name is Gordon - after my uncle.
Hanks where good in this movie, but Liam Neeson should have won for Oskar Schindler. I never saw such a moving scene like the ending of Schindler's List
Tom Hanks was good in Philadelphia but it was Denzel Washigton's performance that blew me out of my seat. He (Washington) had the much harder role to play.
One of the greatest performances of all time. To play a man with AIDS has to be one of the most haunting experiences ever, and Tom played it like it was nothing. Truly truly deserved it. One of the perfect Oscar wins.
In my opinion, it goes... 1. Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day" 2. Hanks in "Philadelphia" 3. Neeson in "Schindler's List" 4. Day-Lewis in "In the Name of the Father" 5. Fishburne in "What's Love Got to Do with It"
Tom's one of my favorite actors, just a great speech by him there as well but - while I simply loved "Philadelphia" and think that Hanks was superb in it - I believe that Anthony Hopkins' performance in "The Remains of the Day" gets the slight edge that year and he should've won it... "The Remains of the Day" was not nearly as successful in the box office as "Philadelphia" or "Schindler's List" were though, not even as iconic, so that also contributes to it being neglected, with not nearly as many people having seen it or even hearing about it. I also believe that Hopkins had his all-time best performance that year, and one of the very best performances ever, at that... Yes, even better than the role he won an Oscar for, even better than his performance in "The Silence of the Lambs", with certainly more screen time than in that one while that's undeniable and also very important in my opinion. With that said, I also believe that Hanks deserved his Oscar for "Forrest Gump" and Hopkins his for "The Silence of the Lambs". I also have to say that Liam Neeson was terrific in "Schindler's List" as well, and you can't forget to mention Day-Lewis, nor even Fishburne, for that matter... Some tremendous competition that year.
I really think Liam Neeson deserved to win but Hanks has quite possibly the most poetic and heartbreaking speech in Oscar history. And the man is just the nicest, coolest, most down-to-earth human in the industry. Props to him.
It’s beautiful to see that love message from almost 30 years ago , nevertheless I can’t believe there are still people who hates another people for loving each other
I remember seeing Tom Hanks on Inside the Actor's Studio talking about Philadelphia. Most of the hospital extras had AIDS and had passed by the time the film came out. He reflected on talking to a man, dying, who spoke about how much he loved his job - making noodles. He teared up talking about it, it was nice to see how much on an impact the film still had on him.
Tom Hanks gave a fine performance in Philadelphia, but Liam Neeson's performance was superior. His acting range, character immersion, and development were all better than those of Tom Hanks. And I don't understand why Daniel Day-Lewis' acting is overlooked here; I realize he has been rewarded for his performances, but his acting was incredible in In the Name of the Father.
Tom Hanks character in Philadelphia evoked more empathy from me than any character I've seen in a film since. Plus, the issue the film tackled was very taboo in major production films. His performance was magnified by the director and his supporting cast but that film and the way it was shot put his performance in a spotlight brighter than Liam's. Think about the time this film was made, the taboo-ness and the disease it highlighted... I'm a straight male who was raised in a homophobic household but Tom's performance... He made me feel sympathy and empathy for a gay man in a time when homosexuality was NOT embraced in public. I give all the props in the world to his performance.
Hanks is incredible and no one diserved it more then tom hanks..just cuz your in the "Best" movie sure as hell doesn't mean your the best actor..tom hanks will ALWAYS be on of the best...PERIOD!!
Tom Hanks has yet another movie coming out...i wanna say nov 2015'...a friend of mine is in it w him..can't wait to see it....Tom Hanks....he is....just one of the most amazing actor's out there...he's got more movies to come....he started out on a Tv sitcom...and now.he is considered one of the greatest actors....to meet him would be so sureal...
jennylane simon I am a HUGE Tom Hanks fan as well and I was curious about the movie you said he has coming out in 2015. I did a google search and found out it's called "Bridge of Spies" with co-star Alan Alda whom I'm also a HUGE fan of. I cannot wait until it gets released. :-)
Forevertweetie W yea it looked pretty cool...my friend...actually my cuz..but i dont know if allowed to say that...i cant give you his name..but if you pull up the entire cast...he plays the bully kid..he is so awsome..tom hanks..i fell in love w him when Big came out...love em...
Forevertweetie W absolutely...it was an amazing movie..sad of course because poor john coffee was innocent....Tom Hanks was very very good in that...ive seen probally every movie Tom has done...some performances unbelievably amazing....some really great...but like Big..blast f4om the past...turner and hooch..he ws hysterical in...the part when he's trying to go to sleep and hooch just keeps barking...hanks goes and just yells at him..but like a human...I just love him....
I think Mel Gibson deserved an Oscar nomination that year. He was great in "The Man Without a Face". I even think Sylvester Stallone gave a very impressive acting in "Cliffhanger"
The way Sir. Anthony Hopkins was clapping for him, that's true life goals!
Truely, especially evident by 0:28, the way he smiles, its wonderful.

Marcus Klacke Real men don't cry? What the frick kind of comment is that my friend? Get a fricken life, you are obviously biased SOB.
Youre obviously gay.
Marcus Klacke Don't confuse real men with heartless assholes.
ronnie rodriguez i can tell youre a girlie man
Tom Hanks is an amazing actor! The pinnacle of acting!
Too bad they just don't make great movies like this anymore.
this picture is so beautiful and amazing I just couldn't stop crying when I saw this movie congratulations Tom Hanks
OH MY GOODNESS! That was so eloquently put. Tom Hanks is amazing.
Watched his both acceptance speeches . He's truly the MASTER of speeches .
It's strange when I watch Hanks here. Though he's genuinely grateful, notice how he keeps looking in Neeson's direction... I get the vice that he feels like he just robbed Liam and probably think he deserved it more than he did.
That said, still a fine speech, and he did well in Philadelphia.
he also hugs him as he is walking up on stage. i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these performances.
Goosebumps every time i watch it
LOVED this movie, love Tom Hanks, and Denzel Washington. there will never be another movie like this!
Absolutely beautiful speech, Tom!

"The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels... they finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all."
What an all-round top guy Tom Hanks is! Gotta love him. One of the finest actors to have ever graced the silver screen.
Hanks where good in this movie, but Liam Neeson should have won for Oskar Schindler. I never saw such a moving scene like the ending of Schindler's List
What about the ending of Philadelphia and Tom Hanks perfomance in general. Or the singing the opera scene
Tom Hanks was good in Philadelphia but it was Denzel Washigton's performance that blew me out of my seat. He (Washington) had the much harder role to play.
I agree completly, but hanks was also great
+Runner legend did you know that densel wasn't even nominated!?
i so agree Denzel's performance in Philly was just fantastic!
yea agreed but at the time hanks was bout to burst
Just see the scene where hanks sings opera again :) thats the reason hanks was nominated to the oscars ;)
Wow. This is pure poetry. I'm having a hard time believing he came up with this on the spot. So beautiful.
Anthony Hopkins at 0:14 What a class man
I'd say Liam Neeson was more than a little disappointed not to win for Schindlers List..
He was fantastic...I was honestly pulling for him even though I loved Hanks' performance as well.
One of the greatest performances of all time. To play a man with AIDS has to be one of the most haunting experiences ever, and Tom played it like it was nothing. Truly truly deserved it. One of the perfect Oscar wins.
WHAT A YEAR for this category. Only legends
Hats off to you Tom Hanks. You deserved it :)
In my opinion, it goes...
1. Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day"
2. Hanks in "Philadelphia"
3. Neeson in "Schindler's List"
4. Day-Lewis in "In the Name of the Father"
Tom Hanks has great acting in Philadelphia.
Emma gave Tom his first Oscar, and now they've just costarred in Saving Mr. Banks. That's six degrees and then some!
Why does this speech make me cry I never cry at things like this but his performance was so powerful and this speech is just wow
One of my favourite actors...
It’s beautiful to see that love message from almost 30 years ago , nevertheless I can’t believe there are still people who hates another people for loving each other
This speech was so good, it inspired a comedy in 1997 called "In & Out."
And he's gay....
Facts lol
I remember seeing Tom Hanks on Inside the Actor's Studio talking about Philadelphia. Most of the hospital extras had AIDS and had passed by the time the film came out. He reflected on talking to a man, dying, who spoke about how much he loved his job - making noodles. He teared up talking about it, it was nice to see how much on an impact the film still had on him.
why am I binge watching this acceptance speeches?
He won best actor in a leading role two years in a row that’s legendary absolutely great actor hes my hero
Tom Hanks is profound and intelligent. He does not need a degree from elite schools but it is something that lies deep within
That all people are created equal
No they are not : (
Who told you that ? Oh wait, never mind i know : (
Tom Hanks deserved to win this. I'm not just sure, I'm HIV positive.
***** I'm HIV positive that I'm being serious.
Sparks. Its not over baby because your HIV positive remember that.
Erica Daniel I'm HIV positive that a lot of people missed my joke.
***** I'm HIV positive that you didn't get the joke either.
maybe jokes r for another life?
Just like he said in the movie: "I appreciate your faith in my abilities".
Tom is pure heart, love and kindness. His immense talent is just a bonus
Tom Hanks is a fine man and a great actor.
Tony Hopkins giving him that pat on the cheek, priceless!
thats ‘sir anthony’ to the rest of us.
but agreed, wtf, thats reaching the top of the craft ranks for sure!
Tom Hanks POWERFUL EPIC speech truly pierced my Heart and touched my Soul!
Tom Hanks' win was needed at the time. Lewis' performance did not need an award. It spoke for itself.
Is it weird that I say this: Lol, P.L. Travers giving Walt Disney his Oscar.
LOL. How about that!
Yeah ❤️❤️❤️
The best actor of all times...
awesome speech

I think Mel Gibson deserved an Oscar nomination that year. He was great in "The Man Without a Face". I even think Sylvester Stallone gave a very impressive acting in "Cliffhanger"
Cliffhanger was a good one! I agree
you really think a piece of shit movie like cliffhanger's lead cast would won an oscar? what a moron, nice noodley arms kid
alex blend can i only give the first half of your comment a like?
spectacular speech
2:17 This part inspired the movie In & Out
Dear Academy,
Please give an Oscar to Tom Hanks every year in one category or another so that we can listen to his awesome emotional speeches.
Thanks.
Amazing speech!!
My favourite actor of all time
Oh man this makes me cry every time i watch this....
I'm kinda suspect to talk, since it's my favorite movie, but Neeson's Schindler really touched my heart.
