I saw this film on a whim. No idea what I was in for. I will never forget walking out of the theatre with everyone else who had just seen it. We all looked completely distraught. People were still crying. The people in the long line waiting to go in looked like they were having a collective second thought about seeing it when they saw the looks on our faces. One truly powerful movie.

Actually, Denzel's character's actions in accepting the seemingly bad personal injury case while turning down the seemingly good employment case isn't uncommon, even removing the HIV factor. I know of at least some personal injury plaintiff attorneys who will take the case where liability is a stretch but they can refer out to doctors who will overtreat and diagnose with inflated future med costs. Even with bad liability, the price of poker has gone up that defendants or insurers will want to settle. Lots of PI attorneys, however, may not know all the legal nuances or procedural issues in a Title VII or ADA claim and will punt it. Plus, state Court may be more plaintiff-friendly than federal court and defense can remove Title VII and ADA claim to federal court but not state law negligence.
But I get it, the scene showed how backwards many people were in the early 90s about HIV. Plus, these days, so easy to back up court pleadings that it would be more difficult for Andy's law firm to "sabotage" him by hiding the complaint.

One of my favorite movies of all times. I was in high school when this movie was filmed. I was on a “cut” day and was hanging out in Philadelphia’s City Hall. I didn’t know they were filming. I was sitting alone in a hallway waiting for an interview for a summer internship opportunity and both Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington came walking down the hallway. They stopped and took time to talk to me. They saw the patch on my blazer “Girard College” and started asking questions. They were impressed and the very next day they showed up on campus for a tour.

In Australia a little girl became HIV positive after a blood transfusion. The paranoia and hysteria lead to the little girl being banned from going to school and interacting with other kids. Her family moved over to New Zealand, where us Kiwis welcomed her and her family and took them in as our own. Sadly at the age of 11, she passed away due to AIDS. I bet a lot of younger people would find this a little corny and exaggerated today, but the movie depicts something that was very real at the time. Just like today, fear and misinformation of a health concern divided and demonized human beings. And anti-gay ridicule and hatred was quite mainstream.

    • @cultclassic999
      @cultclassic999 2 роки тому +2

@@mightisright AIDS was seen as divine retribution for being gay. For years the Reagan administration didn't even mention the epidemic because they feared reaction from the religious right. AIDS was portrayed as a disease only gays get. It was hard to get funding for AIDS research because of the social stigma. I personally know a researcher who told me told me the struggle he had to go through, or even mentioning that he is working on a cure for the disease. And he worked at one of the leading research hospitals in the world.
Then in the early 80s Bernie Sanders, then a Mayor of a town in Vermont, made a proclamation about Gay Pride day. That was a huge deal. He was ridiculed and hated for it. I don't agree with much of his economic policies, but I acknowledge that proclamation took guts.
Then Princess Diana went to a hospital with dying AIDS patients, and shook hands with them, (*GASP*) without wearing gloves. The pictures were published all over the world's newspapers, the equivalent of today's "going viral".
It is hard to imagine these were monumental events. Now we know AIDS is just another disease, caused by a damn virus.

I guess what a lot of younger people wouldn't understand is back then, and pretty much up to the late 90's, people thought that by hugging, touching, or having other physical interactions with AIDS patients would somehow give them the disease. Medical science has come a long way not to keep HIV in check and now actually have medication that patients can take to prevent spreading the HIV virus to their partners. From pretty much 1980-mid to late 90's (approximating here) when you got and AIDS diagnosis people pretty much assumed you were dead, much like cancer was until the last 20 years. The acting by both these great screen legends is spot on here, and I remember going to the theater to watch this as a kid (10 years old) and have a much different attitude about the virus, and gay community, after leaving the theater with my mom (who is a huge fan of both of these actors).

Like seriously, wtf are you talking about? *”How does being gay make a community bro?”* Come on dude, you never heard the term “gay community”? It’s the year 2022. People are always talking about the gay and LGBTQ+ community. That’s strike 1.
And cancer is not a death sentence. Compare the death rates now to what it was in the late 80’s-early 90’s. Nobody would call it a “Death sentence” anymore. Plus, surgery is the least effective and most dangerous way to get rid of cancer. That’s strike 2.

True story: when I was growing up in NYC in the Bronx my best friend and I both played high school football and we were both Denzel and Tom Hanks fans. We had the day off from practice for some reason I can't recall and decided to go catch a movie in Co-op City. We had ZERO idea what this movie was about, we just knew it was getting praised and Denzel and Hanks were in it. Boom, that's all we needed to know. We get there early enough that the lights hadn't been dimmed yet and the first thing we noticed (being the chicken hawks we were at the time) was that there were no girls in the audience. And a whole bunch of guys sitting in pairs, but being 17 we thought little of it. Then a couple of guys sit behind us and a bit to the right and one of them taps me on the shoulder and tells me how it's awesome that two guys our age aren't afraid to be ourselves in public. He was pretty effeminate and me being pretty smart I immediately asked him what the movie was about - and he told us. We caught on and started laughing and told him the truth, we aren't gay and we had no idea what the movie was about. He just stared at us and was like "NO!?! Are you serious sweetheart?" And all four of us started dying laughing, even people who'd overheard us talking were giggling about it. They were cool as hell and man I even nearly cried during the "opera scene", I'd never seen acting so powerful before and it just moved the hell out of me. What a great, GREAT movie. It's just a shame that Denzel didn't win a best supporting actor Oscar because he really deserved it. and Tom Hanks began his great run of Oscar winning/nominated performances. Great memory that me and my buddy still talk about whenever one of us mentions this movie. We'll look at each other and say "Remember Philadelphia?" And we'll start cracking up.

Mr. Washington is one of the greatest actors.

Denzel was amazing. Tom Hanks was Tom Hanks. He plays the same character in every film that he has ever been in. He is nothing if not consistent.

1:16 That shot alone proves that Jonathan Demme was a genius.

The performances are amazing, but give credit to Johnathan Demme for his directorial choices in this movie. I love the closeups on the face on Hanks and Washington - allows their performances to cut through the screen that. Brilliant work all round.

This is one of the best movies ever, and this is Denzel and Tom in their prime. I haven’t seen Philadelphia in 10+ years, but I may have to watch it again. It’s weird because the movie is so good, but it also bums me out.

Hanks is phenomenal in this. He signed a couple of performances on the same level, but on the whole he's rarely showcased his full potential.

This was an amazing movie. I had no desire to watch it when it first came out but when it was on HBO I started watching it. Was going to watch another movie that was coming on and once I was 10 minutes in I was hooked.
